MaryAnn’s quick take… Psychologically risible and paranormally inconsistent heist horror gives us not a single character to like or root for, or even to cheer dying. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The worst criminal gang ever — unprofessional, unprepared, and rife with in-fighting — is robbing a bank. A bank that turns out to be haunted. Which they might have learned if they’d bothered to do the slightest bit of research, because it’s pretty much all anyone at the bank will talk about given the tiniest provocation. Whatever entertaining possibilities that heisting a ghoul-infested bank vault might offer are entirely overlooked by writer (with Conal Byrne) and director Dan Bush (The Reconstruction of William Zero), who employs the minimal level of imagination required to shuffle his unappealing characters through 90 minutes of shouting at one another and then dying,...

Earlier this month I had the gracious opportunity to interview director Dan Bush – best known for 2007’s The Signal and 2014’s The Reconstruction of William Zero. Bush’s most recent work – The Vault – is a unique blend between the heist and supernatural thriller genres; set for a September 8th release. Starring James Franco & Francesca Eastwood, The Vault’s theatrical release is a space to watch.
Dan, going from a largely independent film maker, ‘The Vault’ seems to be moving you towards larger ‘blockbuster’ style features. Is this kind of filmmaking & releases a goal of yours to reach? Or would you prefer to stay at an independent level.
I just love making movies, I’ll make a blockbuster if someone wants to give me a budget anywhere in the world. However, I do believe that limitations make us better filmmakers. With all the things you have to consider when making a bigger movie: the unions,...

From Dan Bush, the director of such films as The Signal and The Reconstruction Of William Zero comes The Vault, a horror film that finds two estranged sisters robbing a bank vault in an effort to save their brother. The only problem is, it's no ordinary bank job, and definitely not an ordinary vault. The movie stars James Franco as Ed Maas, an assistant bank manager who promises to help guide the sisters through the... Read More...

Here's a fun trailer for an interesting looking Heist film that also happens to be a horror movie. The film is called The Vault and it stars James Franco. I like the unique concept of the film with its bank robbery horror movie plot and it looks like it could be a good movie! Here's the synopsis:
Two estranged sisters (Taryn Manning, Francesca Eastwood) are forced to rob a bank in order to save their brother. The heist begins smoothly, but mayhem ensues when the defiant bank manager sends them to a basement-level vault—home to something truly evil.
The Vault was directed by filmmaker Dan Bush (Ghost of Old Highways, The Reconstruction of William Zero). The movie is set to be released on September 1st. Check out the trailer and let us know if the movie interests you.

If you could slap a dudebro fedora on Blade Runner, you’d get this ridiculous attempt at a mind-blowing sci-fi drama. Pretentious yet accidental silly. I’m “biast” (pro): big science fiction geek

If you could slap a fedora on Blade Runner — not a cool Indiana Jones sort of fedora, but the sort of fedora that has come to be a signpost of clueless dorky misappropriation of style and attitude — you’d get Synchronicity. A completely ridiculous attempt at a mind-blowing science-fiction drama, this amalgamation of pretentious yet accidental silliness gives us physicist Jim Beale (Chad McKnight), who is, like, a super genius, totally for real, but also put-upon and misunderstood. Because of course he is. Still, someone compares him to Nikola Tesla, he’s that awesome. And he’s just built a wormhole generator,...

Director Dan Bush’s latest effort The Reconstruction of William Zero is a sci-fi drama that’s much heavier on the drama than on the sci-fi. It’s a film about loss and the lengths to which we will go to stop feeling grief. It’s a film about the dissolution of marriage and about facing death. It might be unbearably sad if it weren’t so well made.
Conal Byrne plays William, a geneticist and married father who one day wakes from a coma with hardly any memory of his own life. There to help him recover is a man who looks exactly like him and has unique knowledge of William’s life, including the tragedy in his past that led to a split from his wife Jules (Amy Seimetz, A Horrible Way to Die). The more William learns about himself, the more he begins to understand just how...
