In an age where special effects reign supreme, there’s one aspect of the filmmaking process that hasn’t gone through a radical transformation — music. Some of the best movies in any given year would be sorely lacking without their memorable scores, and this has remained true well into the first two decades of the 21st century.

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy (2004) is showing on Mubi from May 14 - June 13, 2017 in the United Kingdom. It is hard to imagine a more perfect marriage of director and source material than Guillermo Del Toro with Hellboy. Mike Mignola’s graphic novel series about a demon put to work by the Feds could have been tailor-made for the Mexican fantasy auteur. Hellboy’s panels pit brutish monsters against mad visionaries in dank subterranean crypts, drawing on European folklore and making a fetish of clanking machinery, crumbling ruins and otherworldly magic. Mignola’s primary theme is always the past’s unshakeable hold over the present, the dead’s habit of returning to haunt the living. All of the above are the sort of gothic tropes that have recurred again and again in some form or other throughout Del Toro’s filmography too,...

This week marks the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the latest cinematic entry into J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. But instead of concentrating on only the Harry Potter movies, I wanted to take a look at some of the coolest “fantastic beasts” that exist outside the realm of that franchise, and basically use this as a means of pointing out some of my favorite crazy creatures in film history. The only criteria: none of the beasts chosen for the list can be animals that currently exist in our real world. So with that out of the way, let’s get on with the choices!
Cyclops, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
Having only one eye is a given, but aside from that, most depictions of Cyclopses (Cycli?) that I’ve seen in movies basically just look like giant versions of men. This one adds furry legs and hoofed feet,...

"You're a wizard, Harry!"
It's hard to believe it's been 15 years since we first heard Robbie Coltrane deliver that line in character as Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first of what would turn into eight total fantasy films based on the beloved "Harry Potter" book series by J.K. Rowling.
Nov. 16, 2001 marked the day the world was introduced to Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley. Potterheads quickly fell in love with their unbreakable bond on-screen, which was noticeably just as strong when the cameras weren't rolling.

Tom Felton is heading from Hogwarts to Central City.
The Harry Potter actor — who memorably portrayed sniveling bully Draco Malfoy in all of the Potter films thus far — has joined the cast of The CW's comic book TV series The Flash as a series regular. He'll play Julian Dorn, a Central City Police Department crime scene investigator who "suspects there’s more to Barry Allen than just his good guy reputation.”
This will be Felton's first big role in an American superhero property, but not his first go-around on television: he's had stints on shows like Labyrinth, Full Circle, and Murder in the First since graduating from the Potter franchise. It'll be interesting to see if he leans into his villainous tendencies (most Flash viewers will clearly know him best as Draco), or if the character will be a decent guy himself who just so happens to think something's up with Barry.

Another top film here is “The People Vs. Fritz Bauer”. If you saw the German submission for the Academy Award this year, “Labyrinth of Lies” you will know the story, but will find this film much, much more authentic and engrossing. It is the real story of the boss of the young man “Labyrinth” who is the true life hero.
Audience Award Winner at the Locarno International Film Festival, World Premiere Toronto International Film Festival 2015. Cohen Media has U.S. rights.
Its L.A. premiere will be Tuesday, May 24, 7:30 pm Laemmle’s Music Hall. Drama, Germany, 2015, 105 minutes, Director: Lars Kraume, in German with English subtitles
Top German actors Burghart Klaussner (“The White Ribbon”) and Ronald Zehrfeld (“Barbara”, “Phoenix”) star in this riveting historical thriller, which chronicles the staggering efforts of German district attorney Fritz Bauer to bring Nazi war criminal Adolph Eichmann to justice.
Few figures encapsulate the conflicted character of postwar Germany better than Fritz Bauer, the Attorney General who was instrumental in bringing the elusive Adolf Eichmann to trial in Israel. This film is both a portrait of this complex man and a riveting historical thriller that chronicles the Herculean efforts and tremendous risks undertaken en route to apprehending the chief engineer of the Nazis' Final Solution.
In the late 1950s, Germany flourishes under the economic miracle, and grows increasingly apathetic about confronting the horrors of its recent past. Nevertheless, Fritz Bauer (Burghart Klaussner) relentlessly devotes his energies to bringing the Third Reich to justice. One day Bauer receives a letter from Argentina, with information about Adolf Eichmann. He is excited by the promising lead, but obstructed at every turn by authorities with Nazi ties, many of them former higher-ups under Hitler, now in top government positions. Bauer journeys to Jerusalem to seek alliance with Mossad, the Israeli secret service. This is an act of treason — yet committing treason is the only way Bauer can serve his country.
Fritz Bauer was the Attorney General portrayed in “Labyrinth of Lies.” This is the story that led up to the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials.

When the women are finally reunited, they share a watershed vacation in 1962 in a seaside resort, enjoying the intimacies of life, love and faith. “Children Of Giant”

La Premiere
Documentary, United States 2015, 85 minutes
Director: Hector Galan
Thursday, May 19 at the Laemmle's Town Center, Encino at 7:30 pm
Marilyn Moss, George Stevens biographer, M.G. Lord, Elizabeth Taylor biographer Plus Earl Holliman (actor from the film) and Jim Silke join the panel discussion, moderated by Nick Redman.
Sixty years after the Hollywood blockbuster that dared tackle the issue of prejudice against Mexican-Americans, “Children Of Giant” explores the cultural and social legacy of the landmark 1956 drama. Starring a legendary trio—Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean—Giant is the epic story of a powerful West Texas ranching dynasty, and the Anglo-Latino tensions their characters encounter. Edna Ferber, the daughter of a Hungarian-born Jewish storekeeper, whose own encounters with discrimination informed her work, bases the film on the novel. Similarly stirred to address human rights issues after his WWII military service, Oscar-winning director George Stevens embraced the book’s controversial themes of feminism, class division and racism in the post-war American Southwest. The lavish production had an enormous impact on the dusty little town of Marfa, Texas, and the Mexican-Americans who saw it as a first exposure to their second-class status.
Rare behind-the-scenes footage and clips from the movie complement interviews with surviving cast and crew, film historians, as well as residents whose lives mirrored the social issues explored onscreen.

Developed in only the last 30 years and using both ancient farming techniques and high-tech innovations, Israel’s food scene is among the most dynamic in the world. From Tel Aviv’s most exclusive eateries to street bazaars, Israeli-American Solomonov interviews chefs, home cooks, farmers, vintners, and cheese makers drawn from the more than 100 cultures that make up Israel today — Jewish, Arab, Muslim, Christian, and Druze. This journey to his homeland reaffirms that Israeli cuisine is a beautiful and delectable reflection of the country’s unique diversity.
In a gastronomical expedition, celebrity chef-restaurateur Michael Solomonov zigzags Israel to savor a food revolution rooted in centuries-old tradition.
Israel’s food scene is among the most dynamic in the world, extending beyond falafel and hummus to include tasty ethnic and regional specialties. Having won the James Beard award for embracing these authentic flavors, Israeli-American Solomonov returns to his homeland to discover his culinary heritage anew. From Tel Aviv’s most exclusive eateries, to street bazaars, to simmering pots in family kitchens, “In Search Of Israeli Cuisine” excites the taste buds with multi-cultural recipes passed on and elevated. But even food is not immune to sectarian conflict, as Palestinian cooks chafe when their savory secrets are adapted by Jewish chefs. Equally eye-opening is the story behind the ingredients that Israel produces using both ancient farming techniques and high-tech innovations. Combining a procession of mouthwatering dishes and interviews with chefs, home cooks and farmers of all backgrounds, Oscar-nominated documentarian Roger Sherman presents a diverse portrait of the Israeli people told through the very personal language of food.

“A La Vie” / “To Life”
Drama, France, 2014, 104 minutes
Director: Jean-Jacques Zilbermann
Starring: Julie Depardieu, Johanna ter Steege, Suzanne Clément
Audience Award Winner at Warsaw Jewish Ff 2015
Breaking Glass has U.S. rights.
Veteran French writer/director Jean-Jacques Zilbermann (“He’s My Girl” - Lajff 2011) sets his engaging new drama in postwar Paris where Hélène (Julie Depardieu), a young Auschwitz survivor rebuilds her life while searching for her friends from the camp, Lily and Rose (Johanna ter Steege, Suzanne Clément). When the women are finally reunited, they share a watershed vacation in 1962 in a seaside resort, enjoying the intimacies of life, love and faith. This emotionally complex film about the sustaining power of women’s friendship was inspired by the director’s mother and her annual vacation with the friends she made in the camps. Don’t miss this masterful film starring a trio of award-winning actresses.
“Children Of Giant”
Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqBYPp8IfQw

Director: Roger Sherman
Starring: Michael Solomonov
Michael Solomonov, the James Beard award-winning celebrity chef-restaurateur travels across Israel to savor a food revolution rooted in centuries-old tradition.

Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s Ambi Pictures will finance and produce a remake of Christopher Nolan’s iconic, twist-laden film Memento.
Writer/director Christopher Nolan adapted Memento from a short story by his brother Jonathan Nolan titled “Memento Mori”, and the unusual, neo-noir psychological thriller took audiences by storm upon release in 2000 and has since achieved cult hit status with a fervent following.
Starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano, Memento was lauded for its nonlinear narrative structure and motifs of memory, perception, grief, and self-deception. The film was a box office success and received numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
Nolan’s original Memento follows Leonard (played by Guy Pearce) who is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife’s killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare,...

The career of Academy Award nominee Guillermo del Toro is a curious thing. He is celebrated as a writer-director-producer of unique and compelling vision, having delivered movies such as Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth, and yet his projects seem as likely to stall before principal photography as they are to get in front of the cameras. He is famed for metaphorically ramming his head against the brick wall of Hollywood studio financing, with The Hobbit and At The Mountains Of Madness featuring among his personal non-starters – but he also creates giant blockbuster fare, such as Pacific Rim. Now, however, it seems that del Toro is taking stock, and looking to return to a long-gestating indie project, titled Silva.
While promoting his latest release, Crimson Peak, del Toro discussed his plans with The Guardian – explaining the logic behind a move that might well generate one of the most intriguing films currently in development.

There must be something in the water down in Mexico, something that breeds incredible cinematic visionaries quite unmatched by their professional peers. Alongside filmmakers like Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro is one such talent – and it appears he has a lot on his plate.
Following the recent announcement that a sequel to Pacific Rim was hoped to be released in 2017, del Toro has also let slip that he intends to shoot a very small black and white picture before he sinks his teeth into another helping of kaiju/robot mayhem.
Considering his notoriety for being a director involved in certain projects that fail to get off the ground or result in his departure for varying reasons, it’d seem unsurprising that del Toro would remain relatively tight-lipped regarding his career choices – but with this double whammy of film news, I for one couldn’t be happier.

The CW made an interesting choice airing the two part miniseries Labyrinth. Interesting meaning confusing. While it’s in the same vein as the network’s hit historical drama, Reign, it lacks the production and entertainment value to put it on the same level. The characters, although possessing a certain amount of charm, fail to create a lasting impression with viewers. The story carries some interesting caveats with its off the beaten path focus on the Cathar massacres during the Crusades, a history that is often marginalized – if remembered at all, but comes up short in terms of execution.
Part one of Labyrinth moves seamlessly back and forth between present day and France in 1209, weaving together the stories of two young women – Alice (Vanessa Kirby) and Alais (Jessica Brown-Findlay). Female protagonist? Check times two. A time period when everyone rides horses? Sure. Cool jewelry? Got it. When the CW acquired "Labyrinth," a four-hour miniseries executive produced by Scott Free (Ridley and Tony Scott's company), CW president Mark Pedowitz called this a "fun companion piece" to the series "Reign." I'm not sure I would call "Labyrinth" fun, but I guess if you think 1209 and 1542 are more or less the same time period, well, then why not snap up this project? But to say "Labyrinth" and "Reign" are of the same species is sort of like saying giraffes and lions should be caged together since they're all zoo animals and, as such, should get along swimmingly. Fans of the book by Kate Mosse will probably be put off (or have already seen this, as it aired in the U.K. and in Canada years ago), and fans of "Reign" expecting an...

No Monty Python jokes here. The CW’s new miniseries Labyrinth, airing Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23, at 8pm Et/Pt, is a seriously engrossing adventure. What’s difficult about making this list is finding a balance between a successful Kubrickian film that either predates or pays homage to Kubrick and, for lack of a better term, is a ripoff. Now that we’ve hit the apex, it’s clear that these are, regardless of influence, quality films. What sets them apart is their ability to evoke Kubrick’s greatness (or inspire it), while delivering a stand-alone masterpiece. If Kubrick took the helm for any of these films, the result wouldn’t delineate too much. Still. Kubrick is a genius because he always kept us guessing.

10. Fitzcarraldo (1982)
Directed by Werner Herzog
What makes it Kubrickian? It’s a film about extreme obsession and the unreasonable lengths a man will go to when consumed by it. Fitzcarraldo is the story of Brian Sweeny “Fitzcarraldo” Fitzgerald (Klaus Kinski) and his entry into the rubber industry.

The CW had a couple fun announcements for its 2014 TCA press tour executive panel with president Mark Pedowitz, including a "Veronica Mars" digital spinoff coming to CW Seed, the network's digital platform.
Details are scarce so far, as the concept has really just come to fruition in the last few days.
"['Veronica Mars' creator Rob Thomas] and I spoke last night, he's very excited about doing this," says Pedowitz. "I don't have a whole lot of details yet, but Rob was very excited to do something for CW Seed."
Pedowitz adds that Thomas' schedule is full right now, with the "Veronica Mars" movie coming out in March, but the CW has "great faith" in Thomas and is ready to take the spinoff wherever, whenever. Pedowitz also says that nothing has been ruled out, including turning the digital spinoff into a TV series.

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2001, and a vintage year for lesser-seen gems...
Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke may have seen 2001 as the year we'd head off to meet alien intelligences in the depths of space, but in reality, its cinematic landscape was dominated by fantasy rather than extra-terrestrials. Rowling and Tolkien dominated the box office, with Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone and The Fellowship Of The Ring earning almost $1bn each, while Monsters, Inc and Shrek thrilled old and young audiences alike.
At the other end of the spectrum of success, 2001 was such a vintage year for movies that we had to whittle our usual selection of 25 films down from an initial selection of more than 40. This is why the decision was made - with heavy heart - to exclude some of our favourite films,...
