Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, went through three months of rehearsals for the part, which included learning to ride horses, work with dogs, scuba dive, row and operate a horse carriage. “I’ve never done so much training in my life,” says the 27-year-old London native, whose credits include 2019’s A Dog’s Way Home and the BBC drama World on Fire.
Hauer-King first tried out for The Little Mermaid as a “fun experience,” thinking it would never go anywhere. Seven months of auditions ensued, which included an Ariel-esque moment of losing his voice the day before he was asked to sing in front of director Rob Marshall (he met with Marshall a few weeks later to try again). The actor also screen-tested alongside star Halle Bailey, eventually landing a role that Harry Styles also was up for (“He’s pretty cool and amazingly talented,...

Disney‘s live-action The Little Mermaid is swimming toward Memorial Day Weekend with a song in its heart and dollar signs in its eyes. The latest version of the Disney animated classic is tracking toward a $110M 4-day opening. That number puts The Little Mermaid in the top eight spots for a Memorial Day Weekend release. The upcoming musical won’t touch Top Gun: Maverick’s $160.5M Memorial Day start, but $110M is an outstanding total nonetheless.
Disney has a history of releasing films on Memorial Day Weekend, including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which earned $153M, the studio’s highest total for the 4-day holiday debut. Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin earned $116.8M in 2019, placing the Guy Ritchie-directed fantasy film slightly above The Little Mermaid’s expected launch.

Disney‘s CinemaCon panel is underway, with new footage from The Little Mermaid dazzling event guests. During The Little Mermaid presentation, Melissa McCarthy, who plays the villain, Ursula, took the stage. She introduced her iconic musical number, “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” from the upcoming film. JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray is our boots on the ground at CinemaCon this week. He says the song gives off a burlesque vibe, with McCarthy having a great time strutting her stuff.
Unfortunately, Chris also says the lighting of the film is poor. It’s worth noting the preview is screening in Dolby Vision, so there’s little excuse for the clip to look as dark as it does. Still, Chris says the cast looks good, and Halle Bailey could win audiences over with her outstanding performance. Overall, the film seems faithful to the animated original, even if aspects of the plot and music will change for the new version.

Disney's never-ending line of live-action remakes continues in May — there's actually another one later this week, in "Peter Pan & Wendy" — with "The Little Mermaid." Featuring new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda ("Hamilton"), who's also among the producers alongside director Rob Marshall ("Chicago"), the underwater tale of Ariel the Mermaid is unfurling on the big screen next month. Halle Bailey ("Grown-ish") plays Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King ("A Dog's Way Home") as Eric, the human prince she falls in love with.
Awkwafina ("The Farewell"), Daveed Diggs ("Hamilton"), and Jacob Tremblay ("Room") lend their voices to King Triton's trusted crab servant Sebastian, Ariel's dimwitted seabird friend Scuttle, and Ariel's tropical fish best friend Flounder, respectively. Javier Bardem is playing Ariel's father, King Triton, with Noma Dumezweni ("The Watcher") as Eric's mother Queen Selina, an original character. Lastly, Melissa McCarthy plays the conniving sea witch Ursula, who has ambitions to take over Triton's kingdom.

Disney’s two-minute The Little Mermaid featurette kicks off with the new Ariel, Halle Bailey, describing the original Little Mermaid as changing her world. “Like so many of us little girls, we all just wanted to be mermaids,” says Bailey, adding, “This Little Mermaid reflects what it means to want something greater for yourself.”
The video features new clips from the live-action adaptation along with interviews with director Rob Marshall, Melissa McCarthy (“Ursula”), Awkwafina (the voice of “Scuttle”), Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The film also features Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home) as Prince Eric, Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as the voice of Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay (Luca) voices Flounder. Noma Dumezweni (Mary Poppins Returns) is Queen Selina, Art Malik (Homeland) is Sir Grimsby, and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) plays King Triton.
Oscar nominee Rob Marshall (Chicago) directed from a screenplay by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee.

Disney’s two-minute trailer for the live-action The Little Mermaid debuted during the 2023 Oscars. The new Ariel and Ursula – Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy – took the stage and introduced the trailer, which was sort of bizarre given that it felt like part of the show rather than a commercial. Weird introduction aside, the trailer’s packed with clips reminiscent of the classic animated film and features Bailey singing “Part of Your World.”
The trailer arrived online following its Oscar debut, along with a new poster and photos.
Joining Bailey and McCarthy in the live-action reimagining are Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home) as Prince Eric, Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as the voice of Sebastian, Awkwafina (Raya and the Last Dragon) as the voice of Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay (Luca) voices Flounder. Disney is excited to make a new poster for The Little Mermaid part of your world ahead of a full trailer drop during the Oscars this Sunday, March 12, 2023. The Little Mermaid poster depicts Halle Bailey’s Ariel perched on a rock in the middle of the ocean, dreaming of life above sea level. With her eyes closed, Ariel imagines a world where people dance on two feet, breathe the open air, and settle down in villages after falling in love. A sun burns brightly behind a clouded sky, foreshadowing Ursula’s arrival and dishonest dealings. The Little Mermaid poster is beautiful, though it would have been nice for Disney to let some of the light in.

Disney is taking Mouseketeers under the sea for The Little Mermaid teaser trailer. The reimagining of the classic fairy tale is already one of the most anticipated films of the year, thanks to a stunning promo released last year featuring Halle Bailey‘s Ariel belting out a stirring rendition of “Part of Your World.”
In The Little Mermaid teaser trailer, Bailey’s Ariel explores an underwater kingdom filled with wonders while dreaming of the surface. After Ariel interacts with a Pufferfish, she floats among a school of jellyfish before kissing Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) in a dimly-lit grotto draped with curtains of seaweed. At the end of the trailer, we get our first look at Melissa McCarthy as the evil sea witch Ursula. In the promo, Ursula belts out an insidious cackle while her tentacles obscure the bottom portion of her face.

Air Bud — the Disney film about a dog who could play basketball (and which starred Buddy, a golden retriever that could indeed launch the ball into the net with his nose) — first dribbled its way into our hearts 25 years ago.
The idea for Air Bud had been hatched by Canadian brothers Robert and William Vince, who churned out low-budget horror films. When they caught Buddy on Late Show With David Letterman, inspiration struck for a family film. They described the idea to director Charles Martin Smith (who’d go on to direct 2011’s Dolphin Tale and 2019’s A Dog’s Way Home).
“I said, ‘That just sounds horrible,’ ” Smith recalls of their pitch. “This is what I said to them: ‘If you’d let me rewrite it and make it honest — a classic story of a boy and his dog — I’ll be in.

Bryce Dallas Howard is set to direct and produce a reboot of “Flight of the Navigator” for Disney+, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The film will reimagine the story with a female lead. The 1986 original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by a UFO and reappears eight years later at the same age, with no recollection of what happened. Randal Kleiser (“Grease”) directed, and it was written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton and Matt MacManus.
The film, although distributed by Disney, was produced and financed by now defunct company Producers Sales Organization. Disney tried to remake the film in 2009 with Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly attached to pen the script, but Disney lost the rights to Lionsgate in the 2010s. However, the studio couldn’t get the project off the ground, so it reverted back to Disney.
John Swartz and Justin Springer are also producing.

The first import to break through China’s nearly two-month political moratorium on foreign films apparently won’t be “Black Widow” or “Space Jam: A New Legacy.” Instead, Beijing is opening its doors to an unlikely contender for August: a little-known British Christmas film about a cat.
“A Christmas Gift From Bob” — a seasonal, feel-good sequel to the uplifting 2016 biographical drama “A Street Cat Named Bob” — will hit Chinese screens on Aug. 6. The first film told the real-life story of how busker and recovering addict James Bowen turned his life around after befriending a stray cat, and was based on Bowen’s memoirs. The second finds Bowen fighting to keep Bob by his side after the local authorities attempt to take the cat away during Christmas.

Top Chinese director Feng Xiaogang will step in front of the camera alongside Chinese-American actor-director Joan Chen in a local adaptation of the 2009 Hollywood tearjerker “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale,” which began shooting Thursday.

Most actors are lucky if they manage to play one iconic role throughout their entire career, with Sylvester Stallone one of the very few that has two cinematic legends to his name. The 74 year-old’s performances as both Rocky Balboa and John Rambo cover thirteen movies and over 40 years, and now the headband-wearing Vietnam veteran has joined the Italian Stallion in being immortalized as a landmark.
Stallone recently revealed that two massive Rambo statues had been erected in Hope, the tiny Canadian town where the vast majority of the character’s first outing in 1982 action classic First Blood was shot. For a town with a population that’s only a little over 6,000, Hope has proved to be a very popular location for Hollywood productions over the years with actioners like Shoot to Kill, romances Hope Springs and Fire with Fire, family films White Fang II and A Dog’s Way Home...

GLAAD has released its annual Studio Responsibility Index, a thorough analysis of LGBTQ representation in major studio films, and progress was slow in 2019. While the number of LGBTQ characters increased, the appearance of non-white LGBTQ characters decreased and transgender characters were not present at all. While the percentage of LGBTQ characters is the highest its been in the eight-year history of the report, none of the eight major studios received a “Good” grade. The grading system factors in the quality, quantity, and diversity of LGBTQ representation.
GLAAD found that of the 118 films released from major studios in 2019, 22 (18.6 percent) included characters that were lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ). This represents a slight increase from the previous year’s report. Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, United Artists Releasing, and Universal Pictures received “Insufficient” grades; Sony Pictures Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios received “Poor” grades; and STX Films received a “Failing” grade,...

The ReFrame coalition has awarded 26 feature films released in 2019 with its ReFrame Stamp, which recognizes the top 100-grossing gender-balanced narrative and animated features. The list, which grew from 20 total films that earned the stamp a year ago, includes Booksmart, Captain Marvel, Harriet, Hustlers and Oscar Best Picture nominee Little Women.
This reflects gains for women in the important roles of director, department heads, and women of color leads and co-leads. With an aim to increase the number of women of all backgrounds working in film, TV, and media, the ReFrame Stamp, which is showcased in end credits and appears on IMDb, serves as a mark of distinction for projects that have demonstrated success in gender-balanced hiring. Additional points are awarded to content that has women of color in key positions.

Despite its CGI canine star, this new adaptation of The Call of the Wild finds true humanity in Jack London’s classic story.

Dog-centric movies command a specific audience like period pieces and war films; it can be difficult for a viewer who is not a fan of the genre to crossover for a specific movie except in outstanding cases. Chris Sanders’ The Call of the Wild is not the be-all, end-all of its genre, nor does it feature an even real on screen dog for much of its running time. But after the last few years of cheesy fare like A Dog’s Purpose, A Dog’s Journey, and A Dog’s Way Home, this new adaptation is head of the pack thanks to its CGI St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix with slightly unsettlingly human eyes. It also doesn’t hurt he’s supported by a craggily yet endearing...

Harrison Ford’s “The Call of the Wild” opened with $1 million in Thursday night previews.
Stx’s supernatural horror sequel “Brahms: The Boy II,” meanwhile, earned $375,000 at 1,800 screens from Thursday previews.
The earnings for Disney-20th Century’s “The Call of the Wild” is in the same vicinity as “The Upside,” which took in $1.1 million from previews and wound up with a $20 million opening weekend last year. “The Call of the Wild” is expected to finish the fame with $10 million to $18 million at 3,752 venues in North America, leaving the canine adventure film far behind “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which has grossed $77 million domestically in its first six days.
Ford stars in the PG-rated adventure about a dog named Buck — a CGI-created Saint Bernard-Scotch Collie mix — in an adaptation of Jack London’s 1903 novel. Set during Alaska’s Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s, the film follows Buck, who’s stolen from...

Harrison Ford’s “The Call of the Wild,” the family adventure based on the classic Jack London novel, earned $1 million in box office previews on Thursday.
Ford stars in the film alongside a furry, but CGI, companion in the form of a dog named Buck. But though the film is the biggest new wide release of the weekend, it will likely fall short of another live-action and CGI hybrid family movie, “Sonic the Hedgehog,” heading strong into its second weekend. “The Call of the Wild” is also the first movie released under the new name 20th Century Studios, with Disney recently renaming the old Fox studio.
The studio is projecting an opening in the $15 million range for “The Call of the Wild.” Compare that to another adventure with a winter release, albeit with a real dog. “A Dog’s Way Home” from last January, debuted to $11.3 million after earning $535,000 in its previews.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog looks to keep things rolling this weekend as it faces incoming competition from 20th Century's The Call of the Wild and Stx's Brahms: The Boy II. Sonic will have no trouble holding on to the top spot following its strong start last weekend as it looks to top $110 million after just ten days in release.
Following a massive start last weekend, accompanied by solid critical reviews and audience response, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog is looking at a another weekend atop the box office. We're anticipating a dip around -48% or so for a $30 millilon three-day. Should that forecast hold look for the film to top $110 million by the end of the weekend, on its way to becoming the third highest grossing video game adaptation domestically after just ten days in release.

Some good news this weekend: The early 2020 small uptick in grosses continued, with total ticket sales totaling around $130 million. (The second weekend of 2019 saw $120 million.) And leading the charge was Sam Mendes’ innovative “1917.” At $36.5 million, it more than doubled #2 “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” for an easy #1 placement.
The three-day period saw four new and expanding wide studio releases, compared with two in 2019 — “The Upside” and “A Dog’s Way Home,” along with the independent “Replicas” which only roused $2.3 million. That means the biggest reason for the jump is more new titles rather than suggesting a major box-office resurrection.
The big question this year is whether original titles can continue to perform like “The Upside,” “Hustlers,” and “Knives Out.” “1917” is showing initial strength that should push it to those levels, or higher. But the other three new wide releases all look like they will fall short of $50 million domestic to some degree.

Jonah Hauer-King is far from being a poor, unfortunate soul.
The relative newcomer, 24, scored the role of Prince Eric in upcoming live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid opposite Halle Bailey‘s Ariel. Hauer-King will serve as the main love interest in the movie musical — a role former One Direction singer Harry Styles previously passed on.
As the undersea cast begins to fill out (Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem and Jacob Tremblay are all reportedly circling key roles in the film), Hauer-King’s casting marks a big-screen milestone for the actor, best known till now for his supporting work on TV.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, starring singer Halle Bailey as Ariel, will be directed by Rob Marshall.
The Little Mermaid is coming back to theaters, this time in live-action form, as part of Disney’s deluge of live-action movie remakes of its iconic animated classics. Of course, the move is hardly the biggest surprise in the world, with the year 2019 alone yielding "A-list" releases of Dumbo, The Lion King, and Aladdin, and with Mulan set arrive in March 2020, and 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella arriving in May 2021, giving its prolific corporate tentpole neighbors at Marvel a run for their money.
Halle Bailey will embrace life under the sea, and later on the surface, to star as Ariel. This is a major break for the singer/actress, who is part of the cast of Freeform’s Grown-ish and is one-half of the R&b act, Chloe X Halle.

The new year got off to a bit of a slow start with January 2019 delivering $812.4 million in calendar grosses, ranking as the 11th best January of all-time, -15.5% behind last year. Notable is the absence of a new Star Wars film carrying over from a December release, something the last three Januarys all took advantage of, and this year's crop of Oscar nominees didn't provide a late year release that could match the buzz generated from films such as American Sniper, The Revenant or Hidden Figures. Despite the month's overall performance, there were a few highlights among the month's new releases that might not carry large budgets or have delivered $100+ million in domestic box office revenue, but based on their small scale they more than helped out the bottom line for their respective distributors. "I wanted to chase the car, but I just didn't have the energy..." He's back!! Universal Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for the next doggie movie coming up this year titled A Dog's Journey, officially the sequel to A Dog's Purpose. Both of these films are based on the books written by W. Bruce Cameron, and are about a dog's soul as it travels between various dogs and families and owners over the years. We've already had one other dog movie this year - A Dog's Way Home - and the title of this one is a bit too similar, even though it's from the "original" dog love book series. A Dog's Journey once again features the voice of Josh Gad as the dog Bailey, and a human cast including Dennis Quaid, Marg Helgenberger, Kathryn Prescott, Betty Gilpin, Peggy Lipton, Luke Kirby, Gabrielle Rose, and Britt Robertson. This...

The film brings together stars Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and James McAvoy, and is set to open in 3,841 locations with the studio anticipating a $50 million opening over the film's first four days. If you've ever had a dog, then you know that owning a pet means having a new, incredibly loving family member - one that knows how to play fetch, come kiss up on you when you're feeling sad, and somehow steal all of your favorite socks . . . which, as a dog (and human) mom, is something that Bryce Dallas Howard knows all too well. She's now taken that love for dogs to the big screen, starring as the voice of a puppy named Bella in the new film A Dog's Way Home, in which we see Bella take off on a 400-mile journey to be reunited with her owner.
In celebration of the new film, we sat down with Howard for our new series I Kid You Not, where we bring together your favorite celebrity moms to chat about the relatable joys and struggles of being a parent while watching some...
