Dennis Quaid has signed on for a leading role in the upcoming Paramount+ series “Happy Face,” Variety has learned.
Quaid will appear alongside previously announced star Annaleigh Ashford. The series is inspired by the podcast of the same name from iHeartMedia and Melissa Moore, the book “Shattered Silence” written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook, and Moore’s true-life story.
In real life, Moore discovered at 15 that her father was the serial killer known as “Happy Face,” due to the smiley faces he drew on evidence where he bragged about his crimes. As an adult, she has changed her name and guarded her secret while her father has been serving life in prison.
The official description for the series states that it jumps off from Moore’s real life story. “Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father,” the description reads. “After decades of no contact,...

In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.
Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

Exclusive: Siobhan Murphy (Murdoch Mysteries) is set to recur in the Amazon Original series Cross. She will star opposite Aldis Hodge, who brings to life the titular Alex Cross.
Murphy will portray Tania Hightower, a driven, unstoppable journalist who works as a news reporter for the Post. Hightower’s beat includes all of Washington D.C., but her passion, loyalty and interest lies less in the political class and more in the often overlooked population of our nation’s capital.
From Paramount Television Studios and Skydance Television, Cross is described as a complex and twisted thriller created by producer and writer Ben Watkins and based on the best-selling Alex Cross book series by James Patterson.
Alex is a detective and forensic psychologist, uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, in order to identify — and ultimately capture — the murderers. He is brilliant, flawed, and full of contradictions.

Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.
Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.
Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.

“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”
Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.

The original iCarly series, produced by Nickelodeon, ran from 2007-2012. Starring Cosgrove, Trainor, Kress and Jennette McCurdy, it followed a group of best friends creating a webcast while grappling with everyday problems and adventures.

Netflix has produced many hit TV shows over the past seven years, ever since they started pumping out their own original programming. However, the streaming service has developed a reputation for not letting its series go on for too long. Fans know to be wary of getting attached to their favorite new Netflix shows as they could be unceremoniously cancelled after one or two seasons.
Earlier today, for instance, Hilary Swank vehicle Away was given the chop by the company after just a single outing. This makes it the 56th original series that Netflix has cancelled. That number only includes shows that were original to the platform and produced in-house, so it doesn’t count pick-ups like Lucifer, for example. Those series luckily enough to end on the creators’ own terms, such as House of Cards, are likewise not included. Shows that were axed by Netflix before being picked up elsewhere,...

Exclusive: Former Angie Tribeca star Hayes MacArthur is set as a lead opposite Lucy Liu in ABC’s Untitled Workplace Comedy (fka Kids Matter Now) pilot from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Studios and 20th TV.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and to be directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless) the Untitled Workplace Comedy (fka Kids Matter Now) centers on a diva boss (Liu) with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
MacArthur will play Dean. Handsome and self-assured but not as charming as he thinks, Dean runs the manufacturing division at Devin’s (Liu) multi-million dollar furniture company. Though he comes across as confident and cocky, he’s actually quite insecure because he has made work his whole focus. He is clearly threatened when Annie becomes Devin’s protege.

Fans of the late NBC comedy Undateable have at least one thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: Netflix on Thursday dropped all eight episodes of the new Christmas-themed comedy Merry Happy Whatever, which reunites former castmates Bridgit Mendler and Brent Morin.
Once again, the actors are romantically paired. Mendler plays Emmy Quinn, an L.A.-based financial analyst who brings her boyfriend, struggling musician Matt (Morin), home to meet her tight-knit, Philadelphia-based brood. That includes her hard-to-impress dad, Bucks County sheriff Don (The Parent Trap‘s Dennis Quaid), who takes an immediate disliking to his youngest daughter’s significant other.

Netflix is stealing Thanksgiving’s thunder this week by filling you with the Christmas spirit a little early with Thursday’s debut of the new Dennis Quaid-led holiday series, “Merry Happy Whatever.” Yes, you read that right, a Christmas TV series.
While the streaming service has moved into the holiday movie genre over the last few years with its “A Christmas Prince” franchise and films like “The Knight Before Christmas” “Holiday in the Wild,” they’ve never done a scripted holiday-themed show before. (Competition series like “Nailed It! Holiday” and “The Great British Baking Show: Holidays” don’t count here.)
So why did creator Tucker Cawley decide to write a Christmas series and not add to the growing list of Christmas films Netflix has to offer?

Who would have guessed that the battle to reign supreme with holiday programming would come in the way of dueling limited holiday-themed series?
Ok. It's not exactly a battle royale, but Netflix is releasing Merry Happy Whatever starring Dennis Quaid and Ashley Tisdale while Fox is challenging the binge-watch with The Moodys starring Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins, and Jay Baruchel.
The premises for both are essentially the same. It's Christmas time for family get-togethers with all that entails.
Both families have traditions to uphold and family members that need to arrive from out of town. It's adult children all around, and some are married, some are single, some are in love, and some are in the process of separating.
On Merry Happy Whatever, the Quaid's widower, Don Quinn heads the family, and he has four children, three girls and a boy.

Dennis Quaid remains unfazed by comments surrounding the 39-year age difference between him and his fiancée Laura Savoie.
The 65-year-old actor — who proposed to Savoie, 26, last month — was recently profiled by The Guardian where he opened about receiving criticism for dating a younger woman.
“That was really a laugh,” he told the outlet about gaining so much attention over their relationship, admitting, “I thought it was wonderful, actually.”
He continued to reveal that despite some of the harmful comments Quaid has heard about the couple, the two don’t take it personally.
“No, it really doesn’t bother us,” he said.

“One Day at a Time” co-creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett has signed a mega overall deal with Amazon Studios.
Under the pact, Calderón Kellett will create and develop TV series and films for the studio through her GloNation banner. GloNation projects produced under the pact will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
An individual with knowledge tells TheWrap Calderón Kellett’s deal with Amazon is in the eight-figure range and will begin in June 2020, when her current overall with Sony Pictures Television comes to an end. She is also remaining in her “full role and capacity” as co-showrunner and executive producer on Season 4 of Pop TV’s “One Day at a Time,” which is currently in production.

In a competitive situation, Amazon Studios has signed a big overall deal with One Day at a Time co-creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett.
I hear the pact is for three years and represents a milestone as the first ever for female Latinx writer/creator to reach eight figures. Under the deal, Calderón Kellett will create and develop TV series and films through her production company, GloNation, to run exclusively on Amazon Prime.
The Amazon Studios agreement starts in June 2020, after the end of Calderon Kellett’s current overall deal with Sony Pictures TV. Under that pact, she co-created, executive produces and co-showruns alongside Mike Royce One Day At a Time, a reimagining of Norman Lear’s 1970s classic. The praised comedy series, which ran on Netflix for three seasons, is now headed into Season 4 on Pop. If the family sitcom goes beyond that, Calderón Kellett will continue...

Dennis Quaid has starred in a number of memorable films, including The Parent Trap, The Rookie and Frequency, to name a few. But now he’s stepping into the world of television sitcoms, starring in Netflix's new series Merry Happy Whatever from Everybody Loves Raymond producer Tucker Cawley.
"I'd never done a sitcom before. This is my very first one," the actor told The Hollywood Reporter on what drew him to the role.
"I was the weakest member of the cast, because it’s a different animal and you got to get up to speed on these things,"...

He and Savoie got engaged in Honolulu, Hawaii last month.

Asked if they have started preparing for their big day, Quaid said that "happens like the next minute" after popping the question.
"I think she's looking at wedding dresses today. She's gotta get started," etonline.com quoted him as saying.
Addressing the couple's planned time frame for their wedding, Quaid said: "You've got a year, right? And if you go past a year without getting married, then you're suspect. That's basic etiquette."
They still have just over 11 months to get everything together, which means they still have time to fit in a vacation during the upcoming holiday season.

That sound you hear is Shrill… announcing when Season 2 will premiere. The Hulu comedy, starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant, will return with eight episodes on Friday, Jan. 24.
The new season begins with Bryant’s Annie “feeling pretty good” after facing her demons, including her mom, her boss and her troll, per the official synopsis. “She also has her boyfriend Ryan by her side. But the high doesn’t last long. … This season Annie is no longer the doormat she once was, but it’s not as easy as she thought to get what she always imagined she wanted.”

Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming Christmas-themed series, “Merry Happy Whatever,” on Monday, starring Dennis Quaid as Don Quinn, the father of a family that likes things done their own way during the holiday. Well, his way.
And his way doesn’t seem to include his daughter Emmy’s (Bridgit Mendler) new boyfriend Matt (Brent Morin) who wants to pop the question this Christmas.
Watch the video above, which also features Ashley Tisdale as Emmy’s sister Kayla, who is also not a big fan of Matt. Poor guy, looks like he’s got a rough road ahead this holiday season.
