If this year’s Creative Arts Emmys took place in Westeros, HBO would’ve easily ascended to the Iron Throne.
Fueled by its original series Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, with a little love thrown at the Clive Owen-Nicole Kidman movie Hemingway & Gellhorn to boot, the pay cabler walked away from the evening with 17 total wins, including six for Thrones alone. (Last year, the fantasy saga grabbed gold just twice, even including at the Big Show.)

Exclusive: Just as Deadline predicted, the Academy Awards are staying put at Hollywood & Highland for the next 20 years in the former Kodak Theatre now named the Dolby Theatre, sources tell me. Kodak filed for bankruptcy in January and was only halfway through a 20-year rights deal when it pulled out just before this year’s Academy Awards. (Media outlets were asked to refer to the venue as Hollywood & Highland Center during the Oscarcast). The Oscars are the theatre’s marquee tenant, and the Academy’s lease with Cim was going to be up ahead of the 2014 Academy Awards. Details are now here: Hollywood (May 1, 2012) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Cim Group announced today that the Academy Awards® will remain in Hollywood under a new 20-year deal. Concurrently, in a separate agreement, Dolby Laboratories, Inc and Cim announced a 20-year agreement to name the Dolby Theatre™ — the...

The 85th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, Feb. 24th, per an announcement from the Academy on Wednesday. Nominations will go out on Jan. 14, and the show will once again reside at Hollywood and Highland -- though Kodak's name is now off the theater. There have long been rumors the Academy would move up the show's date, but 2013's telecast will take place on the last Sunday in February, just like this year. The Oscars will introduce online voting for the first time this year, which some thought would clear the way...

The 84th Annual Academy Awards have wrapped up and the general consensus from most people is: it was okay. Personally, though, I hate that the standard for judging what should be the biggest event in the film industry, is by how it 'sucked less' than the year before. This should be an amazing and fun event for all people who are passionate about film, not just those who work in it. The show has been such a bore though, so I've thought of a few ways to fix the Oscars, and bring them back to where they should be.
Lose the Pretension
I was telling my cohort on Tmp Sunday night it's sad that the biggest event of our industry (film) is something I can't stand to really watch. I do because I feel like I should, but it's been a very long while since I've enjoyed the show. One...

Twas only 3 days ago that all of Hollywood waxed and Spanxed and groomed in preparation for The 84th Annual Academy Awards, the movie industry’s complimentary 3-hour-long Thai Massage for Harvey Weinstein. And on this fabled eve, two luminaries took the time out of their busy “casual stroll” schedule to pose for a photograph together: Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and writer-Bowfinger star Steve Martin. And the two even tweeted the photo, albeit with very different sentiments. Gwyneth loves her life; Steve hates it. Looks like somebody still hasn’t unsubscribed from the Goop newsletter! And sure, Steve’s kind of being a d*ck about this… but also the best? I mean she deserves it right? I’m genuinely trying to figure out if I dislike Gwyneth or if I just envy the fact that she can wear a white dress without looking like Pizza the Hut. (via Gawker)...

Viewing figures for 2012 Oscars up despite Twitter criticism of host's controversial 'blackface' sketch
Viewing figures for Sunday's Oscars ceremony were up by an estimated 4% compared to last year's show, despite mixed reviews for Billy Crystal's ninth stint as host.
Early predictions suggest that ABC's three-hour broadcast drew 39.3 million viewers, compared to 37.9 million for Anne Hathaway and James Franco's widely derided tenure in 2011. However, it appears likely that viewers were older than for last year's event, reflecting 63-year-old Crystal's veteran status. Nevertheless, ABC said it was the second-largest TV audience for the Academy Awards since 2007 and pointed out that the show retained all of its 2011 audience in the coveted 18-49 year-old age group.
Crystal's performance as host has come in for criticism, with many commentators labelling it safe and bland. Controversy, in particular, continues to rage over the comic's decision to appear in blackface as Hollywood legend Sammy Davis...

The 84th Annual Academy Awards have wrapped, officially concluding the 2011 movie year. (Yes, I’m aware that we’re already two full months into 2012, but the Academy moves slower than we’d prefer.) As expected, The Artist -- Michel Hazanavicius’ ode to Hollywood’s Golden Age -- took home the evening’s top honors, claiming best picture, director and actor for the effervescent Jean Dujardin. The remaining acting trophies were divided up between the legendary Meryl Streep (for The Iron Lady), Octavia Spencer (for The Help), and the iconic Christopher Plummer, whose win for Beginners makes him our oldest actor to win an Oscar. But enough looking back. Let’s project forward. Let’s figure out when you’ll be able to see these worthy...

While we totally enjoyed the silly way Angelina Jolie insisted on posing with her leg at last night’s Oscars — and the Twitter stir her leg caused all through the night — many of you were more alarmed than amused. Is she really able to stand and walk around on legs skinnier than our arms? Did she give all her food away to war refugees? We’re not completely sure of the normally slender actress was actually thinner than usual last night, or if we’re just not used to seeing that much of her bared leg against the stark contrast of all that Versace velvet. But yeah, there were a bunch of actresses we’d like to feed sandwiches to right about now. Somehow, we doubt they partook in that popcorn that was passed out in the Kodak, much less the 3-D desserts Wolfgang Puck cooked up for the Governor’s Ball.

There’s little we hate more than the way rumors of catfighting on the set plagues every TV show or movie that features an ensemble of women. As if no one can believe that any room of ladies inevitably turns into a scene from Mob Wives. That’s just one of the reasons we love the way this awards season has proved that the opposite was the case with the casts of Bridesmaids and The Help. Before she picked up her Best Supporting Actress Oscar last night, Octavia Spencer made it clear that she never wants to consider her colleagues “rivals” of any kind.
“I’m actually not competing,” Spencer told VH1 News on the red carpet. “I’ve got Janet McTeer who gave a brilliant performance. Melissa McCarthy, our dear friend, gave a brilliant performance. Jessica Chastain, a good friend, and Berenice Bejo.

Nikki Finke: Live-Snarking The Oscars Update 11:30 Am: The 84th Annual Academy Awards drew 39.3 million viewers in Live+Same Day. That is up 4% from last year’s viewership and the second-most-watched Oscar ceremony in the past five years, behind the 2010 show where The Hurt Locker defeated blockbuster Avatar. Among adults 18-49, last night’s Oscar telecast (11.7 rating) was even with last year, an impressive feat given that that this year’s host Billy Crystal is almost 64, while last year’s show was hosted by twenty- and thirtysomethings James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Here is historical data for the Academy Awards’ audiences over the past decade, along with the Best Picture winner that year. 2012 39.3 million The Artist 2011 37.9 million The King’s Speech 2010 41.3 million The Hurt Locker 2009 36.3 million Slumdog Millionaire 2008 32.0 million No Country For Old Men 2007 40. 2 million The Departed 2006 38.9 million Crash 2005 42.1 million Million Dollar Baby 2004 43.5 million Lord Of The Rings: Return Of...

“She’s so gorgeous!” “She’s too thin!” “I love her hair! “Is she pregnant?” “What was her stylist thinking?” Yes, most of our commentary about Oscar fashion revolves around the women in attendance. The lovely ladies of Hollywood always steal the show on the red carpet, but we want to give the men a chance to shine. While some guys just slap on a penguin suit and call it a day, a few put a little extra thought into their attire, and for that, we applaud them.

The Academy Awards are poised for ratings growth this year, despite largely negative reviews and plenty of expected wins.
Overnight ratings give the ABC broadcast a 25.5 household rating and a 38 share between 8:30 p.m. and 11:24 p.m. That's 4 percent over last year's showing (24.5Hh/37), but still down from highs in 2010 (26.5Hh/40) and 2007 (27.7Hh/42).

The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.
Here's the full list of nominees with the winners in bold.

Did Billy Crystal rescue the Oscars?
Even with few box-office heavyweights in contention for top categories, early ratings for Sunday night’s 84th Annual Academy Awards telecast show a slight rise from last year.
ABC’s preliminary household ratings suggest a 4 percent gain in Oscars viewership from 2011.
That could easily shift, however, when the national ratings come in. We’ll update this post with firm viewership numbers in the next couple hours… refresh for the latest info.
In the meantime, here’s how the Oscars have fared in recent years:
– 2011: 37.9 million viewers / 11.8 adult demo rating (King’s Speech)

Whether he's dazzling us with killer performances, topping the box office and the Billboard charts or just dropping yet another memorable music video, the Biebs has kept us talking since he first rose to super fame way back in 2009.
Of course, actually narrowing down all of those moments was no easy task. Our list had to include career successes as well as personal achievements, and the pop star has had no shortage of either. But we put our heads together for the Beliebers. We'll celebrate every day leading up...

Didn't get an invite to this year's Oscars? Neither did Xan Brooks, but he stoically blogged the red carpet and then the ceremony anyway
10.57pm: And so it begins ....
11.25pm: Roll carpet, roll cameras: it's the 84th annual Academy Awards, live and lurid from Hollywood. The Guardian film team will be covering the event throughout the night, weeping with the winners and wailing with the losers as this season's awards circus clatters exhaustedly towards the finish line. This is where it ends, inside the Hollywood and Highland Centre (reputedly the winner of the 2007 "Ugliest Building in La" award). Inside, the victors shall be encased in gold, the vanquished shown the door and all manner of movies laid tenderly to rest.
But wait, kick back, and keep the war horses tethered: the actual ceremony does not officially commence until 5pm (Pacific time). Time enough to cast an eye back over some late-breaking Oscar news.

Do Rose Byrne and Anna Faris have the same stylist? They look like twins on the red carpet! Even their hair is almost the same length and style. Both remarkably slender ladies wore similar gowns, although Rose’s Vivienne Westwood shows more skin than Anna’s Diane von Furstenberg. We do love us some black sequins, and even though she’s all covered up, Anna’s Dvf has our vote.

Their gowns are indicative of another ubiquitous Academy Awards red carpet mainstay, and the 2012 Oscars had quite a few examples of it. Sequins! Beading! Gold Embroidery! They’re all part of the metallic trend we so love. Whether it was Octavia Spencer‘s cream Shoji, Jennifer Lopez‘s Zuhair Murad or Stacy Keibler’s gold Marchesa, we had plenty to fawn over. We were quite captivated with Judy Greer’s unusual Monique Lhuillier in black and silver as well.

Think of a color. Think of an obscure shade, or even a nondescript one. It was probably represented on the Oscars 2012 red carpet. Paler, more interesting shades like Sarah Hyland‘s rhubarb colored Alberta Feretti dress or Berenice Bejo‘s lovely mint green gown by Elie Saab. There will definitely be some debates about Penelope Cruz’s iceberg custom Giorgio Armani organza gown which in itself was old-school Hollywood glamor, but the color on her wasn’t the best choice.
The ones we’ve really fallen in love with are Viola Davis‘ and Michelle Williams’ emerald Vera Wang and tangerine Louis Vuitton, respectively. Best dressed all the way. Natalie Portman made us sit up and cheer for her red Dior Haute Couture dress from Rare Vintage, which is a 1954 collection. Emma Stone also never disappoints. 2012 Oscars: Photos from the Show (111 images so far) | Live Blog | Oscar History The season has finally come to an end. The 2012 Oscars have come to a close and things went pretty much as expected with a few hitches in the technical awards and what some may look at as a surprise win for Meryl Streep for Best Actress over Viola Davis, but even if you had Davis there (as I did) you most likely had Streep as your number two so you weren't exactly blown away. Getting the expected out of the way, The Artist took home a total of five Oscars including Best Picture, Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Actor (Jean Dujardin), Original Score (Ludovic Bource) and Costumes (Mark Bridges), the latter of which is really the only "surprise" win. I had The Artist winning five Oscars but instead of Costumes, I expected that fifth Oscar to come for Film Editing,...

In a bit of an upset, Streep won her third Oscar for her spot-on portrayal of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, besting front-runner Viola Davis (The Help), Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Rooney Mara ([link...

So, it wasn’t the most surprising of Oscar ceremonies. That’s why we have to thank the women who made things interesting with their sartorial choices — all that color, all those sequins and pleats, all those perfect silhouettes served to liven up the self-congratulatory goings on at the Kodak Theatre. Gwyneth Paltrow swooped in wearing a cape, guys. And Angelina Jolie’s slinky Versace made her actually act silly in public, which is a virtue we didn’t know dresses possessed. Viola Davis’ Vera Wang should make actual emeralds feel dull by comparison. And we don’t even know what the color of Michelle Williams’ gown is, it’s just perfect.

Tonight, the 2012 Oscars rewarded the talented, entertained the masses and reminded us all about the impeachable hotness of Jennifer Lopez. Seriously. Yikes. They also made us wince with humiliation on more than one occasion. In fact, our top 10 most embarrassing moments were…
10) Bradley Cooper‘s mustache: Bradley was looking a little like a male stripper this evening. Not that that’s the worst way for him to look…
9) Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz’s booty shot: “Just take a chance!” Cammie laughed as she and JLo turned their bums to the audience during their Best Makeup presentation. We get it, ladies. There’s not a chance we weren’t going to love your butts.
8 ) Cirque de Soleil dancer biffs it hard: One unfortunate performer bit it during the troupe’s acrobatic dance performance. Unless his fall was intentional? You can never tell with those French Canadians…

Films, performances and songs get judged at the Oscars, as do the fashion styles and makeup. But what about the boobs, bums and other body parts that make the night unforgettable? If you ask us, the Oscars definitely need to add a category. So, tonight we’re going to change all that and give you our picks for the best body parts of the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Very appropriate, given that Angelina Jolie’s leg (@angiesrightleg) must be setting some kind of record for most Twitter followers for a limb gained in a single evening. From Jennifer Lopez’s almost wardrobe malfunction to Billy Crystal’s epic jowls, we have our list of faves from the night. Head on down to the gallery below to check ‘em out!

Sacha Baron Cohen vowed to bring his personal brand of evil hilarity to the Oscars tonight after having his Oscar ban lifted, sashaying down the red carpet in character as the madcap despot from his upcoming film The Dictator. Cohen did his best to deliver on his insidious vow, going so far as to dump “Kim Jong Il‘s ashes” on Ryan Seacrest‘s tuxedo on his way into the Kodak Theatre. Unfortunately, the comedian’s promotional prank might have backfired, as everyone and their mother seemed to have greeted his silliness with groans and eye rolls rather than chuckles. And no, they were not groans and eye rolls of hysterical laughter…

We almost didn’t want to write this one, people. Because honestly, for the first time in as long as we can remember, there were no completely egregious fails on the Oscars red carpet tonight. No gowns made out of garbage bags, no inappropriate body parts hanging out, no missing undergarments. So what follows is a list of the people whose outfits were less than than the spectacular fashions we’ve come to expect from their kind. We think we might be struck down on our very couch for daring to criticize Meryl Streep, but that gold material looks more suited for a downtown cabaret backdrop. And Melissa McCarthy, you know we love you. But we wish you would dress to show off your curves, not drape them in bags. Also, it’s really hard for men to make this list, but we’re giving an honorary mention to Bradley Cooper and his silly mustache.

With the exception of Sacha Baron Cohen dumping a pile of Bisquick “ashes” all over Ryan Seacrest during the live E! Pre-Show, the 2012 Academy Awards have been a bit of a snoozefest thus far. That is, until Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz took the stage to present an award. While Cameron Diaz prepared to read the winner of the Best Costume Design category, it appeared as if J.Lo’s left areola tried to escape her stunning dress. As you’ll see in the video above, it appears that someone signaled to the American Idol judge to cover up, as she demurely moved her hand to cover the offending area as quickly as possible.
Naturally, this has been a huge hit on Twitter. Comedienne Paula Pell tweeted that “J-Lo’s body wants to be seen. It’s trying to escape like a puppy in a pillowcase,” and someone just launched the @JLosNipple Twitter feed.

Billy Crystal kicked off the Oscars with one of his signature musical medleys about the nine Best Picture nominees, and we are … on the fence. On one hand, it wouldn’t be a Billy Crystal show without some egregious puns. It just wouldn’t! On the other hand … perhaps Crystal is a little rusty. But maybe we’re being a little harsh on Billy. What did you think of how he kicked off the show? A few things to consider:
1) All the Jonah Hill weight jokes! “Jonah Hill used to have more to his middle”? “They’re serving cupcakes after the show”? Even if Jonah wasn’t looking a little heavier, this would be cringe-worthy. As it is … yikes.
2) Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close jokes! “Tom Hanks is a memory”? We know it’s hard to make a musical joke about a 9/11 drama, so…maybe not make one?
3) The quietness! We...

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

While it was supposed to be the evening of the French-made silent film "The Artist" -- and don't worry, eventually it was -- the narrative of the 84th Annual Academy Awards was certainly, for at least two-thirds of the show, all about Martin Scorsese's "Hugo." Both nostalgic, celebratory love letters to cinema, Scorsese's "Hugo," starring Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz and Sir Ben Kingsley, broke out early in the technical categories, leading all the films in wins throughout most of the ceremony leaving Oscar pundits a little nervous that their 'Artist' guesses might have been wrong.
But the film quickly topped out at five awards and never took any major prizes after that. And while the film did take home five Oscar statuettes, the same as "The Artist," the Michel Hazanavicius-directed film performed in the big categories as expected including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin,...

Right! It’s another caffeine fuelled night ahead of us as we prepare to liveblog the 84th Academy Awards.
The Artist is the favourite to scoop up the awards tonight, which would round off a grand few days for Michel Hazanavicius and his silent film which run rampant through the Cesars and Independent Spirit awards but we may see Martin Scorsese’s Hugo do well with Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Meryl Streep and Viola Davis front runners for the acting awards.
Whether you agree with the relevance and importance of the Oscars it is the one night of the year when a huge amount of people are talking and celebrating movies, and that can only be a good thing. Debate will begin with the first award and continue with every golden envelope opened.
So, join us below, or on Twitter at @HeyUGuys for our take on film’s biggest night.

West Hollywood, Calif. — Gwyneth Paltrow, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Allison Janney celebrated their Oscar-nominated sisters at Women in Film's fifth annual pre-Oscar party.
Of the year's nearly 200 Academy Awards nominees, 45 are women, said Cathy Shulman, president of Women in Film, Los Angeles.
"You're the best of the best," she said Friday. "But you're only a quarter of the nominees."
Women have consistently comprised less than 25 percent of annual Oscar nominees, Shulman said, "and it's important we work together to increase that statistic."
Paltrow co-hosted the party at Cecconi's restaurant, where Oscar nominees and other female filmmakers gathered to talk shop, sip Champagne and celebrate their achievements.
"We're smarter than men and better than men," Paltrow said. "I raise an imaginary glass to all the nominees."
Paltrow's mother, Blythe Danner, was also among the night's guests.

Los Angeles - Workers were putting the finishing touches to the Oscar set as Hollywood prepared for its biggest night of the year: The 84th annual Academy Awards on Sunday. But the preparations were overshadowed by a scandal engineered by comedian Sasha Baron Cohen, who blasted the decision of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to ban him from parading down the red carpet as the lead character from his upcoming film The Dictator. 'They have until midday on Sunday to give me my tickets back. If they do not, they will see and face unforeseen and unimaginable consequences,' said the provocative actor in an interview Friday on the Today show, in character as Admiral General Shabazz...
