The Peabody Board of Jurors released the rest of the 2024 Peabody Awards nominees today and the results were somewhat surprising. Comprising the Arts, Children’s/Youth, Entertainment, Interactive, and Immersive categories, the list of honorees included anticipated programs such as “The Last of Us,” “The Bear” and “Bluey.” What was something of a shock was a snub of the critically acclaimed and awards favorite, “Beef.”

Beyond “Last of Us” and “The Bear,” other Entertainment category nominees include “Poker Face,” “Lupin,” “Blue Eyed Samurai,” “Somebody Somewhere,” “Dead Ringers,” “Reservation Dogs,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Israel-Hamas War,” “Reality,” and “Jury Duty.” Surprising nominees included “Fellow Travelers” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
On the Children/Youth front, “Bluey” was joined by fellow Disney+ series “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” and “Summer Camp Island.

April showers might bring May flowers but on Disney+, April brings us all a heaping dose of Jeremy Renner. That’s right, friends, Disney+’s list of new releases for April 2023 includes the event we’ve all been waiting for: Rennervations.
A balm for those missing the Jeremy Renner app, Rennervations will make use of Marvel star Jeremy Renner’s last name and interest in renovation. Will the show be good? Who knows! But it sounds goofily fun enough and was a great excuse to use that photo of Hawkeye (Renner) and Captain America (Anthony Mackie) enjoying each other’s company.
Elsewhere on Disney+ this month is a whole lot of Star Wars. The season 3 finale of The Mandalorian will premiere on April 19. That will be immediately followed by a fresh Star Wars series, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. Set during The High Republic era, this animated show will follow...

“The Beyonder is just wacky, silly, fun,” says Laurence Fishburne of his smooth supervillain in this exclusive clip from the next episode of “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.” The character makes his debut in the Disney+ series on Saturday, Feb. 25.
“He comes to Earth in search of the smartest person who can teach him what humanity is all about. And it happens to be Lunella,” he says of the 13-year-old main character, who’s voiced by Diamond White. The genius tween and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur, work together to protect New York City’s Lower East Side.
“I love ‘Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur’ for the same reasons I loved everything about Marvel comics since I was a kid,” says Fishburne. “The writers were writing what was happening outside the window in New York City, where I grew up.”

Move over diamonds; it seems like Dinosaurs are a girl’s best friend. At least, that’s the case for Lunella Lafayette (Diamond White) in Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Based on the comic book of the same name, the series follows Lunella, a Black 13-year-old Manhattanite who uses her genius to accidentally conjure up a giant red Devil Dinosaur (Fred Tatasciore) through a time portal she’s created. Luckily for Lunella, and the entire Lower East Side neighborhood, she befriends the prehistoric creature and uses their unique partnership to fight crime in the area under the moniker of Moon Girl.
Another unique thing about the animated show, brought to life by actor Laurence Fishburne and producer Helen Sugland, is that it makes Marvel history for featuring the first Black female lead character in a Marvel television show. Lunella’s onscreen debut further adds to the recent strides...

Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.
When Bipoc narratives are controlled by non-bipoc creatives, character story lines may lack authenticity,...
