Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Last month, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. Now producer Ryan Turek has confirmed to ComicBook.com that The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson is coming back to direct The Black Phone 2.

Horror fans have been blessed with a bold new generation of Scream Queens, from “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega to Mia Goth of “X” and “Pearl,” to “Yellowjackets” stars Jasmin Savoy Brown and Sophie Thatcher, not to mention the women of “Fear Street,” Stranger Things” and Mike Flanagan’s deliciously spooky “Haunting of…” Netflix series.
Here’s some of our favorite final girls — and vicious villains — from recent horror films and TV series.

Soon after director Scott Derrickson’s Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (check out our review Here) was released last year, it was revealed that Derrickson and Hill were discussing the possibility of a sequel… Now Variety reports that Universal and Blumhouse have announced that The Black Phone 2 will be released on June 27, 2025 – and the intention is that this sequel will be the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”
The release date is the only information that has been shared about The Black Phone 2, but a social media post from Derrickson indicates that he is still involved with the project in some capacity. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s going to be directing the sequel, scripting it for another director, or producing it alongside Blumhouse. Speaking of sinister franchises, when a sequel to Derrickson’s film Sinister was made, he wrote the script for Sinister 2...

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

Scientifically, "Sinister" is the scariest movie of all time. The 2012 horror movie sees a has-been crime writer (played by Ethan Hawke) moving his family into a murder house while he investigates the case for a new book. He doesn't tell his wife or kids about the home's grisly history, and he finds a box of Super 8 home movies in his attic that indicate the house's much darker past. Each home movie has unsettling imagery -- with one in particular spiking heart rates higher than normal -- and each is key to the film's overall eerie atmosphere. It's the sort of modern-day chiller that makes the rounds at sleepovers, where kids dare each other to make it all the way to the end credits.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.
Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.
Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

Say what you will about the cinematic behemoth that is Marvel Studios, but the house that Kevin Feige built isn’t well known for turnover behind the scenes. Writers, directors, and performers generally seem to enjoy working for the pop culture juggernaut (which will undoubtedly soon incorporate the X-Men and therefore Juggernaut). As such, the trades are rarely filled with reports of that classic Hollywood divorce condition “creative differences.”
Still, every now and then Marvel and a creator just aren’t able to make it work. Those creative differences reared their ugly head with auteur Edgar Wright and 2015’s Ant-Man (which was eventually directed by Peyton Reed). Guardians of the Galaxy shepherd James Gunn was axed after a bad faith internet campaign to get him canceled, but cooler heads prevailed and Gunn is returning to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Director Scott Derrickson will adapt a Joe Hill short story called “The Black Phone” into a feature film for Blumhouse, according to Deadline. Derrickson is penning the screenplay with his regular writing partner, C. Robert Cargill, with whom he also wrote Sinister and Doctor Strange.
The story was initially published in Hill’s first book, a 2005 short story collection called 20th Century Ghosts that put the young author on the horror map before it was widely known that he was the son of Stephen King. The tale follows the plight of John Finney, a young boy kidnapped and held prisoner in the basement of a serial killer, who begins to communicate with his previous victims via a broken old phone.
For Derrickson, the project signifies a return to his moderate budget horror roots and to Blumhouse, with whom he teamed on 2012’s Sinister. The filmmaker directed his first film, the direct-to-video sequel Hellraiser: Inferno,...

The film stars Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone), Max Martini (13 Hours), Charlie Shotwell (All the Money in the World), Lili Taylor (Mystic Pizza), Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Deneen Tyler (Black and Blue), and Katia Gomez (Get Hard).

It’s October, and that means it’s horror movie season. Netflix is ready to scare your pants off with the streaming platform’s latest original horror movie, “Eli.” Check out the trailer below.
Directed by Ciarán Foy (“Sinister 2”), the film follows Eli (Charlie Shotwell from 2016’s “Captain Fantastic”), an 11-year-old boy with an auto-immune disorder who, sheltered from the dangerous environmental stimuli of the world, is checked into a “clean house” for treatment. But he soon discovers that the house is not just “clean” — it’s haunted. Think “Bubble Boy” meets “The Conjuring.” Similarities to the latter are reinforced by the presence of Lili Taylor (star of “The Conjuring” and the recently canceled Netflix series “Chambers”) in the film’s cast. Kelly Reilly (recently seen in TV’s “Yellowstone”) also stars.

Following his 2012 feature-length directorial debut “Citadel” and his 2015 sequel installment “Sinister 2,” which was the follow-up to Scott Derrickson’s Ethan Hawke-led original, Irish writer-director Ciarán Foy is now making his third return to the director’s chair with “Eli” – and we just got our first trailer for the project, though it’s been completed forever and delayed for almost a year (originally supposed to hit January 2019).

"Why do I feel worse?!" Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie horror film called Eli, the latest from acclaimed Irish filmmaker Ciarán Foy (of Citadel and Sinister 2). This hasn't premiered at any film festivals, but will be dropping right onto Netflix in a few weeks - just in time for the horror season. Eli is about a young boy named Eli, played by Charlie Shotwell, receiving treatment for his auto-immune disorder, who discovers that the house he's living isn't as safe as he thought. He moves into a "safe house" but starts to feel even worse, and starts to see some very creepy things. The full cast includes Kelly Reilly, Max Martini, Lili Taylor, Sadie Sink, Deneen Tyler, and Katia Gomez. This is a seriously freaky deaky little trailer. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ciarán Foy's Eli, from ...

Netflix has confirmed that a whopping 66 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in October. Leading off the lineup is the eagerly awaited “Breaking Bad” movie, which the streaming service is billing as a “television event.” Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises his role as Jesse Pinkman, who is on the run as his past catches up with him. The first half of the sixth and final season of the cult favorite “Bojack Horseman” will also drop this month.
Two features with awards buzz are coming to Netflix just weeks after their debuts at the Toronto film festival: “The Laundromat,” Steven Soderbergh‘s wry satire about international financial fraud that showcases Oscar darling Meryl Streep; and “Dolemite Is My Name,” a vehicle for Eddie Murphy who portrays 1970s comedian Rudy Ray Moore.

Netflix traditionally celebrates the Fall and Halloween season with a lineup of horror movies and television series, all under the umbrella term “Netflix & Chills.” We already saw some of the planned titles in our September roundup, but the new list reveals a more comprehensive selection, with the streaming service also dropping a teaser for Fall 2019 that has plenty for horror fans to sink their teeth into.

Like last weekend, this weekend features five new wide releases, and while we're forecasting Universal's Hobbs & Shaw will finish atop the weekend box office for the third straight weekend in a row, it could be challenged by at least three of the weekend's newcomers. Challengers for that #1 spot include Universal's R-rated comedy Good Boys, Sony's Angry Birds 2 (which debuted on Tuesday) and Entertainment Studios's 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. Alternatively, Uar's Where'd You Go, Bernadette and Warner's Blinded by the Light look to be in a dogfight for tenth position as neither appears they will break out from the pack. After a -58% drop last weekend and a second straight weekend at #1, Universal's Hobbs & Shaw could join Glass and Avengers: Endgame as the only films to top the weekend box office three weekends in a row in 2019. This weekend we're expecting a -48% drop and a three-day around $13 million...

Exclusive: Tom Arnold (True Lies), Jennifer Tilly (Liar Liar), Shannyn Sossamon (Sinister 2), Robert Carradine (Justice), Asif Ali (Wrecked) and Oscar-winner Cloris Leachman (The Last Picture Show) are set to star in stoner comedy High Holiday, which Fortitude International will launch at the Cannes film market.
The film will follow the free-spirited daughter of a conservative politician who, in a bid to lighten up her uptight family’s Christmas, brings weed-infused salad dressing to their Christmas Eve dinner. Chaos ensues when everyone gets unknowingly high and a special guest arrives to reveal the family’s innermost secrets.
The picture, which is currently in production in Los Angeles, was written by Larry Postel and is directed by Brian Herzlinger (My Date With Drew). Lucas Jarach and Eric Brenner are producing.
Doug Kramer and Jim Jacobsen are executive producing through their respective companies Muddy Shoe Productions and Skyline Entertainment, which fully financed the picture.

Even though we’ve been spoiled by the likes of It and Halloween (2018) in the past few years, it’s actually Sinister that remains my favorite horror flick released in our current decade. Not only was I drawn in by the sharply dressed Bughuul and his love for making home videos, but I absolutely loved the music included. In short, the picture delivered on multiple levels, at least in my view.
Unfortunately, its successor, Sinister 2, made $25 million less than its predecessor at the worldwide box office. As a result, a threequel is no longer on the table. Still, it’s worth mentioning that Blumhouse had been considering crossing over the franchise with Insidious. But given late developments, it looks like that won’t be happening, either.
During a recent Twitter Q & A, Jason Blum himself was asked by a fan if Sinister 3 was somehow still a possibility at the studio.

Paramount has sold the horror film “Eli” to Netflix, marking the third Paramount title in the past year that has been sold to the streaming company.
Directed by Ciaran Foy (“Sinister 2”), “Eli” follows a boy (Charlie Shotwell) who is receiving treatment for his autoimmune disorder, only to discover that the clinic he’s living in may not be as safe as he thinks. The film was set to be the second title released through the new Paramount Players label.
Netflix previously bought another Paramount horror film, “The Cloverfield Paradox,” and released it on Super Bowl Sunday this past February. The streaming service also bought the overseas distribution rights to the Natalie Portman sci-fi film “Annihilation,” with Paramount still releasing the film domestically. While it received critical acclaim, the $40 million film failed to make back its budget with $32 million grossed at the box office.

David Chirchirillo, Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing wrote the script. Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy produced Eli with John Zaozirny with Melinda Nishioka as Ep.

Even if some of their films haven’t been your cup of tea, none of us can deny the force in the industry that Blumhouse Productions has become. In the past decade or so, they’ve enthralled audiences with new franchises such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Ouija, The Purge and, my personal favorite, Sinister, to name but a few. Not only that, but they’ve managed to add the beloved Halloween series to their pantheon – and with a kick-ass score from John Carpenter to boot.

For those of you hoping that Chris Pratt would be cast as the adult version of Ben Hanscom in It: Chapter 2, that's not who they ended up casting. According to Deadline, director Andy Muschietti has cast Jay Ryan in the role. The younger version of the character was fantastically played by actor Jeremy Ray Taylor in the first film.
I'm not really familiar with Ryan's work, but the New Zealand actor is on the eOne/Hulu rights-to-die drama series Mary Kills People. He also played the lead in The CW Beauty and the Beast series.
It was recently announced that Andy Bean would play Stanley and James Ransone (Sinister 2) would be playing an adult version of Eddie. They all join the previously cast Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader, who will play Beverly, Bill, and Richie respectively. Bill Skarsgard will return as Pennywise.
It: Chapter 2 will be set 27 years after the first film.

The future of Sinister may lie with Insidious.
At least, that’s according to studio head Jason Blum, who revealed earlier this week that the mooted crossover may still come to fruition in the not-so-distant future. It’s by no means a sure thing, of course, as the Powers That Be will have to reunite many of the creative players from each respective franchise – for the record, Insidious is about to unlock The Last Key, while Sinister has quietly retreated to the shadows.
Despite gaining a fair amount of traction within horror circles, that rumored third instalment has ostensibly been shelved. Why, you ask? A good question that Screen Geek attempts to answer in its latest report, beginning with this quote from Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) from 2016:
Sure, yeah, I’d like there to be ten of them, but it really depends on how this turns out and how it does.
