How do we know what music is actually good? Many fans look to critics. Sure, some might label music journalism as irrelevant in assigning value to art, but the reality is, critics do at least partly contribute to the consensus on the quality of music. That’s why, whether it is during a civilized conversation or the most rabid Twitter stan war, an album’s Metacritic score typically comes up. So award show voters must take those top albums more into consideration than others, right? To be a big awards player, doesn’t your album need to be somewhat acclaimed?
Let’s take a look at the past three Grammy ceremonies as examples. Since these are ceremonies with no nomination review committees involved, the results are a more accurate, unfiltered reflection of what voters think. According to Metacritic, anything below 81 is not “universally acclaimed,” so that’s how I’ll sort it out.

The 29-year-old British star Jacob Collier has risen to fame from YouTube all the way to the Grammys, earning six trophies throughout his career. While Collier was a Grammy favorite from his first album, “Djesse Vol. 3” was the one to put him on the radar for a lot of folks, earning three Grammy noms including for Album of the Year. That nomination was quite unexpected and launched Collier to a lot more fame, especially as his fusion of jazz/R&b/pop is quite unique and not what many would expect to cross over to the Grammy mainstream. Despite not being a huge commercial artist, Collier might be looking at his biggest year ever at the Grammys with his new album, “Djesse Vol. 4.” But just how much recognition will Collier get?

To combat the ominous atmosphere of the Ides of March, Netflix has another Lindsay Lohan film, “Irish Wish,” which is now streaming. The follow-up to “Falling for Christmas” in Lohan’s deal with the streamer to make two films, “Irish Wish” focuses on love, luck and a little bit of magic in the rom-com that arrives right before Saint Patrick’s Day.

Renowned singer Tony Bennett died on July 21 at age 96, but he leaves behind a long legacy. Bennett was an iconic jazz and pop vocalist who rose to prominence in the 1950s and netted 19 Grammys during his lifetime. Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett first met at the Robin Hood Foundation gala in New York City, where she had performed a version of Nat King Cole’s “Orange Colored Sky.” Bennett asked Gaga to sing a duet with him on his next album 2011’s Duets II, which was timed to his 85th birthday. Their performance of “The Lady Is a Tramp” would be the first collaboration between the two and the beginning of an enduring friendship that lasted throughout Bennett’s final years.
On Monday, Gaga posted a moving tribute to Bennett, who died July 21 at 96. “I will miss my friend forever,” she writes. I will miss singing with him, recording with him, talking with him, being on stage together.”

Long before the death of Tony Bennett, who died earlier this month at the age of 96, Lady Gaga had been mourning the loss of a dear friend and collaborator. Despite the 50 years between them, the pop singer and the beloved standards crooner found a transformative connection through music that prevailed even as Bennett’s Alzheimer’s disease increasingly impacted his memory (he was diagnosed in 2016). But even in mourning, Gaga is honoring the time spent and the songs sung with Bennett, on and off the stage.

“I will miss my friend forever. I will miss singing with him, recording with him, talking with him, being on stage together,” Gaga wrote in a message posted to Instagram on Monday, July 31st. “With Tony, I got to live my life in a time warp. Sure he taught me about music, about showbiz life, but he also showed me how to keep my spirits high and my head screwed on straight. ‘Straight ahead,’ he’d say. He was an optimist, he believed in quality work And quality life.

Updated with CBS special: MTV has set three back-to-back re-airings of its two Unplugged specials featuring Tony Bennett, commemorating the beloved singer’s death today at 96. MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett from 1994 will return tonight at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, followed by 2021’s MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga at 11.
Both will repeat starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Bennett’s first Unplugged aired as the second episode of MTV’s fifth season of the acoustic-concert series and spawned a smash album. The 20-track set of standards from the Great American Songbook barely dented the Billboard Top 50 but won Album of the Year and another Grammy and eventually sold more than a million copies. Recorded on April 15, 1994, at Sony Studios in Manhattan, the show — which also featured Elvis Costello and k.d. lang — and the disc helped introduce the legendary singer to yet another generation of fans.

The generational divide between Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga didn’t matter. The timeless crooner and pop superstar developed a friendship that transcended time, just like the best music tends to do. Bennett’s death at age 96 means we won’t see them team up again, but we’ll always have their two albums to listen to. Bennett and Gaga seemed like an unlikely duet, but their collaboration made for some memorable moments and Grammy success.

Tony Bennett has passed away at the age of 96. The legendary singer died in New York on July 21, his publicist Sylvia Weiner told the Associated Press. In 2021, his family revealed that he'd been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease five years earlier. Bennett released his final album, "Love For Sale," in 2021, a collaboration with Lady Gaga. He performed his final shows at Radio City Musical Hall in August 2021 with Gaga by his side.
Bennett was born Anthony Benedetto in 1926 in New York's Long Island City. Bennett served in the Army during World War II before diving headfirst into his musical career. He had his first major success in 1951 with the single "Because of You." His signature song was 1962's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Bennett rose to fame during that era, but his career began to flounder during the 1970s.
The singer suffered a near-fatal cocaine overdose in 1979, after which he turned his career around.

Tony Bennett, the treasured American storyteller, singer and showman whose joyful impact on the pop and jazz landscape spanned 70 years and stretched from Queens to San Francisco and all around the world, died Friday. He was 96.
Bennett died in his hometown of New York, his publicist Sylvia Weiner said. In February 2021, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years earlier, but he soldiered on, in the recording studio and on tour, rarely performing a song the same way twice.
He and Lady Gaga headlined two shows at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in August 2021, after which he announced he was canceling his fall tour.

Tony Bennett has died at the age of 96.
The singer’s publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed his death to The Associated Press on Friday morning, saying he died in his hometown of New York. There was no specific cause of death, but Bennett had been battling Alzheimer’s disease.
No one was more surprised by the duration and arc of Bennett’s career than Bennett himself.
“I can’t tell you how fortunate I feel about all this,” Bennett said during a 2006 interview, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. “I never really thought I’d be doing it this long… and it’s so much more than I ever imagined it would be. So I’m just thrilled.”
Bennett went out on a high note, too. Having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, he kept working as able, bringing his performing career to a close with duet partner Lady Gaga...

We just introduced the Gold Derby Music Awards in 2021, but we already have a number of artists double-dipping. This year Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and Finneas have become the first individuals nominated at both our Gold Derby Music and Film Awards in the same year.
There had been 18 years of Gold Derby Film Awards when we introduced our music kudos, so there were already a number of artists nominated for their music last year whom we’d previously recognized for their film achievements, including Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and songwriter Max Martin. And Gaga became the first artist ever to win at both events: Best Original Song and Best Original Song of the Decade for “Shallow” from “A Star is Born” at our film awards, Best Music Video for “Rain on Me” at last year’s music awards.

The 1995 Grammys ceremony was one of the most interesting the award show has ever had. Most relevant to this year, it was the last year without nomination review committees. And not coincidentally, it was the year Tony Bennett won Album of the Year for his “MTV Unplugged.” Bennett’s win is an interesting one to ponder, especially as he is now nominated for Album of the Year again for “Love for Sale” with Lady Gaga.
Bennett has always been on the Grammys’ radar. His first wins were at the 5th Grammy Awards, where he took home Record of the Year and Best Male Solo Vocal Performance for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Bennett was a consistent nominee for a couple years after that, but dropped off the awards’ radar for 25 years until in 1991 his album “Astoria: Portrait Of The Artist” became his first nomination since 1966.

With a new Grammy ceremony coming on January 31, a few records are poised to be broken. Here are four artists looking to make a splash and cement themselves even more in Grammy history than they already are.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: R&b album races include tough match-up between H.E.R., Jon Batiste, and Jazmine Sullivan Tony Bennett
This pop standards legend has a couple of records he could break due to his multiple nominations for his Lady Gaga collaboration album, “Love For Sale.” If Bennett wins any category come January, he will become the second oldest person to ever win a Grammy, at 95 years and 181 days. The current record is held by Pinetop Perkins, who won nearing 98-years-old. Furthermore, if Bennett wins one (or both) of his general field nominations, he will be the oldest person ever to win a general field award. He’s already the oldest person ever to be nominated in those categories.

Grammy winners for pop over the decades have run the gamut from The Beatles to Billie Eilish. This year the two pop album categories include past winners and first-time nominees. But who will strike gold this time? Let’s take a look.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: R&b album races include tough match-up between H.E.R., Jon Batiste, and Jazmine Sullivan Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album
There is virtually no way Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett don’t win here. Their album is not only the only one nominated in another pop category, it’s also the only one nominated for both Record and Album of the Year, not to mention Best Engineered Album and Best Music Video. The similarly beloved Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, the former who actually beat Bennett last time they competed in this category, could perhaps surprise … But don’t overthink this, “Love For Sale” is winning.

Lady Gaga had a good winter in 2019. On February 10 of that year she added three Grammys to her career haul, including Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Visual Media Song for “Shallow” from her film “A Star is Born.” Exactly two weeks later she won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Winning both awards in the same season is impressive enough, but there’s a chance she could do it again in 2022.
She’s a Best Actress Oscar contender for her role in Ridley Scott‘s true-crime drama “House of Gucci,” in which she plays Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of arranging the murder of her ex-husband, fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci. As of this writing Gaga is on the bubble for a nomination, ranked sixth with 19/2 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The Grammy nominations finally arrived on November 23, and we all have thoughts and opinions about music’s most coveted award. Here are some of my main takeaways from this year’s eclectic set of noms.
SEEGrammy nominations: Olivia Rodrigo is rare artist nominated in all 4 general field categories … and so is Finneas Americana is a powerful voting bloc, even without nomination review committees
A standout this year was the multiple nominations that Americana artists bagged in the general field. In Album of the Year, Jon Batiste’s “We Are,” an album that got heavy triple-a airplay and plays with both Americana and R&b, was the surprise nomination of the year.
Batiste’s “Freedom” also got a nomination in Record of the Year, and so did Brandi Carlile‘s “Right on Time.” Furthermore, Carlile’s single made it into Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, the latter...

There were major changes in how these nominees were decided. Chief among those was the elimination of the nomination review committees. Those secret, anonymous panels often produced surprising results: this past year The Weeknd was shut out entirely. Grammy eligibility can be quite confusing. The rules are full of loopholes, complicated requirements, and eligibility dates that can sometimes complicate who and what is eligible and for what. Here’s a quick explanation for all you newer Grammy predictors.
For a song to be eligible, it has to meet one of three criteria: (1) come out as a single during the eligibility period (September 2020 through September 2021), (2) be part of an album released during the eligibility period, or (3) be promoted as a single during the eligibility even if its parent album came out the previous year, provided that album did not win a Grammy. Most songs fit the first criteria.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
However, it is common to see songs compete that were released during a past eligibility season but are included on an album released during the current eligibility season. A famous example is Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts.

For the first time in Grammy history, the race to accrue nominations and ultimately the final contest itself may come down to a battle of the teenaged girls. Olivia Rodrigo, a newcomer at 18, and Billie Eilish, veritably a veteran now at 19, are the leading contenders to pick up multiple nods when the nominees for the 2022 Grammy Awards are announced Nov. 23. Yes, Eilish, whose birthday is Dec. 18, will officially have graduated out of her teens by the time the ceremony takes place Jan. 23, but it’ll still be a prodigy-vs.-prodigy contest in which we can be assured that not many elder voters will be holding their preternaturally talented superstars’ youth against them.
Rodrigo and Eilish may be the only two stars who can be considered 100% locks to be nominated in the top three categories — album, record and song of the year — but the odds also favor Taylor Swift and Lil Nas X...

It’s been almost six months since Taylor Swift topped the Billboard 200 albums chart with “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” the re-recorded edition of her Grammy-winning blockbuster. But she shot back to the top for the tracking week that ended on October 7, 2021. That’s because, even in an era of streaming driving a lot of chart success, Swift remains the queen of sales. Read more here at Billboard.
“Fearless” jumped 156 spots back to its number-one perch thanks to the release of its vinyl edition as well as signed CDs in Swift’s own merchandise store. It achieved 152,000 equivalent album units, of which traditional sales accounted for 146,000. Streaming only added up to about 6,000 units. That brings this version of “Fearless” to a total of 400,000 in total sales, which makes it the second biggest seller of 2021. It’s behind Swift’s own “Evermore,” which has sold 434,000 copies. Harry Connick Jr. has already heard enough people ask him, “Cole Porter, who’s that?” He even says a younger person mistook Porter for Nat King Cole (No, Porter did not write “The Christmas Song”). Fortunately, this won’t stop younger audiences from enjoying Harry Connick Jr: A Celebration of Cole Porter at the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway.
Connick’s residency runs from through December 29th, with a 25-piece orchestra and rolling stage sets. This is the jazz musician’s third concert on Broadway, and perhaps the most extravagant, showcasing all of his talents: singing,...

Returning to Broadway, Harry Connick Jr. chooses his muse wisely and well, taking the stage in an attractively modern, multi-media setting to celebrate that most sophisticated of the American songbook’s founders, Cole Porter.
At its frequent best, Harry Connick Jr.: A Celebration of Cole Porter, opening tonight at the Nederlander Theatre, pairs Porter’s songwriting genius with Connick’s superb musicianship, supple, ear-pleasing vocals and a brash confidence that pushes the music from the comfort of classic pop into bolder, jazzier terrain. Where Connick leads, his audience knows to follow.

In the opening scene of Werner Herzog’s new feature “Family Romance, LLC,” a well-dressed, slightly nervous-looking man stops a 12-year old girl in Tokyo and explains that he’s her father, who left the family when she was only 16 months old and would now like the rekindle the relationship. The man, Yuichi, and the girl, Mahiro, then have a lovely interlude looking at the cherry blossoms in Yoyogi Park.
It’s all very bucolic until the next scene, which reveals that he’s actually been hired by Mahiro’s mother to impersonate her real father, who is deceased.
And “Family Romance, LLC” just gets odder from there — especially if you realize that the guy playing the “dad,” Yuichi Ishii, actually runs a real Japanese company called Family Romance, and he’s playing himself doing what he actually does for a living. A curious little meditation on the extent to...
