"Responsible Child" is based on the murder of Neil Tulley, 54, who was butchered to death by his two stepsons, Jerome and Joshua Ellis, in Guildford, Surrey, in 2013. They stabbed their abusive stepfather 65 times, nearly decapitating him, because they were in fear of what he might do to them or the rest of their family. He had previously attacked both the elder brother Joshua and their mother. Joshua was convicted of murder - but his brother, Jerome, was just 14 years old and found guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of loss of control. He was sentenced to six years in detention (apparently not adult prison) and was released after serving less than that. He is now free and living under a new name.
Joshua Ellis, 23, and his 14-year-old brother, Jerome, stabbed Tulley 65 times as he slept on the sofa - leaving him almost decapitated.
