The script is based on Éric Reinhardt's 2014 novel "L'Amour et les Forêts" (which is also the French title), which translates as "Love and forests".
Before writing the script, writer/director Valérie Donzelli already had actress Virginie Efira in mind for the part of Blanche, so she gave her a copy and the book and she quickly accepted. However, she didn't have anybody in mind for the part of Grégoire; Melvil Poupaud was cast much later.
"Just the two of us" was part of the "Cannes Première" Selection at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
The shooting took almost two months between early April and early June 2022. It was mostly shot in Paris, and on location in Normandy for the exterior scenes: in Honfleur and around Le Havre and Caen.
