The hype for The Righteous, actor Mark O’Brien’s feature debut as a writer and director, was certainly being cranked up to eleven ahead of its premiere at this years’ Fantasia. The festival’s publicity going as far as comparing it to Night of the Hunter and Passolini’s Teorema before saying it was “destined to become a Canadian horror classic”.
Those kinds of claims raise some high expectations. The kind of expectations that are hard for any film, let alone a debut feature, to live up to. The kind that can hurt a film that’s good, even excellent, but not a new masterpiece. Can The Righteous live up to the claims being made for it?
Shot in stunning black and white, The Righteous begins at the sparsely attended funeral of the daughter of Frederic and Ethel Mason.

When most people think of casinos, whether online or land-based, the first thing that pops into their minds is slot machines. This is because slot games are the most popular game in casinos worldwide. They are also believed to be responsible for 70% of casino profits. In an attempt to make the most of this, developers have over the years resorted to coming up with unique aesthetics to make their sites the place to be. Slot themes are a huge part of the game and greatly influence its popularity and gameplay.
These themes not only make the game look good but more interesting and interactive. The themes are visible in the game symbols, scatters and wilds making it easy for players to understand the principles of the game and making wins more fun. Over the years, slots have adopted many themes but some have managed to stand out and make an...

This week, we have another great group of home media releases on tap that has a little something for fans of both new and old horror. Pennywise and the kids from Derry come home on Tuesday with It Chapter Two, as it’s being released on multiple formats, and if you’re in the mood for some ambitious sci-fi, be sure to check out Freaks, too (Bruce Dern is a delight!).
In terms of genre classics, Scream Factory has put together an incredible box set with their The Fly Collection, and they’re also showing some love to The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas (1957) and Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde as well.
Other releases for December 10th include Viy, Along Came the Devil II, The Tombs, The Wrath, and The Curse of Buckout Road.

There seems to be endless low budget horror with titles like the one above (and I have watched many!). ‘The Curse of…’ or ‘The Haunting of…’ and it’s always 50/50 on the quality so I generally go in with low expectations.
I will say right off the bat that The Curse of Buckout Road exceeded those expectations. Buckout Road is ‘the most haunted road in America’ and the movie covers some of the myths, legends, ghosts and folklore that apparently haunt the road. There’s plenty on show and I’m sure plenty more if they were needed for a sequel. A group of young people start to think that these myths might...

Buckout Road is an upcoming indie horror feature. From first time director Matthew Currie Holmes, the film is a throwback to classic good vs. evil horror films of the '80s. In the film, several college students realize that the urban legends, on Buckout Road, are true. This title stars Dominique Provost-Chalkley (The Seasoning House, 2012), Danny Glover, Michelle Mylette and many others. A trailer was released earlier this year. Now, a couple of upcoming film festival dates have been announced. The trailer is a good one. It flashes back and forth across timelines as characters discover the area's haunted past. The clip also blends the religious with the supernatural, in this chilling clip. Buckout Road will have a couple of showings, in October. The next showing takes place on October 7th, in Nashville, Tennessee. Then, there will be another showing, in Toronto, on October 13th. This showing takes place as...
