Ishana Shyamalan has long been transfixed by the spell of folklore and the stories we leave only half-remembered. This was true of her work as a director on Servant, the cryptic Apple TV+ series executive produced by her father M. Night Shyamalan, and it’s true of her new horror film The Watchers, a movie set in the most menacing “enchanted forest” you’ll ever see. But for Ishana, it goes back even further than that.
“I think this particular mythology is something I connected very strongly to as a child,” Shyamalan says when we sit down with her ahead of The Watchers’ release this weekend, “in particular this darker take on it.” It is why she directly sought out material like A.M. Shine’s novel of the same name as the kind of source material she wanted for her directorial debut. It is why she found herself in search of Ireland.

Despite her age, Dakota Fanning may very well be one of the most experienced actors on any given set. Her big-screen career began at the mere age of seven when she shared scenes with Hollywood heavyweights like Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer in I Am Sam.
Justin Chatwin, Dakota Fanning and Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds (2005)
As Fanning takes on her latest role in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Watchers, it’s worth considering how her earlier experience in the horror genre, namely Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, may have influenced her acting approach. This latest foray into the supernatural with The Watchers offers an opportunity to explore the impact of those early experiences on Fanning’s acting repertoire.

Update: An 8 minute preview of The Watchers has just arrived online and can be seen in the embed above! The original article follows:
M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan has made her feature directorial debut with a thriller called The Watchers, which is set to receive a June 7th theatrical release, courtesy of Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema. During an interview with Games Radar, M. Night Shyamalan confirmed that he was his daughter’s second unit director on The Watchers, and that the experience changed him as a filmmaker.
The elder Shyamalan said directing second unit for his daughter was “the same job I’ve done my whole life but with a different intention. I have to deliver for [Ishana]. It’s not something I came up with; it’s something she came up with. That created a different engine for me, when I was directing those scenes for her.

Whatcha gonna do when “Bad Boys” comes for the box office? If you’re a theater owner, the answer is hopefully sell some tickets.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth installment in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, is targeting $30 million to $50 million from 3,850 theaters in its first weekend of release. As that cavernous range suggests, estimates vary greatly depending on whom you ask. Sony has offered the soft $30 million figure, while rivals and independent tracking services believe the $45 million to $50 million range is more likely.
Adding to opening-weekend ambiguity: The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock onstage at the 2022 Oscars. Have audiences soured on Smith or will they forgive and forget in favor of another “Bad Boys” reunion?...

While some parents try to shield their children from horror movies, you might have a different experience if your father is M. Night Shyamalan.
Ishana Night Shyamalan, the 24-year-old middle daughter of The Sixth Sense and Split director, celebrated the premiere of her own feature directorial debut The Watchers in New York on Sunday. Like her father before her, her first feature combines elements of the horror and fantasy genres. Shyamalan penned the script herself, adapting the story from the gothic horror novel of the same name by A.M. Shine.
The Watchers follows Mina (played by Dakota Fanning), an artist who finds herself held captive in an isolated house in the woods of Ireland with three strangers; the group is regularly observed by mysterious creatures through one-way glass.

During this year's CinemaCon back in April, audiences were given the first look at the feature directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, "The Watchers." Based on the novel of the same name from A.M. Shine, the story centers on an artist named Mina (Dakota Fanning) who gets stranded in the woods in western Ireland. Her only source of refuge is a strange box in the middle of a clearing, where the front wall is a gigantic one-way mirror. She suddenly realizes that she has been trapped with three strangers who have all been in the sanctuary known as "The Coop" for months themselves. Each night, mysterious creatures arrive outside The Coop to watch them from the outside. The group is unable to see the creatures, but the creatures see everything. The film's trailer has wisely kept any other plot details under wraps, allowing Shyamalan's film to entice audiences and creep them out to the fullest extent.

As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.

Horror has been one of the most reliable genres at the box office since the pandemic began. Even movies like "The Wretched" helped keep the industry's pulse going while most theaters were shut down in 2020. Unfortunately, 2024 has, up to this point, not produced a major break-out hit yet, with only indie success stories like "Immaculate" and "Late Night with the Devil" to celebrate. We've yet to have a "Smile" ($22.6 million domestic opening/$217 million global finish) or a "M3GAN" ($30.4 million domestic opening/$180 million worldwide). Lionsgate, however, hopes to change that with the release of "The Strangers: Chapter 1."
Directed by Renny Harlin, this is the first entry in a new trilogy of films that will reboot the franchise started by director Bryan Bertino in 2008 with his home invasion classic "The Strangers." As the title implies, "Chapter 1" is just the first entry in the trilogy, which has already been completely filmed.

Four months of horror releases down, eight to go! With our 2024 Horror Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the other horror movies we can’t wait to check out this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they’re likely to show up at some point in 2024. Here we go:

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer (pictured below), and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. Now the film’s August 9th theatrical release date is swiftly approaching, so today (a couple weeks after we saw the trailer), a poster for the movie has arrived online, along with an original song Saleka recorded for the movie, where she plays a pop star called Lady Raven. The poster can be seen at the bottom of this article, and you can listen to the Lady Raven song “Release” at LadyRavenMusic.com.

Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.
It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.
Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.
Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut feature The Watched is just a couple of months away. You can catch the film’s full trailer right here.
Following a brief teaser back in February, we now have a full trailer to mark the imminent release of The Watched – known as The Watchers in the US – the debut feature from Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of M Night Shyamalan.
The movie is an adaptation of Am Shine’s 2022 novel of the same name. Like her father before her, Shyamalan Jr has leaned into the power of mystery when it comes to marketing her film. The blurb reads that ‘Dakota Fanning stars as Mina, a 28-year-old artist, who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.’
Strangers. Mysterious creatures. An untouched location.

“The Watchers” is nearly here.
Based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine and written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the horror-thriller has just debuted a skin-crawling trailer, which you can watch above.
In “The Watchers,” Dakota Fanning plays a young woman who gets lost in the woods with her pet parrot. Soon, she starts hearing menacing noises and is ushered into a bunker by a kindly older woman (Olwen Fouéré). There, she meets two more people (Georgina Campbell and Oliver Finnegan), who tell her that they are being watched by otherworldly beings just outside the bunker walls. Is there any way to get out alive?

There are two twisty thrillers directed by filmmakers named Shyamalan heading to theaters in the coming months and the filmmakers promise “unease” and “wonder.”
It wasn’t intentional, said M. Night Shyamalan, sitting down for a conversation with his daughter and fellow filmmaker Ishana Night Shyamalan.
“It just played out this way,” he began, recounting the filmmakers’ conversations with Warner Bros., which is releasing both films. “It was just: What is the best date for that movie and what is the best day for this movie? And it turned out it was in the same summer.”
First up will be the June 14 release of “The Watchers,” the feature film directorial debut from Ishana Night Shyamalan, starring Dakota Fanning as part of a group of humans trapped in the woods who are visited by a mysterious audience every night. That will be followed by the Aug. 9 debut of her dad M.

Director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (“Servant”) horror movie The Watchers is coming to theaters on June 14, 2024, and New Line Cinema has released a brand new trailer today.
This full trailer for The Watchers gives us a much better idea of what’s going on here, while still retaining the core mystery at the center of the film. All we really know is that there’s a building in the center of the woods that’s observed on a nightly basis by… someone. Or something.

As Warner Bros. offers a deeper look at its upcoming thriller “The Watchers” with a new trailer, director Ishana Night Shyamalan told IndieWire at the recent Summer of Shyamalan event that audiences should be ready for more twists and turns when the film is released in June.
“It ultimately expands into a sort of dark fairy tale, fantasy essence. And that’s the thing I really love most of all,” said the filmmaker of her feature directorial debut starring Dakota Fanning as a woman who becomes trapped in the forests of western Ireland with three strangers, and is stalked at night by mysterious creatures. “In many ways, it’s using the horror genre to enter another space, and that becomes a surprise of the journey as well. So hopefully people will be vibing with it.”
In a Q&a at the April event, Shyamalan was especially proud to spotlight her quartet of actors.
