Holly, a 15-year-old girl, appears to develop clairvoyance and magical healing powers — or does she? — in Belgian director Fien Troch’s intriguing, ambiguous fifth feature, Holly. Anchored by a charismatic yet impressively subtle lead performance by Cathalina Geeraerts, the film flirts with different genres, and at various stages looks poised to emerge as a teen-themed horror show like Carrie or a didactic dramatization of the evils of bullying. Ultimately it ends up being neither of those things and evolves into a sly black comedy about the impossibility of truly unselfish altruism.
That tonal complexity may make it a little harder to love for audiences who crave easy answers, rootable-for characters and cut-and-dry moral dilemmas, but this should find its own niche on the festival circuit and beyond.

Rihanna has been cast in the voice role of Smurfette in a new live-action hybrid feature from Paramount Animation, “The Smurfs Movie.” The superstar made a surprise in-person appearance at CinemaCon, Las Vegas’ annual convention of movie theater owners, to make the announcement on Thursday.
“I tried to get the Papa Smurf role but It didn’t work out,” the singer joked on stage at Caesar’s Palace Hotel and Casino, alongside Paramount Animation head Ramsey Naito. It was revealed that Rihanna will star, write and record original songs, and produce the upcoming project. Clad in a stonewash denim cape, she also confirmed she is in her third trimester of pregnancy with her second child.
The film, according to Naito, will explore themes of identity and ask the central question, “What is a Smurf?”
Rihanna previously lent her voice to the DreamWorks animated feature “Home,” which grossed over $380 million at the worldwide box office.

After the success of its Celebration of Black Cinema events for the past three years, the Critics Choice Association said Tuesday it is expanding the series with the inaugural Celebration of Latino Cinema, which will honor icons Rita Moreno, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Demián Bichir along with a group of additional honorees, many associated with upcoming 2021 films, still to be announced.
The new Celebration, to be presented virtually, is set for Thursday December 9, 2021 and aims to put a spotlight on the contributions of great Oscar-winning and -nominated artists like that initial trio, but also Latino filmmaking in general, a facet of the motion picture industry that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves during awards season. Among other things, the Cca’s Celebration of Latino Cinema aims to change that.

Amazon saw second-quarter net sales of $113 billion, up 27% but below expectations, dinging the shares, which fell more than 7% in late trading.
Consumers still shopped a lot on Amazon but growth was tempered as the world reopened — compared with the year-ago quarter when the global pandemic was at its height.
Net profit came in at a strong $7.8 billion, or $15.12 a share — up from $5.2 billion or $10.30.
Subscriptions services, which includes annual and monthly fees associated with Amazon Prime memberships, as well as digital video, audiobook, digital music, e-book, and other non-aws subscription services, grew revenue by 32% to $7.9 billion. Prime, which offers members unlimited fast delivery and access to Amazon Prime streaming, is now available in 22 countries with the latest addition of Portugal. CFO Brian Olsavsky said on a call with analysts that video “is good for the Prime program” and Amazon is investing in rolling out the Prime-member benefit across international markets.

When Bosch first premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2014, the streaming world was in a very different place. Netflix had only House of Cards and Orange is the New Black under its belt. Hulu was still a joint venture owned by multiple conglomerates. Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock didn’t even exist. Now, in June 2021, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases is highlighted by one last outing for LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
Bosch season 7 premieres on June 25. This will be the last batch of episodes for the series, before a spinoff gets rolling for IMDb TV. For those who are not caught up on the sprawling procedural, Amazon has some other original TV series this month as well. Brazilian crime drama Dom premieres on June 4. That will be followed by the second season of the Anna Paquin-starring public relations drama Flack on June 25.

Off-grid living is an attractive prospect to some, especially survivalists, libertarians and common-or-garden misanthropes. Such people’s rejection of society has inspired recent gems like Captain Fantastic and Leave No Trace, which raise difficult questions about civilisation, meaning and happiness. With Acasa, My Home, Romanian director Radu Ciorniciuc uses a cinema verite style to examine a real world example – the Enache family of the Bucharest Delta.
In establishing his subjects, Ciorniciuc’s direct cinema is joined by a smooth sense of narrative, giving his observational film a cinematic sensibility. This may lend a directorial presence on occasion, but generally it is an uncannily natural and intimate piece of documentary filmmaking, albeit one that doesn’t quite penetrate its central figure, Gica Enache.
The family of 12 lived in the delta for 20 years before the government came knocking. It was an area neglected for so long that a unique ecosystem arose, boasting...

The IFC Films documentary MLK/FBI from filmmaker Sam Pollard makes its debut in select theaters today as well as on demand. The release aligns with Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18 and it is super relevant to America’s wild inequity and racist treatment of the Black community — specifically Black activists.
MLK/FBI made its world premiere last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to play at the New York Film Festival. The riveting docu exposes J. Edgar Hoover and the U.S. government’s surveillance and harassment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was labeled by the FBI as the “most dangerous” Black person in America.
Based on newly discovered and declassified files, as well as revelatory restored footage, the documentary explores the government’s history of targeting Black activists. Considering the insurrection that took place last...

Whether you know a lot about bicycle racing or very little, The Racer, written and directed by Kieron J. Walsh, offers a lot to ponder about the sport.
It offers a lot about the mindset of sporting in general, especially when it comes to team sports.
Team sports, whether cycling, car racing, or gymnastics, among a host of others, always have at least one standout, and it's not unique for the other team members to stand back and allow that athlete's star to shine at the behest of their coach and for the best of the team.
The Racer shines a light on Dominique Chabol, a domestique for his team in the 1998 Tour de France.
The race that year was special because the first three legs were completed in Ireland, and it's the first time that Epo doping reared its ugly head.
There was a solid history of doping in cycling,...

Zeitgeist Films has unveiled the first official trailer for Radu Ciorniciuc’s documentary “Acasa, My Home,” following a Roma family who lived in harmony with nature for nearly two decades in the Bucharest Delta.
The film, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, portrays the Enache family — father Gică, mother Niculina and their nine children — living next to an abandoned reservoir just outside the metropolis. When the area is transformed into a public national park, they are forced to leave behind their unconventional life and move to the city.
The footage, released Friday, shows the children pulling fish out of the lake with their bare hands and hiding in the bushes from social workers, then dealing with the changed circumstances after their ramshackle hut gets demolished. It includes a seemingly improbable visit by Britain’s Prince Charles to recognize the tract as an urban wildlife reserve and the resistance Gică to leaving,...

While “Acasa, My Home” continues to travel the festival circuit – a journey that has included it winning the cinematography award at Sundance, and screening this week at El Gouna in Egypt – and recently secured distribution in North America, its Romanian director Radu Ciorniciuc is hard at work on his next film, “Tata.” Co-directed with “Acasa’s” screenwriter and his partner, Lina Vdovii, it will focus on modern-day slavery.
“It’s about a father who is basically living and working in modern-day slavery conditions,” Ciorniciuc tells Variety. “He was violent to his daughter when she was young and now they meet. She is a journalist and she wants to confront him in Italy, where he works, coming from Moldova. She learns he has been [in this nightmarish situation of modern-day slavery] for the last two decades, and her investigation gives them a platform to explore their broken bond. Exclusive: Much like the rest of the world, Rufus Jones watched on in horror as the refugee crisis gripped Europe in 2015. As people fled conflict in Syria and beyond, the Stan & Ollie actor had just fathered twins and became preoccupied with worries about the world his new-born girls were entering.
Not obvious territory for comedy, you might think. But that’s exactly how Jones’ thoughts crystallized as he set to work on a script that would domesticate the epic scale of the horrors being transmitted on rolling news at the time. And so, Home was created, but it would be four years before the comedy found its own home with Channel 4.
The show premiered last year and tells the story of how a family in the small British town of Dorking takes in a Syrian refugee named Sami. It returns for a second season in the UK on Wednesday...

Genre movies based in the home usually take one of a few routes. They can be a haunted house tale, they can be a home invasion movie or they can be something else. Anyone Home? sits nicely in that ‘something else’ category.
It centres on a single mum, Camila (Monique Gabriela Curnen), who is struggling financially and mentally while bringing up her son. She thinks her luck has changed though when she gets a job house-sitting a model home. All she has to do is decorate the house to look good for when would be buyers look round. But it doesn’t take too long for even that to be too much for her.

It hasn’t been a banner year for the Academy’s Music Branch. The Best Original Song category was marred by the disastrous “‘Glasgow’ Snubbing of 2020,” and the Best Original Score category has proven to be similarly dull and unadventurous. Where is Daniel Lopatin’s cosmically neurotic accompaniment to “Uncut Gems?” Or Alex Weston’s arch, contrapuntal, and heartbreaking score for “The Farewell?” What about the soul-stirring synth opus that Dan Levy wrote for “I Lost My Body,” or the bittersweet and playfully helpless orchestrations that Jung Jae-il contributed to “Parasite” (music so vital that it achieves a mutually symbiotic relationship with the film for which it was written)? Sigh.
Instead, the Academy defaulted to a set of old standards, as the five composers nominated for Best Original Score have now earned a grand total of 99 nominations between them. Yes, ninety-nine. And when you consider that “Joker” composer Hildur Guðnadóttir...

Hollywood is so committed to reboots and remakes that it wouldn’t be surprising if updated takes of Jim Carrey classics like “The Mask” or “Liar Liar” went into production, but there’s one Carrey film the actor thinks might actually work in the present day: “The Truman Show.” Directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Niccol, the 1998 comedy-drama starred Carrey as a man who discovers his entire life is being broadcast as a television show. Carrey’s character, Truman Burbank, was raised by a corporation inside a simulated reality series based on his life. For Carrey, the way the world digests media is so drastically different in 2020 than it was in 1998 that a new “Truman Show” movie might be worth exploring.
“I think ‘The Truman Show’ is something that exists on a micro level now,” Carrey told Collider when asked which film of his he’d most like to see brought back.

Stars: Jeff Ayars, Drew Beckas, Riggsby Lane, Simone Policano, Omer Rosen | Written by Omri Doran, Robert Harmon | Directed by Omri Dorani
Directed by, and based on the story by Omri Dorani (How to Get Girls) and written by Rob Harmon (Cosmos), This is Our Home is a low-budget psycho-horror about a struggling couple who head out on a weekend break, but have everything turned upside down when a child shows up at the door in the middle of the night with a big revelation that he is their son.
Dealing with psychology of relationship, a crumbling wall of a marriage in tatters, the film does a solid job of introducing the characters and bringing in a tense and uncomfortable atmosphere pretty early on. The tale of a couple attempting to save what is left of their relationship is done well, with damn fine work from the actors. Jeff Ayars plays...

For Australia’s commercial free-to-air networks, arguably the biggest threat to losing eyeballs is not each other but the seemingly inexorable rise of streaming services led by Netflix, Stan, Disney+ and Amazon.
However executives at the Seven, Nine and 10 Networks are confident their hefty investment in broad slates of unique Australian programming and their increasingly popular BVoD services will retain viewers.
“The 8.30 pm-9 pm drama audiences are certainly under attack from streaming competition,” Angus Ross, Seven’s director of network programming, tells If.

In many ways, 2019 was a remarkable year for country and country-adjacent performers who didn’t conform to traditions, in spite of a persistently tough radio environment for anyone not male, white, and straight. Lil Nas X, a gay black man, took over the world and confounded chart watchers with “Old Town Road,” a smash that worked just as well at Cma Fest as it did Coachella, while masked singer Orville Peck introduced the world to his queered spin on cowboy masculinity and sexuality. On a victory lap after a huge...

Nearly three years will have passed by the time Season 4 of FX’s “Fargo” premieres in April, and audiences should prepare themselves for a version of the series never before seen.
Not only has “Fargo” left the wilds of Alberta to film stateside — in Chicago, specifically — but the season is set firmly in the past, lending the show some period piece bonafides it only flirted with in prior seasons. And it would be remiss to not mention the most significant adjustment to the DNA of the series: the diversification of a cast whose pallor too-often resembled the the snowy fields of winter in Minnesota.
Also, there are so many hats.
“This year, we’re really looking at the origins of the American capital crime, which is the exploitation of cheap labor,” Hawley explained of the upcoming season. “It took a long time for those people working to break into what we consider mainstream America.

ESPN was again runner-up in primetime, but MSNBC bumped the world’s most expensive cable channel to third in total day rankings.
