There's less than a month to go until Despicable Me 4 arrives in theaters, and Illumination has released a new promo which takes a shot of Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Warner Bros.' tax write-offs, and the MCU.
The pro wrestler and actor vowed to change the "hierarchy of power" in the DC Extended Universe with the 2022 movie, only for it to flop at the box office and bomb with critics and fans alike. From there, Johnson's plans to take over the franchise failed and he was promptly ousted when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.
As for the 100-year slate of "Mega Minions" movies, it's a tongue-in-cheek dig at Marvel Studios and its habit of revealing slates of movies and TV shows years before they're released.
It's all meant in good fun, though we're sure Johnson doesn't appreciate being made fun of in this way.

When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

The Despicable Me movies always do very well at the box office (even if the reviews haven't remained quite as positive), so it came as no surprise that a fourth instalment in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's animated franchise was on the way, and a new trailer and poster have now been released.
Though Gru will appear, the Minions have really become the main focus of these movies, and there's plenty of fun to be had with the little yellow fellas in this latest teaser, which sees several "volunteers" transformed into super-powered Mega-Minions.
One gains stretchy abilities like Mr. Fantastic, another is a clear not to The Thing, and there's also a Minion with Cyclops-like optic blasts.
Check out the new trailer and poster below, and let us know if you plan on catching this one on the big screen.

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.
This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.
Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.
Mexico opened to $2.5M at No.

When Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves McConaughey step in front of the cameras, it’s always for a very good reason. What cause is better than bringing awareness and raising support for Matthew’s charitable project, Mack, Jack & McConaughey? The annual two-day joint fundraising effort took place in Austin, Texas. Matthew stepped out with his wife of 14 years and their three children, who look much more grown-up than the last time we saw them.

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.
In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.
Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph is making moves after her Oscar win.
The actress is in talks to join a musical in development at Universal from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams that has Kelvin Harrison Jr. attached to star, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The untitled coming-of-age project is said to be inspired by Williams’ formative years growing up in Virginia Beach in the 1970s.
Gondry is set to direct from a screenplay by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson. Williams, Mimi Valdés and Gil Netter will serve as producers.
Randolph won the best supporting actress Oscar earlier this month for her role as Mary Lamb in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, with other recent credits including Rustin and HBO’s The Idol. Additionally, she is set to star in the movie Shadow Force alongside Kerry Washington, and she filmed Bride Hard with Rebel Wilson last year.

The international box office was generally muted this weekend, save for in China which ushered in the Year of the Dragon on Saturday, and with it the lucrative Chinese New Year moviegoing period. According to early figures from Maoyan, the first two days of Spring Festival 2024 amassed Rmb 2.44B ($339M), just a touch below the comparable days in 2023.
Although Maoyan’s Pegasus 2 was tops on Saturday, the first day of the holiday, ultimately it was the Jia Ling Cfg/Alibaba inspirational film Yolo that won the weekend with an estimated Rmb 804M ($112M/comScore has it slightly lower at $110.4M) across the two-day stretch. In a report analyzing TV viewership in the U.S. throughout 2023, Nielsen found that “Suits” beat a record previously held by “The Office” for number of minutes watched in a single year.
The legal drama racked up 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, putting it just ahead of the 57.1 billion minutes of viewership accumulated by “The Office” in 2020. When comparing total time watched, though, projects with more episodes and/or longer episodes stand at an obvious advantage. The entirety of “Suits” runs for about 83 hours, which would mean it had an easier time reaching that 57 billion-minute mark than “The Office” did with about 73 hours of content.
Still, both the old record and the new one speak to Netflix’s ubiquity in the streaming landscape. “The Office” aired its final episode on NBC in 2013 but continued to reach a huge audience until it was removed from Netflix at the start of 2021 and...

Ted Lasso went out on a high note at Apple TV+.
According to Nielsen, the series was the most-watched streaming original last year, despite the fact that Apple TV+ has the fewest subscribers among the streamers that saw their content ranked in Nielsen’s streaming Top 10.
Apple’s small footprint didn’t keep the Jason Sudeikis-fronted series from putting up 16.9B minutes across all 24 episodes in 2023. That’s 2.5B more than second place, which went to Netflix’s The Night Agent. In fact, Netflix claimed most of the ten most-streamed originals last year, only giving away two more spots — one to Prime Video for Jack Ryan and another to Disney+ for The Mandalorian.
Ted Lasso snuck to No. 1 with consistently strong, though not eye-catching weekly totals, only ever surpassing 1B minutes once, after the Season 3 finale debuted.

Apple Original Films is in talks to pick up a package for the dramatic thriller The Lost Bus that has star Matthew McConaughey and director Paul Greengrass circling.
Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown) wrote the script for The Lost Bus based on Lizzie Johnson’s 2021 fact-based book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire that takes place amid California’s Camp Fire in 2018, which became the deadliest blaze in the state’s history. Pharrell Williams has come a long way from producing music as part of the Neptunes and as part of the rap/rock band N.E.R.D. Williams went on to do some of the most catchy, ear-wormy pop hits that radio and television would play ad nauseam. Pharrell would also break through into movies as he composed music for such films as the Despicable Me movies, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Hidden Figures. Additionally, his pop hits would be all over countless trailers and be featured in movies like Trolls Band Together and Sing 2.
Recently, Pharrell took to his Instagram to announce that his life story will be told in Lego form in a film from Focus Features, titled Piece by Piece. The film is due to hit theaters on October 11. Cher didn’t release an album of Christmas songs until this year. Despite this, she performed vocals on the best Christmas song of the rock ‘n’ roll era. She revealed what it was like to revisit that career milestone.
Cher said her new album of Christmas songs doesn’t have ‘Christmas Christmas songs’
2023 saw the release of Cher’s first Christmas album, which is simply titled Christmas. During a 2023 interview with Billboard, the “I Got You Babe” singer took pride in the album. “They’re not ‘Christmas Christmas’ songs, Ok, they’re just great songs,” Cher said. “And I never say that because I almost never like what I do. But I mean people love it and I’m happy.”
It makes perfect sense that Cher would record Christmas songs, as she sang backup on Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” That classic track became a standard, inspiring renditions by Mariah Carey,...

“Kung Fu Panda 4” kicked off with a mighty hi-yah! on Wednesday, as the trailer for the animated comedy racked up more than 142 million views across channels.
TikTok was a major contributor to the karate-chopping trailer’s terrific debut, which outperformed comparable Universal titles “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Minions 2,” “Sing 2” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” according to the studio.
“Kung Fu Panda 4” trailer hype falls near other successful major-studio movies in recent months, including “Inside Out 2” — which marked the biggest animated trailer launch in Disney history with 157 million views (78 million of which came from TikTok) — and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which earned a combined 100 million views for Disney and 20th Studios during the film’s marketing launch period.
The “Kung Fu Panda 4” trailer, which featured the return of Jack Black’s beloved panda Po, also rocketed to the top of YouTube’s trending page.

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

You know the drill. Every streaming service takes certain movies and TV shows off their platform each month as new titles join their libraries. It can be a bit infuriating to realize the show you've putting off watching for months is now about to become unavailable, but it also gives you the best excuse to finally watch it — a ticking clock.
With the holidays approaching, many of us will be stuck indoors with family members desperately looking for a distraction from the awful political talk. What better way to stop the awkward conversation than by suggesting a fantastic movie or TV show before it leaves Netflix? Sure, you can watch a Christmas classic or even a spirited holiday horror movie. But that's predictable and dull. A much better idea is to spend the holidays watching uncle Sir Ridley Scott tell you a story of honor, revenge, and gladiatorial glory. Or...

If you somehow missed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” when it was in theaters last spring, and then decided to not sample it when the Illumination toon arrived on the various post-theatrical windows over the last several months, you’ll get the chance to watch it on Netflix in just a few weeks.
The Universal release, which earned $1.36 billion at the worldwide box office to rank behind only “Barbie” as 2023’s second-biggest earner, will debut on the streaming platform Dec. 3.
Netflix has had a pay TV window with Illumination films for the last several years, in what has amounted to a mutually lucrative partnership. In yet another example of how theatrical releases often perform better on streaming services compared to streaming originals, “Sing 2” was the third-most streamed film via its Netflix availability throughout 2022.
This was after the Illumination sequel earned $405 million worldwide in late 2021/early 2022 and after a successful...

We're still waiting on a third proper entry in the "Kingsman" series (which very well may still happen), but even without the return of Taron Egerton as Eggsy, the franchise may live on in a pretty unexpected way. It was recently revealed by director Matthew Vaughn that a script for a sequel to 2021's "The King's Man," which was a prequel set during World War I, has been written. It would fulfill the promise of the first movie's wild post-credits scene and give us a "Kingsman" movie featuring Adolf Hitler as the villain.
But will it happen? Should it happen? Many questions linger at the thought of this movie becoming a reality.
"The next one is about the rise of Hitler, and how Hitler did come to power and basically was supported by the English aristocracy," Vaughn told Collider recently. The filmmaker, who also directed both "Kingsman: The Secret Service" and "Kingsman: The Golden Circle,...

I hope you’re sitting down for this one: my daughters, 3 and 6, are Disney fans. Perhaps you’ve read. Grandmas aside, Disney+ is a go-to babysitter, one without peer in the streaming game. I guess what I’m saying is, Bob Iger, bring on the price hikes because we’re not going anywhere — we barely have a choice.
At $6.99/month, ad-free Disney+ was an absolute steal at launch (November 2019; the ads didn’t come for another three years). The increase to $7.99 was totally fine; hell, we didn’t flinch at $10.99. With two kids, a mortgage, and respective careers in the lucrative fields of education and journalism, my wife and I don’t want to pay $13.99/month; but come October 12, we will. And when Disney inevitably raises prices again, we’ll probably pay that too.
You see, the Disney Bundle is not the company’s only antidote to churn. The real...

Last week it had seemed that the reign of Barbenheimer was over when Jason Statham came in between the two, but like all things that are meant to be together, this week sees the duo return to their rightful spots at one and two on the charts. Of course number one is the juggernaut that is Barbie with an additional $33.7 million added to its massive $526.3 million domestic take and nearly $1.2 billion in worldwide grosses. Those numbers officially put Greta Gerwig at the top of the charts for highest grossing female director of all time, pretty good for only her third solo directing gig. I wonder if she will keep her streak alive at the Academy Awards where she has been nominated for both of her previous films, Director and Screenplay for 2017’s Lady Bird and Screenplay for 2019’s Little Women. I would put money on it right now that she does,...

Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem cut through to second place on its opening day Wednesday with $10.2M at 3,513 theaters in what was another day led by Warner Bros.’ Barbie with $12.8M.
Barbie with already $394.5M in the bank stateside will cross the $400M mark today on her 14th day in release (I previously mis-counted), besting the 18-day runs to that box office benchmark of Top Gun: Maverick and Super Mario Bros Movie which crossed that domestic point in 18 days.
Paramount is still spotting low to mid $30M for the Nickelodeon/Point Grey animated Turtles movie which got an A CinemaScore by moviegoers. Others believe it could easily go north of $40M. Wednesday’s number includes the $3.85M the pic made in its Tuesday previews.

Forget the Chris Rock live-standup success or the “Love Is Blind” reunion’s epic failure: The real benchmark to Netflix exploring live sports should be based on… Universal “Sing 2.”
That’s the argument made Thursday morning by media analysts at MoffettNathanson; before you think we subscribe to some quack research, let Michael Nathanson explain his position.
Though you may know (and subscribe to) Netflix for original hits like “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” and “Bridgerton,” its massive library is comprised primarily of acquired film and TV content. Those third-party leftovers account for more than half of the time viewed on Netflix in the U.S. Compared to your average original series or movie, libraries are a stable, predictable, safe, and successful setup.

Finally, some real numbers to assess the value of PVOD play for studios. And it’s a revelation.
Top executives from Universal recently spoke at length to the New York Times, stating that the studio grossed $1 billion in less than three years (starting in July 2020). That’s when it began placing most of its films on PVOD after their third weekend (after 31 days if one opens to over $50 million).
Theatrical box office is reported daily; judging actual VOD revenue, to put it charitably, is a crapshoot. Premium Video on Demand (usually $19.99 for a 48-hour rental) and VOD can only be judged by their relative position on charts from platforms like iTunes, Vudu, and Google Play.
At IndieWire, we convey PVOD performance from the charts those three platforms provide on a weekly basis, but they provide only rankings with inconsistent metrics.
Beyond the interesting details in the Times story, the figures...

With $1.52 million on Thursday and a new 30-day total of $499.5 million, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will pass $500 million domestically sometime Friday, its 31st day in theatrical release. That means the Universal-released blockbuster could be on PVOD ($20 for a 48-hour rental) as soon as Tuesday – but the $100 million Illumination toon has now earned around $1.046 billion worldwide.
It’ll pass “Beauty and the Beast” ($504 million in 2017) and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” ($515 million in 2019) this weekend to become the 17th-biggest unadjusted domestic grosser ever. Its current global total puts it just below “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” ($1.046 billion in 2011).
It ranks second among animated films in North America, behind only “Incredibles 2” ($608 million in 2018), and once it passes the remake of “The Lion King” ($543 million) the whole “Is ‘The Lion King’ animated or live-action?” discourse won’t matter.

Disney maintained its lead on all VOD charts, now with a different title. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” replaced “Avatar: The Way of Water” (both $19.99) as #1 after a four-week run that arrived 100 days after its theatrical debut. “Quantumania” had a 60-day delay after its disappointing $213 million domestic box office. Both films stand apart from the recent norm of home play before 31 days.
No word yet when “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate), “Air” (MGM), or most importantly “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) will make the leap. “Super Mario Bros.” might be available within two weeks (based on the 31-day window established in 2020 by the just-ousted NBC/Universal CEO Jeff Shell). Any of those films might prevent “Quantumania” from establishing more than a two-week run at #1.
One other new film entered the three lists, which reflected 14 titles among the 30 slots. Sundance Grand Prize winner “A Thousand and One” (Focus) grossed under...

Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie continues its global domination, now with an estimated $871.8M through Sunday. Of that, $437.5M is from the international box office. The next worldwide benchmark of $900M will hit in the next days. It is only a matter of time for the Bros to get to $1B, particularly as Korea and Japan are due to release this week.
In the meantime, the third session for the Aaron Horvath/Michael Jelenic-directed adaptation put another $70.7M in the overseas pipeline from 78 markets, repping a 38% drop in the holdovers. There were seven new markets added this frame (see below).
Along with the domestic milestones, Super Mario Bros is the biggest release of 2023 at the global and International box office; the No. 2 animated film worldwide since 2019 (soon to overtake Illumination/Universal’s own Minions: The Rise of Gru); the No. 2 animated...

Expect “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to capture the high score at the box office… again.
Despite the release of two new movies — Universal’s wacky Dracula horror-comedy “Renfield” and Sony’s R-rated demonic thriller “The Pope’s Exorcist” — Universal and Illumination’s animated adaptation of the popular Nintendo video game looks to loom large in its second weekend of release.
After its towering $146 million debut, “Mario” is estimated to bring in $58 million to $66 million, a 55-60% decline from its opening. The PG blockbuster, which cost $100 million and brought back the all-important demographic of family audiences, has generated $204.6 million in North America and $375 million globally since opening last Wednesday. It’s already the fourth-highest grossing animated movie in pandemic times, following “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($939 million), “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” ($480 million) and “Sing 2” ($408 million).
Among newcomers, “Renfield” hopes to bring in $10 million from 3,300 theaters in North America.

It felt right when it was announced that Nintendo was making an animated "Mario" movie. Live-action always seemed like an odd fit for the legendary gaming company's most recognizable mascot. And while one can feel however they want to feel about what Universal and Illumination cooked up in partnership with Nintendo, there's no denying that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is a monster hit. It will be the highest-grossing video game movie ever by far following its record-shattering opening weekend at the box office. The question now becomes, what's next?

In a major win for the box office as it continues to level out following the pandemic, The Super Mario Bros. Movie shattered numerous records in its opening across North America and 70 international markets over the long Easter holiday weekend.
The movie blasted past even the most bullish expectations to earn $204.6 million in its five-day domestic debut (April 5-9), including $146.4 million for the three-day weekend. Overseas, it pulled in $171 million for an astounding worldwide start of $375.6 million, the best showing of the year to date on all fronts.
The adaptation of the iconic Nintendo video game played like an all-audience tentpole, versus a PG-rated animated family film, thanks to the consumers of all ages who have played the Super Mario Bros. series and its many offshoots through the decades.
