Vimeo announced today its acquisition of Ott subscription platform Vhx for an undisclosed sum.
Founded in 2011, Vhx offers distribution tech that has helped more than 1.5 million content creators gross roughly $9.6 million by selling content directly to their audiences. Some of its bold-faced titles include the Aziz Ansari standup special Dangerously Delicious as well as influencer-led films like Camp Takota and Expelled.
The acquisition of Vhx’s platform will bolster Vimeo’s own efforts to help creators build Svod services within its budding ecosystem of 280 million video-makers and viewers -- which it says includes individual creators, niche programmers, and major media entities.

The online self-distribution industry is heating up. Vhx, after two years in public beta, has officially opened to the public, offering anyone with a series, film, or other video project a flexible, cheap platform on which they can distribute their work. Vhx first launched in 2012 as a digital distribution platform open to a select few creators. Since then, it has served as the online home of several high-profile projects, including Aziz Ansari's Dangerously Delicious, Improv Everywhere's We Make Scenes, and Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, and Mamrie Hart's Camp Takota. It jump-started its plan to expand out of beta last August, when it raised a $3.2 million funding round for its public debut. As part of its official launch, Vhx is offering its users a price cut. Instead of the 15-20% cut it previously skimmed off the top, it is now taking just 10%, plus a 50 cent fee for each transaction.

In his first two stand-up specials, Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening and Dangerously Delicious, Aziz Ansari includes his views on what it's like to attend R. Kelly concerts and do private shows for Kanye West. But the Parks and Recreation star recently turned 30, and on his new special Buried Alive (arriving on Netflix tomorrow), he turns his comedic lens on deeper subjects, like love, relationships, marriage and parenting. Gone are the ho-hum observations on life; while continuing to deliver hour-plus sets full of punchlines, it feels more like social...

Aziz Ansari's new comedy special "Buried Alive" arrives exclusively on Netflix this Friday, November 1st at 12:01am Pt, a stand-up concert film shot at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia during the "Parks and Rec" star's 2013 tour. The writer, executive producer and star of the special (which was directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern of "Shut Up and Play the Hits") joined members of the press on a call earlier this month. Having immensely matured since his last specials, "Dangerously Delicious" and "Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening," Ansari has an entire new slew of topics to discuss and plenty more ground to cover. Ansari, now 30 years old, has entered a new stage in his life. His stand-up no longer solely consists of stories of awkward encounters or hanging out with Kanye West. Now the comedian gives insight on his personal life, pending adulthood, babies and love in the modern era.

Aziz Ansari is the latest comedian to bring his work to Netflix, and the Parks and Recreation funnyman is making sure his fans get the memo. Ansari has enlisted the help of Seth Rogen, who discusses promotional tie-ins with him in a trailer for the comedy special. In the video, released on Netflix's official YouTube account, Ansari and Rogen think up ways they can match the success Jay-z found when he tied-in the Samsung Galaxy mobile device to the release of his album Magna Carta Holy Grail. Rogen believes Ansari can match this success if he releases his special in bags of Bugles, but Aziz has his heart (and his stomach) set on a branded deal with Toaster Strudel. Check out the full bit below: Ansari announced his intention to distribute via Netflix at the end of August. He explained then that it "seems like it’s the closest delivery...

Aziz Ansari has already produced two successful stand-up specials: Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening and Dangerously Delicious, so it’s no surprise he’s trying to think of a fun hook for his upcoming third comedy release. The answer? Product placement tie-in.Joined by Seth Rogen, Ansari, inspired by Samsung-sponsored Jay-z, flirts with Bugles chips and Toaster Strudel a.k.a. Pilsbury Toaster Tablet as comedy launching vehicles, before realizing they have some drawbacks. He finally settles with the much-less-exciting-but-much-healthier-to-binge-on Netflix. This isn’t the first time a comedian has released a stand-up special straight to the streaming site,...

A pay-to-view online video platform is following the lead of several competitors and providing creators with a service through which they can sell content directly to fans. Vhx, which had previously only offered videos from select creators, has raised a $3.2 million funding round that will allow it to expand and accommodate all self-starters wishing to profit directly from their work. Vhx launched in 2011, and it launched its most notable release in March 2012 when it powered the exclusive distribution site for Aziz Ansari's comedy special, Dangerously Delicious. Since then, however, the online video pay-to-view landscape has become quite crowded. Platforms like Chill Direct and Yekra have given high-profile comedians and directors more distribution options, fundraising sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have seen increased popularity and efficacy, and Patreon and Subbable have used subscription-based donations to provide for online video creators. With so many options, Vhx has decided to market itself...

Comedian Aziz Ansari has nabbed $3.5 million to write a book about the perils of dating in the 21st century, according to Publisher's Weekly. Everyone seems to have pointed out that this is just below Lena Dunham's infamous $3.7 million paycheck for her memoirs, so there's that.

The subject has been of particular interest to Ansari as of late. His last special, "Dangerously Delicious," heavily featured personal material about his feelings on love and relationships. Indeed, in a statement, Ansari said of his book: "You know when you text someone you're romantically interested in and you don't hear anything back and then you see them post a photo of a pizza on Instagram? That's exactly what I want this book to deal with.
