Jennifer Nettles, lead vocalist of the country duo Sugarland and a successful solo artist, got into acting by playing Dolly Parton’s mother in the 2015 TV movie Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. Since then she has appeared in the sequel to that movie, Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, performed in Chicago and Waitress on Broadway, had roles in the film Harriet and the TV series Underground, and appeared on multiple episodes of the HBO show The Righteous Gemstones… which happens to be executive produced by David Gordon Green, so that paved the way for her to have a role in Green’s most recent film, The Exorcist: Believer. Now Deadline reports that Nettles is following her Exorcist role by being cast in another genre project: the horror action series The Bondsman!

Amanda Seyfried – whose credits include The Dropout, Mank, You Should Have Left, Mamma Mia!, Big Love, Jennifer’s Body, Veronica Mars, the original Mean Girls, and much more – has signed on to star in the suspense thriller limited series Long Bright River for the Peacock streaming service. The series is based on Liz Moore’s bestselling novel of the same name, and Deadline reports that word of this project leaked out after Seyfried and Moore were spotted taking a ride-along with the 26th District Police in Philadelphia earlier this week.
Long Bright River will see Seyfried taking on the role of Mickey, a police officer who patrols a Philadelphia neighborhood hard-hit by the opioid crisis. When a series of murders begins in the neighborhood, Mickey realizes that her personal history might be related to the case.

In a world where superheroes, sequels, horror (thankfully) and anything IP related are king, it seems as though the risqué original thriller has gone by the wayside. Over the past ten years or so you’d be hard pressed to find anything other than The Invisible Man, You Should Have Left, Gerald’s Game, Gone Girl, or Knock, Knock that really fit the mold (albeit with some finagling) and each of those is either tied to popular literature or skews closer to the horror genre.
But the original thriller thrived in the 1990s. Also thriving during this beautiful time in Hollywood were action movies featuring two adversaries face to face on the poster and/or movie cover. Movies like Face/Off, Point Break, Demolition Man, Universal Soldier, and Broken Arrow. 1992’s Unlawful Entry combines both of these elements with two heaping sides of the stalker and slasher horror subgenres. Which is why...

One of Kevin Bacon’s earliest roles came in the 1980 slasher classic Friday the 13th, and he has enjoyed returning to the horror genre now and then ever since. A few years ago, he teamed up with Blumhouse Television to try to get a television series follow-up to the creature feature Tremors going at Syfy. That didn’t work out, but now Bacon and Blumhouse Television are joining forces again for a horror action series called The Bondsman!
Deadline reports that The Bondsman is set up at Amazon’s Prime Video. Bacon will be taking on the role of Hub Halloran, a backwoods bounty hunter who comes back from the dead with an unexpected second chance at life, and love, and a nearly-forgotten musical career — only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.
The first season of the series is expected to consist of eight half-hour episodes.

While practically every other filmmaker seems to be pretending that the pandemic never happened, setting their films either before the plague or so far afterward that nobody talks about it anymore, Steven Soderbergh is out there mining the, shall we say, unique circumstances of the last few years for Hitchcockian thrills in “Kimi.”

David Koepp has been tapped to write the script for Universal Pictures and Amasia Entertainment’s The Green Hornet and Kato.
This past April, Universal optioned rights to The Green Hornet from Amasia, after co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo acquired control of the motion picture franchise from the family of the original creator George W. Trendle in a competitive bidding war in January.
Helfant, the former president of Marvel Studios, and Gallo will produce the film for Amasia.
The Green Hornet was one of early radio’s most popular adventure shows (predating Superman), before being turned into 1940s movie serials (from Universal ) and the 1966 TV series that introduced Bruce Lee (Kato) to the U.S. The classic story focuses on Britt Reid, owner-publisher of The Daily Sentinel. Armed with knowledge from his sources, cool weapons, a supercar known as the Black Beauty, and teamed with his trusty aide Kato,...

Over the course of the global pandemic, Universal Pictures was the first studio to bypass theaters and release select films via streaming, strike the only deals with major exhibitors to shorten the theatrical window, and introduce a new hybrid window that straddles theaters and homes.
That’s why 2020 will be remembered as a year full of bold moves for the trio of Universal marketing executives Variety is honoring with this year’s Marketing Visionary Award presented by Spotify: president of worldwide marketing Michael Moses, co-president of domestic marketing Dwight Caines and president of international marketing Simon Hewlett.
Listen to the podcast here:
It would be an understatement to say Covid-19 upended their business as the plans for dozens of movies scheduled over dozens of months to run in thousands of multiplexes worldwide had to be completely rethought. It was like nothing Moses experienced over the two decades he’s been promoting movies at Universal.

Having broken through off Broadway with Sean Penn and Val Kilmer, it’s no surprise that the actor has spent 35 years striving to put being a teen idol behind him. ‘I’m drawn to dark things,’ he says
Alarm bells would ring for most couples if one partner suggested marriage as the perfect subject for a horror movie. Kevin Bacon does not seem perturbed, though, that his latest film, You Should Have Left, was inspired by just such an idea that his wife, the actor Kyra Sedgwick, came up with.
“I’m drawn to dark things,” he says down the phone from their farm in Connecticut. “On some level, it’s therapeutic. I have a marriage that works and I didn’t have a tremendous amount of trauma as a child and yet I feel all human beings have darkness in their souls. Fear and anger and doubt live within us.

In terms of dealing with the pandemic and how to release existing or finished films without having movie theaters available until recently, Blumhouse has been one of the leaders. The company — in conjunction with its primary distributor, Universal Pictures — shifted the arrival of its summer horror movie, You Should Have Left, from theaters to VOD seamlessly, while movies that came out in theaters right before the coronavirus shut everything down — like The Invisible Man and The Hunt — also made the transition quickly and smoothly, extending their shelf life and possibly their audiences.
Now, with many theaters reopened around the country but not pulling in a lot of customers (and some closing again soon), Blumhouse has another surprise up its sleeve: the company has partnered with Amazon Prime to release eight new films through the platform, as part of an anthology series called Welcome to the Blumhouse. James Bond bailed on 2020, the world’s largest theater chain is now a junk bond, and studios broke a record for the most theatrical releases that switched to home platforms in a single week. Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (Warner Bros.) joins “Borat 2” (Amazon), “The Craft: Legacy” (Sony), and “Greenland” (ErosSTX) as titles to be available at home, all within the next few weeks (the first three this month).
All of this took place against the White House’s announcement that President Trump and the First Lady now have Covid. The Commander In Chief is (in)famous for downplaying the virus and that one day it will just disappear. Theaters might wish such magical thinking were the case; at this point, however, they may need to start casting spells of their own.

The Premium VOD debut of United Artists’ “Bill & Ted Face the Music” topped charts from the moment it debuted August 28. As a mid-budget title that’s thriving at $19.99, it could be as important as “Tenet” in determining the shape of movie distribution. “Bill & Ted” didn’t see much theatrical play, but given its day-and-date debut it also didn’t have the option. About 1,000 independent theaters did play the title, where by our estimate it grossed around $1.1 million, or around $1,000 per theater.
That’s not a lot, but it’s better than Searchlight’s theater-only flop “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Based on those two performances, UA made the right move: Searchlight devoted marketing spend to a disappointheatrical release that now must wait until November before it can play VOD.
“Bill & Ted” was first on all three possible charts. “Fatima” (Picturehouse), the other new PVOD entry, appeared on two.

After publishing his first novel, Cold Storage, last year, famed screenwriter David Koepp — whose work includes such movies as Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible and War of the Worlds — is unleashing a new novella titled Yard Work this week exclusively through Audible, the online audio book and podcast platform owned by Amazon.
In a recent phone interview, Koepp told us that completing Cold Storage gave him a desire to keep working in the prose format, saying, “I really enjoyed writing prose and it was a delight after almost 30 years of writing movies, which have their own sets of rules about what you can do, just in terms of the medium. It was great to be able to write in a different format and get inside a character’s head a little bit more. I really enjoyed that.”

On a weekend with some semblance of indoor theatrical moviegoing, the VOD and streaming charts hit maximum inconsistency. Among our four top-10 VOD rankings: Four different titles placed #1 and 25 movies occupied 40 total positions. Only “The Tax Collector” (#1 FandangoNow) and “The Silencing” (#1 AppleTV) made all four lists.
The other two #1 positions were taken by 2013 Jason Statham-starrer “Homefront” (Google Play), likely boosted by its bargain $3.99 price. At Spectrum, “The Deep Blue Sea 3” took the top spot as it moved off premium pricing.
Among the titles that debuted last Friday, “The Vanished,” directed by actor Peter Facinelli and starring Thomas Jane and Anne Heche as parents searching for their daughter, scored best. It was in second or third place at three sites (Spectrum ends its chart before Friday releases). The higher-profile “Tesla” from Michael Almereyda starring Ethan Hawke debuted at #2 at Apple TV, a platform that often presages later success at other sites.

Canada and the U.S. are in different worlds when it comes to Covid-19. The northern neighbor is good to go for most theaters (with safety measures in play). And with that, the country went its own way this weekend with two wide releases.
“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” took top spot for all theaters in both countries, grossing around $910,000 in 300 theaters. The Russell Crowe-starring thriller “Unhinged” was #2 with about $580,000 on 284 screens. “Peninsula,” the Korean “Train to Busan” sequel, made $119,000 in 45 theaters. This opens in 115 U.S. theaters this Friday.
In 2015, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water” opened to $55 million ion North America, and Canada generally earns about 10 percent of the two-country total. If the new SpongeBob” opened in North America in a world without Covid, we might factor in a falloff of interest in the franchise over five years; a reasonable guess might be a...

Shia Labeouf may have gotten famous as a Disney Channel child star before featuring in a number of box office hits that quickly turned him into one of the fastest-rising young talents in the business, but after swearing off big budget projects, the 34 year-old has spent the last little while reinventing himself as one of the most versatile and dedicated performers around.
He may still find himself in the headlines due to eccentric behavior, but he’s recently delivered a string of acclaimed performances in films like Borg vs. McEnroe, the semi-autobiographical Honey Boy and The Peanut Butter Falcon, the latter of which led to co-star Dakota Johnson claiming that he may even be the greatest actor of his generation.
Labeouf’s latest effort sees him working again with Fury director David Ayer, with The Tax Collector marking a return for the filmmaker to his roots with a gritty street-level crime drama.

All eight Harry Potter movies, which had a brief run on HBO Max when the WarnerMedia streaming service launched in May, are moving to Peacock this fall.
The availability on NBCUniversal’s streaming outlet, which went live in April before a national expansion in July, was specified as a six-month run starting in October and lasting into 2021. The shift aligns the films’ streaming presence with a broader licensing deal for the films, encompassing NBCUniversal TV networks. NBCU’s Universal Studios theme parks also have a popular Potter-themed attraction.

With less than three weeks before U.S. theaters reopen August 21, major studios have slowed their PVOD releases. With the promise of reopening comes a shot at a profitable theatrical life, but the PVOD revolution continued apace with Liongate’s “The Secret: Dare to Dream.” It immediately reached as high as #1 on VOD charts on Friday.
The film is the very definition of a high-concept presale: A self-help book published in 2006, “The Secret” was an Oprah Winfrey Club title that sold 30 million copies. Directed by Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), it stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. Gravitas Ventures and Roadside Attractions acquired it last November, and planned an April theatrical release. After the theaters closed, it moved to Roadside partner Lionsgate, which has a dedicated VOD division. It opened July 31 on PVOD at $19.99.
On FandangoNow, it landed immediately as #1 and holds the slot for the full week, despite having only three days of release.

Universal Pictures and AMC Theatres have ended a months-long feud over the distribution of the studio’s movies in both theaters and on premium VOD services. The battle, which began in April with Universal’s decision to premiere Trolls World Tour on PVOD instead of waiting for a theatrical release, had AMC CEO Adam Aron vowing at one point to ban all Universal product from AMC screens.
According to Deadline, films released under a new multi-year agreement between the world’s biggest exhibitor and one of its largest content producers will have a 17-day exclusive theatrical window at AMC facilities, after which Universal is free to make the title available on PVOD services, including AMC’s own AMC Theatres on Demand.

A diabolically clever script by actor-turned-director Dave Franco and mumblecore pioneer Joe Swanberg, The Rental has a simple premise: Take two couples with volatile sexual dynamics, have them rent an AirBNB for a weekend on the rugged Oregon coast, mix in secret cameras and the presence of a peeping psycho, and spike the steadily-building suspense with psychological insights. Yes, this is well-covered territory — see the recent You Should Have Left, which didn’t work at all. Yet Franco’s behind-the-cameras debut is sure to strike a chord for Covid-trapped audiences.

With Warner Bros. vacating its August 12 worldwide release date for “Tenet,” we’re still many weeks away from any approximation of normal business. Meanwhile, the VOD world continues apace with Rod Lurie’s Afghanistan war-set “The Outpost” leading the way. Now in its third week, the Screen Media title remains at #1 at Apple and Spectrum.
Perhaps even more impressive: “Outpost” is #2 at FandangoNow, which ranks by revenue — and Lurie’s film has a non-premium price of $6.99. Even outside a theater, some of its truisms remain — never underestimate the appeal of a military-themed film. This week looks to be the biggest yet for original feature films debuting online. We don’t have data for “Greyhound,” the Tom Hanks World War II drama that Sony sold to Apple for $70 million; ditto Sundance hit “Palm Springs” on Hulu, or what traction “Hamilton” had in its second Disney+ weekend.
In a business-as-usual world, those would be significant players. Of even greater note: 10 VOD originals filled 50 percent of the four top 10 VOD lists we track. This weekend reflects a shift to newer titles, rather than those that received a theatrical release.
Rod Lurie’s “The Outpost,” set during the Afghanistan war, is #1 at Apple, and #2 at FandangoNow and Spectrum in its second week. It seems to have staying power and has received endorsements that can help more than reviews, including this one from someone who was there:

The movie-going experience shifted to a TV-viewing opportunity in mid-March, once theaters shuttered due to the pandemic. Have you been buying what the VOD services are selling?
Because the coronavirus pandemic has forced major studios to take several of their biggest titles direct to consumer, our living rooms have become makeshift theaters. And while some of those films have wound up on Apple TV+, Netflix or Disney+, others have been released straight to VOD at a heftier price.

A trio of original films, all initially expected to have theatrical releases, found considerable interest at home over the holiday weekend. Broadway juggernaut “Hamilton,” Rod Lurie War movie “The Outpost,” and Jon Stewart’s political comedy “Irresistible” have little in common on the surface, but each served as a July 4th tie-in its way. Their shared success reflects a public that remains interested in original movies — wherever they may watch them.
“Hamilton,” set in the formative days of the republic, may have been the home viewing event of the weekend. Unlike rival Netflix, Disney+ doesn’t provide a list of its most popular offerings. Gauging response to the studio’s $75 million acquisition of the original show’s recording is mostly anecdotal, but app analytics provider Apptopia says Disney+ downloads over the weekend were 266,084 — a 72 percent increase when compared to the average number of Disney+ downloads over the four previous weekends.
