1.120: Sonnet #88: nice idea but delivery seems rushed and lacking good construction
An interesting sonnet to read because, by my standards, sonnet 88 is not really love but rather a self-destructive form of submission that would not be appreciated – even if it sounds romantic when said as a possible future. This short makes it interesting by setting the proposals in the present, and making the submission a part of a divorce. Shot on the steps in front of a court house, the man hands over evidence to support his (ex)wife in her claims. It is a clever idea and I liked it on that level.
The delivery of the film is not as good as the idea though. The use of the comedic music doesn't really fit with the performance – and the delivery of the sonnet is fair to 'straight' for this comedy edge to work. This mean the text feels like it is detached from the other performances and touches, whereas the good idea should have meant it all tied together really well. The shoot itself looks fairly rushed, and it did feel like the total idea wasn't really nailed down. Maybe the issue is the lead performance (which does feel 'Shakespeare 101' in delivery), but wherever the issue lies, this is a bit disappointing because the concept really could have done a great job with the text if the delivery had been a lot more consistent and on-point.
