Steven Spielberg was associated with a dinosaur film even before Jurassic Park came out in 1993. While the legendary filmmaker revolutionized cinema with the incredible dinosaur franchise, it was not his first time in the genre. He also acted as a producer in the 1988 animated film The Land Before Time.
Despite being a fun-filled animated dinosaur film for kids, The Land Before Time spoke on some mature topics like homelessness. However, if it was not for Spielberg, the film was also about to carry a more violent and darker tone, unlike a traditional children’s film.
A still from The Land Before Time I Amblin Entertainment
Some of the saddest sequences in films like The Lion King and Up have proven that even animated films come with loads of emotions and tearful scenes. But Steven Spielberg felt that the villain in The Land Before Time was becoming too scary to be in a children’s movie.

If you're a fan of the "Transformers" franchise, you've seen some epic battles. They've taken place all over the world, from Stonehenge to the Great Wall of China to the pyramids of Giza. We've seen these robots in disguise fight it out with each other everywhere. The lore is important (the franchise has been around since 1984) to fans, and so are the characters: their look, their speech, and their interaction. There are CGI characters talking with humans ... the whole thing is complicated.
The most recent film, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" has just hit DVD, Blu-ray, and digital, meaning that we're getting a deeper look at how the film was made in the special features. In one of them, director Steven Caple Jr. is shooting a scene in Peru, when he gets a visit by Michael Bay. Bay, of course, directed the first five films in the seven-film series (so...

Mitski’s seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has arrived. Stream the album below. Update: To coincide with the album’s release, Mitski has also shared a new video for “My Love Mine All Mine.”
Spanning 11 tracks, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We features many of the things you would expect from a Mitski album, like production from longtime-collaborator, Patrick Hyland, thoughtful songwriting, and brilliant moments of catharsis. Yet, focusing on the inescapable contradiction of love and isolation, she reaches some of her most profound musings, with impactful arrangements to match the mood.
In his review, Consequence’s Jonah Krueger celebrated the project for being Mitski’s “most comforting, hopeful yet.” Explaining that she finds solace in the heartache of loss, Krueger writes that the overarching theme of the album endows the listener with invaluable emotional tools, and looks past sorrow to find strength.

Erykah Badu re-wrote and re-recorded her hit song “Tyrone” for Netflix’s new movie “They Cloned Tyrone,” per a request from the film’s director Juel Taylor.
“Everybody I’ve ever talked to, as soon as I told them the [movie’s] title, they were like, ‘So Erykah Badu doing the song?’ and I’m like, ‘Trust me, I’m trying.’” Taylor said, describing the early stages of developing “They Cloned Tyrone,” which is his feature film directorial debut and stars Teyonah Parris, John Boyega and Jamie Foxx. At the time, he hoped he would be able to include a reimagined version of the Grammy-winner’s song.
“You don’t really think it’s going to happen,” Taylor said. “Serendipitously enough, I was able to pitch it to her, and she responded immediately. Thank God for Erykah Badu.”

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts triggers a frisson not uncommon to happily mindless franchise movies. It exudes the energy of talented filmmakers trying to wring something creative, unique, or, heaven forbid, human, from a generic template, or trying to sneak just a little bit of flavor into the boxed mix. This palpable effort makes Beasts watchable on a moment-to-moment basis. It has talented actors, Dominique Fishback and Anthony Ramos, doing their best to interact with green-screen concoctions. It has a sense of humor. It has a Nineties hip-hop soundtrack put...

Steven Caple Jr. is known for grounded, character-focused stories about the sort of people you might run into every day, without a giant robot fight in sight. Films like The Land and A Different Tree. Even his most recent film, Creed II, only features fights on a decidedly human scale. But Paramount believed this made him the perfect name to take over the core Transformers franchise after Michael Bay’s departure.
“They wanted me to bring that grit and character from my dramas to make people feel for these robots but keep the action and adrenaline high,” Caple recalls.

Caple was already a lifelong fan of the franchise, but unlike many fans, his love of Transformers began not with the toys but the animated 1986 movie.
“That was my first introduction to it.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. isn’t afraid to pick up the phone and ask for guidance. He did it on Creed II when he asked Ryan Coogler and Sylvester Stallone for insight into how best to make a movie in the world of Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) and Rocky Balboa. So, naturally, Caple took the same approach with the mastermind of Transformers live-action movies, Michael Bay.
During prep, Caple reached out to Bay who made the time for the young director despite having his hands full with Ambulance.
“[Michael Bay] was making Ambulance at the time, but he still picked up the phone and hopped onto Zoom,” Caple tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Monday through Friday, I was prepping for the film, and Saturday, Sunday, I was learning a lot from the visual effects supervisor and calls with Michael Bay. A year and a half after Michael K. Williams’ death, the man who sold The Wire star the drugs that killed him has pleaded guilty.
“Irvin Cartagena sold fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York said Wednesday, regarding the the September 5, 2021 transaction in Brooklyn’s South Williamsburg neighborhood. “In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams.”
In front U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams earlier in the day, Cartagena pleaded guilty to “one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl analogue, fentanyl, and heroin.” That plea specifically cited the death of Williams as a consequence of Cartagena’s drug slinging. Set to be sentenced later this year, Cartagena, aka “Green Eyes,” faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 40 years on the charges.

It’s been nearly 50 years since a southpaw from Philly went the distance with Apollo Creed. Back then it was a genuinely euphoric moment in cinema, so feel-good that Rocky over-performed at the box office and Oscars, beating out flicks like Network and Taxi Driver for Best Picture, and making Sylvester Stallone one of the biggest movie stars of his generation. Yet even the most elated audiences could scarcely predict how long a tail Balboa’s left hook would have.
Forty-six years on, the legacy of Rocky and Apollo grows with nine films and counting, including six Rocky movies and three Creed films, the latter about Apollo’s son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan). And as time passed, many of the installments have become as synonymous with their eras as, well, Rocky is with the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Hence we here at Den of Geek have put...

This review of “Emergency” was first published Jan. 20, 2022, after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
To walk the world knowing that you are presumed a threat is the harrowing burden at the heart of “Emergency.” That appalling reality sets three young men of color on a nightmarishly nerve-racking drive, for taking the socially acceptable right course of action in a dire situation could endanger not only their future academic prospects but also their lives.
Walking a thematic line about the racial biases that plague America’s institutions and society at large akin to other such recent indie productions as “Blindspotting,” “The Land” or “Monsters and Men,” the sophomore effort from director Carey Williams (whose debut “R#J” was a social-media take on “Romeo and Juliet”) strikes a difficult equilibrium between its disquieting observations and comedic inclinations.

"Hey, is that real? She couldn't be." So says Sean Thornton (John Wayne) in John Ford's The Quiet Man (1952). The "that," the "she" in question is Maureen O'Hara's red-headed, red-skirted Mary Kate Danaher. He catches sight of her in the long space of lighting a cigarette as she passes by shepherding a flock of sheep through the idyllic Irish countryside. Her vibrant redness appears with such Technicolor glory that we may feel the same––has there ever been a red so seemingly unreal against nature's sprawling green?"Red is more durable," the Rev. Cyril Playfair (Arthur Shields) comments on the door of Sean Thornton's refurbished cottage "White O'Morn," which he has painted green––emerald green, a shade "only an American would have thought of." That is the remark of the Reverend's wife, who admires it as looking the way Irish cottages should "and seldom do." Sean Thornton spent...

Steven Caple Jr., the director of 2018’s “Creed II,” is being eyed to direct the next film in the “Transformers” franchise for Paramount and Hasbro Studios, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
Caple Jr., who is not yet in negotiations for the job, would direct the follow-up to “Bumblebee” as part of the revamped “Transformers” universe of films following Michael Bay’s original franchise.
