A large part of Fallout’s charm is its retro futurism that makes use of the 1960–1970s aesthetic. If you’re a sucker for that aesthetic, look no further than 11.22.63: in this sci-fi drama, we travel into the past alongside James Franco to try and prevent Kennedy’s assassination… And grow terrifyingly close to his new life in the past.
You can watch 11.22.63 on Apple TV and Prime Video.
9. The Shield (2002–2008)
Another big hook of Fallout is the complete lawlessness of the Wasteland despite there being some people who call themself “the law.” If you’re into that whole “dirty and corrupt law enforcers” kind of thing, The Shield is for you: set in a fictional completely lawless district of LA, this show follows a unit of really, really bad cops.
You can watch The Shield on Hulu and Prime Video.

Trust no one! "True Detective: Night Country" is just around the corner. The fourth season in HBO's anthology series, created and executive-produced by Nic Pizzolatto, is coming to the small screen in January, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited. I could spend this entire piece focusing only on one: the star casting of Jodie Foster. Foster is an absolute legend, a versatile powder keg of performance power who has taken some wild career swings as of late -- directing episodes of "Black Mirror" and "Tales From the Loop," executive producing and appearing in a documentary about pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy-Blaché, and leading the ensemble of the incisively political 2021 film "The Mauritanian."
In "True Detective," as we know from the previous trailer, Foster will play Detective Liz Danvers, who, alongside partner Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), is investigating a particularly gruesome and bizarre crime. Per that trailer: "We've got...

Director Egor Abramenko gave a new twist to the creature feature in 2020’s Sputnik. He’s now set to take on biblical terror in God’s Country, marking his American directorial debut. Deadline reports that Bodies Bodies Bodies star Maria Bakalova will lead the Matt Reeves-produced genre pic.
God’s Country will follow “a young woman who travels to Kentucky to meet her fiancé, subsequently uncovering something sinister beyond comprehension, as her American dream curdles into a nightmare of biblical proportions.”
Will Soodik (“Westworld”) wrote the script.
Bakalova takes over for Melissa Barrera, who reportedly exited the role due scheduling conflicts. God’s Country is set to go into production in Romania under a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement in March. Barrera was announced to lead the project in February earlier this year, where her character was described as a Salvadoran woman.

Philip Glass has been composing soundscapes of ambient intrigue for documentary filmmaker Errol Morris for decades, from the groundbreaking true-crime doc “The Thin Blue Line” to the Robert McNamara portrait “The Fog of War.” Now, the three-time Oscar-nominated modernist composer and co-writer Paul Leonard-Morgan have crafted the original score for Morris’ John le Carré documentary “The Pigeon Tunnel,” the Apple TV+ documentary that opens Friday, October 20. Also premiering that day will be the film’s original soundtrack from Platoon, and IndieWire shares an exclusive track off the album below.
“It is our pleasure to share ‘The Pigeon Tunnel’ soundtrack,” said Philip Glass and Paul Leonard-Morgan, adding that “the orchestral journey this score took us on, combing the cimbalom of ’60s espionage soundtracks with symphonic orchestral work, led to 80 minutes of score, almost the entirety of the film.”

Gareth Edwards entered the film scene with "Monsters," a fantastic sci-fi movie that used its limited budget to tell a thrilling, suspenseful story. After that, however, Edwards went the route of many an indie director in the 2010s and was tapped to direct two huge blockbuster franchises, "Godzilla" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." While both had their merits ("Rogue One" even has some of the best moments in all of "Star Wars"), there is definitely something refreshing and exciting about Edwards finally overcoming his blockbuster fatigue and going back to his roots with "The Creator," a visually stunning piece of science fiction with big ideas and big performances.
In some ways, this is Gareth Edwards doing his version of "Star Wars: A New Hope" — a story of rebellion complete with a magical child, an evil battle station with a weapon that can completely obliterate planets, and a band...

Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s gritty “The Batman” film from Matt Reeves. Now they’re bringing the character to the new Max streaming service for an eight-episode series in 2024. An in-production preview of the series was unveiled on April 12 exclusively during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Watch it above.
In “The Batman,” Farrell played the Penguin as a lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) who ran Falcone’s Iceberg Lounge. Spoiler alert: Falcone doesn’t make it to the end of the film, perhaps opening the door for other criminals to take control of Gotham City’s underworld. The film earned a trio of Oscar nominations: Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the last of which was largely in recognition of the extensive prosthetics worn by Farrell.

Lily Collins, Charlie McDowell and Alex Orlovsky have partnered to launch Case Study Films, a production company that will look to tell compelling and outside-of-the-box stories through a commercial eye in both film and television.
Case Study will develop material internally and with outside filmmakers and talent, discovering, supporting and giving voice to the next generation of storytellers from all walks of life, as it generates projects for its principals.
The production banner has film financing capabilities through a strategic partnership with High Frequency Entertainment, which will afford it flexibility in deciding whether to produce and finance a project entirely in-house, or to find appropriate streamer or studio partners for it, depending on its scale.
Among the projects in development at Case Study is the Hulu limited series Razzlekhan: The Infamous Crocodile of Wall Street, co-produced by Scoop Wasserstein from New York magazine, which has Collins set to star, with McDowell directing.

Stephen King’s been known to write a doorstop or two, but within the prolific author’s oeuvre are tales that amount to a fraction of “It.” What these novellas lack in page-count, though, they make up for in thrills. Some of the most successful cinematic translations of his work come from this short-fiction subset.
“The Shawshank Redemption”—a two-and-a-half-hour prison drama adapted from the 181-page novella, “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”—is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made. Released by Netflix earlier this month and just in time for Halloween, “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone” is the newest product of King’s fruitful relationship with the film industry.

After directing Finding Nemo and Wall-e, Andrew Stanton turned his attention to the realm of live-action with John Carter. The film became one of the biggest box-office bombs in history, leading Disney to scrap the planned sequels. In the decade since its release, Andrew Stanton has largely stayed away from live-action movies, but THR reports that he’s set to return with In the Blink of an Eye for Searchlight Pictures.

There’s something darkly funny about growing up.
“Funny Pages,” which debuted at 2022 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, marks the feature directorial debut from Owen Kline (“The Squid and the Whale”), who also penned the script. Starring “Eighth Grade” and “Tales from the Loop” alum Daniel Zolghadri, “Funny Pages” tells the story of an aspiring teen cartoonist who shrugs off mundane suburban comforts and sets out to make it on his own in Trenton, New Jersey.
Maria Dizzia and Josh Pais star as the parents, who are trying to get their son to come home, while Stephen Adly Guirgis plays a high school art teacher. Matthew Maher portrays an older cartoonist who becomes a mentor to the lead.
“Funny Pages” is produced by Josh and Benny Safdie, and longtime Safdie Bros. cinematographer Sean Price Williams serves as director of photography for the film along with Hunter Zimny, using 16mm. “Funny Pages” premieres...

Eighteen years old. At the age a lot of young people would currently be looking ahead to a summer of watching Netflix, Millie Bobby Brown is Netflix. She’s not only the superpowered lead in Stranger Things – which still has its fifth and final season to film – but also set to be the star of multiple upcoming movies on the streaming service. A Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, Louis Vuitton house ambassador (sounds Hogwarts-y), the founder of a vegan beauty brand, owner of Pcma Productions and the star of her directorial debut – a short film in which she leaps about on aerial silks like she’s in fricking Cirque du Soleil – she’s the multi-hyphenate to make other multi-hyphenates weep over being such lazy, do-nothing bums. And that’s without even including the unsubstantiated Star Wars rumours.
Here’s what’s coming up next for the Stranger Things star.

Millie Bobby Brown is set to star in a new Netflix sci-fi movie, Deadline reported on June 28. Titled "The Electric State," the film will star Brown as a teenage orphan who travels around the American West with a drifter and her well-mannered robot in an effort to find her lost brother. In short, it seems set to be the perfect blend of sci-fi, Americana, and heart.
The film is based on Simon Stålenhag's book "Tales From the Loop," which was adapted into a successful Amazon Prime series of the same name. "In late 1997, a runaway teenager and her small yellow toy robot travel west through a strange American landscape where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside, along with the discarded trash of a high-tech consumerist society addicted to a virtual-reality system," the description of the source novel reads. After nearly half a year of negotiations, Netflix has closed a deal for the next big-budget movie from Joe and Anthony Russo.
The duo, known for the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame mega-blockbusters, will direct The Electric State for the streaming giant, a move that reunites them with the company behind their current project, the action movie The Gray May, which debuts in July.
Millie Bobby Brown, the breakout star of Netflix’s Stranger Things, is on board to star in the feature, with Chris Pratt, who appeared in the Russos’ Avengers movies, in talks to join her.
Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, longtime Russo scribes who worked on Gray Man as well as the Avengers pics, are writing the script.
The cost isn’t cheap. The project was previously set up at Universal, which eventually balked at the price tag and put it into turnaround.

Perhaps it’s unsurprising that Amazon is all in on clunky technological metaphors.
Following in the wake of 2020’s “Tales From the Loop,” about people living near a futuristic physics lab, and this year’s “Outer Range,” about a void or portal appearing on a rancher’s property, comes “Night Sky,” about a couple who possess a chamber capable of taking them to another planet. While it’s likely not useful to see all of Amazon Prime Video’s television properties as extensions of company founder Jeff Bezos’ will, there’s something very tidy at work here — the man does, after all, undertake short space voyages, making the fact that his company produces television about the mysteries and wonder of the cosmos feel marginally more revealing or intriguing.

Acclaimed artist Simon Stålenhag’s latest work Endymion, is being developed for the small screen. The Bridge creator Måns Mårlind is teaming with Infinite Entertainment, the production arm of visual effects and animation company Goodbye Kansas, and Stålenhag to develop Endymion as a television series. Besides the fact that it unites two Academy Award winning actors, J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek, Prime Video’s Night Sky also has another strange distinction. The series, which drops its eight-episode first season on May 20, 2022, will be the second time Simmons has appeared in a sci-fi drama in which a doorway to a hidden world lies below ground level. It’s an odd niche, to be sure!
The earlier series in question is the short-lived Counterpart, which, despite having only two seasons on Starz, gained a very loyal following, some of whom question the show’s absence from our Best Sci Fi TV Shows of the Past 15 Years. In Counterpart, Simmons played two versions of the same man in two parallel universes linked by an underground tunnel in Berlin, a circumstance that arose under mysterious circumstances during the Cold War era in an alternate version of our own history.

Ti West made his name directing nimbly paced throwbacks to horror films of old, from his haunted house breakthrough “The House of the Devil” to his found footage film “The Sacrament.” But after directing six horror films in a row, with very few breaks in between, he decided to take some time off to make sure he didn’t start repeating himself.
While on his break from horror filmmaking, during which he directed for TV shows such as “Scream,” and “Tales From the Loop,” he thought about making a pure slasher film, something he hadn’t done before. Trying to find his own unique spin on the subgenre, he decided to make slasher film about people making a film. He wasn’t interested in making an overly meta piece about shooting a horror movie, so he eventually settled on a close counterpoint to his favorite genre: porn.

Only four of the 24 films in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this year were directed by women. Statistically speaking, the odds that one will join Jane Campion as the lone woman to win a Palme d’Or are slim — and this in a year when Venice winner Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” went on to win three Oscars.
What better moment for the festival to honor one of the industry’s most respected female artists with an honorary Palme d’Or: Jodie Foster, viewed back home

The background of how Infinite was optioned is a fun, anecdotal tale steeped in what some might construe as fate, others simply dismiss as dumb luck. In 2009 former software developer D. Eric Maikranz self-published his debut novel The Reincarnationist Papers—the fictional memoirs of a man with memories of past lives who seeks to join a secret society of others like him—with the promise (printed on the front page) to give anyone able to put a copy into the pipeline at a Hollywood studio ten percent of the advance paid for turning it into a film. A junior executive stumbled upon a copy at a hostel, handed it off to the powers that be, and ultimately received his reward ten years later.

The 2021 recipients share a common thread in that each of their projects tells a story of humanity’s triumph over adversity. They include this year’s Oscar-winning animated film, a landmark documentary on climate change, a horror drama examining racism in America, an Emmy-nominated sci-fi series and an action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic United States:

The ASCAP Screen Music Awards kicked off a four-day virtual celebration Monday morning with the naming of winners in the peer-voted ASCAP Composers’ Choice Awards, with the score for Pixar’s “Soul” managing to notch yet another triumph as its sweep continues virtually unabated.
The number of categories for the performing rights organization’s still fairly new division of awards voted by fellow songwriters and composers was expanded in this round, with documentary score and television theme of the year being added for 2021.
In the film score of the year category, the “Soul” music proved that it has some life — or afterlife — left in it yet after recently triumphing at the Oscars. The award went to Trent Reznor and Jon Batiste, two of the composing trio behind the music.

Lindsey Kasabian, who most recently led casting efforts at Touchstone Television (aka Fox 21 Television Studios) as Vice President, has been named Senior Vice President of Casting for Freeform. Kasabian replaces Elizabeth Boykewich, who departed the Disney cable network as head of casting and talent earlier this month as part of the regime change at the net last May.
Working closely with Freeform President Tara Duncan, Kasabian will be responsible for identifying and helping to select the acting talent for all ongoing series and pilots at the cable net. The new assignment is effective immediately.
“Lindsey is a gifted executive who has distinguished herself as someone producers and executives trust, and Tara and I knew she was just the right person to help lead Freeform’s casting going forward,” said Sharon Klein, EVP of Casting, Walt Disney Television, to whom Kasabian will report. “She is a champion of actors and...

“A House on the Bayou,” the first straight-to-service movie in a new deal between Blumhouse and Epix, has found its three lead stars.
Paul Schneider (“Tales from the Loop”), Angela Sarafyan (“Westworld”), and Jacob Lofland (“Maze Runner”) will lead the cast on the project, which has already begun production in New Orleans.
Alex McAulay (‘Don’t Tell a Soul”) serves as writer and director on the film, which follows a troubled couple (Schneider and Sarafyan) who take a vacation to an isolated house in the Louisiana bayou to reconnect as a family. Their teenage daughter will be played by the young star of Marvel’s “The Eternals,” Lia McHugh. When unexpected visitors arrive, their facade of family unity starts to unravel, as terrifying secrets come to light.
Additional cast includes Lofland in a key role, as well as Doug Van Liew (“Ida Red”) and Lauren Richards (“Doom Patrol”) in supporting roles.

Beyond a successful career in music videos, Mark Romanek directed three feature films: Static in 1985, One Hour Photo in 2002, and Never Let Me Go in 2010. But then, curiously enough, the feature film work from Romanek stopped coming. He’s continued to helm music videos and also directed an episode of the Amazon series Tales From the Loop last […]

It’s been over a decade since the last Mark Romanek-directed feature, the Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation Never Let Me Go. Since its 2010 release, he’s become attached to rom-coms, thrillers, and even a Dan Brown adaptation––however none have come to fruition. Now another project is on his plate and one that will hopefully see the light of day.
Deadline reports he’s attached to direct the horror film Mother Land at Lionsgate. Scripted by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the story follows a family that has been haunted by an evil spirit for years. Their safety and their surroundings come into question when one of the children questions if the evil is real.
While that logline is sparse, we’re looking forward to seeing Romanek return to feature filmmaking after a decade of TV (including Vinyl and Tales From the Loop) as well as music videos featuring Beyoncé,...
