It’s rare to find a star whose taste you can trust beyond their performance; the kind of actor who’s proven to be as discerning in their projects’ quality as they are in choosing rewarding individual roles. There simply aren’t that many Julia Louis-Dreyfuses or Carrie Coons out there, with either impeccable résumés or a Hall of Fame-worthy batting average. But Elisabeth Moss is among them.
As a TV lead, she’s steered some of the modern era’s greatest programs: seven masterful seasons of “Mad Men,” two staggering seasons of “Top of the Lake,” one stirring season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” (and a few more she carried on her back). Even her single misfire is minor: The 2022 Apple TV+ series “Shining Girls” is more intriguing and better than its (lack of) recognition. Plus, it arrived amid a smattering of strong film work that befit her premium brand.

When one thinks of auteur-driven Peak TV in the streaming age, the first shows that generally come to mind are “House Of Cards” (2013) with David Fincher at the helm (at least for the first few eps), “True Detective” (2014) by director Cary Fukunaga, and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick” (2014). Crucial to the mix, but sometimes missing in that conversation, is Jane Campion’s “Top Of The Lake” starring Elisabeth Moss, which debuted in 2013, right at the beginning of this new second golden age of TV.

We meet Elisabeth Moss’ Portia in the first scene of FX’s new Hulu drama The Veil, striding confidently through a busy international airport, stiletto heels precariously high, her mouth a gash of crimson lipstick. She’s meeting a shady businessman named Tomas, and they toast to a transaction successfully made. But several seconds later, Interpol rushes in and she chides Tomas for all the criminal details he spilled in the previous 37 days. She walks away, leaving him fuming and in custody.
Her name isn’t actually Portia. As she leaves, aspect and tone instantly changed, she’s already arranging her next destination — Istanbul — and her next identity, telling a person on the telephone, “I would like my name to be Imogen.” She will be Imogen for the rest of The Veil.
It’s here, two minutes into the show, that eagle-eyed viewers and English majors should already be putting together certain pieces.

Jane Campion, director of “The Power of the Dog,” is the recipient of this year’s Pardo d’Onore Manor at the Locarno Film Festival — its award for outstanding achievement in cinema. So yes, the “Dog” director is getting a cat trophy: Pardo d’Onore translates to “Leopard of Honor” in English.
The award will be bestowed on August 16, 2024 at the 77th edition of the festival. Locarno will also feature screenings of two Campion movies as selected by the director herself: 1990’s “An Angel at My Table” and 1993’s “The Piano.” It will be a brand new 4K restoration of “The Piano” that audience in Switzerland sees.
It’s quite an honor, but certainly not Campion’s first big award. She was the first woman to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (for “The Piano”). Campion is also the first woman to be nominated twice for...

True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart” features a powerhouse performance from veteran star Sigourney Weaver, who once again reminds us that she is one of the best in the business. The acclaimed Amazon Prime Video limited series follows a young girl who survives a violent upbringing and is then subsequently raised on a flower farm by her grandmother. Weaver plays the grandmother, June, and ties the entire series together with the sheer might of her performance. She propelled the story to greatness and, as a result, propelled the series to excellent reviews.
Robert Lloyd (Los Angeles Times) opined: “The series, which is sensitively written, expertly performed by actors young and old, and beautifully shot, is in no rush to give up its mysteries, and by drawing out the drama, what’s obvious in the story comes off as proportionally more subtle.”

AMC Networks announced today that the four-part Australian rural noir crime drama Scrublands will premiere on Thursday, May 2, on Sundance Now and AMC+, with additional episodes dropping weekly on both platforms.
Based on Chris Hammer’s award-winning and bestselling crime novel by the same name, the captivating series follows a country town grappling with the aftermath of a horrible crime, still trying to come to terms with it a year on.
In an isolated and struggling country town, a charismatic and dedicated priest, Father Byron Swift, calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners. One year later, investigative journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy.
But when Martin’s instincts kick in, and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart, and he finds himself in a life-and-death race to uncover the truth.

A new miniseries has been announced, and it looks fantastic.
We look at the cast list. What do we see? Oh, another show starring Nicole Kidman. Or Jake Lacy. Or Kate Winslet. Or Betty Gilpin.
You get the idea.
Look, we get it. A miniseries has limited episodes to make an impact, and a recognizable name can be a big draw.
Since it's become commonplace for renowned movie actors to make the move to television, particularly miniseries, why wouldn't a studio jump on the chance to nab a big name?
It's a winning formula -- literally.
Nicole Kidman is an Oscar winner. What television producer wouldn't want her attached to their project?
She's also snagged a couple of Emmys for her work on HBO's Big Little Lies. She's proven her worth as a TV star.
The same can be said about Kate Winslet, who similarly made the jump from movies to television.

True Detective has to be one of the most brilliant anthology mystery thriller shows ever made. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the HBO series told a dark and haunting tale through the brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in its first season. The quality of the series took a nosedive in its second season and the third season while better from Season 2 didn’t really match the expectation that the inaugural season of True Detective set. Now, we are in Season 4 titled Night Country and with a new creative force behind the series, the fans are getting exactly what they want. So, if you have already finished the much awaited Season 4 of True Detective and are hoping for a renewal, here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for the new season.

The “corpsicle,” as it’s been dubbed since “Night Country” author Issa López first wrote the scene, is a shocking sight to behold. Twisted naked bodies, frozen in ice, have been carved from their original resting place and plopped at the center of a hockey rink to thaw. How did they die? Why are they naked? Who — or what — did this to them? As the ice melts, secrets spill out and the dead’s last moments gain gruesome clarity. Frostbite blackens their extremities. Teeth marks cover their skin. One is bleeding from the ears. Another is missing the fingers he’d used to claw out his own eyes.
Despite its vividly unique rendering, the corpsicle is still strangely familiar. Here are these dead naked men, ornately displayed by natural elements, unable to shield themselves from the discerning eyes of the detectives investigating their demise. You can’t help but stare,...
