Over hisnearly 30-year career, Idris Elba has played Nelson Mandela, a Baltimore drug kingpin, cowboys past and present, and even the object of Beyoncé’s dangerous fantasy. How’s that for range?
A multihyphenate on-screen and off, the actor is impossible to pin down. He’s a magnetic screen presence who can toggle between mysterious and charming — so charming — with preternatural ease. Still, Elba seems to be most comfortable when he’s dwelling in the gray areas that make flawed characters more fully human. For proof, you need look no further than Dci John Luther, the rule-breaking copper that he portrayed over five seasons of television and now, a feature film. In Luther: The Fallen Sun, Elba returns to the role that earned him a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and four Emmy nominations for a new nail-biting chapter.

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

Welcome to another rundown of every stat released by the TV insights company Samba TV. Below, we’ll run through all their released viewing stats (whether through their socials or through somewhere else) for Netflix’s newly released movies for the past three years.
How does Samba TV get its data? As described on its own website, the company tracks what appears on the users’ TV by reading pixels and utilizing this data for personalized recommendations on the TV or mobile apps connected to the television.
It’s also important to note that Samba TV stats typically only cover US households.
Of course, Netflix itself releases excellent viewing stats every Tuesday via its top 10 site. However, more data is always good, and it’s good to see shows and movies benchmarked against each other from a company like Samba TV.

Netflix Metrics The Glory
Data dump: Since its inception — and especially since it became an original content player — Netflix has wrestled with releasing viewing data publicly. This week, its improving levels of transparency reached new heights with the release of What We Watched, a global report on 18,000+ titles from its library (equating to 99% of its catalog) covering the first six months of 2023. Data transparency was one of the key issues in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA contract negotiations, and while these new semi-annual reports aren’t the full picture, they provide insight deeper than anything released before. Katie Campione’s extensive analysis, on everything from data to the timing of the release, is well worth a read here.

Netflix released a huge amount of streaming data Tuesday — viewing totals for more than 18,000 movies and seasons of TV for the first half of 2023.
Taken as a whole, it’s almost an overwhelming amount of information that speaks to Netflix’s ability to engage its huge subscriber base (just under 239 million for the end of the period covered in the data dump) — and maybe not a ton more? The stats presented are for total hours viewed, which is how Netflix measures engagement across its portfolio — but it’s also not the metric the streamer uses to order its weekly top 10 lists. For those, it uses the “view” formula of total watch time divided by running time, which somewhat levels the playing field for films and series with shorter run times. (And there are, of course, economic factors and other metrics that influence decision-making that the company will continue to keep in house.

The past 24 hours have been awash in headlines about Netflix’s What We Watched report: an information dump that many analysts considered the most transparent accounting of user data that the streamer has ever released.
The report tracked user engagement using an “hours watched” metric – meaning how many hours a piece of content was viewed, as opposed to how many individual users watched it. The report is heavy with TV series because, as the company noted, the amount of hours in a TV program are much greater than that of a standalone feature. But some movies clawed to the top of the ranking, which helps indicate how films travel on the platform.
Here are the top ten films – eight of which Netflix developed or financed — that appear in the report, which tracked hours watched from January to June of 2023:

Netflix further prized open the lid to its black box of data on Tuesday, with the streamer publishing a list of viewing figures for nearly 2,000 titles in its library.
The ratings dump covers the first half of 2023 and is measured as “hours viewed,” which departs from Netflix’s publication of “views,” the metric that it began using this year to rank its Top 10 lists.
Hours viewed puts shorter content at a significant disadvantage, while longer series (usually dramas) stand to benefit, but the figures do still offer a rare insight into Netflix subscriber behavior.
U.S. films and series unsurprisingly dominate Netflix’s list, with political conspiracy thriller The Night Agent topping the pile with 812M hours viewed. Little wonder Netflix renewed the series so swiftly.

Whether it’s as an R&b singer, a professional kickboxer, or a world class DJ (mixing under the name DJ Big Driis), Idris Elba has become quite the renaissance man. And, oh we almost forgot, he’s also an award-winning actor.
From his first major gig in a 1995 episode of “Absolutely Fabulous,” Elba began his celebrated career working steadily on television, work which lead to two iconic roles — as drug dealer Stringer Bell on HBO’s “The Wire” and as dogged police detective John Luther in BBC’s “Luther,” which earned Elba both the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards, as well as four Primetime Emmy nominations. He reprised the role in a 2023 Netflix feature film, “Luther: The Fallen Sun.”
Elba soon moved over to films, first making a splash with audiences around the world with his 2013 biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” for which he received another Golden Globe nomination.

There had been rumblings of a Luther movie for close to a decade, and Idris Elba finally got his chance with Luther: The Fallen Sun. The film was released in select theaters and on Netflix earlier this year, but Elba is ready to jump back into Luther’s world.
While speaking with Collider, Idris Elba said that Luther: The Fallen Sun performed well on Netflix and that a sequel is a possibility. “Yeah, it did really well. Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement, since it was the first film from the television show,” Elba said. “I’m hoping to make another one. I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed.“

Working Title’s reimagining of Roald Dahl’s iconic novel premiered on June 25 and was watched by 2.6M people on TV sets, according to Barb, the UK’s official audience research group.
Matilda helped Netflix crack Barb’s weekly list of the top 50 titles in the UK for the first time in nearly four months. The streamer’s last entry was Luther: The Fallen Sun, which managed 3M viewers in March.
Matilda becomes Netflix’s seventh most-watched movie since Barb began reporting viewing figures for streamers in November 2021.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery spent two weeks in Barb’s list of the top 50 shows and films in the UK, amassing a total of 18.5M viewers in that time.

The last couple of years alone have seen Idris Elba showcase a rather broad range. From gunslinging villains (Rufus Buck in The Harder They Fall) and beloved yet destructive TV detectives given a big-screen moment (Luther in Luther: The Fallen Sun), via wish-granting genies (The Djinn in Three Thousand Years of Longing) to returning Norse gods (Heimdall in Thor: Love and Thunder), animated video game characters (Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2) and a man who takes on a lion with his bare hands (Dr. Nate Samuels in Beast), it’s been a rather eclectic mix.
Hijack is — also — something altogether different.

Idris Elba may be one of the internet's several husbands, but he's very much off the market. The "Luther: The Fallen Sun" star is married to model, activist, and beauty mogul Sabrina Dhowre Elba, having tied the knot in 2019. The couple recently celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary with heartfelt social media posts dedicated to each other.
On April 26, Elba shared a romantic photo of himself kissing his wife on the cheek as they enjoyed a private dinner on the beach. The table was covered with rose petals, and lanterns led the way to their table. "Happy Anniversary… You You," he captioned the post. His wife wasn't about to let the special day pass either. Dhowre Elba posted an Instagram video of them walking at dusk on the beach and running away from the waves. "Happy 4th anniversary baby, thank you for always helping me try to conquer my fears," she wrote as the caption.

The Nielsen streaming charts had a first for the week of March 6-12: Seven different platforms made an appearance in the various top 10 lists.
Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard made its first ever appearance in the rankings, finishing ninth among original series with 310 million minutes of viewing as it reached the midpoint of its third season. Picard is the second Paramount+ original series to make the rankings, following 1923 two weeks earlier. (NCIS, which streams on both Paramount+ and Netflix, led the acquired series chart.)
Ted Lasso also put Apple TV+ back in the rankings with the premiere of its third season, racking up 539 million minutes of watch time. Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max had multiple titles in the top 10s. Peacock had two entries in the top 10 movies (including a shared one with Netflix for Turbo), and Hulu’s movie Boston Strangler also made the film chart.

Chris Rock’s live stand-up special on Netflix didn’t break through in the streamer’s global rankings, but it definitely caught on with U.S. viewers.
In the nine days after its March 4 release, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage racked up almost 1.22 billion minutes of viewing, including 798 million for the week of March 6-12. The 1.22 billion minutes equate to about 20.3 million full runs of the hourlong special.
For just the March 6-12 frame, Nielsen’s tally of 798 million minutes for Selective Outrage works out to 13.3 million hours — about three fourths of the 17.79 million hours worldwide the special recorded in Netflix’s internal measurements. Netflix has released its Top 10 for the week of March 27, and it was little to no surprise that Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston‘s comedy sequel “Murder Mystery 2” entered the English language films chart in first place. After all, the original 2019 movie was such a huge hit for Netflix.
The action-comedy sequel entered the charts with 64.4 million hours viewed, the second-biggest launch for a comedy film with 42 million views, appearing in the Top 10 in 91 countries with it being the #1 movie in more than 60 of those countries.
Right behind it was the original “Murder Mystery” with 24.7 million hours viewed globally, and the previous #1 movie “Luther: The Fallen Sun” with 12.7 million viewing hours. The lack of strong family films in theaters allowed four animated films to get into the Top 10 with Netflix’s “The Magician’s Elephant” leading the pack with 6.3 million viewing hours.

The Night Agent is quickly making its way toward becoming one of Netflix‘s most popular English-language series of all time.
In its second week on the service, the action thriller amassed another 216.4 million hours viewed from March 27-April 2, easily reigning over the Top 10 for the week. Not only did it increase viewership significantly in its second week, it also has positioned itself to likely be crowned one of Netflix’s all-time most-watched TV series.
Since its release, The Night Agent has tallied 385M viewing hours, making it about 120M away from hitting the all-time Top 10 TV list. Currently the 10th spot is taken by Ginny & Georgia Season 2 with just over half a billion viewing hours.
Last week, the series had the third-best premiere week of viewing across Season 1 TV for any Netflix Original when it clocked more than 160M viewing hours in its first few days on Netflix, only behind Wednesday and Dahmer.

They might as well pour champagne and pass out victory cigars at 30 Rock, because Peacock just had its best streaming week ever for movies. The NBCUniversal streamer’s success stemmed largely from success at the box office, giving more weight to the theaters-to-streaming trend that’s seeing cinematic exposure as key to driving viewership online.

“The Night Agent” might not be pulling “Wednesday” numbers, but the new thriller series had a very strong first week on Netflix.
The Shawn Ryan-created thriller topped Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV series list in its first week of availability, with 168.71 million hours viewed. That’s the most for Week 1 of a new Netflix series, English-language or otherwise, since “Wednesday.” And we’re only counting four days of viewing, as “The Night Agent” debuted on a Thursday; Sunday night is Netflix’s weekly cutoff.
Beyond new debuts, “The Night Agent’s” start was the single best week for a show since Season 2 of “Ginny & Georgia” premiered to 180 hours viewed. Last week marked the third-biggest week for the debut of a Netflix show since the streamer started publicizing the Top 10 lists.

“The Whale” repeated as #1 on two of three VOD charts this week, with Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor Oscar propelling significant new interest for Darren Aronofsky’s film. It leads at iTunes and Google Play, while its lower price placed it behind two $19.99 titles at the revenue-calculating Vudu.
However, the biggest impact on the VOD charts this week may come from the theatrical debut of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” Prior titles in the Lionsgate action franchise occupied six of the 20 slots at iTunes and Google Play. That’s less likely at the revenue-driven Vudu chart, where the three previous titles are available for $3.99.
But even “Wick 4” saw interest — that despite it lacking any immediate availability other than at theaters. Most platforms announced presales on Friday for Est (buying a digital download), even though that option is weeks or months away. It currently is #4, but briefly hit #1 over the weekend.
