Get ready for a tense ride because writers/directors Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s Rose Plays Julie never relinquishes its sense of brooding until the very last frame’s welcome exhale of relief. Why should they considering the subject matter? This is a dark story dealing with a reality too many women have experienced without the means for guaranteed justice. So while it might be a spoiler to say, I’m not sure it’s possible to speak about the film without mentioning how everything we witness is the result of a rape that occurred two decades previously. That event led to Rose’s (Ann Skelly) birth. It forced Ellen (Orla Brady) to explicitly state that she did not want her daughter to ever reach out. And its shared pain drives them today.
We see it in Rose’s trepidation when calling Ellen’s phone number—something she probably...

It took filmmaker Diane Paragas 15 years to bring “Yellow Rose” to the big screen. She kept hearing that no one wanted to see a story about a Filipino immigrant growing up in Texas.
Paragas changed her screenplay a few times, and almost gave up until an encounter with filmmaker Mira Nair at the Toronto Film Festival inspired her to stay true to telling the story she wanted to tell. The film stars Broadway star and Tony Award nominee Eva Noblezada in her feature debut as Rose, a young undocumented immigrant in Texas who watches as Ice captures her mother. Rose struggles as she straddles pursuing her dream of becoming a country singer or facing a return to the Philippines to be with her mother.
Below, Paragas talks with Variety about the journey, her casting and why she chose country music as her genre.

When Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit theaters, the movie split audience opinion in half quicker than Darth Maul was bisected in The Phantom Menace. J.J. Abrams had played it incredibly safe with The Force Awakens by using nostalgia to power his relaunch of the beloved franchise, but Rian Johnson was vilified for making some major changes to the established mythology.
Of course, the filmmaker eventually found himself being widely thanked for his contributions to the series once The Rise of Skywalker became the subject of the fanbase’s ire, but one of the more unpleasant points of contention was the backlash directed towards Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico. The young actress must have thought her career had been changed forever by securing a prominent role in The Last Jedi, but she was ultimately forced off social media entirely after being the target of a torrent of online abuse.

As many as 19 films were competing for the awards of the 38th Golden Rose Film Festival in Varna, Bulgaria. The international jury has given its verdict, and the 2020 Golden Rose for Best Bulgarian Feature has gone to Ivaylo Hristov’s Fear, “for the skill to narrate ironically a story about daunting challenges”. Fear also earned Svetlana Yancheva the Best Actress Award: in the film, she plays a village school teacher who takes an African refugee under her wing, protecting him from the villagers’ xenophobia. The 38th Golden Rose showed an interesting trend in Bulgarian cinema: actors taking on directorial duties and making impressive features. Besides Ivaylo Hristov, who has been forging a strong directing career alongside his impressive acting filmography, actress Yana Titova won the Best First Feature Award for her independent film A Dose of Happiness, which explores the challenges of a young mother fighting a heroin addiction....

‘Point of No Return.’
Vincent Monton is understandably chuffed that Australians have the chance to discover – or rediscover – his telemovie Point of No Return 25 years after it premiered on Network 10.
Umbrella Entertainment released a digitally restored version of the drama written and directed by Monton, which starred Marcus Graham and Nikki Coghill, on DVD and VOD this month.
Graham played the dual roles of Grady, a former soldier who is traumatized by his experiences in war and prison, and his murdered brother Kristian.
Grady escapes from custody after attending Kristian’s funeral. Coghill is Kate, the girlfriend of the protagonist who later hooked up with his brother.
The producer, the late Phillip Emanuel, had raised the budget to make a telemovie about a prison break but was not happy with the script so he approached Monton. The offer was to write a screenplay in three weeks, which he could...

Street Fighter V first arrived in early 2016 and what started as a barely-playable disaster with a scant roster of 16 has been improved to become one of the best fighting games currently on the market. And in June, Capcom held a special live stream to promote what will be its fifth and final season of downloadable content for the game. When all is said and done, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition will have 45 fighters, the most in any Street Fighter game.
Oddly enough, the stream did not include any trailers. Even still, there was plenty of news about the next year-plus of Street Fighter V.
For the quick version, here’s the Season 5 Roadmap:
There are five new characters coming in the last batch of Dlc, with the last one still a mystery. Let’s take a deeper look at the crew.
First up is Dan Hibiki, who is set to come out this winter.

The Emmys are pretty stingy when it comes to giving out posthumous awards. A 2017 Goldderby piece proclaimed that the reason the Emmys haven’t honored the dead is because the voters are not sentimental. I think that’s part of the reason, but I also think it’s just so sad when they do win. To clarify, it’s not that they shouldn’t have won, it’s just so emotional to see spouses, friends, children and co-workers go up on stage and accept the award in their honor.
Remember John Travolta’s impassioned acceptance speech for his late girlfriend Diana Hyland, and “Boy in the Plastic Bubble” co-star who won the Emmy for outstanding performance by a supporting actress in a comedy or dramatic special? She had died in his arms of breast cancer in March 1977 at the age of 41. The audience was crying as hard as Travolta. “Wherever you are,...

The 24th edition of Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan) closed off on Thursday in limited capacity, finishing up the first fully-hybrid film festival in the world. Unlike many of its peers this year, Bifan hosted screenings in-theaters (at 35% capacity) alongside its online program on local streaming service Watcha. Because of the in-person offering, Bifan unwittingly witnessed the world premiere of more films than originally intended, including Annecy contender “Beauty Water”. The famous genre film festival has stood as a monumental alternative to the popular online festival format.
Among this year’s winners, German production “Pelican Blood” (Katrin Gebbe) won Best of Bucheon with raving reviews. Pouya Aminpori’s Iranian short “The Third Person” championed the Best Short Film, and regularly sold-out screenings “Saint Maud” and “Sheep Without a Shepherd” carved out their own fair share of recognition. The Big Finish audio line is now set to achieve a landmark though by casting its first openly transgender companion for the Doctor, to be played by Rebecca Root as part of an adventure involving Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor.

Emily Cook is a huge Doctor Who fan. She has been since 2005 when, as a young girl, her parents suggested she join them to watch the return of a sci-fi show they had loved back in the day. ‘That sounds boring,’ thought Emily – and then she reluctantly sat down in front of ‘Rose‘, the debut episode of Russell T Davies’s revamped Doctor Who, and the rest is history.

Alexis Ostrander, an Emmy-nominee for Hulu’s “Light as a Feather,” is set to direct a film based on the groundbreaking U.S. women’s rowing team of 1975 known as “The Red Rose Crew,” which 101 Studios will produce, finance and distribute, the studio announced Thursday.
The sports film is the first feature developed as part of Sports Illustrated Studios, 101 Studios’ partnership with the owner of the Si brand Authentic Brands Group.
The film will be based on Daniel J. Boyne’s biography “The Red Rose Crew: A True Story Of Women, Winning, and The Water.” In 1975, a group of inspiring women rowed their way to international glory, battling sexual prejudice, bureaucracy and male domination to usher in a new era for competitive sports. “I’ve written the end of the world 100 times,” says legendary Doctor Who writer and former showrunner Russell T. Davies (quoted on the BBC website), “but I never imagined everyone just sitting at home.”
However, thanks to the global crisis that is Coronavirus/Covid-19, this is exactly the situation that people around the globe currently find themselves in – we’re staying at home as much as possible, wondering when normal human life will be able to kick back into action, and taking part in an endless stream of Zoom-based quizzes.
Amidst all this strangeness, the Doctor is offering a glimmer of hope. Current Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall has rallied the ranks of Doctor Who writers past and present, egging them on to share new stories about that eccentric alien with the blue box.

Ben Luxford gives details following March funding round.
The BFI’s Audience Fund will be “very relaxed” on activity and targets and will offer flexibility on cash flow during the coronavirus-induced shutdown, according to the BFI head of audiences Ben Luxford.
Luxford said ensuring the survival of the organisations it supports is the Fund’s priority.
“The pressure on organisations like Bristol Watershed or Newcastle Tyneside when your income suddenly disappears – you’ve got to look at what you’ve got,” he said.
“This has meant conversations with funders like us around ‘can we actually repurpose this just to keep the organisation alive?...

The Doctor Who fan community has really come together since we all went into quarantine, with various livestream screenings of beloved episodes keeping us entertained. First of all, “The Day of the Doctor” got the treatment, with writer Steven Moffat and star Dan Starkey sharing a hilarious new intro for the anniversary special. Then it was “Rose,” which aired 15 years ago last week. For that, ex-showrunner Russell T. Davies not only wrote a short prequel to the episode, but also released an even longer sequel story which reveals the untold tale of what happens next.
As fans will know, “Rose” was the first installment in the modern era of Who, introducing us to the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler as they battled the Nestene Consciousness and its army of living plastic mannequins. Obviously, the heroes defeat the alien monster in the end. However, this sequel reveals that the Nestene managed...

The world is in trouble, so obviously the Doctor has returned to help us. This morning, the official Doctor Who social media accounts shared a brand new video featuring Jodie Whittaker in character as the Thirteenth Doctor, which sees her offering some much needed words of encouragement in these difficult times.
The video, filmed remotely, showcases Whittaker in full costume “self-isolating” in a closet, with the Time Lord apparently hiding from an army of Sontarans. Check it out in the tweet below:

Over the weekend, housebound Whovians lifted their spirits by holding a global rewatch of Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor.” Stars of the show – such as Osgood actress Ingrid Oliver – even got involved, live-tweeting their reactions. Best of all, though, was the arrival of a brand new introduction to the episode, starring (the voice of) Dan Starkey and written by ex-showrunner Steven Moffat.
The rewatch occurred at 7Pm U.K. time this past Saturday, so Starkey dropped the special intro on his Twitter account shortly before it was time to hit play. The hilarious skit sees the actor reprise his beloved character Strax with the help of a pint-sized stuffed toy. Moffat clearly had fun getting topical, too, with the script making references to the most recent season of the series.

Various unsavory corners of the media were practically salivating this week at the ‘news’ that Jodie Whittaker’s first season as the Doctor was turning into a ratings disaster. The Sun and The Daily Mail claimed that ratings had ‘plunged’ after viewers were apparently turned off by “politically correct plots” and *those* gross and sticky corners of the internet leapt upon these stories like rabid dogs, eager for proof that they were right all along when they said Doctor Who would never work with a woman in the lead role.
And it’s true, ratings have declined from the show’s premiere “The Woman Who Fell to Earth.” That episode racked up a total of 10.95m viewers, whereas by episode 5, “The Tsuranga Conundrum,” they’d shed more the 3m viewers for a total of 7.76m. Looking at those figures alone you might conclude that any TV show that’s lost...

The Doctor is back, and in record-breaking style, it seems.
We already knew that the Doctor Who season 11 premiere was a huge hit with viewers and critics, but today we’ve received confirmation that it scored the highest viewing figures for a season premiere in the history of the show. “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” clocked up an impressive 10.9 million viewers, making it the biggest drama launch of the year for the BBC.
Impressively, it just squeezed out the 2005 revival premiere, “Rose,” which scored 10.8 million viewers and was the first appearance of Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor (and the first appearance of the Doctor since the show was cancelled in 1989). That was hyped up enormously, so Jodie Whittaker’s debut beating it is no mean feat.
In a statement released this week, here’s what showrunner Chris Chibnall had to share about the achievement:

Last week, Doctor Who fans made sure to catch the season 11 opener “The Woman Who Fell To Earth” to see Jodie Whittaker’s proper debut as the Thirteenth Doctor. The result was that the episode earned an impressive 8.2 million viewers in overnight ratings. For comparison, this was the highest-viewed “regular” installment of the show (so not counting one-off specials) since 2008. But the big question was, would this continue on?
Well, we now know that the answer to that is a big fat yes. This Sunday’s second episode, titled “The Ghost Monument,” scored a strong 7.1 million viewers. Sure, that’s a million less than last week, but it’s actually a low drop-off in the grand scheme of things. For instance, “Into the Dalek” – Peter Capaldi’s second episode from 2014 – dipped by 2 million.

The increasing demand for original film and TV content has resulted in players targeting earlier stages of the production process. Now talent agencies, in both the U.K. and the U.S., are arriving earlier to the dance.

Ariana Grande and James Corden just took on a Titanic-sized task, performing a new 13-song soundtrack for the movie “Titanic” in one take.
The duo had to navigate nine sets to pull it off — it was all quite impressive. The whole thing ended with Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” the breakout original song from the 1997 movie.
Along the way, Grande and “The Late Late Show” host also performed songs from Hall & Oates, Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, One Direction, Vanilla Ice, and Rick Astley, among other (mostly) modern pop hits.

Doctor Who fans the world over owe Russell T. Davies a huge debt of gratitude. The writer brought the sci-fi series back to our screens in 2005 and transformed it into a modern, highly successful show that reached a far wider audience than the original run ever did. After five years in charge, though, he handed the keys to the Tardis over to his successor Steven Moffat and never returned to provide another episode.
Now, however, Davies has given us his first piece of Doctor Who fiction since 2010 in the form of a novelization of “Rose,” the pilot episode of the show starring Christopher Eccleston. The writer enjoyed the experience of getting to flex his prose muscles – he even had fun with predicting some future incarnations of the Doctor – but has made it clear that this hasn’t whet his whistle to return to the TV show proper.

Former showrunner Russell T. Davies has returned to the world of Doctor Who to adapt the first episode of his era of the series into a novel.
For those who don’t know, Davies is responsible for bringing the sci-fi icon back in 2005 and kickstarted its enormously successful 21st century run. And it all began with the pilot episode, titled “Rose,” which introduced us to Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor and Billie Piper’s companion.
In his new book based on the storyline, Davies has tweaked how things played out on TV in order to factor in what’s happened since on the show…. as well as predict what form the future might take. Specifically, one scene in the TV episode saw Rose meet Clive, an obsessive “fan” of the Doctor’s who’s collected pictures of Eccleston’s Time Lord throughout history.
