Miley Cyrus became a superstar after playing the titular role in Disney Channel’s teen musical sitcom “Hannah Montana,” which ran from 2006 to 2011. But Cyrus wasn’t the only young actor who was considered for the lead role.
According to Aj Michalka, who comprises one half of the sibling pop duo Aly & Aj, former Disney Channel head Gary Marsh originally offered the part to her sister, Aly Michalka. Aj also claimed that the part of Lilly Truscott, Hannah’s best friend, was offered to her.
Aj shared the information in a post from the duo’s joint Twitter account, which references “Hannah Montana” casting director Lisa London, who revealed other actors considered for the lead role in a viral TikTok video.

HBO Max has a lot to offer in August, with titles to look forward to including the premiere of a brand new Seth Rogen movie called “An American Pickle” on Aug. 6, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” out Aug. 1.
The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.
Leaving throughout the month include, tragically, all eight “Harry Potter” films, which will be gone after Aug. 25. Other absolute classics like “Good Will Hunting,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and both “Kill Bill” movies will be gone after Aug. 31, so watch them while you can.

HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.
A highlight for many users will probably be the glut of Batman films coming to HBO Max at the start of the month. Every cinematic outing for the Caped Crusader from 1989’s Batman starring Michael Keaton to 2008’s The Dark Knight with Christian Bale (which just celebrated its 12th anniversary this weekend) are going up on the site. Sticking in Gotham, both seasons of Harley Quinn are also coming to HBO Max, following their original release on DC Universe.

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

Writer-director Brad J. Silverman’s “Selfie Dad” is a pleasantly predictable faith-based dramedy that has been scheduled and marketed for family viewing over Father’s Day weekend on VOD platforms. As it turns out, however, the timing of its release might actually serve to expand the film’s appeal slightly beyond the usual target audience for similar fare. Indeed, in the context of recent real-life events and Black Lives Matter protests, certain elements of Silverman’s narrative give his film, if only inadvertently, a slightly sharper edge than even he likely intended.

The traditional fall season of award-season releases gets a late start on Friday with “Moonlight” (A24) and “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia) leading the way. It can’t come a moment too soon.
This weekend, top-quality films “Certain Women” (IFC), “Christine” (The Orchard), “Miss Hokusai” (Gkids) and “Aquarius” (Vitagraph) competed in limited openings. All nabbed good or better reviews. But none scored at the level likely to lead to the sort of wider response and multi-million grosses that normally come along regularly at this time of year.
The weakness can be seen among later-week grosses as films expand. There hasn’t been a breakout crossover release of any significance since “Hell or High Water” (Lionsgate), which is still grossing better than most recent releases.
“Shin Godzilla” (Funimation) showed strength with a midweek opening in a mixed plan of bookings. Similar to “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” (Abramorama), out-of- the-box distribution seems to be finding positive results.

Good things come to those who wait. After two seasons of stealing every scene in which she’s been present, Aj Michalka has been promoted to a series regular on The Goldbergs ahead of the show’s third season. Michalka, who plays Erica’s best friend and Barry’s girlfriend, Lainey Lewis, has been recurring on the show since Season 1, and her promotion comes after a largely increased focus on the supporting cast in the semi-autobiographical show from the real Adam Goldberg. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the casting news. The third season of The Goldbergs will feature Aj Michalka’s first time as a regular on television. Also a singer-songwriter and member of music duo 78violet with her sister Aly, Aj has been featured in multiple episodes of The Guardian, Hellcats, and Oliver Beene, and she has also appeared on the big-screen in Super 8 and Grace Unplugged.

It's almost September, which means a whole new slew of titles on Netflix! August proved pretty lucrative on the quality title front, but it looks as though September it's going to blow the rundown out of the water.
TV takes spotlight this month, with the latest full seasons of "The Walking Dead," "New Girl," "The League," "The Blacklist," "Arrow," "Bones," and "Parks and Recreation" primed and ready for streaming before their fall premieres. And fans still mourning the loss of "How I Met Your Mother" (in more ways than one) can rewatch the ninth and final season to their heart's content. Ah, memories. Showtime's recently departed "Californication" can be seen in its entirety (Seasons 1 -7) as well, starting September 1. That's a lot of TV.
Movie fans have plenty to look forward to from Netflix in September, too. Sam Raimi's undersung 1998 thriller "A Simple Plan" hits the streaming service September...

It must be difficult for Christian consumers to find media that affirms their values while simultaneously competing with Hollywood in nearly every other department that makes their product easily exported worldwide, struggle as the Christian film industry has to produce a hit with mainstream audiences. That’s not to say that Grace Unplugged is that hit, but it demonstrates a burgeoning understanding on the part of Christian film-makers of what it’s going to take to forge an industry that can sustain itself. It won’t break through in and of itself, but it’s among the first to feel as if it could have been made by a (very sympathetic) outsider.

When you die and go to heaven will you really see your late loved ones, sit on Jesus’ lap, and get serenaded by angels? That’s exactly how Colton Burp described his trip to the afterworld after an out-of-body experience when he was four years old. His father Todd, a pastor in Imperial Nebraska, shared his son’s experience in the family-friendly book Heaven Is For Real which was a surprise best-seller on the Christian circuit and now here comes the film version. Heaven Is For Real is as wholesome and square as it sounds. No profanity. No sex. No violence. That’s its hook. Unpretentious and plainspoken, it knows its target Christian audience well.
The plot of Heaven Is For Real is disarmingly simple and there appears to be no question regarding the general circumstances themselves. The Burpos are a classic wholesome American family from the heartland, hardworking and faithful.

Young-adult adaptation Divergent got off to a strong start yesterday, and is now on pace for an opening weekend north of $50 million. Meanwhile, Christian drama God's Not Dead is shaping up to be a surprise box office hit. Playing at 3,936 locations, Divergent opened to an estimated $22.8 million on Friday. That includes $4.9 million from late Thursday shows. While that opening day figure is nowhere close to Twilight ($36 million) or The Hunger Games ($67.3 million), it's still one of the best young-adult debuts ever.If Divergent plays like The Hunger Games, it will wind up with around $52 million for the weekend. That seems likely, given the demographic breakdown: the movie attracted more men than expected (41 percent), and was split evenly between those over and under 25 years of age. Combine that with an "A" CinemaScore, and Divergent may not be as frontloaded as its genre and poor reviews suggested.Opening at 3,194 theaters, Muppets Most Wanted disappointed with $4.7 million.

All Is Lost Well, while I wish more people would have seen it in theaters, I'm happy more people will likely see All is Lost now that it's available on DVD and Blu-ray as Roadside didn't exactly give the film a widespread release. Granted, by this time it seems the line has been drawn as to whether you're going to harshly judge the film on its nautical merits or run into issues if it has been hyped up too much in your mind. All I say is give the film a fair shake. Rent it, turn off the lights, silence your phone and just watch for 106 minutes and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Ender's Game Not bad, but not great makes Ender's Game a film I expect more people will see (and probably enjoy) on DVD and Blu-ray than ever would have in theaters. I expect I'll catch this...

"Duck Dynasty," "Shark Tank" and "The Bible" were among the big TV winners at the 22nd Annual Movieguide Faith & Values Awards on Friday (Feb. 7). But what exactly are these awards?
Organized by Movieguide publisher Ted Baehr, the Faith & Values Awards reward spiritual seriousness in Hollywood by analyzing films and TV shows according to biblical theology and negative factors (worldviews that are pagan, occult, humanist or derived from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a Genevan philosopher).
The ceremony, held at the Hilton Universal City, was filmed for a one-hour Reelz Channel special set to air March 1 as counter-programming to the Oscars. Below is the full list of film and TV series who were honored at the event.
$100,000 Epiphany Prize for Most Inspiring Television Program of 2013: "The Bible"

Two limited films in fewer than 500 theaters-- the Mexican "Pulling Strings" (Lionsgate/Pantelion) and Fox Searchlight's "Enough Said"-- made the top 10 this weekend as "Gravity" soared across the country with substantial adult audience support. Two new mid-level releases, the Christian-themed "Grace Unplugged" (Roadside Attractions) and "Parkland" (Exclusive/Millennium) yielded modest results in their mostly non-art house debuts. The basketball doc "Linsanity" and Chinese drama "A Touch of Sin" were the standouts among more limited releases, with no other fresh films having much strength. Twenty-eight new films actually opened this week in at least one of the two biggest markets. Several of the more notable newbies --IFC's "The Summit," Magnolia's "Bad Milo!," Anchor Bay's "Argento's Dracula 3D," Strand's "I Used to Be Darker" and "The Missing Picture," Phase IV's "The Dirties" -- most with impressive major festival pedigrees - haven't reported yet. Opening "Linsanity" (Ketchup...

With an aggressive marketing campaign and stellar reviews, Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity is poised to easily take first place this weekend. The real question at this point is how high it can go, though it's hard to imagine an original Fall release debuting above $40 million or so. Runner Runner also opens this weekend, though it's unlikely that the Justin Timberlake/Ben Affleck thriller puts much of a dent in Gravity's grosses.Opening at 3,575 locations, Gravity stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts who are stranded in orbit after their shuttle is destroyed. Advertisements for the movie put the astronauts in all kinds of precarious situations, which has nicely showcased the movie's stunning visuals and intense, high-stakes thrills. As of late, commercials have also emphasized the movie's reviews, which are nothing short of fantastic (it currently has a 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes). If there's any complaint to be made about the marketing,...

This weekend, the movies take you on a thrilling trip through space in "Gravity," the underground world of gambling in "Runner Runner," and on a surreal rock-and-roll journey in "Metallic: Through the Never."
In Alfonso Cuaron's ("Children of Men") space epic "Gravity," Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Cloony) are faced with every space traveler's worst nightmare: a deadly soaring field of debris, a destroyed space shuttle, and a dwindling oxygen tank. With mind-blowing visuals, a critically praised performance from Bullock, and a heart-racing series of events, "Gravity" is the must-see big screen event that will get your palms sweating this weekend. (Just remember to take some deep breaths).
In "Runner Runner' Justin Timberlake plays a broke college student who turns to online poker to pay off tuition bills. (Don't do it, kids.) When he gets cheated out of his money, Timberlake's Richie Furst...
