Final Destination inspires yet another throwaway teen schlocker, this time with an increasingly risible astrological bent
As many of us impatiently wait for the sixth Final Destination film, slated for release next year over a decade since the fifth, here comes yet another limp attempt to recreate that specific, sadistic form of magic. Some curse, some teens, some shock deaths, a formula that’s been trotted out in so-what films like Wish Upon, Countdown and Truth or Dare, shrugs where shocks should be, franchise starters ending after the first round.
Which brings us to Tarot, a film wisely kept from critics until the very last second and one that audiences would be smart to keep themselves from too. It’s not quite as bad as these things can often be but flashes of competence are not enough to distract from a sense of crushing pointlessness, more watery slop served up...

Josephine Langford is most well known for playing college student Tessa Young in the "After" movies. The franchise, which is inspired by Anna Todd's best-selling book series of the same name, chronicles Tessa's tumultuous relationship with Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) - a mysterious bad boy with a dark past. The first film, which premiered in 2019, catapulted Langford to fame. Now, years later, Langford has officially said goodbye to Tessa following the release of the final "After" installment "After Everything," which premiered on Sept. 13.

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.
Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

When you're making a horror film that features a gimmick about a person or a deadly object, it seems almost inevitable that the concept of your idea is bound to draw comparisons from the greats. "Wish Upon" asks if you took the concepts of "Hellraiser" and "The Monkey's Paw," but entrusted the power to a high school girl. By all means, that sounds like a fun concept for a horror movie, but the execution left a lot to be desired.
In "Wish Upon," Joey King's Clare is your typical high school outcast. She's gifted a Chinese music box by her dumpster-diving father (Ryan Phillippe), initially unaware of its powers. After making an offhand comment about wanting a bully of hers to rot, the bully shows up to school the next day looking like she had. It's soon revealed that the box holds seven wishes for whoever comes across it, but...

‘American Horror Stories’ offers its unique take on a classic trope, but thin characters and predictable plotting result in a shattered episode.
“You light a candle in a room and then you say her name three times…”
There’s a natural shorthand that exists with creepy characters like Bloody Mary that have become omnipresent in pop culture. Not only are most American Horror Story audiences aware of Bloody Mary’s urban legend, but there’s been a demand to see her worked into the series for some time now. The twisted “monkey’s paw” logic that accompanies Bloody Mary and similar specters is ripe material for the horror genre to explore and low-rent Blumhouse material like Wish Upon or Truth or Dare (or Shudder’s Kandisha) do exactly that. American Horror Stories finally finds a suitable story to explore this staple, but “Bloody Mary” is arguably the weakest application of this premise.

There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

What is about having more that makes so many people forget what they already have? While Joey King is no stranger to the horror genre, Blumhouse's The Lie, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Oct. 6, is a new chapter for her - unlike her previous horror movies, there's nothing supernatural about it. In the film, King stars as Kayla, a teenage girl still reeling from her parents divorce who makes a lethal mistake, which ultimately costs her everything she holds dear. However, The Lie isn't just Kayla's story; it's also about the extreme lengths that parents - played here by Peter Sarsgaard and Mireille Enos - will go to protect their children.

When it comes to horror, King is typically the victim rather than the "evil" mastermind. With The Conjuring and Wish Upon, there is something supernaturally sinister at work, but with The Lie, things are much more realistic.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights Sean Cisterna’s dramatic feature From the Vine for a PVOD and digital release this fall. The movie, written by Willem Wennekers, and adapted from Ken Cancellara’s novel Finding Marco, follows Mark Gentile (Joe Pantoliano), an attorney and automotive company executive, who travels to Italy after a major humiliation in business. He returns to the tiny village of Acerenza, visiting the vineyard where he grew up and finds it in a state of disrepair. Mark gets an idea to bring the overgrown property back to life and start producing wine again. Mark convinces various denizens of Acerenza, each with their own comedic personality, to aid him in this seemingly impractical effort, promising everyone a share in the business if it is successful. Concerned about his sudden and lengthy trip, Mark is joined by his wife Marina, and his twenty-something daughter, Laura,...

Stars: Michael Welch, Lin Shaye, Tony Todd, Melissa Bolona, Spenser Locke, Kaiwi Lyman, Jonathan Daniel Brown, Jean Elie, Christopher Murray, Douglas Tait, Larry Poole | Written by Jeffrey Reddick, William Halfon, Jonathan Doyle | Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr.
Pretty much my whole reason for giving The Final Wish a watch was because Lin Shaye stars in it. She is a seal of approval for me and I know that even if the movie disappoints, then I will at least see a good performance from the veteran actress. That said, this also features Tony Todd, another reliable horror icon and had some decent-looking poster artwork, so it had at least a few things going for it.
The Final Wish has a simple concept. After his Dad dies, a man (Michael Welch) heads back to the place he grew up to see his Mum (Shaye). While he is there he discovers a mysterious...

Actress Oona Chaplin, who is set to appear in the forthcoming Avatar sequels, has been tapped to star in Lullaby, a horror feature from Alcon Entertainment. John R. Leonetti, who has directed films in the same genre such as Annabelle, Wish Upon, and most recently the Netflix original, The Silence, has signed on to direct Lullaby, which will begin production in Toronto next month.
Based on the mythological figure Lilith, the film is rooted in folklore and follows a new mother who discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith.
Alex Greenfield and Ben Powell wrote the screenplay. Alcon’s co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are producing with Envision Media Arts Lee Nelson and David Tish. Carl Rogers and...

‘The Silence’ Trailer: Flying Monsters Are Hunting Kiernan Shipka and Stanley Tucci by Sound — Watch
“The Silence” is capitalizing on the latest trend for post-apocalyptic stories with creatures that prey on humans by curtailing basic functions. First there was “A Quiet Place,” in which John Krasinski and Emily Blunt had to evade blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. Then came the Netflix movie “Bird Box,” where Sandra Bullock had to blindfold herself so that she could avoid looking at creatures with the ability to drive a person to suicide.
Now, Netflix is combining all of these elements and throwing in some of its go-to stars for an extra synergistic push. In the movie, flying critters who kind of look like bats have destroyed the world by going after humans if they make any sound. That’s a familiar premise! The film also pulls from its Netflix stable of stars, including “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” actors Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto and “To...

If you haven't already heard of it, Hulu's The Act may be your next true crime obsession. Premiering on March 20, the anthology series debuts with a case about Dee Dee Blanchard, a seemingly devoted mother, and her daughter Gypsy Rose, who she claims suffers from a slew of illnesses. The mother-daughter bond eventually deteriorates and ends with murder. Dee Dee will be played by Patricia Arquette, who's fresh off of her role from Ben Stiller's Escape From Dannemora.
Starring across her as Gypsy Rose is none other than Joey King. That said, you might not recognize this popular young actress at first due to her dramatic transformation on the show - which even involved her shaving her head.

Grief is front and center in Timothy Woodward Jr.’s The Final Wish, a cautionary tale about the dangers of wish fulfillment centered around a struggling lawyer named Aaron (Michael Welch) who just wants to do right by everyone. And because this is a horror movie we’re talking about here, wanting good things for those you love often can come with a hefty price tag attached. Aaron quickly realizes that you often need bad to balance out the good in life, and his good deeds result in some devastating outcomes, proving that even good intentions can go horribly awry.
When we’re introduced to Aaron in The Final Wish, he’s just been rejected during another job interview, he no longer has a place to live because he hasn’t been able to pay his rent, and a call from Lisa (Melissa Bolona), a former flame who informs him...

I've got a trailer here for you to watch for a fantastic-looking teenage coming-of-age film called Summer '03. I've actually heard good things about this movie and I'm looking forward to checking it out.
The film stars Joey King in the role of 16-year-old Jamie. The film is based on the true-life events of Jamie and her extended family "who are left reeling after her calculating grandmother (June Squibb) unveils an array of family secrets on her deathbed. Jamie is left to navigate her nascent love life and maintain her closest friendships in the midst of this family crisis."
The film was written and directed by Becca Gleason and also stars Andrea Savage (Veep), Paul Scheer (The League), Jack Kilmer (The Nice Guys) and Erin Darke (Good Girls Revolt). Summer ’03 is set to hit theaters September 28th.

It was only a matter of time before some major studio made a movie out of Slender Man, the frightening internet meme about a faceless, gaunt and betentacled specter who kidnaps children and also loves photobombs. He seems tailor-made for classic Hollywood boogeyman status, with a distinctive character design, a creepy gimmick and a pre-ordained cinematic style, which dictates he must always be looming in the background, like the killers in “The Strangers” but with a better tailor.
Sylvain White’s “Slender Man” was not worth the wait. The film takes what might be the most fascinating 21st century horror monster and does almost nothing with him. It’s slow, it’s boring, and it’s not scary. The horror in “Slender Man” could be easily replicated… for free… at home… by turning off the lights and playing atonal violin music on your laptop.

Hazily atmospheric “Moss” chronicles the 18th birthday of its titular rural youth, to whom the 36 hours or so depicted end up seeming quite eventful — though viewers may find them less so. Daniel Peddle’s indie drama has a handsome hero and attractive photography of the coastal North Carolina locations, but isn’t quite arresting enough in mood or style to sustain a feature so slight in story terms. Still, this is no failure, but a nice slice-of-life miniature that falls a bit short, suggesting its writer-director (whose prior efforts were mostly documentaries) is just another film or two away from more expertly combining a meditative tenor with narrative content.
Pleasure Island, just off North Carolina’s southernmost coast, is home to teenage only child Moss (Mitchell Slaggert) and his father Ray (Billy Ray Suggs). The latter makes a living crafting sculptures from driftwood, a profession his son scoffs at — though...

While gaps between classic horror films and their sequels have tested fans’ patience in the past, it’s hard to imagine anyone eagerly waiting for a follow-up to The Strangers. The sub-par bag-head home invasion horror from 2008 had the privilege of being granted a theatrical run back in the day but seemed unlikely to spawn a sequel then, let alone ten years later. What’s more surprising than a belated follow-up being green lit, is that it’s also debuting in cinemas and not being banished to online screening platforms or supermarket bargain bins next to VHS rips of Jeff Speakman’s Timelock or Wild Fishing with Henry Gilbey.

For Truth or Dare, Jeff Wadlow infuses the titular game for youngins with something of a supernatural bent that often ventures into a territory that is often borderline goofy, but I still couldn’t help but admire the film’s total commitment to its rather audacious concept. It’s really not a cinematic experience intended for those of us who happen to be born before 1995, so for all intents and purposes, I think Truth or Dare mostly hits its mark for those it was made for. And yes, even though the film does have a few silly moments, it also has two truly inspired set pieces that were downright brilliantly conceived that I enjoyed immensely.
Truth or Dare introduces us to a version of the titular activity where those who begin playing must adhere to the demands of the game as the stakes are continually raised, and if they do...

Jeff Wadlow’s Truth Or Dare is an inconsequential brand of horror likened to Stiles White’s Ouija or more recently John R. Leonetti’s Wish Upon. The production company behind Get Out and Happy Death Day has another hit on its hands with this Final Destination-lite shocker
Given the current obsession with reboots, revisits and rehashes, it’s strange that the Final Destination franchise hasn’t cheated death and been dragged back to life after five films and $665m in the bank. It’s even stranger given that its legacy has been haunting lesser pretenders in the past year from the incompetent shlock of Wish Upon to the snappy, if throwaway, slashery of Happy Death Day. Blumhouse, the phenomenally successful company behind the latter (last year also saw them turn Get Out and Split into global smashes) is now hoping to milk yet more money from the death-heavy formula with Truth or Dare, a slick college-set horror.

Screen Gems has released the first trailer and poster for the upcoming Slender Man horror movie. The legend of Slender Man has been around for some time and I'm surprised it took so long to get a feature film made. The movie was directed by Sylvain White (Stomp The Yard, The Losers) and it actually looks like it could be pretty creepy! Since I have a fascination with these kinds of urban legends, I'm kinda looking forward to checking this out.
For those of you not familiar with the legend, the character came from a Photoshop challenge on the Something Awful forums. The challenge tasked users to take boring or dull photos and add a nightmarish element too them. The Slender Man idea came from the mind of Eric Knudsen a.k.a. "Victor Surge," who posted a couple photos of children with a tall suited figure standing in the background.
