It's difficult to define what makes a film "underrated," but in the landscape of slasher movies, the Australian franchise "Wolf Creek" is my go-to answer for "most underrated." It does seem strange to give the series that distinction considering there are two "Wolf Creek" feature films, a two-season television continuation series, two novels, and a rumored third film currently in development, but the average movie fan has no idea what "Wolf Creek" is or why John Jarratt's Mick Taylor is one of the scariest killers out there. And yet, the series has continued on and expanded in the ways that it has because it's genuinely terrifying.
Writer/director Greg McLean first started on the script for "Wolf Creek" back in the late '90s, but knew something was missing. His first take was a far more traditional slasher, but it was after seeing media of an Australian serial killer...

On a dark and stormy night, two strangers wait out the weather in a rundown caravan deep in Australia's coastal region. Tension mounts as the weathered trailer owner and his mysterious guest learn more about each other and the events that have drawn them both together, but these two don't reveal their secrets easily. Over the course of the night suspicions shift and fear rains down on the thin tin roof as the storm worsens, trapping the two disparate souls together.

Zac Efron has joined survival thriller “Gold,” an original film out of Australian streamer Stan.
Shopped to buyers at next week’s American Film Market (AFM), the film turns on two strangers traveling through a desert who stumble upon the biggest gold nugget ever found. When dreams of unimaginable wealth take hold, they devise a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment.
Efron plays the man left behind, who comes up against unforgiving desert elements, ravenous wild dogs and mysterious intruders, all while wondering whether his partner is ever going to come back for him. Principal photography on the movie will begin in Australia this month — where film and TV production has been able to continue relatively unscathed during the Covid-19 crisis.
London-headquartered Altitude Film Sales will co-represent domestic sales on the film with CAA Media Finance. “Gold” will be released...

The Wolf Creek franchise has been surprisingly long-lasting, from the 2005 original horror movie to its 2013 sequel, and two seasons of a web-based show that ran from 2016 to 2017. Star John Jarratt, who plays the homicidal Mick Taylor in the series, has now revealed that a Wolf Creek 3 and a third season of the web program are in-development.
Speaking on Facebook, Jarratt indicated that new instalments in the Australian-based Wolf Creek franchise are likely, but that, like with other projects, things have been slowed down by Covid-19.
“To my delight – I have received an overwhelming amount of messages about Wolf Creek 3 – the season and the movie. [Franchise creator/director] Greg McLean and I have both projects in the works but unfortunately Covid-19 has the world at a standstill. I promise to keep you updated as we all try our best to get through these tough times.”

Indie feature Zelos is somewhat of anomaly in Australian cinema — it.s a film helmed predominantly by women, including a female director, co-producers, writer, cinematographer and editor. .
The film is the feature debut of director Jo-Anne Brechin, who first met writer Claire Harris when studying screenwriting at Aftrs in 2013.
.I remember hearing her pitch [Zelos] in class and just being like, .let.s do that together,.. Brechin told If.
They formed a pact to make the film when Harris finished the screenplay; a vision that has now come to fruition, with Zelos.currently in post.
A coming of age story, Zelos follows 30-something Bernard (Ben Mortley, Lantana, McLeod.s Daughters) who feels he has his life set up. He.s got a successful career, beachside apartment and a girlfriend, Sarah, who he adores.
However, his life is turned upside down when Sarah (Shannon Ashlyn, Wolf Creek 2, Love Child) confesses to having an affair overseas.

For his latest adventure in suspense, director Greg McLean reins in the blood and guts to focus on a family under attack by forces both interior and exterior. McLean established his international reputation with the gruesome Wolf Creek more than 10 years ago, and the sequel Wolf Creek 2 dug into body horror with even more gusto. In between he made Rogue, probably remembered chiefly as a crocodile thriller. Yet each of those films showed McLean's distinctive ability to marshal his resources in order to unleash something more than might be expected. Australian filmmaker Greg McLean has been nothing but impressive since bursting onto the scene with Wolf Creek back in 2005, which introduced the horror world to a brand new icon in the form of outback serial killer Mick Taylor. McLean followed up his debut feature with Rogue, one of the very best man-eating crocodile films ever made, and he subsequently brought Mick back in Wolf Creek 2. His latest film is his first one set in America, and this time he’s delving into supernatural suburbia.
Written by McLean, Shane Krause, and Shayne Armstrong, The Darkness centers on the Taylor family: father Peter (Kevin Bacon!), mother Bronny (Radha Mitchell), teenage daughter Stephanie (Lucy Fry) and young son Michael (David Mazouz). While on a...

Australian films are experiencing a resurgence in cinemas this year, raking in $21.7 million through April 20.
That.s way up on the $13.7 million collected in the first four months last year, when The Railway Man, Wolf Creek 2 and Tracks were the only significant contributors.
Given the upcoming release line-up including George Miller.s Mad Max: Fury Road, Jeremy Sims' Last Cab to Darwin, Brendan Cowell's Ruben Guthrie,. Jocelyn Moorhouse.s The Dressmaker, Simon Stone.s The Daughter and Michael Petroni.s Backtrack, the industry is on course to far surpass the 2014. total of $26.1 million from 39 films and feature documentaries plus holdovers.
Almost certainly 2015 will be a far bigger year for Oz cinema than 2013.s $38.5 million, and probably 2012.s $47.8 million. In the past 10 years the record is 2009.s $54.7 million.

Guys. Guys! James Gunn and Greg McLean are working together on an amazing sounding project called The Belco Experiment! That's right, the director of Wolf Creek and last year's simply killer Wolf Creek 2 will direct a script from the director of Super and Guardians of the Galaxy.
About the film:
“The story revolves around the American Belco company in South America which is mysteriously sealed off at the beginning of a work day,” explains Gunn, “and its employees are ordered to kill each other or be killed themselves. This starts an escalation of violence, where we discover the true nature of each and every Belco employee.”
The film is currently in pre-production and will be shooting in Bogota, Colombia in [Continued ...]...

Kill or be killed. How would you react? James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) peels back the civilized veneer of one company's workforce to see what lies beneath in The Belco Experiment, a screenplay he wrote years ago in which co-workers are forced to slay one another or bite the bullet themselves. Gunn's carnage on the printed page will now come to life with a familiar face behind the camera, as Gunn has announced that The Belco Experiment is moving forward at MGM with Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, Wolf Creek 2) in the director's chair.
Below is Gunn's official announcement from his Facebook page. Pre-production on the horror-thriller is underway and shooting is slated to start in Colombia this June. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more updates on The Belco Experiment, which sounds a little like Operation: Endgame with a horror twist:

Judging Australian films. success or failure by their local B.O. results is unfair and misleading, according to several academics who have devised a new formula for measuring the global impact of individual titles.
Dubbed film impact rating (Fir), the metric assesses films on 14 criteria including the location, volume and saturation of film screenings including film festivals; critic and user ratings, award nominations and wins; and Australian and international B.O. returns and production budget as a percentage of worldwide B.O.
The study.s authors Deb Verhoeven, Alwyn Davidson and Bronwyn Coate tracked 134 Australian films, including co-productions, that screened between December 1 2012 and June 1 2014.
By that yardstick, Saving My Banks had the greatest impact worldwide, narrowly ahead of The Great Gatsby, despite the gap in their total B.O. earnings: $US112.5 million for the Disney film co-produced by Essential Media and Entertainment.s Ian Collie, versus $351 million for Baz.s extravaganza.

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. Also recognized in this year's nominations is Scream Factory's Nightbreed: The Director's Cut Blu-ray, NBC's Hannibal TV series, Only Lovers Left Alive, and many more.
