A landscape gardener and his estranged daughter go on a therapeutic road trip to battle substance abuse in this unbearably cute nepo vanity project
Ewan McGregor co-stars with his daughter Clara McGregor in this avowedly personal story of a guy going on a road trip with his estranged 20-year-old daughter from his first marriage, dealing with trust and intimacy issues, and their own previous battles with substance abuse. In theory, it should be possible to do a film like this without it being a complete toe-curling nepo vanity project. I, for example, very much enjoyed Flag Day, the film Sean Penn made with his daughter Dylan. But this unbearably cute joint selfie of a movie is gruesomely indulgent and entitled from the first; it allows Ewan McGregor little or no opportunity to show his natural wit and flair and there is oddly no real chemistry between him and his co-star.

The musical legend of Leonard Bernstein was very much of interest to Emmy-winning editor Michelle Tesoro (“The Queen’s Gambit”). But what really drew her to Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” (Netflix) was the complicated love story, spanning four decades, between Lenny (Cooper) and Chilean-American actress Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Theirs was a rocky 25-year marriage that descended into a divided life consumed by his enormous appetite for music, fame, and same-sex lovers.
“The love story was more attractive to me in terms of telling a story and finding a way for people to connect with these iconic people,” Tesoro told IndieWire. “Love comes in many different forms: how we accept it, and how it functions in our lives is not always a romantic love. It’s that ‘you can’t always get what you want, but you get what you need’ type of thing. But then how do you deal with a life like that,...

After the Cannes cancellation of 2020 and the delay of 2021, the 2022 Official Selection reflects a return to normal: a balance of class (potential for high quality) and crass (potentially strong financial afterlife). Last year was another story: Cannes produced an excellent lineup that American audiences largely ignored.
Much of that came down to timing. Covid postponed last year’s Cannes to July 2021 and, after Cannes being canceled altogether in 2020, there was a backlog of excellent titles waiting for their moment on the Croisette. However, studio films were all but absent; their distributors didn’t have much interest in spending to promote their titles in July.
Led by “Drive My Car,” the films of Cannes 2021 showed unprecedented dominance in year-end critics’ surveys, including four of the top six in the IndieWire critics’ poll, four of the top five from Sight and Sound, and six of the top 10 at Cahiers du Cinema.

While putting his life back together following a suicide attempt, an unstable young man named Franklin (James Morosini) meets a girl online who starts to make him feel better. Her name is Becca, she’s way prettier than he thinks he deserves, and she seems really interested in him. How or why this person chose Franklin, out of all the incels on Facebook, doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. Life seems to be looking up, and yet Franklin’s right to be skeptical. Because he is being catfished. By his father.
Writer-director-star Morosini’s funny, cringey, all-too-credible dramedy “I Love You Dad” really happened. “My dad asked me to tell you it didn’t,” claims an onscreen chyron at the outset, but it’s too good a story to pass up. Thandiwe Newton Slams Sean Penn’s Comment About Men Being Too ‘Feminized’: ‘You’re a Jibbering Fool’
Thandiwe Newton has officially weighed in.
The “Westworld” star slammed Sean Penn via Twitter after Penn voiced his criticisms on modern gender roles.
Penn previously said in an interview with The Independent that he is “in the club that believes that men in American culture have become wildly feminized.”
Penn continued, “I don’t think that being a brute or having insensitivity or disrespect for women is anything to do with masculinity, or ever did. But I don’t think that [in order] to be fair to women, we should become them…I have these very strong women in my life who do not take masculinity as a sign of oppression toward them. There are a lot of, I think, cowardly genes that lead to people surrendering their jeans and putting on a skirt.”

Thandiwe Newton took a stand against Sean Penn after the actor and filmmaker made headlines for comments about men becoming too feminized in American culture. The “Milk” and “Mystic River” Oscar winner said in an interview with The Independent last week that it’s a “cowardly gene” that leads men to wear skirts.
“Dude what are you saying?” Newton wrote on Twitter in reaction to Penn’s comments. “Like for real? You’re a jibbering fool…you used to be sexy but now you’re just tragic.”
The “Crash” and “Westworld” star added, “In front of your daughter!? That poor little mite. Thank God her Mum’s so dope. Please stop ruining the brilliance of ‘Licorice Pizza’ with this nonsense.”

Sean Penn is getting a lot of attention for comments he made yesterday in the Independent while promoting his latest film, Flag Day.
The project is Penn’s latest directorial effort, one in which he also stars with real-life daughter Dylan Penn. Based on the autobiographical Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life written by Jennifer Vogel, Flag Day is about the unique bond between a daughter and a messed-up but charismatic father, John Vogel, who spent years in prison for a bank robbery, was a grand schemer and dreamer, and who became the most notorious counterfeiter in U.S. history, single-handedly faking over $20 million.

Sean Penn wants you to know he’s a macho man. The actor recently told iNews that he thinks American men have been “wildly feminized” and doubled down on his comments Thursday, criticizing men who choose to wear skirts.

Sean Penn doubled down in an interview with The Independent on his belief that “men have become quite feminized.” The two-time Oscar winner generated headlines earlier this month after telling one newspaper, “I am in the club that believes that men in American culture have become wildly feminized. Honors were given out in more than 30 categories at Wednesday’s 12th annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, with singer-songwriters like Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Adam Levine and Rufus Wainwright being celebrated in the live webcast as well as composers including Hans Zimmer, Rachel Portman, Alberto Iglesias and Nicholas Britell.
The HMMAs reward songwriters, composers and even performers in fields that include not just film and TV work but everything from video games to commercials to theme park music.
Film nominations are given in multiple genres, which allows for a series of short lists that members of the Academy’s music branch may end up studying as they vote for the Oscars’ much, much shorter lists.
Best score for a feature film went to Britell for his work on Adam McKay’s satirical “Don’t Look Up.” Other score prizes went to Zimmer for “Dune” (sci-fi/fantasy film), Beltrami for “A Quiet Place II...

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will re-team in early 2022 for their first tour together in nearly 11 years, Variety can exclusively reveal. The performances will take place next March to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the movie “Once,” which starred the duo and featured their original music. The film’s “Falling Slowly” won the 2007 Academy Award for best original song; a hit Broadway musical adaptation later won eight Tony Awards, including best musical, in 2012.
Following the release of the film version of “Once,” Hansard and Irglova recorded and toured as The Swell Season, but have only made a handful of onstage appearances together in the past decade. The upcoming shows will feature material from both “Once” and The Swell Season, as well as the pair’s respective solo careers.
The tour comes at a time when “Once” remains a cultural touchstone, having been referenced in a recent Christmas-themed episode of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.

Best original song Oscar contenders Beyoncé and Van Morrison are among those who received nominations in the visual media categories at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (Hmma). Composers Hans Zimmer and Nicholas Britell were included among the familiar names picking up nods in the score categories.
The awards will be presented Nov. 17. The HMMAs honor composers, songwriters, and music supervisors for their work in music for film, television, and videogames.

The fest will also have a virtual component. Student filmmakers are turning out to volunteer in numbers that have “happily surprised” and exceeded the expectations of Christina Routhier, longtime executive and artistic director of Scad theaters and festivals.
“We have had such a great turnout and all of our volunteer meetings, and I think we’re going to be just fine,” Routhier says. “In regards to volunteer numbers, it hasn’t been as much as it has in years past: we have at least 400 to 500 volunteers where we would normally have 600 to 700. Jez Butterworth will adapt Don DeLillo’s “The Silence” for the screen, Variety has learned. Producer Uri Singer, who is also producing and helped put together Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of another DeLillo novel, “White Noise,” has secured the rights to the book, which was published in 2020.
“The Silence” unfolds at a dinner party in Manhattan during Super Bowl Sunday in the year 2022. The diners include a retired physics professor, her husband and her former student. The end of August is known for its box-office doldrums, exhibition continues to face a dark time — and Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” scored an estimated $22,370,00 in its initial domestic weekend, beating the lowball projection of $15 million by nearly 50 percent.
That success testifies to the enduring appeal of the 1992 horror film, but it’s not the only good news: The #2 film, “Free Guy” (Disney), dropped only 27 percent in its third weekend.
All told, the weekend grossed $63 million. That’s about the same as last week and it represents 58 percent of the same weekend in 2019. Our ongoing comparative four-week rolling average increased slightly, to 56 percent of the same 2019 period. That’s the highest number since mid-July.
Here are a couple of standout comparisons for “Candyman.” Two years ago, “Angel Has Fallen,” the third film in Lionsgate’s action franchise, opened the same weekend to $21 million. At that time, it was considered an excellent result for the date.

Americana Trauma: Penn Returns with Hysterical Melodrama
After the formidable misfire of his last directorial effort The Last Face (2016), Sean Penn unfortunately doesn’t fare much better with his labor-of-love follow-up Flag Day, ‘based on a true story’ from the memoir Film Flam Man by Jennifer Vogel. A film about an ‘unique’ familial dysfunction in America’s heartland, Vogel’s woe is horribly maligned in a script from Brit scribe Jez Butterworth and the clearly out of touch Penn, who casts daughter Dylan Penn in curiously underwhelming lead role, which he usurps most suspiciously whenever he’s also on screen.
Like an overworked Sam Shepard melodrama beneath the hubris of a John Huston lens, Penn apes all his favored darlings for this seedy beat caricature which can’t quite hit the high notes of the trauma porn it aims to be.…...

Sean Penn is thrilled his new movie, “Flag Day,” is exclusively releasing in theaters, but only wants vaccinated people to go see it.
“I do always feel, at this point in time, that I have to say that I hope — I’d ask — that as much as I want people all to go to the theater, I really only want people who are vaccinated and safe to themselves and each other to go,” he told NBC’s Seth Meyers Monday night. “It will stream.”
He added, “Most of the people who aren’t vaccinated probably aren’t interested in my movies, anyway.”
Penn is directing and starring in “Flag Day,” out last Friday, with his daughter, Dylan Penn.
“If I’m interested in seeing a film, I don’t want the convenience of the small box when something was — like ‘Flag Day’ was — made for the big screen,” he told Meyers.

Dylan Penn, the young actor of Sean Penn’s “Flag Day” which competed at Cannes, will be receiving the Hollywood Rising-Star Award at the upcoming Deauville American Film Festival.

Penn, who is the daughter of Sean Penn and Robin Wright, received critical acclaim for her performance in “Flag Day,” in which she held her first major role as Jennifer Vogel. “Nobody knows anything,” screenwriter William Goldman famously wrote about studio production in the opening line of his 1983 memoir. That sentiment is apparent more than ever as distributors and theaters grapple with the challenges of releasing movies right now.
Four new wide releases opened this weekend, an unusually high number. “Paw Patrol” (Paramount), transferring the popular kids TV animated show to the big screen, is also streaming on Paramount+, free for subscribers. With a gross of $13 million, it will gross $5 million more than what the other three new films — two of them theater exclusives — will do.
But #1 this time around, and in its second weekend, is “Free Guy” (Disney) at $18.8 million. It’s in theaters only, and expected to continue as such for the duration of its theater play.
It held up well with only a 34 percent drop. Why the strong holdover? Most likely because of the ongoing positive public response...

Sean Penn remains committed to his previous comments that the Covid-19 vaccine should be mandatory for all.
“I am so grateful that audiences — and yes, we’ll come around to that I would request only vaccinated audiences — have an opportunity to see this theatrically,” the actor told CNN’s Michael Smerconish in an interview about his film “Flag Day.” “It’s rare these days to have something that is exclusively theatrical. Eventually it will stream, and that’s a better time for the unvaccinated to see it, though I think I’ll probably offend them out of that choice.”
Penn made his stance clear in July, when he stated that he would not return to the set of “Gaslit,” the Watergate drama in which he plays attorney general John Mitchell, until the entire crew was vaccinated. And at the Aug. 11 premiere of his new film “Flag Day,” Penn said, “I...

Flag Day is a significant film for Sean Penn in two different ways. First of all, it’s the first film he’s both directed and starred in. Also, it’s the first film he’s made with his daughter, Dylan Penn. While she was literally born to play the character — she plays the daughter of Penn’s character […]

United Artists Releasing opens Flag Day, directed and starring Sean Penn, in a uneven specialty market where the Delta Variant spike has theaters in key cities requiring proof of vaccination, theaters are hard to book, and hits have been rare since the industry reopened.
Eventually “We’ll crack the code, because good movie and good stories win out.” said Erik Lomis, President, Distribution at Uar. Older demos — the meat-and-potatoes of arthouse — “are less comfortable coming back than we all hoped. It’s a tough, tough market to crack… but there’s nothing like seeing it in a movie theater.”
The film from MGM Studios premiered at Cannes and debuts in 24 theaters in 10 markets. It expands next weekend to 24 markets and 50 theaters. “We’ll continue to roll out like that until we really step on the gas depending upon market conditions,...

MGM is releasing “Flag Day” exclusively in theaters on August 20, because Michael De Luca is still running the studio — until the sale to Amazon goes through. A decade ago, he had fallen in love with the Jez Butterworth (“Ford v. Ferrari”) adaptation of Jennifer Vogel’s novel about her con man father. After two-time Oscar-winner Sean Penn finally directed and starred in the independent film, De Luca snapped it up. An old-fashioned, ’70s-inflected, intense father-daughter drama shot on super-16mm, “Flag Day” was made in defiance of contemporary movie conventions. After A.G. Iñárritu and other directors fell out over the years, producer William Horberg (“The Queen’s Gambit”) kept trying to get the film financed until Penn, who had been circling it as either actor or director, finally convinced his daughter Dylan to take on the role of the young journalist who tangles with her father.
