As a movie lover, one of the most wonderful pleasures of this passion is discovering new filmmakers with their own identity, style, and message. There’s almost always something special about a feature film debut from an unknown director, but when it’s from a highly popular actor with an overwhelmingly positive public opinion, the expectations surrounding the movie inevitably change. Dev Patel directs, writes – along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai) – produces, and stars in Monkey Man, whose story described as “John Wick in Mumbai” was deemed too heavy for the Indian audience by Netflix, prompting Jordan Peele (Get Out) to watch it, buy it, and give it a theatrical release window, so impressed he was.

Isekai , noun: "A Japanese genre of science or fantasy fiction featuring a protagonist who is transported to or reincarnated in a different, strange, or unfamiliar world. Also: an anime, manga, video game, etc., in this genre. Frequently as a modifier." The Oxford English Dictionary, the definitive record of the English language, officially recognized the popular loan-word interpretation of 'isekai' in its March 2024 batch of new additions announced today. The update included other Japanese concepts, such as omotenashi and kintsugi , as well as several Japanese food items like okonomiyaki and onigiri . Fan service , with specific reference to anime and manga, tokusatsu and mangaka were also added. Fans of other countries' cultures can rejoice, as well, since the latest tri-monthly update throws in just as many Australian concepts, such as speccy , chicken salt and Aussieness itself, along with eight Bible-related terms. It’s rare to find a game as overwhelming in its technical mastery as Japanese developer Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord. Not technical in the sense of production value (though the game is no slouch in that regard), but in its mechanical design. It’s a tactical RPG whose real-time battles you play from a top-down perspective and can be freely paused so you can issue commands. Those battles play out as brief side-on cutscenes with two units (squads consisting of one-to-six individual characters) launching attacks at each other in sequence, and they’re separated by overworld exploration and a smattering of dialogue-heavy story beats.
The closest precedent for the battle stages of Unicorn Overlord is Quest Corporation’s Ogre Battle series (the sister series/progenitor of Tactics Ogre), which, beginning in 1993, combined real-time strategy and then nascent tactical RPG elements in much the same way. One major distinction is that,...

Marvel's first family is coming back to theaters after two mixed-to-horrendous previous attempts. Now, Marvel Studios is hoping that third time's the charm when it comes to the Fantastic Four, and we finally have confirmation of who will don the suits. We already knew that Pedro Pascal had signed on to play Reed Richards — following a brief tease in "Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness" where John Krasinski played an alternate universe version of Mr. Fantastic -- but there were several rumors as to who would play the rest of the family in what's simply titled "The Fantastic 4."
Well, get ready, because Pascal is now officially being joined by Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm. Like all superhero movies, the film's cast is made up of actors who you have undoubtedly seen before in projects both big and small.

There are plenty of anime out there that make use of the gaming trope as their premise. You know, the one where the main character gets trapped inside a video game and now has to scale through all its levels to become the strongest being alive. Isekai anime and manga are particularly fond of this trope — with the most famous ones being “No Game, No Life,” “Overlord,” and “Sword Art Online.” There’s also the newest hype in the anime world with the manhwa turned anime, Solo Levelling.
But what if we tell you some games do the opposite and use anime as their premise? Here are four fan-favorite games that have been adapted from their anime counterparts.

Here are some of the best isekai anime ever made. Some of these are old and classic, while others have that typical contemporary isekai storyline incorporated into them.

Plot: The story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. This inspirational true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.
Review: As a director, George Clooney has delivered many themes, tones, and genres. With The Boys in the Boat, the actor-turned-filmmaker aims for the same inspirational sports tales that have long been Oscar fodder. From Seabiscuit to Unbroken to Rocky, underdog tales have always been rousing cinematic experiences that unify audiences in rooting for the plucky athletes that no one ever thought about. The Boys in the Boat hits all of the requisite notes and formulaic moments that have turned countless movies into box office hits, but this tale never quite moves the needle from a smattering of...

What a year it has been for the biggest streamer in the world.
While the first half of the year was largely known for its widely seen star-studded critical failures, the second half of the year brought many successes. From a hit franchise blockbuster to multiple awards season contenders, Netflix’s year in films was turned around completely and may help them garner some hardware as we march towards the Oscars in March.
While this list may not represent the most-watched films of the year, I believe these to be the best Netflix had to offer over the past 12 months.
So, without further ado, here are my Top 5 Netflix Original Movies of 2023.
Please note that this author has not seen Best International Feature contender, Society of the Snow, as it will not be on Netflix until 1/4/24. This list will also not consider the Wes Anderson/Roald Dahl short...

Strong jaw. Flowing hair. Megawatt smile. Effortless charisma. It’s not very difficult to see the resemblance between Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt.
Kurt, 72, got his start as a child actor on TV before becoming one of Disney’s biggest contract stars in his teens — and a personal favorite of Walt Disney’s, who viewed him as “the son he never had” — a pro baseball prospect in the Seventies, an Eighties cult film icon with Escape from New York and The Thing, and then a bona fide Hollywood movie...

When promoting Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg claimed that every war movie is an anti-war movie. I think this is doubly true when it comes to genre cinema. After all, what better way to immerse audiences in the horrors of war than by telling a story specifically designed to scare them?
Hell, sometimes the war itself doesn’t even need to happen onscreen, like in the case of 1954’s Godzilla – one of the all-time best commentaries on nuclear warfare. And with Takashi Yamazaki returning the radioactive dinosaur to his post-war roots in Godzilla Minus One, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six more war-time horror movies for fans of historical terror.
While not all of the films on this list take place during a war, they all incorporate warfare and its consequences into their stories. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your...

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may owe its greatest debt not to Toho, nor even the previous entries in the Monster-Verse, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. No, the most important movie for the new show from Apple TV+ is Soldier. Yes, Soldier, the 1998 sci-flick directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
Because in Soldier, Kurt Russell played the same character as his son Wyatt, as the latter portrays the 11-year-old version of the lifelong warrior Todd 3465. The duo repeat that feat in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters by playing Lee Shaw at two points in the man’s life. The elder Russell plays Shaw in the present, as part of the research group Monarch, dealing with the revelation of monsters in 2014’s Godzilla. The younger Russell plays Shaw in the 1950s, connecting the series to the golden age of Kaiju cinema.

In 2020, Screen Gems acquired the rights to the story of Father Gabriele Amorth, the Italian priest who reportedly performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. Ángel Gómez was originally hired as director, although the project would see changes in 2022, as Julius Avery took over directorial duties while Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos would offer script revisions. Now, The Pope’s Exorcist sees a horror film made around the man apparently known as ‘the James Bond of exorcists.’
In 1987, an Italian village is visited by Father Amorth (Russell Crowe), the pope’s personal exorcist. His arrival involves investigating a man’s apparent possession by a demon, which Amorth taunts by claiming it could not even possess a pig. This is all part of the exorcist’s plan as, once the pig is possessed,...

An inspirational true story turned into a bestselling novel is about to make its way to the big screen. That tends to be the natural playbook for these sorts of dramas, but this one in particular comes loaded with an extra amount of star power.
Based on author Daniel James Brown's book of the same name, "The Boys in the Boat" tells the well-documented events surrounding the 1936 Summer Olympics and the feats accomplished by the US men's rowing team from the University of Washington. As with other incredibly underdog stories, the stories of the individuals involved -- all of whom were working class athletes struggling to come out the other side of the Great Depression, almost rivals the magnitude of their achievements.
A few significant differences with "The Boys in the Boat," however, comes from its A-list director George Clooney and the historical backdrop of Nazi Germany hosting the...

With the rise of horror studios like Blumhouse or prestige studios like A24 realizing that horror can not only be profitable but award worthy, the theaters have no shortage of scary. That’s not even including streaming services like Tubi, Shudder, and even the big 4 going all in on either producing or showcasing horror on their platforms. If you like exorcism movies and the Catholic Church, boy do we have some good news for you! "The Pope's Exorcist," which stars Oscar-winner Russell Crowe as the exorcist in question, is getting a sequel. This is according to the folks at Bloody Disgusting, who bring word that Sony and Screen Gems are in early development on a follow-up to the hit horror flick, which is currently smack dab in the middle of its theatrical run. But they're clearly wasting no time in getting a follow-up moving in the right direction.
Few details are available at this time, but it is believed that Crowe will return in the lead role. Development is underway at the studio, but there's no word on who will pen the screenplay, what the story will look like, or whether or not director Julius Avery will be back in the saddle. Julius Avery’s bucket list is now a little bit shorter.
The Australian director behind The Pope’s Exorcist has wanted to work with the New Zealand-born, Australian-raised Russell Crowe since he first saw the actor’s breakout performance in Romper Stomper (1992). The Australian drama earned Crowe the attention of Hollywood, and he’s since gone on to have a storied career that includes an Oscar win for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2001).
Crowe’s latest role as Father Gabriele Amorth in Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist is based on the real Father Amorth’s memoirs that chronicle his time as the Chief Exorcist to the Vatican. But similar to James Wan’s The Conjuring franchise, Avery merely used real life as a jumping-off point for his heightened genre picture about a young boy’s possession.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.
