In an interview, the director mentioned that it's likely Elio and Oliver will meet each other again in Paris in the sequel.
In an interview with AwardsWatch, director Luca Guadagnino revealed he has asked frequent collaborator Dakota Johnson to be involved in the sequel and she eagerly agreed to be. It has been speculated she will play Oliver's wife.
It is likely the film will both be named and follow the story of the book "Find Me" that was released in October 2019, and is the sequel to the first book the film is based on. The scenes not filmed from end of the first book will also add to this story, this is confirmed from earlier interviews with the director.
Find Me's screenplay was written by André Aciman, the author of the book it's based on.
Armie Hammer likely will not reprise role as Oliver due to sexual assault allegations including a cannibalism fetish. It's unknown how much this will affect the final film as of 2021 via recasting or if Oliver will be written out as the project is still in development.
