When I first moved to New York in 2017, I made a work friend who quickly became a close friend. One of the many things we bonded over was a shared love of John Travolta's lesser known movies. More specifically, I was impressed at how much joy my new friend was able to derive from the actor's career. I'd be lying if I said that joy stemmed from a genuine appreciation of the man's work, but I think he harbored a strange kind of respect for Travolta, as if any man who could put out "Look Who's Talking Now" or "Gotti" and still maintain some sort of career was deserving of admiration. As such, we planned a massive Travolta marathon which we sadly never got around to.
But if we ever did get around to taking a journey through the dregs of Travolta's career, Rotten Tomatoes might be a decent guide.

Zombies are among the most favorite horror creatures ever shown in movies. It’s something about those undead creatures that just continues inspiring the filmmakers and attracting fans. And it doesn’t matter how scary or unpleasant they look.
The zombie genre lives on its own, and it doesn’t lie within specific characteristics. It can be a horror movie, a thriller fantasy, but what's more interesting is when a zombie feature is actually a comedy.
There are many movies that make use of this combo, like Army of the Dead or Warm Bodies, but there’s one specific movie that, despite being released 20 years ago, still holds tha title of the best zombie comedy.
Yes, we are talking about Edgar Wright’s creation called Shaun of the Dead. With the perfect score of 92% on Rotten tomatoes, the movie is definitely a must watch for those who haven’t seen it,...

Zack Snyder’s early films proved him to be an interesting visionary who had a distinct style to his works. Grand visuals, the application of slow-mo sequences, and colorful imagery have been the main strengths and trademarks of a Snyder film. However, audiences have been divisive about his big screen DC films in the 2010s.
Zack Snyder’s DC tenure started with 2013’s Man of Steel
Considering the hit-or-miss nature of Snyder with audiences, the 2020s saw a big change in the director and where he puts his films. Starting from Army of the Dead, his films have only premiered on Netflix. This sudden downgrade from making big-budget studio films for the big screen to just releasing streaming films is surprising but a new report sheds light on how films are greenlit nowadays.

The first season of HBO’s True Detective series was a great addition to the prestige reputation of the brand’s ability to produce some of the best TV shows of all time. The show starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey was another acting showcase for the latter after he won the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club.
Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson in True Detective season 1
He was nominated for an Emmy for his incredible performance in the show. The second and third seasons however did not live up to the brilliance of the first season. Rotten Tomatoes and the Academy Awards don’t often go hand in hand. In fact, the Rt scores of Best Picture nominees/winners are a mixed bag. “Parasite” won Best Picture with a Rt score of 99% while “Green Book” emerged victorious with a score of just 77%. The site dishes out percentage scores to movie’s based on the film’s collection of critical reviews. The higher the score, the better the movie. Supposedly.
But, that’s not how it always work in tandem with the Oscars. For instance, “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Roma” all scored 96% but lost Best Picture to “Green Book.” Perhaps, if the Oscars listened to Rotten Tomatoes more, things would go a little more smoothly? Probably not but, just for fun, let’s pretend that Rotten Tomatoes are in charge of this year’s Academy Awards.

In a recent interview, Loki Season 2 writer Eric Martin responded to those who reacted negatively to the show's newest season, and of the MCU at large.
Summer 2023 saw the long-awaited Disney+ series Secret Invasion disappoint both fans and critics, becoming the McU's first show and third project to receive a "Rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes. As such, some fans feared that the McU's next project, Loki Season 2, would see a similar fate.
While many did love the new season, its Rotten Tomatoes score did not always reflect consistently reflect that throughout the show's run.

In a new, withering exposé about how easily Rotten Tomatoes, the popular review aggregator website, can be manipulated, it is revealed that a movie publicity firm called Bunker 15 paid for positive reviews for the 2018 Daisy Ridley movie “Ophelia.”
The firm paid critics $50 or more for each review, according to the New York Magazine/Vulture piece, which cited internal company emails and critics.
The pay-for-positive-reviews bit was part of a larger ploy – if the film garnered enough positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it would look more appealing to a potential distributor. They would also persuade writers to encourage Rotten Tomatoes that mixed reviews receive a “positive” distinction on the site. They also somehow made it so that negative reviews of the movie weren’t counted.
As for the fate of “Ophelia,” a month after it was certified “fresh” IFC Films announced it had acquired the film for distribution in the United States.

Rotten Tomatoes is often used as an indicator of what movie you want to watch next. A certified fresh score can entice viewers while a rotten grade may make you stay away. Or do Oscars voters disagree with critics?

The mega-budget movie bubble is seeing some imploding this year, with summer tentpoles sporting highly recognizable IP names taking some blows at the box office. Meanwhile, mid-budget movies that seem like riskier ventures are enjoying modest success. One film that straddles the line is the fifth entry in the popular Insidious series. Insidious: The Red Door continues the scares and capitalizes on a loyal audience fanbase looking for good old-fashioned horror fun.
Deadline is reporting that the Thursday preview numbers for Insidious: The Red Door is doing such good business that it nearly locked out Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the box office last night. The James Wan-produced horror sequel is helmed by the film’s star Patrick Wilson and boasts an epic conclusion to the story. Renfield makeup artist Christien Tinsley has revealed the extreme lengths Nicolas Cage went to, to play Dracula.
In the new movie by director Chris McKay, Cage plays the vampire, while Nicholas Hoult portrays the title character, Dracula’s long-suffering assistant and henchman.
In an interview with Variety, Tinsley revealed they used 3D printing to craft Dracula’s famous fangs.
“This was the first film that I know of where we used 3D printing to do all the dentures,” Tinsley said. “We jumped in headfirst with 3D printing. We would scan Nic’s teeth and digitally sculpt them.”
Once the fake teeth were made, “We shaved Nic’s teeth down and the dentures were fitted so as not to impede on Nic’s speech and allow full freedom,” he said.

Another high profile sequel has turned in a solid opening weekend at the box office as Paramount/Spyglass’ “Scream VI” has scored a $44.5 million domestic launch this weekend from 3,675 theaters.

Seth Rogen has gotten plenty of good reviews throughout his career – a look at his Rotten Tomatoes page shows a lot more red (good) than bad (green) – but the bad ones really sting. During a recent appearance on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, the multi-hyphenate creator opened up about self-doubt and how negative press affects him and other creative people. He said that he experiences self-doubt when “a cultural institution tells everyone that I suck.” Asked by host Steven Bartlett if that kind of criticism hurts, Rogen replied, “Oh yeah! Of course. It hurts everyone. Yes. Very much so.”
“I think if most critics knew how much it hurt the people that made the things that they are writing about, they would second guess the way they write these things,” Rogen continued. “It’s devastating. I know people who never recover from it, honestly. Years, decades of being hurt...

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was released a little over a week ago, but the reviews… haven’t exactly been kind, which took screenwriter Jeff Loveness by surprise.
“To be honest, those reviews took me by surprise,” Jeff Loveness told The Daily Beast in an interview. “I was in a pretty low spot… Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the …?’” Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania joins Eternals as the only two Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that have earned a Rotten Tomatometer status on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite those negative reviews being a little crushing, Jeff Loveness remains proud of his work. “I’m really proud of what I wrote for Jonathan [Majors] and Michelle Pfeiffer,” Loveness said. “I thought that was good stuff, you know? And so I was just despondent, and I was really sad about it.“

The mixed reception to Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is taking a greater toll on its box office than anticipated. The film grossed just $8.2 million on its second Friday — a colossal 82% drop from its $46.4 million opening day — and its weekend total is projected to drop 71% from $106 million last weekend to $30 million this weekend.
If that number holds, “Quantumania” will have suffered the largest second weekend percentage drop of any Marvel Studios release and any superhero film with a domestic opening weekend of over $100 million.
While hardcore fans turned out as they reliably do on opening weekend and have boosted the film’s audience Rotten Tomatoes score to 84%, the B CinemaScore grade and 3.5/5 PostTrak score suggested that casual audience interest would drop as it did for DC’s “Black Adam” last year. But these weekend totals are below the $35-38 million that analysts had predicted and suggest that “Quantumania...

Evangeline Lilly revealed that Hugh Jackman tried to persuade her to join an X-Men movie while the pair were filming Real Steel (2011) – Shawn Levy’s sci-fi about robot boxing.
Lilly later joined the Ant-Man franchise as Hope van Dyne (Aka Wasp) and reprises her role in the series’ third instalment Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, out 17 February.
Lilly recalled the anecdote while promoting the movie on Josh Horowitz’s popular Happy Sad Confused podcast.
“[Jackman] was like, ‘Hey, so, the X-Men guys are asking me if I would approach you because they know that you won’t talk to anybody, and won’t do anything, and you’re not reading scripts, and no one can reach you,” she said.
“‘They knew I was working with you and were interested to know if it would ever interest you to do an X-Men thing.’

The Kang Dynasty is upon us. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the latest effort by the moneymaking machine of Marvel Studios; however, the newest entry and start of the next phase is not aiming to hit Spider-Man levels of box office gross. Variety is reporting that the Paul Rudd-led franchise is aiming for a 95 million to 100 million debut for its opening weekend domestically and 255 million for the global take.
The Ant-Man franchise has been one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more humble hits, but it is predicted to claim the number one spot at the box office with ease, overtaking last week’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance. At the international box office, the third movie of the Ant-Man trilogy is expected to make 35 million to 55 million at the China market, which is a big one for Hollywood blockbusters. Channing Tatum is looking at another opening at No. 1 in his canon of February theatrical releases with the Warner Bros Steven Soderbergh directed threequel Magic Mike’s Last Dance with industry estimates between 9M-11M at 1,500 theaters. Warner Bros is not reporting numbers. Friday is around 4.3M which includes an estimated 1M previews that started at 5Pm. The pic is squarely aimed at women over Super Bowl weekend, a time when box office falls on Sunday.
While this is the second title Warner Bros is pivoting from HBO Max to an exclusive theatrical release after New Line’s House Party, there’s a lot of intrigue in regards to how far this branded movie can go in its limited release of 1,500 locations. On the low-end, the pic’s weekend opening would be higher than the Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson theatrical-day-and-date Universal romantic comedy from a year ago, Marry Me (7.9M). At the high end,...

For the first time in nearly two months, the No. 1 film on the weekend box office charts is not “Avatar: The Way of Water. The new top film is Universal and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” with a 14.2 million opening weekend.
The horror film starring Dave Bautista is hitting the very low end of pre-release projections for an opening in the mid-to-high teens and is the lowest domestic opening ever for a Shyamalan film. With a reported 20 million budget financed by Shyamalan, “Knock at the Cabin” should be able to easily get into the black over the course of February, but it’s not likely to leg out particularly well at the box office with a C on CinemaScore to go with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 68 critics and 64 audience.

After another disappointing weekend with some record low numbers, we’re moving deeper into September with a movie that has been all the talk of the town long before it premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Labor Day. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” is being released by Warner Bros. into 4,000 or more theaters on Friday after premiering at the festival earlier in the month. The anticipated second feature as a director from Wilde after 2019’s “Booksmart” stars Florence Pugh (“Black Widow”) and pop mega-star Harry Styles, who has been involved in a tabloid-teasing relationship with his director for over a year.
Although the plot for the thriller has been kept somewhat secretive, the trailer shows it to be a ‘50s era suburban thriller involving women living idyllically as housewives while their husbands work on a mysterious project that looms over them all.

Along with its promising 19 million opening at the box office, Sony/eOne’s “The Woman King” achieved something that only a precious few films do every year: The Viola Davis historical action film earned an A+ from audiences polled by CinemaScore, winning over moviegoers the same way it won over critics with a 94 Rotten Tomatoes score.
There’s only one other film this year that has earned an A+ on CinemaScore, and that’s the year’s biggest box office hit, Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick.” The two films couldn’t be more different. Describing the premise of Los Espookys, HBO’s wackiest sitcom and its first primarily Spanish-language original series, is easy enough. A ragtag group of friends start a business where they stage fake supernatural events for people who pay them. In the first episode, released three years ago, the team are hired by an older priest losing favour with his congregation to a younger cleric with great hair and glossy lips. Elizabeth Meriwether’s show about Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes (played by Amanda Seyfried) rolled out more recently than any of its competitors (March-April 2022) and is tied for the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of the lot (89 percent). Its six nominations include two for directing and one for writing, but it earned just one acting nom (for Seyfried).

This weekend’s new releases are meeting their pre-release projections, with Sony/Columbia’s action comedy “Bullet Train” earning 12.6 million from 4,357 locations on opening day — including 4.6 million from previews — and is now estimated for a 30 million box office opening.
Prior to release, trackers had projected a 26-33 million launch driven by a predominantly male audience for the R-rated film starring Brad Pitt. While critics have been mixed with a 55 Rotten Tomatoes score, audience reception has been better with a B+ on CinemaScore, 4/5 on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 81.
But “Bullet Train” faces a difficult road to profitability with its reported 90 million budget, and a lack of serious competition for the rest of August may not be enough to allow the film to leg out past the break-even point unless it gets support from the international box office.

Sony’s Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt, saw 4.6M in Thursday previews which began at 3pm at 3,596 locations. The pic is estimated to bring in around 30M this weekend as summer’s last big tentpole.
Interesting to note, though not necessarily a comp since it was branded IP, is that Bullet Train from director David Leitch had previews that were not that far from what his Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw posted back in early August 2019, that being 5.8M.
Next to late summer Thursday previews, Bullet Train is ahead of The Meg‘s Thursday and also last year’s The Suicide Squad at 4.1M (even though that latter title was day and date on HBO Max and saw a start of 26.2M).
Critics are sour on Bullet Train at 53 on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences love it more at 83 on Rt.

As the summer winds down, the stream of major franchise films has dried up, but there are still a few high profile releases left to beef up the box office and hopefully keep the overall weekend grosses above 100 million for another three weeks. The biggest of these titles is Nope, the latest horror film from Jordan Peele, who is one of the few brand-name directors in the business. With the Universal film a sure shot for the top slot, the studio should have four films in the top ten this weekend, with Minions: The Rise of Gru likely in third place and The Black Phone and Jurassic World Dominion towards the end of the list.
The UFO-themed Nope, which opens in 3,700 theaters, stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun (all Peele alum in some capacity) as horse ranchers/wranglers and a theme park owner respectively who witness some mysterious...

It’s another blowout this week as Thor: Love and Thunder brought in 46 million, trouncing the new competition in its second weekend and bringing its total to 233 million domestic and 498 million worldwide. While these are undoubtedly strong numbers, it isn’t all good news for the 29th MCU film, as its 68 drop was one of the steepest falls the franchise has seen. The ten day cume is still the best yet for a Thor solo film, but it seems that the relatively so-so word of mouth on this, as signified by its B+ CinemaScore compared to its predecessor Thor: Ragnarok’s, is hurting the box office.
Are audiences tiring of the MCU brand? Thor 4 is the fourth film in the franchise to drop greater than 65 in its second weekend, and all four of those titles have been from roughly the past year. On top of that, the past year has...

Tom Hooper’s big-screen version of “Cats” is continuing to cough up hairballs at the box office — with outside estimates of Universal’s total losses on the musical ranging from $71 million to $100 million.
After 10 days in theaters, the pricey adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s London and Broadway hit has grossed only $38.4 million worldwide. Overall, box office analysts tell TheWrap that they expect “Cats” to finish deep in the red with a total domestic run of $40 million and a worldwide gross that would be lucky to reach $100 million — a devastating return considering the film’s reported budget of $95 million, before marketing costs.
With that result, the total gross for “Cats” would be more than 75% below the domestic and global totals of Fox’s 2017 musical hit “The Greatest Showman” and roughly a quarter of what Lionsgate’s Oscar-winning musical “La La Land” made the year before.
