At one point in the new Apple TV+ miniseries The Big Cigar, Black Panther Party founder Huey P. Newton (André Holland) attends a party and recalls the time he and film producer Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola) tried to write a movie about his life, which would have starred comedian Richard Pryor (Inny Clemons). The key, Schneider explains: “If it’s gonna be a biopic, you have to choose a moment in Huey’s life that means something. Don’t just make it womb to tomb.”

The recently released Sugar, starring Colin Farrell, was a modern rethinking of the noir genre with references to old cinema – and audiences fell in love with it. However, in the sixth episode, fans were treated to such a twist that it seemed that the showrunner had simply left at that moment, leaving ChatGPT to finish writing the plot.
If that unexpected twist ruined the magic of Sugar's noir for you, these five TV shows will restore your faith in the genre.
1. Perry Mason, 2020-2023
1930, Los Angeles. Private detective Perry Mason suffers from post-traumatic disorder and is going through a difficult divorce, so he often tries to ground himself with a bottle of alcohol.
One day, a lawyer comes to Mason with a bigger case – unknown persons have killed the baby of a local businessman. Much to his friend's surprise, Mason agrees to investigate. He soon realizes that he has become...

This post contains major spoilers for the Apple TV+ series "Sugar." Like, truly gigantic spoilers.
The internet has been humming with potential theories about John Sugar (Colin Farrell) and his real identity for weeks, but the newest episode of "Sugar" confirms one of the biggest guesses that's been floating around for a while: Private investigator John Sugar is an alien.
"[Character] has been an alien the whole time" is right up there with "[character] has been dead the whole time," or "this entire show has been a dream" in terms of the most paradigm-shifting, world-shaking reveals a television series can execute, but shows rarely have the audacity to provide their audiences with such a massive misdirect. The last time I can think of a show pulling off a twist this big was in 2017, when "The Good Place" revealed that its characters were actually in the Bad Place for the entirety of season...

When one thinks of auteur-driven Peak TV in the streaming age, the first shows that generally come to mind are “House Of Cards” (2013) with David Fincher at the helm (at least for the first few eps), “True Detective” (2014) by director Cary Fukunaga, and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick” (2014). Crucial to the mix, but sometimes missing in that conversation, is Jane Campion’s “Top Of The Lake” starring Elisabeth Moss, which debuted in 2013, right at the beginning of this new second golden age of TV.

In early May, sandwiched between the NewFronts and the traditional broadcast (and now streaming) upfronts, a new showcase for pitches to major advertisers will make its debut.
Billed as The Way Upfronts, the series of virtual presentations slated for May 7 and 8 is a hybrid of the annual springtime spectacles of ad-supported television and the supercharged energy of a festival marketplace. Plans call for making them quarterly, in-person events, with next month’s launch edition meant to increase visibility at a time when talent will already be making the rounds and fully emerging from a strike-impaired 2023.
Oscar-winning producer and manager Michael Sugar’s company, Sugar23, is leading the new initiative, which has secured attendance from brands representing some $120 billion in spending. Those Madison Avenue dollars are drawn to the talent in the Zoom. While organizers have not shared the names of presenters to the public, the host committee for the event includes Scarlett Johansson,...

Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney drama American Rust is returning for its second season — on its third platform.
Amazon announced that the sophomore run — titled American Rust: Broken Justice — will premiere on its Prime Video platform rather than the previously announced ad-supported service Freevee. All 10 episodes of the season will debut in a binge drop on March 28.
The drama was originally developed for Showtime, which canceled the show after its first season aired. Freevee picked up American Rust for season 2 in June 2022, with the show now airing on the Amazon flagship service. With Amazon having formally added ads to its Prime Video platform, Freevee programming has been migrating to the larger Prime Video.
Season 2 follows Del Harris (Daniels) and Grace Poe (Tierney) as they try to rebuild their lives after the events of season 1. Season 2 picks up with a string of seemingly unrelated murders, hinting at a much larger conspiracy...

Film and TV studio Fifth Season has secured international distribution rights to “Monsieur Spade,” the crime drama series starring and executive produced by Clive Owen.
Fifth Season will represent the title at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.
The six-episode series is based on Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade, the protagonist of 1930 novel “The Maltese Falcon,” adapted several times for the screen, most notably in 1941 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart as the sleuth.
In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered, and as the town grieves, secrets emerge and new leads are established. Spade learns the murders are connected to a mysterious child, who is believed to possess great powers.

Plot: A family moves into a house with a supernatural presence.
Review: I’m sure I can be forgiven for rolling my eyes when I heard the logline for Presence. I’ve seen my share of haunted house movies and was wary of anything being added to this well-worn genre. However, director Steven Soderbergh and his writer David Koepp have once again subverted expectations, making this a supernatural tale that’s light on horror but heavy on heart.
The big selling point here will be that Soderbergh’s camera is always from the perspective of the presence itself (no one uses the term ghost here), making it an interesting visual exercise. The family is observed from an arm’s length, with us eventually realizing that the presence itself isn’t necessarily malignant, nor is it even aware of why it’s in their home in the first place.

Just when I was finally coming to accept that The Knick was never going to come back, André Holland had to get my hopes up all over again. While speaking with The Wrap, Holland said that The Knick season 3 is still alive.
Following the cancelation of The Knick after two amazing seasons, word emerged that Moonlight director Barry Jenkins was developing a third season with André Holland, but since then… nothing. When The Wrap asked Holland what the premise of that third season would have been, the actor didn’t want to say anything as it could still happen. “I would tell you but there is still a possibility [it could happen],” Holland said. “We are working very hard to make it happen. Keep writing about it, keep talking about it and maybe we can convince the powers that be to write the check.” He said that Jenkins is still involved and that...

Do you remember "The Knick"? It's easy for some shows to fall through the cracks, and it's even easier when they're on networks most people don't have. But "The Knick," which ran for two great seasons, is what I'd consider "must-see TV." Created by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler and helmed entirely by Steven Soderbergh, the series was set at the (fictional) Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City in 1900. Dark, gruesome, funny, and altogether brilliant, the series followed the medical staff of the Knick and their various exploits. Cinemax canceled the show after two seasons, but then, in 2020, we got word that a reboot/third season was in the works. Soderberg was developing the new season/series along with director Barry Jenkins and André Holland, who played Dr. Algernon Edwards in the original series.
Since then, though, we haven't heard much about this new take on "The Knick," which is...

No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story (“Erin Brockovich”) and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey (“The Girlfriend Experience”).
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie “Behind the Candelabra” (which isn’t included on this list of big screen outings). He’s also been nominated twice as a director on “The Knick,” as a cinematographer on “Behind the Candelabra” and as a producer on “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” “His Way” and “Godless.”

The new mystery series, A Murder At The End Of The World, is creating a buzz on social media as audiences connect with the ensemble whodunit from creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij. I had the chance to chat with cast and crew members about the series, including the great Clive Owen. A veteran of everything from the BMW short film series The Hire and Spike Lee’s Inside Man, Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men, Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick, and much more, Owen is one of the best actors working today. We chatted about his involvement with the series and what it was like working with Emma Corrin and the great ensemble cast, as well as his upcoming project with Scott Frank. Now, as the new year creeps closer, fans are itching to know what they can expect to see next, and HBO has kindly provided a few answers.

Plot: Flora (Eve Hewson) is a hard-partying young mother living in Dublin with her teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). He’s a would-be delinquent constantly in trouble with the cops, while her ex (Jack Reynor) is a well-meaning but unreliable flake. When she finds a guitar in the trash, she decides, spur of the moment, to take online guitar lessons. Her teacher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) turns out to be kind-hearted and sympathetic, and soon she discovers that music could be a way that finally allows her to reach her son.

John Carney has not directed a movie since 2016, and that movie was "Sing Street." Though the movie may not have been a big hit at the time, those who have seen it largely regard it — rightfully so — as a true gem. It would not be a stretch to call it one of the most underappreciated movies of the last decade. All of this to say, Carney is finally back with a new movie in the form of "Flora and Son," which is set for release next month. Now, Apple has released a trailer ahead of the film's rollout, and it looks very much in line with what we've come to expect from Carney as a filmmaker.

In “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” Corey Hawkins’ Clemens finds himself on the unenviable position of being trapped on a ship — with Dracula.
Based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s original novel (“The Captain’s Log”), “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” uses the titular ship’s voyage to England, with Dracula part of the cargo, as an exercise in claustrophobic horror, inspired, in part, by Ridley Scott’s immortal “Alien.” Corey plays a young doctor named Clemens, who boards the ship when it makes port in Bulgaria. Can he find a scientific explanation for the strange happenings on the ship? And is there any way to cure a young stowaway, who seems to only be there to supply Dracula with fresh blood?

Apparently rumors have been flying around for years that Clive Owen has a deep-seated fear of cute, cuddly badgers. In a new interview with Empire, the actor took the opportunity to clear things up.
“Somebody used to post very weird things as if I’d said them – they’d be quotes on the IMDb page, or whatever – and one of them was that I had a phobia of badgers,” Owen said. “I’d get asked about them in junkets! ‘Is it true you’re really scared of badgers?’ And I’d go,...

Heist movies are the best movies. This is an irrefutable fact. Stories about a group of people coming together and devising a plan to steal money, jewels, art, or anything of value from a secure location give you everything you could want. They're about interpersonal relationships, people being good at their jobs, sticking it to the powerful, and they're always filled with delightful complications and twists. In terms of big screen entertainments, they truly are the ideal genre, and no one is better at making them than Steven Soderbergh.
Of course, the crowning jewel of his heist oeuvre is the "Ocean's" trilogy, a star-studded triptych of top-shelf Hollywood entertainment that I could watch at any time. I even rewatched "Ocean's Eleven" two days before I even knew I would be writing this. Those films don't make up the entirety of the heist section of his filmography, though. He came back...

“Full Circle” came to an exceptionally satisfying end July 27, as director Steven Soderbergh and writer Ed Solomon elegantly pulled together the varied storylines and themes that comprised its sprawling, penetrating narrative while leaving just enough unanswered questions to tantalize the viewer. Soderbergh looked back on the making of the Max limited series in a wide-ranging roundtable interview that touched on a number of subjects both directly and indirectly related to “Full Circle,” from why he likes to shoot quickly to what he learned from the New York cop movies of the 1970s. Here are some highlights from the conversation.
On the influence of William Friedkin and Sidney Lumet.
While preparing for “Full Circle,” Soderbergh looked at William Friedkin’s “The French Connection” and Sidney Lumet cop movies like “Serpico.” “There can be something compelling and arresting about an approach that’s really direct and doesn’t have a lot of filigree in it,...

After SAG-AFTRA leadership announced that the union would be going on strike, picketing began on Friday. In New York City and Los Angeles, actors have joined writers outside the studios, picketing and rallying outside of Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, Amazon, NBCUniversal and others in both cities.
Corporate greed was at the center of messaging on day one of the joint picketing from SAG-AFTRA and the WGA.
When the bus carrying SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher and the rest of the negotiating committee arrived outside of Netflix’s LA offices, they were mobbed by media and fellow protesters as they inched their way down the sidewalk along Sunset Boulevard.
Drescher delivered a passionate speech at the Thursday press conference announcing the strike, and showed up to today’s protests equally ready to fight fire with fire. When asked by Variety Friday about Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recent comments about the strike,...

Since his “retirement” from filmmaking in 2013, director Steven Soderbergh has never fully backed away from the world of features: He has eight movies to his name in the past decade — more than some of his peers have produced in their entire careers. But Soderbergh did subsequently branch out into the world of TV, a medium he’s approached with the same enterprising, experimental spirit as he does his latter-period films. First came 2014’s “The Knick,” the Cinemax period medical drama helmed entirely by Soderbergh at a time when marquee directors were just starting to dabble in TV; then “Mosaic,” a project released in 2017 as both an interactive app and an HBO series, showing the same interest in new technology that’s led Soderbergh to shoot multiple movies on an iPhone.
“Mosaic” was a collaboration with screenwriter Ed Solomon, who also penned Soderbergh’s 1950s noir “No Sudden Move.” The new...

Midway through a sword fight in an upcoming episode of Max’s period action drama Warrior, one of the combatants loses her blade and seems on the verge of death at the hands of the man she wants revenge against. He’s so confident in his abilities, though, that he invites her to pick up her weapon and resume, smugly telling her, “You came all this way. It would be a shame to give up now.”
For a while, it seemed that the TV business had given up on Warrior.

Just before the end of the seventh episode of Season 2 of “Perry Mason,” the writers expose the mastermind behind the murder that Mason’s defendants — a pair of poor Mexican brothers — were paid to commit. It’s the perfect reveal in that the villain’s identity feels shocking yet inevitable upon reflection, given how intricately it’s interwoven with everything that has come before. Yet according to Michael Begler, who took over showrunning duties on “Perry Mason” this season with his writing partner Jack Amiel, the identity of the antagonist came fairly late in the process. “I think the last part [we figured out] was who done it,” Begler told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “When I really think about how we broke the season, we were rewriting and rewriting. We are living in the Golden Age of Television… I.P. Whether it’s NBC rebooting “Night Court” or Netflix reliving “That 90’s Show,” intellectual property is the name of the game. Heck, “The Lord of the Rings” can’t even finish one reboot before the next comes along. Viewers are so inundated with old ideas rehashed into something new, they may not even notice how thoroughly I.P. has infiltrated their entertainment. Marvel comics were adapted into Marvel movies, which were extended into Marvel TV shows, which were then connected back to Marvel movies, which, by then, were incorporating old Marvel actors right alongside new Marvel actors — both playing the same role. I’m not even sure that winding, snakelike sentence holds together, but the point remains: We’re hearing the same stories about the same people over and over and over again. Hollywood has found a way to turn ouroboros into pure profit.

The R-rated horror-comedy directed for Universal by Elizabeth Banks has broken out as one of the early success stories of 2023, affirming that original features, and those in the comedy arena, can certainly still perform in today’s marketplace. Based loosely on real events that took place in 1985, the film watches as a duffel bag’s worth of cocaine drops from a drug smuggler’s plane and winds up in a Georgia forest, becoming a favorite snack for a hulking black bear. An electric set of unfortunate souls, including Prince, Keri Russell and Christian Convery, are then subject to the animal’s murderous rampage.
