No one sets out to be an object of obsession.
On Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” when Martha (Jessica Gunning) enters the pub where down-and-out comedian Donny Dunn (show creator and writer Richard Gadd) works, she is looking downcast, like she’s trying to disappear. One simple cup of tea opens her up. It’s an act of kindness (or pity), but that’s all it takes for Donny to become her new fixation. Her interest in him unfolds in a montage of colorful outfits, badly applied pink lipstick and lies. She sends him tens of thousands of emails, ranging from the randy (“myy curtains r waitinfro yu they r readyy”) to the ranting (“i just had an egg”). She follows him home and sits outside his window for hours, pretends to be a hot-shot lawyer with politicians’ names in her phone and to own a penthouse in Belsize Park. Martha...

Elizabeth Olsen told The Times of London in a recently-published interview (conducted pre-strike) that she is aggressively seeking a “variation” of characters after working for four years solely in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Olsen filmed “WandaVision” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” back to back, which was perhaps too much time dedicated to only playing Scarlet Witch. That’s a large reason Olsen was drawn to playing alleged axe murderer Candy Montgomery in Max’s “Love and Death.”
“I’m trying to figure out… Because, specifically in the last four years, my output has been Marvel,” Olsen said. “I don’t want… it’s not that I don’t want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them...

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. That's right -- it's officially pumpkin spice season, which means we've drawn near to the end of August and have well and truly reached the last third of 2023. But more than reminding us of the fleetingness of life and the unstoppable ravages of time, the beginning of September also ushers in the fall movie season and, of course, another round of streaming service shuffling as various movies and shows get kicked around in a never-ending digital dance.
That's why we're here. For those who tend to rely on these streaming platforms to re-watch their favorites or (hopefully) explore previously unknown corners of cinema and television, well, the end of each month and beginning of the next are easily the busiest times of the year. And for that, it...

Jake Gyllenhaal took on the wings of death in the “Hot Ones” Season 20 finale Thursday, and — after jokingly questioning who would use a toothpick during the process — walked back his comment when he found out it was Elizabeth Olsen.
After a middle-of-the-road sauce with a Mermaid on its label, Gyllenhaal drew attention to the toothpicks and wet napkins available for use beside his chicken wing platter. He competitively refused to use either one, humorously dragging any “a–hole” who’d done so before him.
“What a–hole used a f–kin’ toothpick?” the “Covenant” star asked, incredulously.

Exclusive: Jorge Vargas (‘Snowpiercer’), Tanaya Beatty (‘Yellowstone,’), and Skywalker Hughes (‘Joe Pickett’) are rounding out the previously announced cast of Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton’s In The Blink of an Eye starring Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, and Daveed Diggs. Principal photography has now commenced in British Columbia.
The movie follows three storylines, spanning thousands of years, intersect and reflect on hope, connection and the circle of life. Jared Ian Goldman (Ingrid Goes West, ‘Russian Doll’) produces the pic written and executive produced by Colby Day (Spaceman).
“From the first read I knew Colby Day’s script was special,” said Stanton, “and it has only become more rarified of a project as our team has formed. What a privilege to have such an ideal cast and crew realize this beautiful story.”
“Andrew is a visionary artist whose unique gifts as a storyteller shine in this beautiful film,” added Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum.

Amazon has released Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ “Atlanta” follow-up, “Swarm,” on Prime Video just days after the first hour of the “clever and fiendish” horror satire divided critics at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival.
Dominique Fishback plays an impoverished exotic dancer whose fixation on her favorite pop star, a stand-in for Beyoncé, incurs deadly consequences. While “Swarm” directly addresses toxic fandom in the age of social media, the series is rooted in classics like “The King of Comedy” and “Misery.” Glover himself has described it as a blend of Martin Scorsese’s black comedy and a “post-truth ‘Piano Teacher.’” More recent points of comparison include “Ingrid Goes West” and “Magazine Dreams.”

O’Shea Jackson Jr. is most proud of his “junior” status as Ice Cube’s son.

Aubrey Plaza is on a roll. It took a while for her to find her way after "Parks and Recreation" ended and her time as April Ludgate came to a close. Appearing alongside Robert DeNiro in 2016's "Dirty Grandpa" didn't quite catapult her to megastar level, and while 2017's "Ingrid Goes West" was a memorable entry in her filmography, she seemed to fade from the spotlight after her brief flirtation with next-level stardom.
But a consistent output of strong performances in indies like "The Little Hours," "An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn," and "Addicted to Fresno" have demonstrated Plaza's versatile talents and tireless work ethic. And now things have picked up even more, and Plaza is, according to GQ, "leveling up." 2022's "Emily The Criminal" saw her deliver a surprisingly raw performance as an embattled catering company worker turned fraudster. That was quickly followed by a starring role in...

Allison Williams is chiming in on the New York Magazine-inspired nepotism discourse with a decidedly different take from her fellow stars with famous parents.
The magazine’s deep dive into the invisible network of family ties that makes up the media industry and how Hollywood’s tried-and-true practice of giving the children of famous celebrities a boost up the ladder, caused waves of discussion that rubbed some famous faces the wrong way.
Williams, who is the daughter of former “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams and TV producer Jane Gillan Stoddard, addressed the double-edged sword that is nepotism and privilege in conversation with Wired.
“I didn’t want anyone to see me growing, learning, changing, shifting,” the actress says, reflecting on her role as Marnie Michaels on the HBO series “Girls”. “I was definitely concerned with making sure people understood I was a hard worker, as if somehow that would absolve me of the privilege.

Aubrey Plaza will be grabbing a broomstick to join Marvel's series "Agatha: Coven of Chaos," according to Variety. The talented "White Lotus" actor will appear alongside Kathryn Hahn, who memorably embodied the devious witch Agatha Harkness in the Disney+ series "WandaVision" last year. Plot details about "Coven of Chaos" are as scarce as usual for a Marvel project, and Plaza's role has yet to be revealed.
"Agatha: Coven of Chaos" was initially introduced in reporting as "House of Harkness" before its name change was revealed at Comic-Con this summer. Along with Hahn and Plaza, the series is reportedly set to include "Heartstopper" breakout star Joe Locke as well as Emma Caulfield Ford, who appeared in "WandaVision" as Sarah Proctor, Aka Dottie. That last bit of casting is the only hint that "Agatha: Coven of Chaos" may continue the "WandaVision" story in some capacity, as Sarah was revealed to be...

Since a certain show about houses and dragons just wrapped, HBO Max has a big scheduling hole fill next month. How will they go about it? Let’s find out with the streamer’s list of new releases for November 2022!
Obviously, there is no replacing House of the Dragon‘s cultural impact so HBO is looking for some singles in November, rather than the homerun. Things get started on in promising fashion on Nov. 3. That date sees the premiere of Titans season 4 and the interesting true crime documentary Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty. The former will continue the adventures of DC’s heralded Titans team (and introduce some new heavy hitters) while the latter will try to keep pace with Netflix’s prolific true crime output.

Aubrey Plaza opted to go method for 2016 sex comedy “Dirty Grandpa” — and “freaked out” co-star Robert De Niro in the process.
Following a screening of Plaza’s latest film “Emily the Criminal” at the London Film Festival, the “Parks and Recreation” alum recalled her first film post-NBC sitcom fame.
“At first I think I came on really strong. I did some questionable things I wouldn’t do anymore,” Plaza admitted of working with Academy Award winner De Niro (via Variety). “I didn’t really have a relationship with him off-camera because he’s him. I didn’t have time to get to know him. He shows up in a puff of smoke, and there’s no chatting at the water cooler.”
Plaza continued, “By the time he’d show up, I’m in character. My character had one goal: To have sex with him. I was acting totally insane...

Aubrey Plaza has opened up about “weirding out” Robert De Niro when the pair worked together in 2016’s “Dirty Grandpa.”
The actor and producer addressed years of swirling rumors about “being weird” and spoke about her commitment to her films at every stage of the process during a London Film Festival ScreenTalk session hosted by Leigh Singer, ahead of the release of Plaza’s new film “Emily The Criminal”.
Reflecting on her working relationship with the “Raging Bull” actor (the two actors played lovers in Dan Mazer’s gross-out comedy), Plaza clarified that any way De Niro could have been offended by her behavior would have been due to her staying committed to her character.
“I didn’t really have a relationship with him off camera because he’s him,” Plaza said when asked about how well she and De Niro knew each other. “I didn’t have time to get to know him,...

When audiences last saw Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff in Disney’s May box office juggernaut “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” it certainly looked like Olsen’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was over. Definitively, actually: An entire castle collapsed on Wanda, a building brought down by her own powerful magic after she sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold — the evil book that had corrupted her, turning her into a nearly unbeatable villain for most of the movie.
For Olsen, 33, who burst into the movie world with 2011’s Sundance Film Festival sensation “Martha Marcy May Marlene” — and saw her profile skyrocket as Wanda (aka the Scarlet Witch) in six Marvel movies,...

Aubrey Plaza isn’t a comedy star. Or an action star. Or a sarcastic sidekick. She’s simply, and forever will be, an artistic chameleon. But that’s redundant, isn’t it?
The actress spoke with “Emily the Criminal” co-star Theo Rossi during a SAG-AFTRA Foundation screening and Q&a moderated by IndieWire’s Eric Kohn. Plaza, who has made headlines for drawing comparisons to “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” for her role in the credit card scam drama, addressed being typecast early in her career, especially coming off of hit sitcom “Parks and Recreation.” (Watch the panel in full below.)
“I don’t mind being typecast because I feel like I was so lucky to be on ‘Parks and Recreation,’ and that was one of my first really big jobs, and I am so heavily associated with that character,” Plaza said of famously playing scene-stealing sarcastic secretary April Ludgate. “I think...

Board up the haunted houses and keep your creepy woods: In the modern age, there’s simply no place more terrifying than the internet.
Since even before the days of the Sandra Bullock-starring “The Net” from 1995, cyberspace has provided a compelling backdrop to countless horror, thriller, and suspense films. Some are rooted in science fiction, while others employ the supernatural. The eerie expanse of the web provides for it all and is made infinitely more interesting by the spooky implications of an unseen world that millions of users don’t actually understand.
Found footage flicks are among some of the first scary internet movies to come to mind, with cheeky titles like “Unfriended,” “Followers,” and even “#Horror” bringing a knowing goofiness to the conceit of computer screen films. “Searching” and “Host” garnered newfound appreciation for the format, integrating smart authenticity into their design and direction. Emily the Criminal was previously reviewed as part of our Sundance 2022 coverage.
Plot: A woman (Aubrey Plaza) with 75,000 in debt can’t find a well-paying job due to a felony conviction on her record. Desperate for money, she gets sucked into the world of credit card fraud and becomes a criminal.
Review: Aubrey Plaza has never really gotten her due as an actress. Watch her in Parks and Recreation, then in Ingrid Goes West, then in something like Black Bear. Her range is extraordinary. Emily the Criminal is a slick crime thriller that has an excellent chance to break out beyond the indie scene and could maybe give her the A-list status she merits – assuming people see it that is. Hopefully, they do because John Patton Ford’s debut is an absorbing crime drama that evocatively charts a woman’s evolution from put upon wage slave to hardcore criminal. It...

When you think of Aubrey Plaza, you probably think of comedy — six years on an acclaimed TV sitcom has that affect. But with her April Ludgate days behind her, Plaza is branching out. The past few years have seen the actress exploring darker territory, with films like the social media satire "Ingrid Goes West," and the dark meta-thriller "Black Bear." Keeping the trend going, Plaza's latest role sees her descending into a life of crime as the titular Emily in "Emily The Criminal."

America’s indie sweetheart just stole our hearts again — literally.
Sundance darling Aubrey Plaza stars in “Emily the Criminal” about a credit card scam gone wrong. The first feature written and directed by John Patton Ford, “Emily the Criminal” centers on Emily (Plaza), who is saddled with mounting art school student debt and without a job thanks to her criminal record. To make ends meet, Emily poses as a “dummy shopper,” someone who buys goods with stolen credit cards.
The mastermind behind the operation? Charismatic middleman Youcef (Theo Rossi) whose devil may care attitude seduces Emily and bankrolls her shady future. Both Emily and Youcef are poised to take their scam to the next level in Los Angeles, but will it all fall apart?
“Emily the Criminal” premieres August 12 in theaters. The film also stars Gina Gershon, Megalyn Echikunwok, Jonathan Avigdori, and Bernardo Badillo.

There is a universe where Elizabeth Olsen starred in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Cannes jury prize-winning “The Lobster,” but alas, the “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” star was already committed to Marvel.
Olsen, who has played Wanda Maximoff Aka the Scarlet Witch in MCU installments since 2014, is looking back at the alternate realities of her career, including Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated film.
“I started to feel frustrated,” Olsen told The New York Times about being locked in to a Marvel contract. “I had this job security but I was losing these pieces that I felt were more part of my being. And the further I got away from that, the less I became considered for it.”
Olsen previously called losing out on “The Lobster” a “heartbreak,” explaining at the 2015 American Film Festival (via Variety) that she was “in a contract [for Marvel] I could not get out of. So that didn’t work out.

“Made for Love” is a series about relationships, specifically a toxic one of control and possession. It sounds difficult that a situation like that could be made humorous, but creators Christina Lee and Dean Bakopoulous have done just that. The series follows Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti), the wife of tech entrepreneur Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen). Last season saw Hazel escape Byron’s tech-fortress, known as The Hub, only to discover he’d implanted a chip in her brain to see her every thought.

As this year’s Sundance Film Festival comes to a close, the mostly virtual event introduced a hefty number of films worth getting excited about beyond the festival. The hope was this year would have marked a return to an in-person Sundance, but this year’s festival still played home to a wide variety of wonderful films.
From new works from some of our favorite filmmakers to rising stars making their debuts, our favorites include the latest from SXSW winner Cooper Raiff (the charming “Cha Cha Real Smooth”), Aubrey Plaza’s latest leading-lady evolution (“Emily the Criminal”), a pair of character-centric dramedies starring some of our greatest living actors, provocative documentaries, the inevitable Kanye West deep dive (“jeen-yuhs”), and at least one movie about a very big egg and the girl that loves it.
At publication, a number of these films have already been picked up for distribution; some even have release dates ready.

For a decade now, Aubrey Plaza has been the star of several of the buzziest movies to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Her streak started with 2012’s “Safety Not Guaranteed” and continued every couple years with 2014’s “Life After Beth,” 2017’s “Ingrid Goes West,” and 2020’s “Black Bear.”
Plaza is back at the virtual 2022 fest with “Emily the Criminal,” a debut feature film from writer-director John Patton Ford. For Plaza, who has explored troubled characters before, such as in “Ingrid Goes West,” the film marks a bold step into the thriller realm. She spoke about that along with her director, joined by the film’s co-stars Megalyn Echikunwoke and Theo Rossi, for a conversation in TheWrap’s Sundance studio.
Ford touched upon the plot of the film. “It’s about a young woman who has a lot of student debt, who decides to become a criminal to pay her student loans,...

Like the rest of us, Aubrey Plaza devoured the first season of “The White Lotus,” HBO’s buzzy social satire about insufferable vacationers and seemingly cheerful employees at a luxurious Hawaiian resort. Unlike the rest of us, Plaza was cast on the show’s second season.
Beyond the chance to appear on the hit show, Plaza says she’s most looking forward to working with Mike White, who created, wrote and directed “The White Lotus.”
“I was a fan of Season 1, but more importantly, I was a big Mike White fan,” Plaza said at Variety’s virtual Sundance Studio presented by Audible, where she’s on the press circuit for her coming-of-age thriller “Emily the Criminal.” Before the pandemic, Plaza and White had been collaborating on a creative project that “kind of got messed up by the Covid of it all.”

“King Richard,” the true saga of how Richard Williams (Will Smith) turned his athletic daughters into tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, started off as an idea from Tim White, who co-founded Star Thrower Entertainment with his filmmaker brother, Trevor. Once they decided to pursue the Williams family’s story, the Whites proceeded to do just about everything right. In Hollywood, this is rare.
Here are the ways the White brothers delivered an entertaining, authentic, and uplifting movie that Warner Bros. is pushing for the Best Picture Oscar.
1. A relatable narrative, tied to recognizable names.
Tim grew up in Annapolis, Maryland playing competitive tennis, from the junior nationals to the minor leagues. He knew the Richard Williams story, and when he was a teenager, saw him in the stadiums rooting for his kids. “I remember him holding up the signs and hearing people talking about him as this controversial guy,...

Producers Adam Mirels and Robbie Mirels of 141 Entertainment, the team behind Ana Lily Amirpour’s hotly anticipated “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon,” which plays Sunday in competition at the Venice Film Festival, have signed an option to remake director-writer Sameh Zoabi’s 2018 Venice Horizons Award entry “Tel Aviv on Fire.” The adaptation will be set on the border between the Sonora region of Mexico and a small Arizona town.
Zoabi’s original film nabbed the best actor award in Venice Horizons and went on to receive a host of international kudos. The film uses comedy to explore the absurdity of everyday life under a militarized border force. The remake will utilize these themes and the universal romantic-comedy at its core.
141 Entertainment will attach a Spanish-speaking writer and director to adapt the work to its new U.S. border setting. Zoabi will remain involved creatively and will also serve...

Lil Rel Howery, Billy Magnussen and Jillian Bell will star in the ensemble comedy film “Reunion.”
The movie is the first greenlit project for Artists Road, the comedy film joint venture that was formed in October by Spyglass Media Group, Propagate Content, Artists First and Off-Road Productions. The pic puts a darkly humorous spin on the classic whodunnit. It centers on a murder that takes place during a snowstorm at a high school reunion party, which leaves guests trapped in an isolated mansion trying to piece together clues.
Chris Nelson (“The Perfect Date”) is directing the movie from a screenplay by the “The Edge of Sleep” writing duo, Jake Emanuel and Willie Block.
Howery and Bell previously appeared together in “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” the acclaimed 2019 Amazon comedy. Bell’s credits also include “Rough Night,” “Cowboys,” and “Godmothered,” while Howery has appeared in the likes of “Get Out,” “Tag” and the upcoming “Free Guy.

Aubrey Plaza is set to star in the Hulu drama pilot “Olga Dies Dreaming,” Variety has learned.
The show was ordered to pilot at the streamer back in April. It tells the story of a Nuyorican brother and sister (Plaza) from a gentrifying Sunset Park, Brooklyn, reckoning with the absent, politically radical mother and their glittering careers among New York City’s elite in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
Plaza will star in the title role as Olga, a renowned wedding planner whose surface successes mask a darker interior. For Olga, the pursuit of perfection has become a compulsive survival mechanism as she tries to climb as far from her past as she can. Still, she can’t shake the feeling that the important people she knows don’t see her as their equals and this nagging sense that her success is an illusion always leaves her wanting more.
