The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just about the perfect cast for each and every comic book character they have brought to life. Yet that does not mean that the ‘perfect actors’ would want to continue playing their roles forever (clue Dave Bautista as Drax) and for someone like Brie Larson, who delivered Marvel’s first true bomb in years, the actress must certainly be looking to move outside the realms of the MCU.
Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in the MCU
Even though the actress has been on numerous occasions described as the perfect Captain Marvel, her recent ambiguous answers related to her future with Marvel seem to hint she might have already said goodbye to her fan-favorite role.

People tend to expect a lot out of a star-studded cast like this, and the fact is that taking Henry Cavill, Ben Kingsley, Stanley Tucci, Alexandra Daddario, Nathan Fillion, and several other well-known individuals and placing them in a movie that feels like an action movie that should, by all means, rock the house. But while Night Hunter is kind of a generic title, the movie is a bit generic as well, though it does lean into the ‘interesting’ column just enough that it’s no surprise why folks would end up watching it. These days it does feel as though

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Agnieszka Holland's Spoor, which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from September 11 – October 10, 2019 in Mubi's Luminaries series.Near the end of Spoor, Agnieszka Holland’s 2017 Silver Bear-winning feature, a jittery woman recalls a local legend that used to frighten her as a child. The story of the Night Hunter, a spirit in pursuit of evil people, becomes a parable for the entire film as a whole folkloric act of justice, when members of the small Polish town’s hunting party disappear under mysterious circumstances. Melding its whodunit narrative with uncanny suspects, the film takes a critical stance on the human-animal relationship. Through an unsettling portrayal of hunting rituals intertwined with murder mystery, Spoor questions pre-supposed hierarchical structures, be it that of man over woman, or of human over animal. Despite being drawn up...

It’s rare that you see a film with as stacked an ensemble as Ben Kingsley, Henry Cavill, Stanley Tucci, Alexandra Daddario, and more disappear by the wayside, but the dark crime thriller Nomis, aka Night Hunter as it’s being released domestically, could be in danger of doing just that. "He rigged the basement!" A full international trailer has debuted for a dark new crime thriller titled Night Hunter, also known as just Nomis for the international release. The film is about a detective and his police force who get "caught up in a dangerous scheme involving a recently arrested, troubled man who's linked to years of female abductions and murders." Although it seems to be a bit more complex than just that, with some twists and turns. This features quite an impressive ensemble: Ben Kingsley, Alexandra Daddario, Henry Cavill, Minka Kelly, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion, Sara Thompson, Eliana Jones, Emma Tremblay, Brendan Fletcher, and Mpho Koaho. This looks a lot like The Snowman or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, about troubled men who abuse women, and the people caught up in trying to stop them. Here's the new international trailer (+ poster) for David Raymond's Night Hunter, direct from...

After 18 years under Film Independent, the Los Angeles Film Festival is no more.
Film Independent announced Wednesday that it was ending the festival — which had been moved this year from June to September — and replace it with year-round events aimed at building community and broadening its support of visual storytellers. Josh Welsh, president of the nonprofit, admitted that the event had “struggled to thrive.”
“We took a hard look at the healthy growth of Film Independent’s year-round programs and events over the past six years: the Spirit Awards, our film series curated by Elvis Mitchell, membership, labs, workshops, filmmaker grants and international programs,” said Mary Sweeney, chair of the Film Independent board of directors. “In the end, we concluded that the organization should explore a more nimble, sustainable form of exhibiting and celebrating independent film artists year round.”

Sexual assault may be a point of intense, eye-opening conversation in the country right now, but it’s also still the bread and butter of exploitative junk like “Nomis,” writer-director David Raymond’s debut feature starring Henry Cavill as a brooding Minnesota-by-way-of-the-uk cop on the hunt for a powerful, elusive, serial kidnapper-rapist-murderer.
Jittery and nonsensical, it juggles its influences — “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Seven,” television procedurals — with oily hands and a distracted focus.
Opening with a nervy nighttime chase through snowy woods in which a crying, barely-clad young woman is running from something hellish, and followed by a domestic exchange in which Cavill’s divorced dad lawman schools his online-addicted 13-year-old daughter in how to tell who might be a social-media-finessing creep (no friends in the photos), the movie primes us to believe “Nomis” might be an engaged thriller for our distressed but increasingly awakened times.

Eight years ago, the La Film Festival hosted June premieres in downtown Los Angeles for a pair of decidedly high-profile movies — “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Despicable Me.”
The festival’s 24th edition, which launches Thursday night, will be very different. Film Independent moved the festival from downtown two years ago to the Arclight venues. Tentpoles are long gone. And it’s moved out of summer and into awards season.
It’s not easy for large-scale, general interest film festivals to make an impact in such a sprawling city, where many people are too busy making movies to watch movies. And some filmgoers focus their attention on the dozens of local niche festivals catering to every interest from horror to French films, with Lgbt-focused Outfest claiming to draw the highest paid attendance of any Los Angeles festival.

The Los Angeles Film Festival will close with the world premiere of first-time writer/director David Raymond’s psychological thriller Nomis, which will screen on Sept. 28 at the Arclight Hollywood Cinerama Dome.
The film focuses on a police trap for online predator Simon Stulls. They soon realize that the extent of his crimes go far beyond that of his own psychological trauma. Nothing quite makes sense – that is, until people involved in the case on both sides of the law start getting murdered. Nomis stars Henry Cavill, Sir Ben Kingsley, Nathan Fillion, Minka Kelly, Alexandra Daddario and Stanley Tucci.

Exclusive: Fortitude International to launch sales in Cannes.
Fortitude International will introduce international buyers in Cannes to The Medusa starring Jesse Eisenberg, Pierce Brosnan and Vanessa Redgrave.
Peter Webber will direct his second film based on a renowned work of art after 2003’s Girl With A Pearl Earring, named after the painting by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.
The Medusa stars Eisenberg as Theodore Gericault, the early 19th century pioneer of the French Romantic movement whose masterpiece The Raft Of The Medusa was inspired by the sinking of a French frigate.
Survivors of the wreck spoke of incompetence and cannibalism and the painting stirred anti-royalist sentiment at the time of King Louis Xviii’s rule.
Brosnan will portray Gericault’s uncle Caruel, the artist’s nemesis who is hell-bent on ruining him, while Redgrave plays the painter’s anti-royalist innkeeper.
Sophia Al-Maria adapted the screenplay from Jonathan Miles’s book The Wreck Of The Medusa.

As if the cast of David Raymond’s psychological thriller Nomis wasn’t enviable enough, The Hollywood Reporter brings word today of some new recruits.
With Henry Cavill (Sand Castle), Ben Kingsley and Baywatch star Alexandra Daddario already locked in, THR has confirmed that Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion and Minka Kelly have all climbed on board alongside fellow newcomers Brendan Fletcher and Mpho Koaho. Little is currently known about how each of their respective characters factor into the storyline, but we understand David Raymond’s genre movie centers on “an American police force that traps an online predator, only to realize the depth of his crimes goes far beyond anything anticipated.” The Zodiac Killer for a digital age? Color us intrigued.
