New York, Feb 18 (Ians) Sensor-based inhalers integrated into health care providers' clinical workflows may help improve medication adherence and support children with asthma, a new study suggests.
The study showed that connected inhalers, which use Bluetooth sensors that attach to participants' asthma inhalers to detect medication use and share the data with physicians, may promote adherence to recommended controller medication use and proactively detect worsening of asthma symptoms.
As a result, this may enable health care providers to intervene more rapidly -- before patients become critically ill -- and improve communication between patients, caregivers and asthma care providers.
"Emerging connected technologies can help improve patient health, with this randomised-controlled clinical trial showing that pediatric asthma patients with access to inhaler sensors report better asthma control and quality of life than patients who only received a standardized asthma education curriculum," said lead author Ruchi Gupta from Northwestern University.

The Mad Hatter was one of the few remaining human/non-superpowered Batman villains yet to be adapted for Fox's Gotham, but that changes when season 3 kicks off next month. We recently found out that Benedict Samuel (The Walking Dead, Asthma, Underground) had been cast as Jervis Tech, and now thanks to EW we have our first look at him in the role. This take on The Hatter is described as “a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her.” Samuel will recur, and is set to make his debut in episode 3. Gotham returns Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. Et on Fox.

It's been over five months since Marvel films released a new product, so naturally the world is jonesing to get their hands on the comics brand's upcoming Netflix series, Jessica Jones. And when Krysten Ritter is the one signed on to play the brand's first leading female superhero, that excitement is pretty understandable. Last night at the premiere of the film Asthma, hosted by the Cinema Society and Northwest, Vulture couldn't help but geek out with Ritter about comic books. "You know, I never really grew up reading comic books," Ritter said. "When I started reading Jessica Jones and the Alias comics, I was kind of bummed that I wasn't exposed to comics as a little girl, because it's such a visceral experience, and it's so immersive, because there's pictures and it comes alive. I feel like it would have been a great thing for me as a kid, just...

Breaking Bad's Krysten Ritter is once again entangled with a druggie in the trailer for indie drama Asthma.
While Jesse Pinkman is nowhere to be found this time around, Ritter hits the road with a strung-out rocker (Benedict Samuel) and hits up a commune in the fresh teaser.
If only Marvel's Jessica Jones was around to punch out this shaggy, drug-addled dope…
On the plus side, Asthma does feature a wonderfully strange cameo from shock rocker Iggy Pop as a man known only as Local Drunk.
Asthma was written and directed by Jake Hoffman, an actor you've probably seen in The Wolf of Wall Street and Click.
IFC Films releases the romantic drama in the Us on October 23.
