Over the last 12 months, the world seemed to be changing faster than ever, and not for the better. At a time when every day felt like a week, and every week felt like a year, watching a movie felt like a dangerous proposition; you had no idea what the world was going to look like when you walked out of the theater two hours later. Even the most immersive films couldn’t always keep that anxiety at bay, these dark thoughts seeping into even darker rooms and transforming these sacred spaces into elaborate Rorschach tests that tricked us into seeing whatever was scaring us most at that particular moment, or whatever might be needed to give us hope. It was a heightened stretch unlike any in recent memory, but the best films ultimately did what the best films always do: They brought the world into focus, showed it from a fresh sonspective,...

Many have been asking “so what exactly has Diana been getting up to in the period between her recent solo origin story and her arrival in Zack Synder’s Batman V Superman” and will her story be tied in someone to the forthcoming Justice League? Marvel fans are expecting big things from Avengers: Infinity War. After all, Marvel Studios has been leading up to it over the past ten years! After these Avengers films, the McU will never be the same again. Marvel President Kevin Feige has previously said that the McU will be a very different and new thing.
Marvel Studios has done something that no other studio has ever done before, and when it gets to the end, fans are expecting to see things that they've never seen before. During a recent interview with Toronto Sun, Chris Pratt teased what we can expect and he says that it's going to transcend the genre and stand the test of time:
"I think this sequel transcends the genre in a way. It’s a deep motion picture and something different than just a big spectacle film. There’s a difference between dime-store novels and literature and this is like literature.

Avengers: Infinity War is, by name and nature, the third Avengers movie, and though Joe and Anthony Russo’s Civil War divided Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a way Ultron never could, Tony Stark and the rest of the gang are very much the anchor point of Marvel’s 2018 event film.
That logic still applies even when you begin to factor in the expanded cast of Avengers: Infinity War – namely the Guardians of the Galaxy – and Star-Lord himself Chris Pratt has clarified that James Gunn’s motley crew are poised to take a back seat next May.
Nerdist caught up with the actor in anticipation of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (our review), where Pratt essentially took the opportunity to differentiate the Guardians from their McU brethren.

Sometimes I’m not here to tell you what went wrong with a story. Not what I usually do, but sometimes a story just gets the law right. Doesn’t stop me from writing about it. I can have as much fun explaining why the law works the way it was portrayed in a story as I can explaining why the law doesn’t work the way it was portrayed in a story. In fact, I can have more fun. When I write about why a story is right, no one gets mad at me.
Champions v2 #7 is one of those stories that got it right. For those who haven’t read it, the new Champions comic tells the adventures of some teenaged Marvel super heroes who teamed up after they became disillusioned with the behavior of the adult Marvel super heroes. Particularly their behavior in Civil War II.

Much has been made about the connection between Donald Trump and his obsession with ratings, leading many concerned citizens to call for audiences to boycott watching his inauguration. After all, he may not have been able to see the stark drop in attendance outside the U.S. Capital building, but we know he can read a ratings sheet.
In the end, those who didn’t tune in — for whatever reason — made the right choice. What President Donald Trump said during his first presentation as president was meant for his supporters, and even they likely wondered if what they were watching was a campaign speech instead of an inaugural address.

[Warning: This story contains spoilers for the ending of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story].
In the days after Rogue One: A Star War Story's release, there was one scene fans couldn't stop talking about — that brut beautiful Darth Vader massacre, which saw the Sith Lord tear through Rebel soldiers as they desperately tried to hand off the plans to the Death Star.
Now, editor John Gilroy has confirmed the scene was added during the much-talked about reshoots the film underwent to perfect its third act.

The crowd-pleasing “Hidden Figures” might be based on a true story in an unknown chapter of American history, but not every detail was drawn from real life. The film follows a trio of Nasa mathematicians and engineers during the early sixties “Space Race” era, including Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughn and Janelle Monae as Mary Jackson, but it also required the invention of at least one crucial character.
To create the fictional role of Space Task rroup director Al Harrison, screenwriter Allison Schroeder used three different Nasa past chiefs – including two of Johnson’s own bosses – to round out the character. She gave special attention to the inclusion of personality traits from John Stack, a lauded Nasa aeronautical engineer who Schroeder billed as “kind of this perfect chauvinist feminist,” a forward thinker who was compelled by finding the best person for the job, no matter their race or gender.

“Step Brothers” is an all-time favorite among comedy lovers, and that apparently includes lauded French actress Marion Cotillard, who says she has watched the 2008 film starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly over and over again. Each time, she says, the ending makes her shed some tears.
“It might sound weird, but I always cry at the end of ‘Step Brothers.’ I’ve seen the movie ten times, and it still touches me at the end, when Will Ferrell sings. You don’t expect to cry watching that type of comedy, but I always do,” the “Assassin’s Creed” actress told “W Magazine,” which features her in its annual “Best Performances of the Year” issue.

Just a year after the theatrical release of Arnaud Desplechin’s film “My Golden Days,” a prequel to his 1996 film “My Sex Life… or How I Got into an Argument,” the French director returns with his next work “Ismaël’s Ghosts.” The film follows a director who goes mad and returns to his family home only to be besieged by the ghosts in his life. It stars Mathieu Amalric (“A Christmas Tale”), Charlotte Gainsbourg (“Melancholia”), Marion Cotillard (“Inception”) and Louis Garrel (“The Dreamers”). Marion Cotillard and her partner Guillaume Canet have reteamed to star in the film “Rock’n Roll.” This time the duo, who previously worked together on “Blood Ties” and “Little White Lies,” portray themselves in this meta showbiz comedy.
After Canet is told by a young co-star that he’s not “rock’n roll” enough and can’t sell films anymore, the actor then tries to prove her wrong by getting help from his wife and actress Marion Cotillard. The first trailer (via The Playlist) doesn’t include subtitles but it has enough fun scenes that show the actors in sticky situations, and helps you understand the narrative.

Disney Animation Studios' Moana topped a relatively quiet weekend at the North American box office with $18.8 million from 3,875 theaters in its third consecutive win. The only new film opening nationwide was Paramount's Office Christmas Party, an ensemble comedy earning a solid $17.5 million from 3,210 theaters.

Meet Ritchie Torres. At twenty-eight years old, the New York City Council member is the youngest elected official in New York City. Torres, a long-time resident of the Central Bronx, uses his own experiences and genuine, hard-won optimism to represent his constituents in a city that can be difficult to navigate. And Torres, for one, understands that truth on a deep and personal level.
The New Yorker has turned their spotlight on Torres in their latest original short film, the very appropriately named “The Youngest Elected Official in New York City,” which introduces its audience to Torres, his works and his attitude in snappy and charming fashion.

No false advertising here: Alexey Mizgirev’s historical epic, “The Duelist,” follows a professional duelist in 19th century Czarist Russia, a period of time that was punctuated by some of society’s most well-to-do families settling things literally the old-fashioned way, by employing professional fighters to face off in regulated duels. That’s one way to settle a disagreement. But there’s a bit more to it than that.
As the film’s official synopsis makes clear, “there was a strict code of behavior applied to the practice of duelling; one rule was that a substitute was allowed, another was that nobles would fight only fellow nobles.” Both of those code items become very, very important in the film.
Can you guess where this is going?

Mads Mikkelsen seems to be staying busy in the wake of the conclusion of his much-beloved television series “Hannibal,” including what looks to be a deceptively big role in the upcoming “Star Wars” spinoff film, “Rogue One,” and whatever the heck is going on in this new trailer for Hideo Kojima’s upcoming video game “Death Stranding.” Just try to parse this one.
As GameSpot quite amusingly describes it, the trailer opens with an “in-game version of what looked like film director Guillermo del Toro carrying a baby in an incubation chamber while hiding from the military.” And that’s not even the half of it. Surrogate Gdt manages to look quite dapper in the middle of what appears to be a massive military occupation of a large city, complete with weird substances, floating baby dolls and a tank that seems to be covered in sentient squid-guys.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn recently reconfirmed that there's a big Easter egg in the film that no one has found yet. I'm looking forward to the day when someone does find it and it's confirmed by Gunn himself.
While attending the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn both addressed the unfound Easter egg. During one of the the panels at the event, a fan got up a presented his theory on what the Easter egg might be. He said:

No surprise, gothic rocker Marilyn Manson felt right at home on the set of Wgn America’s period thriller “Salem.”
The show, which returns for its third season on Wednesday night, adds several new characters this season – including Manson as the sadistic barber/surgeon Thomas Dinley. The set for Dinley’s office includes strange, dangerous-looking surgical instruments and bottles of formaldehyde with things floating in it.
“He walked in and said, ‘Oh, I’ve got that at home, I’ve got that at home,'” said executive producer Brannon Braga. “He fit right in.”
Manson (who also produced the show’s theme song) plays a character based on the real-life 17th century barbers who would also slice patients open for surgery. “He’s kind of a cross between Vidal Sassoon and Jack the Ripper,” Braga said. “There’s a little Sweeney Todd in there. Playing video games probably tops the list of my favorite hobbies, and it’s not hard to see why. There’s no better time to be a fan of video games than right now; console and PC hardware is cheaper then ever, portable gaming has seen a huge boost in popularity thanks to the advent of smartphones, and exciting new tech like Vr and 4K displays allow us to interact with the medium in exciting new ways.
Still, as much fun as I have playing video games, I also like to talk about them, usually in the company of a few good friends and a couple of beers (though I’ll take long nights on gaming forums if need be). A staple of most lengthy discussions usually involves a conversation of a favorite game in a long-running series, and with some franchises having lifespans of over three decades, there’s...

When it comes to the long-running Battlefield series, the thought of multiplayer immediately springs to mind, and with good reason. For well over a decade, developer Dice has strived to perfect their unique take on the multiplayer shooter, and depending on who you ask, Battlefield stands as the king of online shooters, despite their lack of annual releases (which one can argue is a part of the series’ success).
Earlier this year, Dice and publisher Electronic Arts pulled back the curtain on Battlefield 1, which turned more than a few heads. Interesting naming conventions aside, the decision to turn back the clock to World War I was peculiar to say the least. As most first-person shooters continue to move into the future (both near and far), Battlefield 1’s setting stands in stark contrast to where the industry is headed as a whole.

The Austin Film Festival is working harder to connect three essential storytelling worlds this year. As a part of its commitment to writers, the fest has announced the lineup for its inaugural Playwriting Track, added to the already existing Writers Conference, happening Oct. 13–16. “House of Cards” creator and Oscar nominee Beau Willimon is set to premiere a staged reading of his unproduced play “War Story,” which revolves around two soldiers as they battle with the trauma of their pasts while looking to the future. “Aff is one of the few festivals in the country that focuses on writing, and it’s wonderful that they’re expanding their program to include playwriting,” said Willimon in a statement. “There’s been a close relationship between theater and film since the invention of cinema. Like many of my peers, I began my career in the theater and have worked with many theater artists...

Captain America: Civil War was a pretty major undertaking for Joe and Anthony Russo, not just in terms of the scope of the story they were telling, but actually wrangling the rather large group of actors who took part. Adapting the Civil War story was everyone's first choice, but as Robert Downey Jr. was in the process of negotiating a new deal with Marvel at the time, his... Read More...

Disclaimer: This editorial contains spoilers for Issues 1 & 2 of the Marvel crossover event, Civil War II.
In the words of singer Edwin Star, “War! What is it good for? Aboslutely noth’n”. This is exactly how I feel about the “Civil War” going within the Marvel Universe right now. Why would I feel that way? What can make me believe that a follow up companywide crossover to one of the biggest storylines for Marvel is “good for noth’n”? Well there quite a few reasons for such a conclusion, but first a little background on how Marvel works for those unaware.
Each year the great editors and writers of Marvel go off to a “retreat” where tons of ideas, plots, and concepts and just about anything for the company are discussed. This not so secret retreat has been going on for quite a few years with much of the focus apparently...

All Out War was just the beginning. Just when Rick and his band of survivors were making a nice life for themselves at Alexandria and the Hilltop, they are introduced to a new threat that made their encounter with Negan seem insignificant… The Whisperers. I won’t spoil things for those that haven’t read The Walking Dead #156, but tomorrow sees the start of The Whisperer War story arc that puts Negan back in the middle of the action.
Ahead of tomorrow’s first issue in what is sure to be a game-changing story arc, we have a look at new artwork from Arthur Adams & Nathan Fairbairn that paints a bloody picture of what’s to come.
The Whisperer War story arc covers issues 157 – 162 and each issue has an alternate cover from Arthur Adams & Nathan Fairbairn. When combined, it really gives a great look at the carnage to come. We...

Marvel Ultimate Alliance, both 1 and 2, are coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on Tuesday.
Both games are hitting PS4, Xbox One, and PC on Tuesday July 26th. You can buy each title for $39.99, or get them in a bundle for $59.99. Not bad considering the first game still has a second hand value of more than $30 anyways.
This information came during the Marvel games panel during San Diego Comic Con 2016. The games will be basically the same as you remember, but there are some improvements to Ui, visuals, and performance. Otherwise core mechanics and story are all identical to the previous releases.
The first game released back in 2006 and remains one of the best superhero titles in the video game universe. You can create a team from a huge assortment of Marvel heroes and then power through hundreds of enemies. The games brought a cast of over 140 Marvel characters together.

Rocket Raccoon better watch out, because he’s no longer the only trigger-happy furry little guy with nary a fuck to give in the big-budget sci-fi game. Enter Space Monkey, the cackling air gunner set to debut in Rogue One: A Star War Story and glimpsed briefly two minutes and five seconds into the behind-the-scenes video that debuted at last weekend’s Star Wars Celebration Europe:
Now, “Space Monkey” isn’t the creature’s official name. That’s just what Star Wars creature shop boss Neal Scanlan called him while showing off the animatronic creature during the “Star Wars Creatures, Droids & Aliens” panel last weekend. “He has a name but I’ve forgotten it,” Scanlan said, a delightful throwback to the days when Rick Baker was just grabbing leftover werewolf masks from his studio to fill up the background of the original Star Wars’ famous cantina scene. $200-million sequel “Independence Day: Resurgence” (20th Century Fox), among the most expensive summer 2016 releases, will test the idea that the public demands something new in a sequel in order to rush out to see it.
With the studio largely skipping pre-release screenings for domestic critics (London reviews were mixed), Fox is banking that two-decade-plus memories of the first film (whose star Will Smith did not return) and selling a surplus of action, effects and 3D beyond what was available in 1996 would give it life.
The first version was the biggest film of 1996, with an adjusted domestic gross of $594 million off a $97 million opening. That made it the fifth-ranked gross of the 90s, and until now was one of the few live-action blockbusters of recent years to lack a sequel.
Director Roland Emmerich went on to further success: six films with domestic grosses, again adjusted, over $100 million, led by “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Godzilla.

The McConnaissance is…not entirely back. “Free State of Jones,” which features Matthew McConaughey’s first major role since “Interstellar,” stars the Oscar winner in a role that should be tailormade for more awards glory: As the often overlooked and frequently forgotten Newton Knight, who launched his own insurrection during the Civil War, alongside free men and slaves alike. The film has been a long time passion project for director Gary Ross, but the final product has been labeled a misfire of a historical epic, one that goes for by-the-numbers miniseries plotting over actual passion, a film that can’t even capitalize fully on its stellar cast, which also includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Keri Russell.
Most critics aren’t big fans of the film, and even the ones who liked it — or at least gave it a positive review to warrant a “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes — don’t sound entirely...

Few shows have ever fallen from grace quite like Nic Pizzolatto’s HBO crime anthology drama “True Detective.” Its dense storytelling was always polarizing to viewers, but the dynamite performances of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson turned the project into more of a damaged relationship study than your routine crime story, and it’s the major reason critics and audiences went crazy for it. Without these performers in Season 2, the convoluted holes in Pizzolatto’s writing became very clear, and the show essentially became a parody of itself and the laughing stock of Golden Age TV Drama.

We Are Robin The Cradle
Now I know the answer to the question.
For years people have been asking me, what kind of laws would the Marvel or DC legislatures – federal, state, or local – have passed in light of the super-powered activities in their respective universes?
Now you know the question.
So, what’s the answer? Well, after what happened in the Robin War story that ran through several of the Batman family of books earlier this year, I deduced what the answer to that question must be. A two-thirds supermajority of Congress must have passed an amendment to the Constitution. Then a three-fourths supermajority of the fifty states ratified said amendment and the amendment became part of the Constitution, the supreme law of the land.
What did said amendment say? Again, based on what happened in “Robin War,” it must have said, “Hey, you know that whole Bill of Rights thing?...

It is possible that Avengers: Infinity War will present the culmination of what might be the most teased-out role in the history of cinema. Thanos has been presented as being the ‘Biggest Bad’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2012, when he made a brief appearance during the credit sequence of The Avengers. Here, he was played by Damion Poitier, and it was not until Guardians Of The Galaxy in 2014 that Josh Brolin assumed the supervillain mantle.
His part in Guardians Of The Galaxy was relatively small, however, though his presence loomed over proceedings like an unshifting shadow. Popping up once more during the credit sequence of Avengers: Age Of Ultron in 2015, we were teased again – making us familiar with his visage and omnipotence, but never really getting to know him. Josh Brolin recently spoke to Moviefone about his non-Marvel role in Hail, Caesar!, but took the opportunity to confirm that...

Last year, Marvel's Kevin Feige was finally given the control he wanted over the McU. It seems the behind the scenes battles weren't fun.
There was a sense, notwithstanding the fact that its films have banked $9bn at the global box office and counting, that all was not well behind the scenes at Marvel Studios. In particular, the constant rumours and reports that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter were not the best of chums.
In fact, that may be some understatement. The rarely-seen Perlmutter, according to reports, is a frugal man, and he had for some time a tight level of control over Marvel movies. Furthermore, a creative committee was in place, to oversee the plan for the Marvel cinematic universe. That committee had a reasonable amount of sway, it seems.

It's not often you see anyone in Hollywood roll the dice on mid-budget movie these days (even Michael Bay says so), but Stx Entertainment are the new players in town hoping to fill that gap. The studio was recently profiled in a piece for New Yorker, which breaks down their approach to greenlighting movies, and serves as a fascinating window in how Hollywood operates. So, how does a movie like "Free State Of Jones," a Civil War story, get greenlit? The first thing is getting an actor like Matthew McConaughey in a role suited to his talents. For most of his career as Captain America, Steve Rogers has had the moral high ground when it comes to the people he.s fighting. From battling the Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger to uprooting Hydra in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, his adversaries have always been people seeking to wreak destruction. For Captain America: Civil War, however, that won.t be the case, as the Star Spangled Avenger won.t have a clear-cut main antagonist to battle. Just like the original Civil War story, the 2016 blockbuster will see the McU.s superheroes taking different sides on registering with the government, and Chris Evans told Empire (via ComicBookMovie) that since the conflict is colored in shades of gray, the Star Spangled Avenger will have trouble knowing what to do. As anyone who.s read Ed Brubaker.s run of the Captain America comics knows, Steve Rogers met a gruesome fate following the original Civil War story, being gunned down shortly after surrendering himself to the authorities. Since this is the world of comics, Steve was back in action a few years later, but his "death" is still one of the more shocking moments in Marvel history. If a recent rumor is to be believed, that moment will be adapted next year in Captain America: Civil War. That said, this same rumor indicates that someone else will inherit the star spangled mantle during his absence. In...
