Out of hundreds of submissions, BET and Tracy Yvonne Productions has selected Thaddeus McCants as the winner of Project CRE8 which gives emerging TV writers the opportunity to develop an original comedy for the small screen.
The contest culminated on September 17 where the five Project CRE8 finalists pitched their original TV comedies to Tracy Oliver, Connie Orlando and a panel of TV execs. McCants’ original TV script Lit Lounge raced ahead to win. Lit Lounge is a satire on marijuana’s transition from Schedule-i drug to corporate commodity and follows a young Black man’s troubled climb to the top of the legal world of weed. BET will purchase McCants’ TV script for $25K and will work with him to develop a comedy series with Oliver’s Tracy Yvonne Productions.

Known primarily to audiences for her starring role in Netflix’s Stranger Things – where she plays Nancy Wheeler – it’s great to see young actress Natalia Dyer in another fun-filled project, this time in the coming-of-age comedy Yes, God, Yes. To mark the film’s digital release we had the pleasure of speaking to Dyer via Zoom.
We discuss the attraction of this project, and whether she enjoys going back and playing students, and whether it makes her feel nostalgic. She talks about the film’s more serious themes too, that counteract the playful elements, looking into the oppression of women’s sexuality, particularly in religious schools. And of course we couldn’t help but ask her about the forthcoming season of Stranger Things, as she gives a brief update as to where she show currently is, and what fans can expect.
Watch the full interview with Natalia Dyer here:...

The third outing for the Yes Studios-produced drama about an Orthodox family in Jerusalem will pick up four years after the events of the previous season. The nine episodes will air on Yes TV in Israel later this year and will likely show on Netflix next year though a date has yet to be finalized.
Netflix picked up the second and third season of the drama in 2018.
The series follows a Haredi family living in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Jerusalem reckoning with love, loss and the doldrums of daily life. Over the past few decades, most coming-of-age films have explored sexuality from the male point of view, but Natalia Dyer’s latest coming-of-age film, Yes, God, Yes, provides an all-too-rare look at sexuality from the female perspective. Dyer plays Alice, a teenage Catholic school student who participates in a risqué AOL chat and seeks redemption at a spiritual retreat. Once Dyer heard about filmmaker Karen Maine’s project, the actor immediately recognized that its female-driven narrative could fill a major void for young women, including her younger sister.

Amazon Studios brings the story of Marie Curie to the screen with Radioactive starring Oscar-nominated actress Rosamund Pike as the pioneering scientist.
Directed by Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and written by Jack Thorne, Radioactive is based on the 2010 graphic novel Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss. The film adaptation follows Curie’s life and the legacy of scientific breakthroughs. At the same time, the story tells the darker consequences that came about after her amazing work.
Curie married fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley) who went on to raise two daughters and change the face of science forever by jointly winning the Nobel for the discovery of radium in 1903. After the death of her husband, Curie continues her research and invites scandal when she has an affair with another prominent scientist, Paul Langevin (Aneurin Barnard). However, it is Marie’s commitment to science which prevails,...

The adults––worse, the other kids––of Karen Maine’s Yes, God, Yes all seem to be in on an elaborate inside joke. It can be tough to talk about sex, and it’s especially tough for Alice (Natalia Dyer), a sixteen-year-old stuck in Iowa catholic school. Rumors fly that she “tossed her classmates’ salad.” No one will tell Alice what that means.
Over the course of her 77-minute debut and an extracurricular Catholic retreat, Maine stages Alice being let-in on the secret. In the hands of the Obvious Child co-writer, Alice’s liberation from her repressive upbringing comes in the form of self-discovery––and in a distinctly awkward way, it’s pretty funny too. The coming-of-age genre has seen a real explosion in the last few years, but nothing quite like this. The Film Stage spoke with Maine about Yes, God, Yes, and her approach to sexuality on-screen.

Yes fans have spent the past 15 years hoping that the surviving members of the group will put aside their differences for a reunion tour, but guitarist Steve Howe tells Rolling Stone that that is a very unlikely proposition.
“I don’t think [the fans] should stay up late nights worrying about that,” he says. “There’s just too much space out there between people. To be in a band together or even to do another tour like Union is completely unthinkable.”
He’s referencing the group’s 1990 Union LP and tour, where...

It’s an idea that’s probably a tough sell to anyone who never came of age in the cloistered world of Catholic high schools: that the coolest event imaginable to upperclassmen was a weekend-long retreat in which the only priority was to get closer to God. Every minute of it was scheduled to maximize devotion and confession, every moment was overseen by a stern teacher or clergyperson, the idea of even sneaking in a cell phone was so foreign as to not even be considered, and the most in-demand accessory was a neon-covered “teen Bible” that mistook Comic Sans as a hip font choice. Crying was all but required, sharing horribly embarrassing secrets was the primary currency, and when someone would ask if 48 hours at a faux campsite about 30 minutes from campus had changed your life, there was only one acceptable answer: “yes, God, yes!”

Yes, God, Yes is a fresh, fun look at what solo explorations of sexuality can look like for a girl in the Midwest. Vertical Entertainment will premiere the film in Virtual Cinemas and select drive-ins on Friday, July 24, and the film will launch on digital and VOD platforms on Tuesday, July 28.

We’re now at the halfway point of 2020 and while this year has seen some excellent films get a release, it’s been a tumultuous time determining the exact release calendar each month. As distributors are deciding often on-the-fly what strategies work best, as we look towards July, we’ve gathered our most-anticipated new arrivals based on what is currently scheduled.
We’ll also note that as of this publishing date A24 still has Saint Maud on its theatrical release schedule for July 17th, but we’ll be surprised if that takes shape, so we’ll only mention it at the top here. However, the company will definitely release at least one of their acclaimed features this month, which we’ll kick this list off with.
Special Mention: First Cow (Kelly Reichardt; July 10)
Following up career-best work in her triptych tale Certain Women, Kelly Reichardt is back with a masterfully-directed,...

Although we may be past the heyday of studio sex comedies, and comedies in general when it comes to Hollywood output, the indie film world is picking up the slack and next month will bring a highly-acclaimed one. Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer is breaking out of the family-friendly Netflix mold for Yes, God, Yes. Directed by Karen Maine (co-writer of Obvious Child), the semi-autobiographical debut explores sexuality for one girl growing up in the Midwest. Following a premiere at last year’s SXSW, where it won a Special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble, the first full trailer has arrived.
John Fink said in our SXSW review, “Similar to last year’s inclusive comedy Blockers–which proved teen girls deserve their own kind of high school sex comedy like the boys have enjoyed for years–Yes, God, Yes continues to evolve the genre while remaining completely grounded in its complexities and contradictions.
