Standing in the basement of the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, Billy F. Gibbons is recalling the moment he received his first guitar. He was only 13.
“It was Christmas Day,” the 73-year-old Zz Top frontman tells Rolling Stone. “[All these years later], there’s so many different ways to remain creative and the expressiveness seems to remain as a challenge — it’s exciting.”

Before Jimmy Page laid down some of the best guitar solos in classic rock, he had to learn how to play guitar just like any other musician. He had several teachers along the way, including jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin, who taught Page “a hell of a lot” years before he formed Led Zeppelin.
Jimmy Page ‘learned a hell of a lot’ from jazz guitar maestro John McLaughlin
Several teachers helped make Page the ace guitarist he was in Led Zeppelin.
The homeowner who abandoned the first guitar Page played as a child helped inspire his dream. So did the choirmaster who let young James Patrick Page tune his instrument using the church organ. Or the adult bandleaders who added the teenage guitarist to the Red E. Lewis & the Red Caps’ lineup (where he played under the name Nelson Storm). Or the producers who brought in a still teenage Page...

A version of this story about director the music of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine
Led Zeppelin famously invoked J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” series in several hit songs (“Ramble On” and “Misty Mountain Hop” among them), and if you’re looking for the right composer to reimagine Middle-earth for a multiyear Amazon Prime series adaptation, you go right to the ultimate rock-and-roll composer: Bear McCreary.
But don’t let the long dark hair and drummer vibe fool you, as McCreary can craft a dramatic, haunting score for just about any genre there is. “Sci-fi, fantasy, horror, period pieces, these are all things that inspire me and get me out of bed,” says McCreary with a noticeable jolt of energy. “And “The Lord of the Rings” is the godfather of so much of that.

If pigs start to fly today, we’ll know why. According to Deadline, Charlie Sheen is reuniting with Chuck Lorre for the Big Bang Theory creator’s first comedy series at Max, How to Be a Bookie. It’s been twelve years since Sheen and Lorre stomped off in opposite directions. The duo collaborated on Lorre’s Two and a Half Men for an eight-year run before Sheen snapped and shredded Lorre publicly. Sheen’s outburst led to Lorre firing him from the mega-popular sitcom and killing his character. Ashton Kutcher replaced Sheen’s Charlie Harper on the show after Harper fell on subway tracks in Paris and got crushed by a train. Woof!
Deadline’s report says Lorre and Sheen have mended fences, with Sheen joining the new comedy in a recurring role for the single-camera comedy starring Sebastian Maniscalco. Sheen is trying to make a TV comeback, with...

Led Zeppelin had many songs with fantastical imagery. “Immigrant Song” is a perfect example of a song that blends visions of mythology into an epic rock song. One fantasy author who influenced members of Led Zeppelin was J. R. R. Tolkien, the legendary writer of The Lord of the Rings series. Here are three Led Zeppelin songs featuring Lord of the Rings references.
‘Ramble On’ mentions famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ characters and settings Robert Plant and Jimmy Page | Rob Verhorst/Redferns
“Ramble On” is a song from Led Zeppelin’s 1969 album Led Zeppelin II. Guitarist Jimmy Page and lead singer Robert Plant co-wrote the track. The track references Lord of the Rings with lines like “in the darkest depths of Mordor” and “Gollum and the evil one.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, Plant says he is embarrassed by how his love of Middle Earth made it into his...

Led Zeppelin remains one of classic rock’s essential bands more than 40 years after they broke up. They borrowed heavily from blues legends early on — Jimmy Page blamed Robert Plant for the lawsuits — but the group soon carved their own space in the music landscape. We can’t get enough of the band, and if you’re a Led Zeppelin fan like us, you might want to check out these YouTube channels that help us appreciate the band’s songs even more.

John Bonham went from relative obscurity to international stardom with Led Zeppelin. One musician who hated the band was particularly harsh on Bonham, but fans craved Bonzo’s playing. His drumming was so powerful and revolutionary that you could pick almost any random Zep song and find a mind-blowing beat. Still, some rank above the others. Let’s look at five of Bonham’s best Led Zeppelin beats (in chronological order).
Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham | Richard E. Aaron/Redferns 1. ‘Good Times Bad Times’
Bonham introduced himself to the world on the first song from Led Zeppelin’s first album. And what a first impression.
Bonham always believed drums could be an additional lead instrument next to the guitar. He brought that vision for his drumming to Led Zeppelin and put it on display immediately on “Good Times Bad Times.” He hits the snare in time with Jimmy Page’s guitar,...

Led Zeppelin quickly gained a following when they formed. Singer Robert Plant realized the band might really mean something to their fans when they played to an enthusiastic crowd before their first album dropped. Bassist and multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones was essential to Led Zeppelin’s sound but maybe not essential enough in the eyes of his bandmates. When Plant and Jimmy Page reunited for 1994’s No Quarter without inviting Jones, it was the ultimate slap in the face.
(l-r) Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page in 1994 | Mick Hutson/Redferns Robert Plant and Jimmy Page reunited for ‘No Quarter,’ the closest we got to new Led Zeppelin music
Led Zeppelin became the biggest band on earth not long after forming, partly because American audiences immediately embraced them. But worldwide success came to a sudden end with John Bonham’s tragic death in 1980.
Rumors and hopes of a reunion never really came to fruition.

Led Zeppelin started as a psychedelic blues band in the last 1960s. It didn’t take long for them to prove they had a soft side with their more delicate work in the folk and country genres. They never shied away from unplugging, and the best acoustic Led Zeppelin songs are some of the finest in their catalog.
(l-r) Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Bonham | Michael Putland/Getty Images Tunes you won’t see on our list of Led Zeppelin’s best acoustic songs
Zep’s reputation as a heavy blues band was so ingrained in their image that George Harrison didn’t realize they had a softer side. Founding guitarist Jimmy Page answered the challenge when the famous Beatle complained to drummer John Bonham that Led Zeppelin never wrote ballads. Led Zeppelin had a different approach to music than The Beatles, but they had one thing in common. Both bands burned brightly in their relatively short careers and left very little filler along the way. Singer Robert Plant knew Zep might mean something when they blew away crowds at some of their first shows. Most of their songs had some redeeming qualities if one listened closely, but these overrated Led Zeppelin songs leave something to be desired (presented in chronological order).

When Martin Sheen began pursuing an acting career in the early 1960s, he made a crucial choice that would follow him for the rest of his life. The then-young actor, who was raised by a Spanish father and an Irish mother, opted to abandon his given name of Ramon Estévez and use the stage name Martin Sheen as a way to get more work.
The move paid off, as Sheen was able to build a highly successful acting career that included roles in movies like “Apocalypse Now” and iconic TV characters including President Jed Bartlet on “The West Wing” and Robert Hanson on “Grace and Frankie.” And the actor is still going strong at the age of 81, as he is currently gearing up to star alongside his son Charlie in “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin’s new show “Ramble On.”
Still, as he looks back on his storied career, Sheen has some regrets.
