Are we on the verge of a Livelaissance? Four years after her last live-action movie role, Blake Lively is returning to the big screen this year with "It Ends With Us." The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling toxic relationship novel made waves this past week with the arrival of its trailer, which even came fitted with an appropriately bleary-eyed tune by Lively's buddy Taylor Swift. It's also a reminder of just how well Livelites (which is what I'm calling Lively fans until I come up with a better name) were eating in the 2010s.
We're talking about a decade in which the "Gossip Girl" and "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" alum was in a marijuana-growing throuple in "Savages," played a woman who stopped aging at 29 and dated a young Harrison Ford in "The Age of Adaline," and killed a great white shark with her bare hands in "The Shallows...

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Blake Lively is praising Taylor Swift and Beyoncé for empowering each other in the music industry.
The Gossip Girl alum shared a carousel of photos on Instagram Saturday from Beyoncé’s recent London premiere of her concert film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé. Lively and Swift both made appearances to support the “Cuff It” singer.
The actress also shared a powerful message on the importance of supporting women in the post’s caption. “When I grew up, women were always pit against one another,” Lively wrote. “It took me until adulthood to see that the instinct for women to lift each other up to their highest potential is the norm not the exception. Most of my best friends are women who would’ve been packaged to me as threats or competition. It’s our job to show younger generations the power in aligning rather than dividing.”

Perhaps no other film has shaped Hollywood like "Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope" has since 1977, which is not bad for a movie whose crew regarded it as a joke during production. George Lucas' epic saga of space wizards, space fascists, and plucky everyday heroes long ago in a galaxy far, far away was ground-breaking in its VFX, yet its story looked to the past. Drawing from a myriad of sources across different cultures and genres, Lucas wove a fairy tale as elemental as any in its depiction of the eternal war between the forces of darkness and light.
Due to its success, the cast of "Star Wars" would forever be associated first and foremost with their roles in the film, sometimes to the chagrin of the actors who had led long and illustrious careers before that. For the likes of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels,...

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Armen Nahapetian wants the world to know: “I’m not AI.” The 16-year-old actor is gaining notice, but not only for playing a teenage version of Joaquin Phoenix’s titular worrywart in Ari Aster’s epic dark comedy “Beau Is Afraid.” He added the disclaimer to his Instagram bio because people keep thinking he’s not a real person, but instead a digitally de-aged Phoenix.
“I went to the movie theater a few weeks ago, and one of the employees was pointing at the poster saying, ‘Oh, my God, you’re real!’” Nahapetian recalls, speaking with Variety.
The main poster art features four versions of Beau, all posing in shimmering gray satin pajamas. There’s a Phoenix wearing a farmer’s hat, a Phoenix sporting male pattern baldness, a Phoenix buried under wrinkles — and a smooth-faced Nahapetian. The theater employee’s confusion may seem absurd, but the reasoning makes sense:...

Neil Gaiman is on a roll these days, with his characters appearing in "Doom Patrol" on HBO Max and the Netflix adaptation of "The Sandman" both garnering audience and critical acclaim. News regarding the upcoming "Doom Patrol" spin-off "Dead Boy Detectives" just keeps on rolling, and it's high time that we finally put on our research caps to wrangle as much information as possible regarding the new series based on the comics of the same name from DC, as well as "The Sandman" universe.
Created by Gaiman and Matt Wagner, the titular Dead Boy Detectives first appeared in live-action during season 3 of "Doom Patrol," but now these supernatural sleuths are ready to take the reigns on their own story. We're still a ways away from actually getting to see "Dead Boy Detectives" on the small screen, but here's everything we know so far.

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

The first original of note is The Underground Railroad. This series from Barry Jenkins tells the story of one woman’s desperate bid for freedom in the Antebellum South and arrives on May 14. After that comes Solos. This intriguing anthology has one hell of a cast including Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Constance Wu, and more. The project will premiere on May 21 and each of its seven episodes promises to be quite different.

There’s a scene in Małgorzata Szumowska’s dark, stomach-churning, brilliant drama The Other Lamb that perfectly encapsulates the life-on-the-outside longing of being born into a cult. A charismatic man referred to by his flock as Shepherd is leading his all-female acolytes on foot as they search for a new home; a visit from the authorities set this plan into action. One of his followers–his daughter–is Selah, a teenager whose mother passed away shortly after giving birth. Selah is simultaneously spellbound by and suspicious of Shepherd. As she and her fellow daughters and wives wander the harsh landscape, a car passes by. Selah imagines herself in the backseat, chewing gum, wearing a high school jacket. Her eyes meet the eyes of her imaginary double. And away the car drives.
Achingly memorable scenes like this make The Other Lamb a shattering film, the type of harrowing genre entry that should develop a strong following.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we discuss the greatest movie star of them all: Mr. Harrison Ford! With his new film The Call of the Wild now in theaters, myself and Conor O’Donnell talk about a handful of B-Sides from the legend’s long career. After being a contract player in the late ‘60s, Ford began popping up in stuff like Getting Straight and American Graffiti in the early ‘70s ahead of his breakout turn as Han Solo in 1977’s Star Wars.
Following his first (and only) Oscar nomination for Witness, Ford re-teamed with director Peter Weir for our first B-Side, The Mosquito Coast. Two years later, he worked with Roman Polanski on the Hitchcockian thriller Frantic. After an incredible box...

Ever since seeing Bloodline at the 2019 Popcorn Frights Film Festival, I've had its infectious, synth-infused soundtrack stuck in my head, as the original music by Trevor Gureckis is like its own character in the film, giving the serial killer story a deadly pulse that hearkens back to some of the most memorable collaborations between John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. Following our top 50 films of 2018, it’s time to zero in on the best performances of the year. Rather than divide categories into supporting or lead–or even male or female–we’ve written about our thirty favorite performances, period. Check out our countdown below and start watching the ones you’ve missed here.

Early read here on Universal’s Night School which is tracking for a $9.5M opening day and a weekend that’s between $27M-$29M. While $30M would be a sweet take, that’s still an impressive number in these times for a comedy, Uni had the previous best opening this year with its R-rated teen pic Blockers at $20.6M.
Warner Bros. animated pic Smallfoot will own second with a $6M Friday (a few cents more than their 2016 Storks $5.7M opening day), and a three-day that’s between $20M and $22.5M. Two films in the final weekend of September, opening to $20M, seriously, exhibitors aren’t complaining especially with this month on track to be the second best ever with around $621M after last year’s record $698.5M.
Amblin’s via Uni The House With a Clock In Its Walls looking at a second weekend estimate of $13.7M,...

Blake Lively has been making her mark on fashion for the last decade and we hope she'll never stop stealing attention on red carpets or out on the street. With every stunning ensemble choice, we obsess a little more over Lively and clearly we're not alone because the A Simple Favor actress earned a spot in the final round of voting for the Style Star of 2018 at this year's People's Choice Awards! Dating back to her Gossip Girls days, the blonde bombshell proved time and time again that she has never been afraid to take fashion risks on or off the red carpet. The craziest part is however, is that The Age of Adaline star doesn't use a stylist like most Hollywood...

Blake Lively has a problem as old as the patriarchy that created it: When you’re nothing if not a beautiful woman, you’re nothing if not a beautiful woman. So when Lively became a star after winning the role of it girl Serena van der Woodsen on the CW’s soapy and hyper-sexualized “Gossip Girl,” it was easy for viewers to chisel her down to the most obvious of her charms.
At that nascent stage of Lively’s career — after “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” but before “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” — it was easy for audiences to conflate her with the character she played on television. Born into an affluent family that already had both feet planted in showbiz, Lively’s first screen credit was in a low-budget film that her father directed, and she landed her first Hollywood part after her brother asked his...

One year after “Riverdale” became a hit as a dark retelling of Archie Comics stories, Netflix is betting on the same strategy working for its witchy counterpart.
Following the first peek at “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” earlier this month, Netflix has shared an extended glimpse at the character and the supernatural world she inhabits. Kiernan Shipka steps into the role made famous on TV by Melissa Joan Hart, this time as a Sabrina with a few more problems to face than the perils of high school.
“The Age of Adaline” director Lee Toland Krieger takes up the same role on the pilot, after previously jumping behind the camera for “You” and the aforementioned “Riverdale.” The latter series also served as the first showrunning gig for Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who created this TV version of the Archie Comics classics.
Lest you fear that this incarnation of “Sabrina” would be bereft of Salem,...

Harrison Ford is in negotiations to star in “Call of the Wild,” Variety has learned.
If a deal is reached, the “Star Wars” actor will play John Thornton, a prospector braving the Yukon on the hunt for gold. The big-budget film is being adapted by 20th Century Fox from the classic 1903 Jack London novel about the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s. It has impressive cinematic as well as literary pedigree. Thornton was previously played by Clark Gable in a 1935 film version and by Charlton Heston in a 1972 version. Over the decades, “Call of the Wild” has inspired everything from a silent movie to a Snoopy TV special.
Chris Sanders (“The Croods”) is directing the film, which will have a script by Michael Green (“Logan”). Erwin Stoff is producing with Diana Pokorny serving as executive producer and Ryan Stafford working as co-producer. Steve Asbell will oversee the production for Fox.
