Theatergoers got up close and personal with Evan Rachel Wood during recent surprise appearances in Sleep No More.
The Golden Globe–nominated actress, 32, shocked attendees at the interactive, immersive live experience during two New York performances in December. Wood, who currently can be heard lending her voice to Disney’s Frozen 2, played the role of the Nurse during the show.
Held at the McKittrick Hotel in New York City, Sleep No More is a unique show that takes guests on a choose-your-own-adventure style narrative beyond a single stage, instead roaming throughout the space.

Over the weekend, I went to two kinds of theatrical hauntings: Saturday was an immersive theater performance called “The Johnny Cycle,” held at an actual mausoleum north of Los Angeles, surrounded by long-interred bodies of the well-to-do. Sunday was a sleek funhouse on Hollywood and Vine to promote the movie “It: Chapter 2.” The two hauntings were scary in different ways.
Both are personal to me. I went to the “Johnny Cycle” at the invitation of new friends who help run the Speakeasy Society theater company, which mounted the production. I went to “The It Experience Chapter 2” with another friend who makes documentaries about Stephen King movies and is currently making one about “It.”
The “It Experience” is haunted with killer clowns and excellent actors in bodysuits and top-notch jump scares and tasteful advertising for a horror sequel due in theaters next week. But “The Johnny Cycle” is haunted by thoughts...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains mild spoilers for “What/If” Season 1, in that any details about the twist-heavy plot are technically spoilers.]
It actually takes a lot of hard, focused work to make a TV show so bad it’s good. Think of “Barry.” The excellent HBO comedy is only getting better, but Bill Hader is a great (Emmy-winning) actor being asked to portray a bad one. Sure, the “SNL” veteran knows what a bad actor looks like — he was, after all, still part of the cast when Gerard Butler hosted — but he also knows what makes bad acting entertaining. “Barry” is filled with awful performances used toward brilliant comedy, whether it’s the tone deaf choices of his acting class or Barry trying to act (aka lie) in his day-to-day life.
Now, instead of just one element of the show being bad, imagine an entire series built from that same qualitative mentality. Putting all those pieces together is difficult, let alone finding a story to support them, but “What / If” does exactly that.

Now that October is officially underway, that means we have a big week of Blu-ray and DVD releases to get excited for, and there are some great genre-related titles coming out on Tuesday. Universal Studios Home Entertainment is unleashing both Tales from the Hood 2 and The First Purge on multiple formats, and for fans of action cinema, Death Race: Beyond Anarchy races home this week, too. Kino Lorber is giving both The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler the limited edition treatment, and for those who enjoy indie horror, Feral, Housewife, and Blood Fest are certainly all worth your time.
Other notable releases for October 2nd include Extremity, Molly, The Legend of Halloween Jack, The Evil Dead in 4K, Sleep No More, and West of Hell, with Rob Zombie’s Halloween getting a Steelbook release as well.

What if you never had to sleep again? Would you be more productive than you could ever imagine, or would you lose your mind? Five graduate students set out to stay awake for 200 hours in Sleep No More, but they might be driven insane by psychological horrors both imagined and real in the process. With Sleep No More coming to DVD, VOD, and digital platforms on October 2nd from Rlje Films, we caught up with director Phillip Guzman (Dead Awake) to discuss telling a horror story set in the ’80s, working with a talented ensemble of actors, and his fascination with sleep-centric stories.
Congratulations on Sleep No More, Phillip! How did the opportunity to direct this film come about, and what attracted you to Jason Murphy’s screenplay?
Phillip Guzman: Thanks so much for watching! The screenplay was sent to me by my good friend Brea Grant, who knew I...

Hello, readers! October is only a few hours away now, and beyond the fact that most of us have been counting down to the official start of everyone’s favorite month, it also means that we have a brand new batch of horror and sci-fi releases to look forward to on digital and VOD platforms in the coming weeks.
Easily the busiest day of October (and possibly even all of 2018), there are 11 different movies hitting various platforms on October 2nd, with highlights including The First Purge, Tales From the Hood 2, Sleep No More and Molly. On October 5th, one of my favorite films of 2018, Heavy Trip, is making its digital debut, and Knuckleball, featuring Michael Ironside, comes home the same day as well.
Netflix is keeping very busy throughout October, too, with a variety of films and genre-related series that fans are certainly going to want to check out in the coming weeks.
