As one expansive, big-family ABC comedy door closes — adieu “Modern Family” — the window opens up to “Home Economics.” The new show, which on Friday got an official premiere date of April 7, centers on a trio of siblings, each in very different financial situations.
Tom (Topher Grace) is a middling novelist with dwindling readership, Sarah (Caitlin McGee) works with at-risk kids, and younger brother Connor (Jimmy Tatro) is set for life in a sprawling, emptier-than-usual mansion. They’re a tight-knit bunch, as are the various kids and spouses that make up the broader Hayworth family tree, including Sarah’s wife Denise (Sasheer Zamata). Another of the show’s hooks is that, aside from the interplay between the sibling’s families, Tom is working on a new novel based on them all.

“I’m very excited to be hosting ‘Card Sharks,’” said McHale. “Game winners can win tens of thousands of dollars and in an updated twist – losers will be fed to a pen of adult Tiger Sharks.”
The Card Sharks concept has been made into a series four separate times since its debut in 1978. The show originally ran on NBC from 1978 to 1981.
McHale was most recently seen in The Happy Time Murders, as well as Netflix’s A Futile and Stupid Gesture opposite Will Forte. McHale also recently hosted The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale on Netflix, a half-hour topical series that took a sharp, absurdist look at pop culture and news from across the globe.

Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to Home Economics, a single-camera family comedy form writers Michael Colton and John Aboud, producers Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (Two And A Half Men) and Lionsgate TV.
Written by Colton and Aboud, Home Economics, inspired by Colton’s family, uses sibling rivalry to explore the most taboo but also the most relatable of subjects: money. The series follows three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.
Colton and Aboud executive produce with Kim and Eric Tannenbaum via The Tannenbaum Company. Jason Wang is co-executive producer. Fox co-produces with The Tannenbaum Company and Lionsgate TV.
Home Economics is the latest sale The Tannenbaum Co. under its overall deal with Lionsgate TV. The list includes Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, an hourlong musical dramedy from Austin Winsberg, Paul Feig and Universal Music Group at NBC.

Brad Morris (Great News), Leah Harvey (On the Road), Jessica Hecht (Red Oaks) and Imogen Tear (When Calls the Heart) have been cast opposite Taylor Dearden and Aubrey Peoples in Hulu comedy pilot Search and Destroy, from Portlandia co-creator Carrie Brownstein and Annapurna Television.
Written and directed by Brownstein, Search and Destroy is loosely based on Brownstein’s best-selling memoir Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl. It’s centered around Karen Wolff (Dearden), a 22-year-old from the suburbs of the Pacific Northwest. Karen’s unstable childhood has left her feeling disconnected and like a perpetual outsider, so she attempts to find a sense of belonging through creativity and community. Set in the feminist and fiercely independent punk scene of the 1990s, Search and Destroy explores notions of identity, artistic and sexual awakenings, friendship and family. It is music however, and its transformative powers, that permeates and propels the story.

With “New Girl” wrapping up its final season, star Max Greenfield has signed on to join Taraji P. Henson in Paramount Players’ “What Men Want,” sources tell Variety.
Tracy Morgan is also on board to join the cast.
Variety first reported on Feb. 2 that Adam Shankman had signed on to direct the film, which is inspired by the Nancy Meyers 2000 rom-com “What Women Want.” Will Packer and James Lopez are producing and Shankman is executive producing.
The original movie starred Mel Gibson as a marketing exec who suddenly has the ability to hear what women are thinking after a freak accident. In the remake, the roles are reversed, with Henson playing a sports agent who has been constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When she gains the power to hear men’s thoughts, she is able to shift the paradigm to her advantage as she races to sign the NBA’s next superstar.

Elisabeth Moss is expected to be nominated at the Emmys this year for her lead performances in both the drama series “The Handmaid’s Tale” and the limited series “Top of the Lake: China Girl.” There have been 104 instances in Emmy history of someone receiving nominations in the same year for multiple performances, but only 11 have been with both nominated performances in lead categories. It has been five years since it last happened and it was actually Moss then too, in Best Drama Actress for “Mad Men” and Best Movie/Limited Actress for the first season of “Top of the Lake.” Click through our gallery above of the performers who have received simultaneous Emmy nominations for multiple lead roles.

For years Disneyland and Disney World have held a tradition since 1961 where high school students who are graduating get the entire theme park to themselves for one whole night. Having grown up in California, I was lucky enough to have that experience and it was an absolute blast! My friends and I had some fun and wacky adventures that night. It's definitely a lot more fun than prom!
Well, it turns out that Disney Studios is currently developing a film that is set during Grad Nite at Disney World. The news was revealed by David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer) while he was a guest on magician Penn Jillette's podcast Penn’s Sunday School. This is what Wain said about it:
"Somebody sent me a thing — Disney wants to do a thing where kids are stuck in Disney World on grad school night, and it’s like a teen [movie]."

Joel McHale is unleashed. The comedian’s new Netflix series “The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale” looks a bit like his long-running E! series “The Soup,” thanks to the green screen, the guest stars, and The Staffer Formerly Known As Mankini. But the new show comes armed with a secret weapon in executive producer Paul Feig, and a mandate to expand the scope beyond entertainment.
“We wanted to broaden the show,” McHale recently told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “E! always wanted me to keep it to entertainment news or entertainment and no sports or anything like that, and don’t get too weird. This allows us to go all over the place.”
McHale spent 11 years as host of “The Soup,” and kept it going even as his career exploded and he ended up starring in the late great comedy “Community.” But as management changed at E!, McHale...

Neither a pun-based title or hagiography, A Futile and Stupid Gesture follows the caustic rise of National Lampoon from Harvard to newspaper stands to radio, TV, and film. Henry Beard (Domhnall Gleeson) and Douglas Kenney (Will Forte) nurtured a new generation of comedians who found their way to Saturday Night Live, including Michael O’Donoghue (Thomas Lennon), the show’s first head writer. The Lampoon’s shenanigans were bankrolled by Matty Simmons (Matt Walsh), the American entrepreneur behind Weight Watchers.
We spoke Lennon and Walsh during this year’s Sundance Film Festival where the film debuted. The actors talk about competition between their comedy groups (Lennon was in The State and Walsh in the Upright Citizens Brigade), Walsh’s SAG awards speech for Veep and capturing the essence of O’Donoghue and Simmons.
For a majority of the conversation, the pair tackle National Lampoon’s un-p.C. humor and why...

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival and then available on Netflix practically the next day, the true-story-inspired comedy-drama (accent on the comedy) A Futile and Stupid Gesture recounts the life and high times of Doug Kenney, the now-nearly-forgotten co-founder of the seminal (accent on…never mind) humor magazine-cum-movie brand National Lampoon. Mostly incarnated by Will Forte (with assists from Martin Mull as an older version, and twins Frank and Morgan Gingerich as the 12-year-old Doug), Kenney comes across here as a classic biopic character: gifted, charismatic, original and audacious, but also a demon-ridden sometime asshole, especially to the women in his life....

Following last week’s Oscar nominations, Fox Searchlight’s “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” led the field of Oscar contenders. Both films showed healthy jumps over last weekend, with Guillermo del Toro’s showing the most strength.
While both films were outgrossed by 20th Century Fox’s “The Post” in much wider release, they did add around $21 million to their impressive totals so far. That’s far above boosts for last year’s “Hidden Figures” and “La La Land.”

The National Lampoon magazine was a little before my time. My introduction to the National Lampoon brand was the classic Chevy Chase comedy Vacation. That was one of the funniest damn films I had ever seen! After that, I got around to seeing Animal House and Caddyshack, which were so great! To this day I still enjoy watching these films because they never fail at making me laugh.
Director David Wain’s (Wet Hot American Summer) new film A Futile and Stupid Gesture gives us a fantastically funny and meta look at the early days of National Lampoon and tells the story of how it was all started by Doug Kenny, who is fantastically played by Will Forte and Henry Beard, was wonderfully played by Domhnall Gleeson. It also highlights the insane experiences they had while building this comedy empire.

It’s hard to overstate the impact of National Lampoon magazine, but director Douglas Tirola tried anyway in 2015 with “Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead,” a documentary examining its history and legacy. As much as David Wain’s “A Futile And Stupid Gesture” (premiering on Netflix January 26) might feel like a retread of its buoyant history lesson, his adaptation of Josh Karp’s book of the same name focuses primarily on the exploits of Lampoon co-founder Douglas Kenney, filtering the publication’s incendiary accomplishments through his suitably troubled personal history while assembling an impressive cast of contemporary comedy stars to provide some occasionally wildly...

It’s hard to talk about “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” — a somewhat funny and largely conventional movie about a very funny and wholly unconventional man — without talking about the film’s borderline-insane framing device. If you know absolutely nothing about “National Lampoon” co-founders Doug Kenney (Will Forte) and Henry Beard (Domhnall Gleeson), and would like to keep it that way until David Wain’s biopic can illuminate you on its own terms, consider this a reluctant spoiler warning. For everybody else… well, it’s certainly a choice.
Here’s the gist: Adapted from Josh Karp’s book of the same name, “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” retraces the true story of how two subversive Harvard grads took the road less traveled, started the most dangerous satirical magazine in American history, and became ground zero for a generation of comics that included the likes of Bill Murray and Gilda Radner.
