Though many of our most popular films about astronauts are about men, like the true stories behind "Apollo 13" and "The Right Stuff," there are some incredible women who have explored the cosmos, chief among them Sally Ride. Ride was the first American woman in space as one of the crew of a Challenger expedition to launch new satellites in 1983, and she went into space a second time on the Challenger in 1984, spending a total of around 14 days in orbit. She was a trailblazer who not only broke barriers in space travel but was an incredible mind, earning four different degrees from Stanford University, including a doctorate in physics. Though she retired from NASA in 1989 to pursue a career in academia, Ride held the unique distinction of being the only person to serve on the investigation boards for both NASA shuttle accidents, including the 1986 Challenger explosion. Sadly, Ride died in 2012 at...

It comes as no surprise that many classic TV shows and movies are making a comeback these days. While many people are still on the fence about remakes and revivals, as they tend to be worse than the originals, there are some gems that become fan favorites in no time. The second installment of The Night Manager could be another addition to that list.
Back in 2016, the show blew everyone away with its sharp writing and fast pacing. However, the 6-episode effort ended after one season and wasn't picked up to return. That was until the 2024 news of a comeback with another two seasons. And the second season already seems to be as great as anything we have seen before.

The next collaboration between Jason Statham and David Ayer (with a Sylvester Stallone script) – Levon’s Trade – is now shooting, with further casting announced.
Earlier this year we were treated to a rip-roaringly good time when director David Ayer and star Jason Statham brought us The Beekeeper. You can catch our review for that film here, but in short, it was lots of fun and following a theatrical run where it grossed north of $150m, it likely made a profit for all involved.
As such, the production companies behind The Beekeeper have once again acquired the services of Ayer and Statham and are hoping to repeat the trick once again, this time with Levon’s Trade.
As with The Beekeeper, Amazon MGM has agreed to handle distribution in the US, and none other than Sylvester Stallone has adapted the screenplay from Chuck Dixon’s novel.

Griselda is not the story of a hero. Inspired by the life of Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco, it’s a fictionalized dramatization in which “there are so many nuances to explore in terms of who she was as a woman, as a mother, and, of course, as a drug lord who created one of the most profitable cartels in history,” says executive producer and star Sofía Vergara.
The limited series recreates the early days of the cocaine craze — and new money — sweeping Miami in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Co-created and executive produced by Eric Newman and directed by executive producer Andrés Baiz, Griselda taps into a time when Griselda Blanco’s savagery and charisma helped her expertly navigate between business and family, to whom she was known simply as “the Godmother.”

The Netflix original Griselda has taken the world by storm, thanks to its fast-paced storytelling and immersive visuals. It really transports you to late-’70s Miami with its costumes and visuals. I suppose it’s one of those shows that you can gobble up in one sitting, so you’ll be looking for some sort of replacement now that it’s over. The show tells the story of Griselda Blanco, aka the Godmother, who took over the drug scene in Miami soon after she killed her second husband and fled with her kids from Medellín to Miami. Although her intention was to sell one brick of coke and set up a new life for herself, circumstances led to a completely different chain of events. We know you’re as addicted to these shows as the cokeheads who fell at the Godmother’s feet. The rise of the Godmother was quick and dramatic,...

Netflix brings the story of a notorious drug queenpin to life in Griselda. The six-episode limited series is inspired by the real saga of “Cocaine Godmother” Griselda Blanco, a Colombian woman who became a prominent player in Miami’s violent cocaine trade in the 1970s and 1980s.
Sofia Vergara plays Blanco, a ruthless underworld figure who relies on a combination of charm and savagery to navigate between business and family. Argentinean actor Martín Rodríguez plays her right-hand man, enforcer Rivi Ayala, who was in thrall to his powerful boss.
“Rivi Ayala is based on a real person who was very close to Griselda,” Rodríguez told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “He is completely fascinated by her and is willing to do anything for her.”

While Sofía Vergara was delighting millions of viewers for more than a decade as Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family, she was thinking about Griselda Blanco.
For 15 years, Vergara pored over the life of the woman known as the cocaine trade pioneer — who also earned the nicknames “The Godmother” and “The Black Widow” — for transforming the drug trade from Colombia to the United States, making her biggest mark in Miami, in the 1970s to the early 2000s.
Narcos boss Eric Newman had also spent time thinking about Blanco. The executive producer behind Netflix’s hit drug cartel franchise says he always wanted to tell the Colombian queenpin’s story and even considered bringing her into the Narcos fold while working the flagship series and spinoff Narcos: Mexico.
“The challenge that I found immediately with Griselda [Blanco] is that her story is so compelling; she’s such an anomaly,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter.

After “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico,” director Andrés Baiz was hesitant to return to the world of cartel crime dramas. At least until “Modern Family” star Sofía Vergara and her business partner Luis Balaguer approached Baiz and executive producer Eric Newman with the story of Griselda Blanco, the Cocaine Godmother.
“I’m going to be very honest here. Because I’m Colombian and had been working in ‘Narcos’ for seven years, I was a little bit over [the subject matter]. I wanted to do something different,” Baiz, who has also directed episodes of “The Sandman,” told TheWrap.
But when he was given the opportunity to guide Vergara through her prestige drama debut by directing and producing all six episodes of “Griselda,” Baiz changed his mind.

Following the success of the Narcos franchise, Netflix is diving headfirst back into another biographic series about the drug empire led by Griselda Blanco with Sofia Vergara. The new limited series, consisting of six episodes, is coming to Netflix globally in January 2024. Here’s what you need to know about Griselda.
News of the show first came about in November 2021, with Illuminerdi first reporting that a Narcos spin-off was in development with the same team. Days later, we also reported that the show was in development, and just a day after that, Netflix officially unveiled the title but was keen to stress that “there is no association or crossover between the shows.”
It’s taken a long time for Griselda to come to our screen. It reportedly took Latin World Entertainment eight years for the series to be picked up by a network.

Sofia Vergara, widely known for her role in “Modern Family,” is showcasing a radically different side in the upcoming Netflix series “Griselda.” She takes on the role of Griselda Blanco, a notorious figure in the Miami drug world. This six-episode drama, inspired by true events, delves into the life and times of Blanco, famously dubbed “the Godmother.”
Vergara’s transformation for the role is striking. She abandons her usual glamorous persona to embody Griselda Blanco’s ruthless nature. The recently released trailer highlights this change, presenting Vergara in a raw, unfiltered portrayal of the drug queenpin.

Amat Escalante brings great intensity to this story of a young man seeking out the truth of his mother’s disappearance, but the point gets rather lost
Amat Escalante is the Mexican film-maker who created the brutal and politically engaged crime drama Heli in 2013, for which he won the best director award in Cannes, and in 2016 the deeply strange body horror parable The Untamed which was a prizewinner at Venice. Now, after a stint on the streaming TV drama Narcos: Mexico he has directed and co-written this contorted Lynchian melodrama about Mexico’s corruption, cynicism and indifference, and all the secrets and lies that bloat the country’s ruling classes.
Lost in the Night concerns what may be the corpse of a woman buried in the grounds of a super-rich family and in this respect it rather resembles Robe of Gems from Natalia López Gallardo, who like Escalante has worked with Carlos Reygadas.
