Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. More than a week since CBS shocked the entertainment industry with news that it is currently developing the first daytime drama series since the launch of “Passions” nearly 25 years ago, and the network’s first new soap opera since the launch of “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 1987, George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS and chief content officer for news and sports at Paramount+, recently revealed how “The Gates” came to be and gave some insight on whether the show will be a 30-minute show or one-hour.
In a far-reaching interview with Vulture, Cheeks revealed that “The Gates” is real and that the show is being developed following conversations with Sheila Ducksworth, president of the CBS/NAACP Production Venture, which was established in 2020 to develop content for the CBS Television Network, as well as the ability to sell programming to third-party platforms across the media landscape with an emphasis...

BET+ is turning to Chris “Ludacris” Bridges for its next scripted foray.
The streaming service is developing a half-hour dramedy inspired by the life of the rapper-actor, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The streamer says the untitled DJ project is inspired by Ludacris’ “experience coming up in the competitive music scene in Atlanta as DJ Chris Lova Lova, the series follows the misadventures of a sharply drawn ensemble who are willing to do anything and everything to bolster ratings at their hip hop radio station.”
Noah Gardenswartz (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will write the script and exec produce the potential series, which is currently in the development stage. Ludacris is on board as an exec producer and will serve as music supervisor. Soon after the release of M3GAN back in January, it was announced that the team behind the film – Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster – were aiming to replicate M3GAN‘s January theatrical success by setting a January 2024 release date for their supernatural thriller Night Swim. The movie reached theatres at the start of this month – and didn’t manage to go over as well or get as much attention as M3GAN did. While M3GAN earned over $180 million during its theatrical run, Night Swim has only pulled in about $37 million at this point. Now the movie is heading to the small screen, as it’s getting a VOD and digital release this week, on January 23rd. If you want to watch the movie in the comfort of your own home tomorrow, it will set you back $29.99 on Amazon.

Your mileage may vary on Kevin Hart as a movie star, and on Netflix's big-budget original movies. Both have a somewhat shaky track record, creatively speaking -- Hart has had his fair share of misses, and things like "The Gray Man," "Heart of Stone," and "Red Notice" haven't exactly inspired tons of confidence that Netflix's would-be blockbusters have much to offer. But Hart and the streamer are trying to change all of that by joining forces for "Lift," a new heist film which, to its credit, appears to be trying to elevate (ha!) its premise by centering on a band of thieves who attempt to steal $500 million in gold out of a passenger plane flying at 40,000 feet.
That's a fun if ridiculous idea, but hey, I'm a fan of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, so far be it from me to cast the first stone. This film has a...

When first-time documentary director Leonard Manzella premieres his award-winning “Shoe Shine Caddie” at the Portobello Film Festival in London on September 16, it will represent a kind of return to the former actor’s roots in the international film scene.
A professional family therapist for the past 30 years in California, Manzella’s earlier career began when the native Angeleno left Los Angeles for Rome in 1968 “when everything was burning.” In his early 20s and armed with “no contacts and about $50 bucks in my pocket,” a fortuitous introduction to American actor Brett Halsey got Manzella into movies, first as an extra and eventually as a leading man.
Halsey, who landed in Rome in the ‘60s and worked steadily in Euro crime thrillers and in the burgeoning spaghetti western scene, often toiled under the moniker Montgomery Ford and Leonard Manzella became famous as Leonard Mann.

Tiffany Haddish has a bone to pick over her first starring film role, which she says picked up steam on cable TV and streaming as “Girls Trip” became a hit in the summer of 2017.
Haddish, in an interview with The Associated Press, said she wasn’t properly compensated after the film was “all over” BET, VH1 and other networks.
“Then the streaming is everywhere, that movie,” Haddish said in video you can watch above. “And I don’t get a dime.”
Haddish, 43, didn’t name the film but said she was homeless as it was being shot.
“They were supposed to pay me $1,200 to do the movie,” Haddish said. “I wasn’t in a union. It was a nonunion film so there’s nothing I could do about it. They never paid me a dime. The producers gave me 10 DVDs and said, ‘Sell those. Good luck.'”

Back in January, it was announced that M3GAN collaborators Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster are aiming to replicate the January theatrical success they had with that movie by setting a January 2024 release date for their supernatural thriller Night Swim. At the time, it was said that Night Swim would reach theatres on January 19th. But now Deadline reports that the release date has been moved forward two weeks, to January 5th. Genre fans will be able to check out Night Swim on the first weekend of the year.
And then in January 2025, Universal, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster will be bringing us M3GAN 2.0.
Bryce McGuire is writing and directing Night Swim, which is based on a short film he made with Rod Blackhurst back in 2014. The feature version of the story is built around the hidden source of terror found in an iconic backyard swimming pool.

With his family away, a devoted stay-at-home dad enjoys his first me time in years by joining his hard-partying old friend on a wild birthday adventure.
Do we really need yet another Kevin Hart comedy this year? To be completely honest with you, it’s arguable that “Kevin Hart comedy” is actually its own genre of film. The difference between that and a normal comedy? A normal comedy is actually funny and has a strong script and entertaining characters that make you smile and put you in a good mood.
Hart’s films are almost always devoid of any of these qualities, making it virtually impossible to fall head over heels for one of his comedies. We were already tortured to one of his films this year in the form of The Man From Toronto...

Plot: When a stay-at-home dad finds himself with some “me time” for the first time in years while his wife and kids are away, he reconnects with his former best friend for a wild weekend that nearly upends his life.
Review: Kevin Hart is anything if not consistent. Over the course of his big screen career, Hart has consistently played the same character time and again: the lovable straight man who invariably loses his cool and hilarious results follow. From Night School and Central Intelligence to Jumanji and Ride Along, Hart has never come close to matching the energy of his stand-up comedy shows for the entirety of a feature film. While he has tried his hand at more dramatic fare like Fatherhood, True Story, and The Upside or action roles like Die Hart and The Man From Toronto, Hart consistently returns to comedies. His latest partners him with Mark Wahlberg...
