“Jaws” in 1975 is remembered as the movie that birthed the summer global blockbuster; its many children include “Star Wars,” Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Top Gun,” “Ghostbusters,” “Ghost,” “Twister,” “The Lion King,” “Independence Day,” “Speed,” and “Men in Black.” Today, that bloodline is threatened with extinction.
On the surface, that seems ridiculous — summer box office is still defined by blockbusters — but today that means sequels. It’s become exceedingly rare for studios to invest over $100 million in a summer movie with an original screenplay that’s not already part of a franchise. That’s what makes Paramount Pictures’ $110 million “If” such an outlier.
Still, being that exception also hands writer-director John Krasinski a double-edged sword. Those original blockbusters — all released between 1975-1999 — ended up with domestic gross totals, in 2024 ticket price terms, of over $400 million. Consensus on opening weekend for “If” has been around $40 million,...

Family films can be a big money maker if the movie is an all-quadrant pleaser. John Krasinski has stated that he wanted his new movie, If, to bring audiences back to the Amblin-like days of wonder when filmmakers like Steven Spielberg unlocked people’s imaginations. The box office predictions from our own Chris Bumbray had placed the movie to only open at $30 million. Family audiences are likely to be split between this and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which should be a strong second with around $28 million. Although, his A Quiet Place prequel will likely make a lot more money at the box office this summer.
As the weekend starts, Deadline has reported that the Thursday night preview figures that If imagined would ultimately total at $1.75 million from screenings that started at 4 Pm. It is noted, however, that original, live-action PG-rated family films are more rare nowadays and...

Plot: A young girl (Cailey Fleming) going through a difficult life experience discovers that she can see a whole world of IFs (imaginary friends) who’ve been forgotten by their childhood friends as they grew older. Now, with the help of their mysterious adult named Cal (Ryan Reynolds), she seeks to unite these IFs with new children.
Review: One cannot fault writer-director-star John Krasinski for a lack of ambition. He’s parlayed the success of his A Quiet Place franchise into this big-budget family film, which seems to aspire to be a live-action Pixar flick. However, in attempting to appeal to both children and adults, he’s made a movie targeting too vague an audience. If is too childish for adults, but it is also likely too serious and dramatic to keep kids entertained.
As such, If could be categorized as an interesting failure. Like Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland, which also seemed inspired by Pixar,...

Writer/director John Krasinski’s new film, If, explores the worlds of childhood, adulthood, and the imaginations that connect the two. Unfortunately, a heavier-than-expected narrative may turn off some of what proves to be one of the rare family films that explores what it means to be a family and how to keep one together.
When Bea (Cailey Fleming) discovers that she can see other people’s imaginary friends (or IFs), she is enlisted as an agent designated with reconnecting forgotten IFs with their real kids. Cal (Ryan Reynolds), a mysterious resident in one of the rooms in the building that Bea’s grandmother (Fiona Shaw) lives in, takes her on as his “sort of” apprentice in the If reuniting business. From there it becomes apparent that Bea has a knack for this sort of thing and the pair attempt to reunite as many grown-ups with their forgotten IFs as possible.

If you had told me back in 2009 or so that one day the guy who played Jim on “The Office” was going to helm one of the most successful horror movie franchises of the 21st century, I would have first been very impressed to learn that time travel was real, then immediately questioned what sort of future you came from where this was a possibility. And yet, in 2018, John Krasinski did exactly that, joining forces with the creative duo of Bryan Woods and Scott Beck to deliver, “A Quiet Place.” Set in a world where mysterious creatures hunt

Oooh, this looks creepy.
"Never Let Go" is a new horror film from Alexandre Aja, director of the pretty good remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" and the excellent killer alligator movie "Crawl." With his new feature, Aja seems to be channeling "A Quiet Place" crossed with a bit of the supernatural, resulting in this effective trailer. In "Never Let Go," Halle Berry plays a mother who is hiding out in the woods with her twin sons. According to Berry's character, these are post-apocalyptic times. Berry tells her sons that they'll be safe as long as they tether themselves to the secluded cabin where they're hiding out. But what's really going on here? And what's lurking out in the woods? I don't know. All I know is that the dog that shows up in the trailer better make it out alive.

Originally announced last year under the title Mother Land, the next film from director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Crawl) is now titled Never Let Go, and Lionsgate has released the official trailer this morning. Watch it below.
Never Let Go arrives in theaters on September 27, 2024. The premise for this one looks to be similar to films including A Quiet Place and Bird Box, centered on a small family unit’s struggle to survive within a world gone to hell. There’s a whole lot of snake-like imagery in this first look trailer – jump to 1:44 for a blink-and-miss-it little tease… or check out our screen-grab below – but the threat outside their door is still very much a mystery at this point in time.
All we know is… one touch is all it takes…
Academy Award winner Halle Berry is leading the film’s cast.

People often criticize Hollywood for their reliance on IP, and this weekend, director John Krasinski, who successfully launched his own franchise with A Quiet Place, hopes to buck the trend by releasing his latest, If, a big-budget family film starring Ryan Reynolds. The movie, whose title stands for “Imaginary Friend” was also written by Krasinski and boasts a who’s who of actors voicing the titular characters, including his former The Office co-star Steve Carell, wife Emily Blunt, and ultra-famous colleagues like George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Jon Stewart, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Matt Damon, and many more.
Given all that star power, the film seems likely to come in first at the box office this weekend, but the reviews (so far) have been largely unkind. The film wasn’t screened in many major markets (such as my own), so some of us will be hitting early screenings tomorrow night to file our reviews.

Things have begun to pick up at the summer box office, and three new wide releases will try to keep things rolling along. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big movie this weekend is the latest from director John Krasinski, once again teaming with Paramount Pictures for his family film “If,” starring Ryan Reynolds. “If” stands for “Imaginary Friends” – not to be confused with the recent horror movie “Imaginary” – although this is a family-friendly version of the same general concept, about a little girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) who begins working with Reynold’s character to help pair IFs who have been abandoned by their childhood friends with new kids.
Following his run on “The Office” and directing a couple of indies, Krasinski directed “A Quiet Place” for Paramount in 2018, which opened with $50.2 million and went onto gross $188 million domestic and $334 million globally, based on a $17 million budget.

Taking a break from terrorising the masses with his brilliant sci/horror franchise A Quiet Place – a prequel to the first two movies is currently in the works with Pig director Michael Sarnoski at the helm – John Krasinski is back again in front and behind the camera in If, the new live action kids movie from Paramount. And if numbers scored by early previews are anything to go by, the film looks to already be one of the biggest winners in this summer’s box office wars.
If (short for Imaginary Friend) is also written and produced by Krasinski. The film stars Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, Krasinski and legendary Irish film and stage actor Fiona Shaw, alongside the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. and Steve Carell.
The film follows Bea (Fleming), a 12 year old girl who is still finding hard it to come to terms with the death of her mother 4 years earlier.

The combination of animation and live-action always leaves me somewhat apprehensive about going into any film that ventures into this hybrid method of storytelling. From the ease with which it generates a sensation akin to the uncanny valley to the potential lack of tonal control, movies like If will always be a massive risk that, at worst, could spoil an otherwise wonderful experience. Nevertheless, the simple fact that John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) is at the helm as both writer and director gave me some security and confidence.
If‘s premise is simple yet interesting. Bea (Cailey Fleming) is a girl who finds herself capable of seeing imaginary friends abandoned by other children. In a journey filled with important life lessons, Bea embarks on a magical adventure to reunite the IFs — get it? — with the now-adult people whom they helped during their respective childhoods.

When John Krasinski stepped behind the camera for his 2018 smash hit horror feature “A Quiet Place,” he drew inspiration from an unlikely place: “This movie was for my kids,” he told IndieWire in April 2018. Well, not so much for them, but about them, and the lengths parents will go in order to protect their nearest and dearest. Krasinski and co-star and wife Emily Blunt’s kiddos were quite young at the time, and not at all the target audience for the nearly wordless alien invasion thriller. Perhaps then, when Krasinski set about writing his first post-“A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place Part II” film, the PG outing “If,” the filmmaker wanted to finally make something his kids could actually watch.
That’s a fine enough place to start, and a more tender reading of Krasinski’s fifth directorial feature, which takes an interesting enough idea — what if imaginary friends were real?...

In the early scenes of his new fantasy film geared to families, John Krasinski is seen as a 12-year-old girl’s father who’s in the hospital preparing for what seems to be life-threatening heart surgery. To keep up his daughter’s spirits, he delivers elaborate jokes and comedy routines, leading her to complain that he needn’t bother, that she’s not a child anymore. In other words, she thinks he’s trying too hard, which is something you could also say about If.
There’s no denying the ambition and thoughtfulness on display in this effort written and directed by Krasinski, which marks a notable stylistic turn from his smash hit horror films A Quiet Place and its sequel. If, whose title means “Imaginary Friends,” aims for obvious laughs with its multitude of amusing computer-animated characters featuring all sorts of incarnations from teddy bears to melting marshmallows. John Krasinski swaps horror for family adventure with his latest directorial effort. Here’s our If review.
2018’s A Quiet Place wasn’t the first film John Krasinski, best known back then as Jim in the US version of The Office, directed, but it was the one that made him a director to watch. A Quiet Place and its 2020 sequel were both tense, thrilling horror flicks which proved Krasinski was adept at both storytelling and mastering the technical side of filmmaking.
If, at first, seems to diverge from Krasinski’s previous work. It’s a big, boisterous family film with CGI creatures and Ryan Reynolds. The trailers felt miles away from the taut, precise filmmaking seen in Krasinski’s previous work as a director. What the trailers didn’t quite sell was just quite heartfelt and genuine If is.

John Krasinski proudly makes movies for and about the whole family. Maybe his vastly successful “A Quiet Place” franchise, with all its screechy monsters, is too much for youngsters to handle. But there’s still an undeniable, innocent loveliness to those movies, with warm moments that lean closely into the bonds of an adoring family that only grow stronger in the face of danger and despair.
So it’s perhaps no surprise that Krasinski’s latest sets its sights on a tale that this time is genuinely for kids, and not just their parents. There are no bloodthirsty brutes in the live action-animation hybrid “If,” a sweetly old-fashioned yet messily conjured children’s tale that sadly falls short of its thematic ambitions. Instead, it has oddly endearing creatures that represent a child’s wild imagination, overeager to show up and save the day for the people who envisioned them once upon a time,...

John Krasinski went from playing Jim in The Office to becoming one of the most successful actor-writer-director of this generation. After finding success with A Quiet Place franchise, which he wrote and directed himself, now Krasinski is back with the movie If. If or Imaginary Friend, is the latest movie from his bag of brilliance, which, again, the 44-year-old wrote and directed himself.

The movie has all the who’s who from the industry, starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Krasinski himself, alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, and so many others. Cailey Fleming is at the center of the story, who goes on a magical adventure to reconnect people with their imaginary friend who they have lost on their way. The movie recently released its final trailer before premier, and it is a crossover we did not know we needed.

John Krasinski is an outstanding actor and a fantastic director. In 2009, he made his directorial debut with Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. After scaring everyone with his work, the actor-director now wants to make us nostalgic with If, aka Imaginary Friends.

After bringing two of the most acclaimed thrillers – A Quiet Place films to the big screen, John Krasinski took a step back from the director’s chair for his upcoming prequel film, A Quiet Place: Day One. Krasinski handed over the responsibility to Michael Sarnoski, who is now set to helm the iconic horror franchise prequel set to release on June 28.

The summer movie season is in need of a hero. Can the director of "A Quiet Place" and the star of "Deadpool" come together to be those heroes? That's the question we're faced with the release of Paramount Pictures' "If," a new, original, family-friendly picture that promises a magical blend of CGI and live-action involving lots of imaginary friends. So, can Krasinski pivot from mid-budget horror to big-budget family films while maintaining the same level of success?
"If" is currently eyeing an opening in the $40 million range when it opens on May 17, per The Hollywood Reporter. Early tracking had the movie falling between $38 and $42 million, though some believe it can go as high as $50 million. That would be an unqualified win for an original movie of any kind right now. That is assuming that the film does, indeed, fall in line with those early expectations. For what it's worth, Box...

“Shelter In Place. Wait Further Instructions” Watch The Scary New Trailer For A Quiet Place: Day One
“It’s the end of days. No more people.” It’s time once again to stay totally silent and totally still in the cinema when you go to see A Quiet Place: Day One. Just as audiences did in 2018 when director John Krasinski unleashed his horror film A Quiet Place on an unsuspecting public, everyone in the theater went dead quiet so as to not give away the Abbott family’s hiding places.
A Quiet Place: Part II showed the aftermath of the deadly events at home and the new terrors the family faced in the outside world. The sequel starred Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Djimon Hounsou and John Krasinski. From the opening moments of the film, the family was on the run, beyond any semblance of security and searching for refuge in a town gone mad with fear. In a time when empathy and connection...

Paramount Pictures has debuted the brand new trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One, offering a chilling new look at the upcoming prequel that will take us back to the beginning of the saga and show us what happened the day the world went quiet.
Further plot details are currently under wraps, but the trailer does seem to promise one of this summer's most enjoyable horror rides and should add some much needed backstory to the growing series, which launched in 2018 with the John Krasinski-directed blockbuster A Quiet Place and continued that story with 2021's A Quiet Place Part II.
While the second installment revealed some of what happened on Day One, showcasing how the Abbott family managed to survive the meteor crash and subsequent alien invasion, the prequel will follow an entirely new batch of characters as they do their best to make it out of New York alive.

Paramount Pictures is all in on “A Quiet Place” as one of their continuing franchises, as the first two movies focused on the Abbott family’s harrowing survival (thanks to sign language and their deaf daughter preparing them for silent communication) after aliens have wiped out a bunch of the human population as they’re attracted to sound and kill anyone that makes too much noise by making their presence aware to the deadly threat.

Before the Abbott family storyline continues in a third installment of the franchise, spinoff prequel A Quiet Place: Day One will be making its way into theaters on June 28, 2024.
We’ll discover why our world went quiet in A Quiet Place: Day One, which will expand the universe of John Krasinski’s hit horror franchise. Watch the brand new trailer below.
Horror franchises spicing up their formula with trips to New York City is of course nothing new, with Day One following in the wake of films like Jason Takes Manhattan, Scream VI and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. If you had told me back in 2009 or so that one day the guy who played Jim on "The Office" was going to helm one of the most successful horror movie franchises of the 21st century, I would have first been very impressed to learn that time travel was real, then immediately questioned what sort of future you came from where this was a possibility. And yet, in 2018, John Krasinski did exactly that, joining forces with the creative duo of Bryan Woods and Scott Beck to deliver, "A Quiet Place."
Set in a world where mysterious creatures hunt by sound, forcing what's left of humanity to go silent, "A Quiet Place" is centered on a family fighting for survival. The film was a massive success at the box office, inspiring the sequel film "A Quiet Place Part II," which saw the family moving on without their father after he was killed in the previous film,...

Shhh. Do you hear that? That’s the sound of the new teaser for A Quiet Place: Day One. While series creator John Krasinski has opted to do a much more family-friendly fare with the Ryan Reynolds movie If, A Quiet Place has been handed off to some pretty capable hands as Michael Sarnoski steps up to sit in the director’s seat. The new trailer will be dropping sometime tomorrow. However, the official Instagram account for the film and the film’s studio, Paramount, couldn’t wait to tease audiences with this atmospheric, Asmr-esque video which should give you the environment of the invasion as you listen to it with headphones on.

Normally, the summer movie season would kick off with a Marvel superhero movie, but this May, we’re doing things a little differently. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This year and for the first time since the pandemic, Marvel isn’t launching the month of May. Instead, Universal jumped on the date for its new action comedy “The Fall Guy,” loosely based on the popular ’80s series starring Lee Majors. Two of the Oscar-nominated stars from last year’s blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenom unite for this new action rom-com from filmmaker David Leitch (“Bullet Train”). Those stars, of course, are Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who were nominated for Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s Best Picture-winning “Oppenheimer,” respectively, two of the biggest movies of 2023. “The Fall Guy” premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival and even played at the annual exhibitors’ convention, CinemaCon,...

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are ready to leap into action later this week when The Fall Guy races into theaters. As the blistery winter winds blow away and the summer heat increases in certain parts of the world, the duo’s new action-packed homage to stunt performers arrives to take the box office (and your wallet) by storm! Analysts expect The Fall Guy to reach $30M+ in its opening gambit, with some studio execs saying the film could reach $35-40 million.
While a box office opening in the 30s would be solid for an original action film, The Fall Guy cost a reported $130 million to produce. If you like the film, be sure to sing its praises from the rafters. On Saturday, WeAreMovieGeeks.com got a sneak peek at the Fall Guy Stuntacular at Universal Studios Hollywood. Based on the upcoming reboot of the 80’s classic TV series, The Fall Guy Stuntacular is a limited running show at the popular movie theme park. Presented just before the Water World stunt show at Universal, this new show features many of the big stunts from the movie. And as if that wasn’t enough, Ryan Gosling, star of the new film was on hand to treat the invited audience to the first look at the stunts and the stunt men and women who make it all possible. Gosling called the film, “a love letter to the stunt community” that has been overshadowed for years. Laughs were also abound, as Gosling doubled down on his likeability and comic chops, joking with the crowd and director of the film David Leitch who was also in attendance.

“Satan is his father and his name is Adrian!” shouts the coven leader Roman Castevet at the end of 1968’s. Rosemary’s Baby. “He shall overthrow the mighty and lay waste their temples. He shall redeem the despised and wreak vengeance in the name of the burned and the tortured.”
Even when making allowances for Roman’s (Sidney Blackmer) understandable delight at seeing his plan come to fruition, that’s a lot of expectation to put on a newborn, no matter who his father might be. Neither the 1976 TV movie Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, in which Patty Duke subs in for Mia Farrow, nor original author Ira Levin’s follow-up book Son of Rosemary (1997) manages to deliver what Roman promised.
But for the next film branching out of Rosemary’s Baby,...
