Sixteen years after working together on Wanted, director Timur Bekmambetov and actor Chris Pratt are re-teaming for a sci-fi thriller called Mercy, which just started filming this week – and Bekmambetov has celebrated the start of filming by sharing a picture from the set! You can check it out right here:

This image reveals that the film is taking advantage of the virtual production method known as The Volume, which uses LED panels as backdrops.
Sporting a screenplay written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy will be telling a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.”

Let’s be real. If you had to name the most badass action movie of the past few years, what’s the first flick that comes to mind? Yeah yeah, John Wick might be all the rage for teenagers, Liam Neeson continues to do his geriatric Charlie Bronson, and you can never discount Jason Statham and his brand of brutal butt-kicking. But come on, as far as violently visceral and scintillatingly satisfying underdog tales loaded with realistic fisticuffs and gore-sodden gunfights – nobody does it better than Nobody! Indeed, the 2021 cinematic blitzkrieg starring Bob Odenkirk as an unassuming everyman by day and certified ass-kicker by night hit all the right notes to deliver a vicious and delicious revenge dish for the ages.
With that being said, did you know that a Nobody 2 is currently back in the works? Did you know there were discussions about making a Nobody and John Wick crossover movie?...

Perhaps the biggest reason why the ghost story has enjoyed such popularity and power for so long is because it lies at the crux of some of humanity's most fundamental mysteries. For one thing, it addresses the question of life after death in a way that doesn't require belief in pearly gates or eternal hellfire, as it presupposes the existence of the soul. After all, if a person's energy can change the mood of a room, can't that same energy exist independently of a body and remain noticeable? Additionally, the total unknowability of ghosts is at once a source of fear and melancholy: if such entities exist, we can't know for sure what their intentions are, and if we might be facing such a fate, wouldn't such constraints as having no body and no voice be remarkably frustrating and lonely?
Steven Soderbergh's latest feature, "Presence," addresses these concepts in a remarkably effective fashion.

First-person storytelling has existed since the very dawn of cinema, but it’s only with the rise of video games that it became commonplace. Sure, there were first-person thrillers before the digital age, such as 1947’s Lady in the Lake, but the visceral thrills of looking through someone else’s eyes are much easier to accomplish when you aren’t hindered by bulky camera equipment and spatial limitations.
That’s why it makes sense that a self-professed “son of rock ‘n roll” who grew up on a steady diet of American action flicks and videogames would see the advent of tiny portable cameras as an opportunity to explore first-person filmmaking. This is what led to the Fps-inspired music videos for the Biting Elbow’s The Stampede and Bad Motherfucker, which were both directed by the Russian-born Illya Naishuller (also the band’s lead vocalist).

“Nobody” director Ilya Naishuller has been tapped to direct Idris Elba and John Cena in “Heads of State” for Amazon Studios.
The studio won the pitch package consisting of the “Suicide Squad” co-stars and an original draft by Harrison Query in 2020. Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, the writing partners behind “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and more are handling rewrites.
Though plot details are being kept under wraps, the film has been described as “‘Air Force One’ meets ‘Midnight Run.'”

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.

Coachella Night 2 was, by many accounts, dominated by the festival’s youngest and oldest performers.
Headliner Billie Eilish, 20, delivered what was deemed a strong, history-making performance as the festival’s youngest-ever headliner.
On the other end of the spectrum was the shirtless 68-year old Danny Elfman, who played half a dozen Oingo Boingo songs — many for the first time since the 1980s — as well as high-octane versions of his film and TV work. The latter included an “unhinged hardcore remake” of his Simpsons theme, the Spider-Man main title, “Breakfast Machine” from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, “Ice Dance/The Grand Finale” from Edward Scissorhands, “Alice’s Theme” from Alice in Wonderland as well as his Batman theme and “Jack’s Lament/This Is Halloween/What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
At the outset, Elfman promised “a strange little show.” But launching a guitar-heavy assault on Oingo Boingo tunes such as “Only a Lad,...

An open letter against the war in Ukraine has been signed by prominent Russian cinematographers, spearheaded by Fedor Lyass (“Hardcore Henry”).
The signatories include Roman Vasyanov, Mikhail Krichman, Pavel Kapinos (“Hardcore Henry”), Vladislav Opelyants and Pavel Fomintsev (“Unclenching the Fists”).
Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine began on Feb. 24, Russian filmmakers and animators have bravely rallied and spoken out against their government’s actions and have called upon the international community for support. In doing so, the signatories have put themselves at risk on both personal and professional levels. Alexander Rodnyansky, the two-time Oscar-nominated producer of “Leviathan,” “Loveless” told Variety last week that he felt “unbearably ashamed” and “incredibly, deeply sad” when news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine broke.

Joss Whedon has broken his silence on the many allegations, made almost a year ago, about his behavior as a showrunner on series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel.
It was last February when Buffyverse alumna Charisma Carpenter, in a series of Instagram posts she penned (in part to #StandWithRayFisher), elaborated on claims she had made over the years, including about what she called Whedon’s “history of being casually cruel,” his creation of “hostile and toxic work environments,” what the Angel boss allegedly said and did to Cordelia’s portrayer during her real-life pregnancy.

Cary Joji Fukunaga’s long awaited Bond flick “No Time to Die,” the final instalment featuring long-time lead Daniel Craig, will close this year’s EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival, presented by Joji Fukunaga (“Beasts of No Nation”) himself and the film’s Oscar-winning cinematographer Lunus Sandgren (“La La Land”).
“This is the first time Cary Joji Fukunaga and Linus Sandgren collaborated on a film project, yet the result is just the kind of visual spectacle we hoped for given their artistic portfolios,” said the festival in a release accompanying the announcement.
This will be Joji Fukunaga’s first time attending EnergaCamerimage in person, although his film “Jane Eyre” and the “True Detective” pilot episode he directed both screened at the fest. Sandgren is becoming something of an EnergaCamerimage regular, having presented in person two films on which he worked, Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” and “First Man.”

WME on Monday launched WME Independent, a division to broker domestic and international film sales and film financing consulting services. It will be headed by Deborah McIntosh and Alex Walton, both of whom were most recently at Endeavor Content.
Those deals had for years been steered under Endeavor Content, but that entity is in the process of being sold off as a freestanding production entity. McIntosh and Walton will bring film sales and film financing consulting services back inside the agency and will differentiate itself in the marketplace by offering domestic and international film sales services.
“WME Independent will serve as a critical vehicle to fuel our clients’ projects while providing the global perspective necessary to navigate today’s content marketplace,” WME chief operating officer Dan Limerick said. “Deb, Alex and their team have an undeniable track record of bringing many successful artist-driven projects to fruition, and we look forward...

“I have decided to keep a journal. Not in a word program or digital file, but in longhand, writing every word out so that every inflection of penmanship, every word chosen, scratched out, revised, is recorded. To set down all my thoughts and the simple events of my day factually and without hiding anything. When writing about oneself, one should show no mercy. I will keep this diary for one year; 12 months. And at the end of that time, it will be destroyed. Shredded, then burnt. The experiment will be over.” Searching narration binds Paul Schrader’s work, the lone ranger facing a crisis of faith, unable to shake off the past. The above dialogue introduces Ethan Hawke’s Reverend Ernst Toller at the beginning of First Reformed (2017). Schrader’s characters share their own folklore and throughout this mix their tales come and go. The lyrics take on the form of character too,...

Tanya Wexler, director of the brilliant indie crime caper Buffaloed, returns for yet another film about a strong, feisty woman – in this case Lindy (Kate Beckinsale) a former bouncer with a slightly murderous anger-management problem that she controls with the help of an electrode-lined vest she uses to shock herself back to normalcy whenever she gets homicidal. After Justin, the first guy she’s ever fallen for is murdered, she goes on a revenge-fueled rampage to find the killer while the cops pursue her as their chief suspect.

You wait all these years for the next action stars to emerge, only to come to find that you have been waiting at the wrong doors and looking at the wrong are groups all along. After Liam Neeson knocked us all bandy nearly 15 years ago with a later career action star transformation we never saw coming in Pierre Morel’s Taken and Keanu Reeves was reborn in a role he was born for in 2014’s John Wick, we now have another unexpected action hero emerging and his name is Bob Odenkirk. A familiar face actor to many, he has thrived particularly on TV through incredible turns in the likes of Breaking Bad, its spin-off Better Call Saul and Fargo. Odenkirk’s career has been varied certainly, but even with that fact in mind, few of us ever expected Nobody.

Starring Bob Odenkirk, Nobody was directed by Hardcore Henry's Ilya Naishuller, was written by John Wick's Derek Kolstad, and is coming to 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 22nd. In support of the upcoming release, I was able to catch up with stunt coordinator (and second unit director) Greg Rementer, who has been involved in some of the world's biggest and best action movies, including Atomic Blonde and Avengers: Endgame! During our interview, we talk about prepping for the movie's memorable, close quarters fight and increasing the scale and intensity for the movie's action-packed finale.
From the writer of legendary action film John Wick, comes Nobody, the story of an ordinary, family man who will stop at nothing to defend what is his. Nobody is available to own for the first time on Digital June 8, 2021 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™ and DVD on June 22, 2021 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

“Nobody,” the frenetic Bob Odenkirk-led action film that premiered in March, hasn’t been greenlit for a sequel, but that hasn’t stopped Derek Kolstad from beginning to work on a potential follow-up. Ilya Naishuller, who directed “Nobody,” told JoBlo in a recent interview that Kolstad, who served as screenwriter on the original film, is kicking around ideas for a sequel.
“There’s plenty of stories that can be told in this world, with the character Hutch. I know that Derek has begun work on the sequel,” Naishuller told JoBlo. There’s been no official word on a “Nobody” sequel, but the film’s fans have reason to be optimistic, given the original film’s critical and commercial success.
IndieWire’s Eric Kohn praised the film’s action sequences and humor in his grade B review in March. “’Nobody’ works in fits and starts, but it’s hard to...

French-made suspense thriller “The Pilot” will join the slate of Hong Kong-, Paris- and Los Angeles-based sales agent All Rights Entertainment at the upcoming film markets.
The story follows a drone pilot in Mali whose wife and daughter are kidnapped by terrorists. They will be executed if he doesn’t derail the capture by his team of the head of a jihadist network. Soon to wrap in Almeria, Spain, “The Pilot” will be ready for delivery by the end of this year and released in the first quarter of 2022.
The film is the latest example in the screenlife genre, in which everything the viewer sees happens on a computer screen, a smartphone or a tablet and the entire film plays out on screens. Other recent successful examples include “Searching,” “Unfriended” and “Profile.”

Mild-mannered Bob Odenkirk goes all John Wick in this gleefully violent action thriller that has a few surprises up its sleeve. How violent is it? Well, director Ilya Naishuller’s previous feature was first person shoot-’em-up Hardcore Henry and it’s from both the writer (Derek Kolstad) and producer (David Leitch) of, yep, John Wick. In other words, it’s pretty goddamn violent.
Nobody opens with a teaser of what’s to come, as a blood-spattered Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) sits across a table being questioned. “Who are you?”, comes the question, and the title card provides the answer. The rest of the film unfolds in flashback, opening with a terrific loser’s montage, establishing exactly what the week-to-week life of suburban dad...

It’s no secret the connection between the worlds of cinema and video games has never been more blurred. The recent Ghost of Tsushima featured none other than “Kurosawa Mode,” while films like Hardcore Henry place you inside an Fps albeit one you can’t control, not to mention the number of movie adaptations of celebrated games and vice versa. However, it’s rare that a videogame developer would straight-up mine classic Hollywood cinema for a new project.
Such an occurrence has happened with the announcement of a new videogame “freely inspired” by Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, the most-acclaimed film of all-time. Directly borrowing the title of the 1958 classic itself, Gematsu reports the narrative adventure game is coming later this year from publisher Microids and developer Pendulo Studios. However, as afterglow reminds us, it’s not the first game to take from the Hitchcock canon as Arxel Tribe released the...

“Godzilla Vs. Kong” director Adam Wingard is set to direct the action movie “Hardcore” at Universal, a film adaptation of a comic book series co-created by “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman.
“Hardcore” is an action and science-fiction thriller that’s based on a Skybound and Image comic book series co-created by Kirkman and Marc Silvestri. Kirkman also wrote an original story outline for the “Hardcore” film based on the comic.
“Hardcore” follows a soldier as he works to save the world without getting his hands dirty. The first volume of the Mature rated comic book series, which was written by Andy Diggle with art by Alessandro Vitti, imagines a soldier who can hijack the body of anyone in the world and take control of them to target enemies that normal soldiers can’t. Ever since the release of Wanted, I have been deeply fascinated by the career of Timur Bekmambetov, who has directed projects like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and a reimagining of Ben-Hur, produced a wide variety of genre-spanning films including the animated movie 9, Apollo 18, and Hardcore Henry, and has spent the last several years carving out his own niche in Hollywood with a handful of Screenlife films that immerse viewers in their stories through the utilization of computer and other technologies.
Bekmambetov’s latest Screenlife project is Profile, which is set to be released in theaters tomorrow, May 14th, courtesy of Focus Features (you can read my review Here). Starring Valene Kane and Shazad Latif, Profile follows an intrepid journalist looking to expose a terrorist recruiter by going undercover, but she finds herself crossing some lines once she gets drawn in by his methods.

Over the last few years, filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov has become synonymous with Screenlife cinema, producing projects like Unfriended and Searching, and now he’s at the helm of a tech-immersive film of his own: Profile. Something I’ve always appreciated about Bekmambetov’s films—whether it’s the ones that he’s producing or directing—is how he forward-thinking he is when it comes to utilizing technology in the world of film (one of my favorite examples is Hardcore Henry), and with Profile, he proves that there’s plenty of drama to be found online as he manages to crank up the tension throughout this engrossing and harrowing terrorism thriller.
Based on the novel In the Skin of a Jihadist by Anna Érelle, Profile is centered on a struggling journalist named Amy (Valene Kane), who’s barely keeping it together in her everyday life—she doesn’t seem particularly invested...

This was a strong box-office weekend, by current 2021 standards. “Nobody,” an R-rated thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, from the director of “Hardcore Henry,” grossed $6.7 million — about one third of the weekend’s $19 million overall total. (Theaters were closied this time last year; in 2019 “Us” opened to $71 million.)
“Nobody” is good news for Universal, which acquired the film from STX for about $10 million. The film’s A- Cinemascore is particularly strong for its genre and may suggest staying power that could bleed over to its likely Premium VOD debut in about three weeks. It benefits from New York and Los Angeles theater openings; perhaps an even greater benefit for the low-budget title is it had virtually no competition.
A more meaningful test for “Nobody,” and for the industry, comes Wednesday with “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the year’s first five-day opening for a holiday weekend. It’s the kind of highly anticipated, seat-shaking...

Bob Odenkirk’s new action revenge-thriller Nobody was a somebody at the weekend box office, opening to a pleasing $6.7 million domestically as more theaters in Los Angeles and the rest of West Coast reopen.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ilya Naishuller of Hardcore Henry fame and written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, the Universal film had no trouble topping the chart after being embraced by audiences and critics alike (don’t be surprised if there are sequels, similar to the Taken and John Wick franchises).

Updated with Saturday Am B.O.: There’s a great axiom when it comes to success in Hollywood; a saying which remains true through good times and bad, even at a moment when streaming is stepping on theatrical’s feet, and that is, “Talent rules.”
Such talent is Russian filmmaker Ilya Naishuller, whose Universal action movie Nobody literally turns the genre on its head.
Sure, it had a John Wick sensibility in its screenplay and is even penned by that franchise’s creator, Derek Kolstad. But shot-wise, angle-wise, and protagonist wise, Nobody shakes up the action space in an invigorating way. The movie headlines 58 year-old SNL alum-Mr. Show architect-turned-leading man wisenheimer Bob Odenkirk, who shows sublimely here that one is never, ever too old to be an action star.
At a time when Los Angeles and NYC theaters are looking to get back on their feet with a fresh feature,...

Ilya Naishuller doesn’t let a second go to waste in Nobody. It’s a lean and mean R-rated action-comedy that begins and ends with a relentless pace while never forsaking character. Still, compared to Naishuller’s directorial debut, Hardcore Henry, his second feature is patient. The musician-filmmaker threw everything he had into the kitchen sink with his first (love-it-or-hate-it) action movie. […]

Bob Odenkirk had plenty of time to prep for his latest role — two years to be precise. During the week he would film “Better Call Saul,” and on weekends he would fly to meet up with a stuntman for his role in Universal action thriller “Nobody,” which opens March 26 in theaters.
The 58-year-old actor plays Hutch, a seemingly milquetoast suburban husband who, trying to keep his family safe, doesn’t fight back when thieves break into his home one night. But the robbery triggers his long buried, violent past, propelling the film from “Hardcore Henry” director Ilya Naishuller.
It was the first time Odenkirk, known for a career in comedy, had delved into stunts. But the actor, also a producer on the project, had another motive — a personal one: His own home had been broken into twice. If anyone could relate to Hutch, it would be him.

While the new film, Nobody, may bring to mind films like John Wick (2014) and Taken (2008), it serves its own hero rather well by delivering only a passing explanation of the “particular set of skills” that the hero ostensibly possesses and instead delivering the action with gleeful abandon.
After thieves break into his seemingly idyllic suburban home, Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) opts not to resort to violence to rid the home of the intruders. This disappoints his teenage son, Blake (Gage Monroe), who views him as a coward. Afterward, Hutch and his wife, Becca (Connie Nielsen), begin to grow even further apart. Now, simmering with his checked rage, Hutch is again put in another brutal situation when the bus he takes every day to work is commandeered by a group of weapon-brandishing thugs who threaten all aboard. This triggers something within Hutch and the aforementioned skills come into play. Of course, this...

Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is (as his film title suggests) a Nobody. He’s a schlub who gets up for the same soul-deadening routine each day: he drinking his coffee, forgets to take the garbage out, and sits at his boring desk job. He then comes home to kids who barely tolerate him and a wife who literally makes a barrier of pillows between them in their bed. When he fails to protect their house against a home invasion–even though he clearly could have–the sense of disappointment from his family is palpable.
But the incident awakens something long dormant in Hutch: a set of skills and a primal anger that served him well in a former life and career defined by violence. Hutch has to give that repressed rage an outlet, which unfortunately brings him into the sights of a deadly Russian crime boss, even as it reawakens...
