Folk horror aims for the darkest parts of our imaginations. The creatures that dwell out of sight can frighten and speak to larger cultural concerns. Ishana Shyamalan tackles the genre in her debut feature, The Watchers. With some interesting mythical characters, The Watchers touches on some interesting topics. However, a frustrating screenplay and questionable structure sink the film, especially in its final act.

Plot: A young artist gets stranded in an extensive, immaculate forest in western Ireland, where, after finding shelter, she becomes trapped alongside three strangers, stalked by mysterious creatures each night.
Review: There’s no denying that there’s a tremendous amount of pressure on writer/director Ishana Shyamalan with her debut feature. Her father’s reputation will always follow her but let’s not pretend like that’s entirely a bad thing. Unlike many first-time directors, she was able to hone her craft as a 2nd Unit Director on many M Night productions. This allows her to skip some of the steps common for most young filmmakers, and avoid easy trappings. If there’s one thing that’s clear after experiencing The Watchers: we most definitely have two Shyamalans out in the world, for better or worse.
And it goes without saying that I’ll be avoiding spoilers as...

A well-paced supernatural horror movie that’s built atop a high-concept premise, sustained by impressively elegant direction, hobbled by some of the clunkiest dialogue you’ve ever heard (to say nothing of the non-characters forced to speak it), and then undone by a twist ending so clearly telegraphed from the start that it might as well have been sent to the third act by Western Union, “The Watchers” offers ample evidence to suggest that first-time feature director Ishana Night Shyamalan — of the M. Night Shyamalans — probably wasn’t the most rebellious of children.
If there’s much about her debut that left me wishing the apple had fallen a little further from the tree, there’s also no denying that the “Unbreakable” filmmaker’s daughter has the skill to follow in her father’s footsteps, which she does here even when the material is begging her to blaze her own trail.

“Try not to die!”
When Dakota Fanning’s Mina prepares for a night out with a bird on loan from the pet shop, she gives him that warning in jest before bolting out the door. Little does she know, the sunny yellow bird will soon parrot that phrase back to her as she faces unimaginable horrors deep in the woods of Ireland.
Thankfully, the real bird had a more calming presence on set. “Her real name was Sunshine. She was great! Easygoing. No problems. Got a lot of attention. Everyone really loved her and took really good care of her. She was munching on blueberries most of the time in her little cage,” Fanning says of her feathered co-star.
“The Watchers,” in theaters Friday from Warner Bros., follows Mina as she finds herself trapped in the forest with three strangers, forced to abide by the rules of mysterious malevolent creatures each night.

Oh, snap. Josh Brolin has joined the all-star cast of the new Knives Out mystery movie.
Rian Johnson is furiously casting up Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which, like the other installments, is being headlined by Daniel Craig
The Netflix feature is heading toward an early June production start in the U.K. and already has a sizeable list of suspects (and maybe a murder victim or two) in the form of Challengers’ Josh O’Connor, Civil War actress Cailee Spaeny, Ripley star Andrew Scott, Scandal alum Kerry Washington, screen and stage veteran Glenn Close, Hawkeye straight shooter Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis, who starred in thriller Luckiest Girl Alive for Netflix.
Plot details and character information are being kept in the bodybag, but the thriller is expected to follow the same deliciously elliptical path as Johnson’s previous Knives Out mysteries. Eccentric, Southern-fried detective Benoit Blanc (Craig...

Awolnation — aka Aaron Bruno — has announced a new album titled The Phantom Five. Ahead of its August 30th release comes the single and video “Jump Sit Stand March” featuring Dead Sara singer Emily Armstrong.
The song “Jump Sit Stand March” finds Bruno and Armstrong trading verses, with Armstrong in full scream mode — a sharp contrast to the tune’s melodic chorus. An accompanying music video depicts the two singers in a diner, as they end up slow-dancing on top of the counter.

“We’ve played a few shows with Dead Sara over the years and I’ve always been a fan of Emily’s voice,” stated Bruno in a press release. “She is a vocal superstar. Diablo 4‘s massive Season 4 update has been out for a couple of weeks. In that time, fans have discovered not just reasons to fall in love with the game again but some truly broken new builds capable of surviving even the game’s toughest challenges.
So if you’re finally working your way to Diablo 4‘s massive new endgame, here are what some of the game’s best players think the best builds are for every class.
Best Diablo 4 Barbarian Build: Dust Devil Double Swing
Full Build
Try to be surprised, but there are actually several viable Barbarian builds out there at the moment. No matter how hard they try, Blizzard just can’t keep that class down for long.
While there is a debate over the absolute best Barbarian build, this Double Swing Dust Devil build from Diablo 4 streamer (and Barbarian god) Rob2628 may be your best overall bet for most endgame content.

The year of 2022 was extremely fruitful for remarkable horror films, as we saw such genre’s gems as Pearl, Barbarian, Men, and Scream. All these films demonstrated the current trend that implies moving away from the jumpscares. Nevertheless, they make a movie kind of nostalgic and appealing for today's veterans of the genre.
Luckily, there was a movie, originally set for release on Paramount+, that became a worldwide commercial success just because of the proper use of this horror mechanic. Two years after its release, it’s now conquering Netflix’s global chart.
Its plot revolves around Dr. Rose Cotter, a therapist who witnesses a bizarre suicide of a patient and later has the visions of it tormenting her. She can’t explain the horrifying hallucinations she is seeing, and that’s why she starts strongly believing it is a supernatural entity from another world that takes more and more control over her life.

After establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s hottest horror filmmakers with the 2022 mega-smash “Barbarian,” former “Whitest Kids U’Know” star Zach Cregger, seems ready to take an even bigger swing with his second directorial effort. First up, there’s Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. That film now has an announced release date of June 26th 2026. House Of The Dragon's Milly Alcock stars in the title role in the film and Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow will mark the second official film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe of movies.
The first film is of course Superman: Legacy which is set to release in the summer of 2025.
We’ve previously heard noises that this version of the character is going to be harder-edged than previous screen incarnations of the Supergirl character.

From New Line Cinema and producer Zach Cregger (Director: Barbarian) comes the upcoming sci-fi/horror movie Companion, which has been dated for theatrical release.
Companion will be released into theaters on January 10, 2025.
Companion has been rated “R” by the MPA for…
“Strong violence, sexual content, and language throughout.”
The film’s cast includes Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets,” The Boogeyman) alongside Rupert Friend (Separation), Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Lukas Gage (“You”), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), and Jack Quaid (Scream, “The Boys”).
Described as a sci-fi/horror movie, Companion will mark the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who also wrote the script. At this time, plot details are under wraps.
In other words, we have no idea what to expect from this one. Stay tuned for more.
BoulderLight’s Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz will also produce along with Vertigo’s Roy Lee. BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and...

DC Studios is wasting no time in setting a release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now that the movie has found its director.
The high-profile movie will fly into cinemas on June 26, 2026, DC and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday. It is the second film to receive a release date since James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to overhaul DC under the new banner DC Studios. The first was Superman, which Gunn is currently shooting for a July 2025 release date.
Flimmaker Craig Gillespie was tapped by Gunn and Safran to shepherd Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon). She’ll play Superman’s Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. The feature film, from a script by Ana Nogueira, is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic, and will depart from the earnest take on the character seen on the CW Supergirl series.

The Shyamalans are joining the Cronenbergs on making horror and thrillers a family business. While the patriarch, M. Night, has his own new project with the Josh Hartnett suspense film Trap, his daughter Ishana has taken up the mantle of mystery horror in the new film The Watchers. Warner Bros. Despite pretty good reviews (including ours), The First Omen underperformed dramatically at the box office this winter. It was meant to reignite The Omen franchise. Still, with a domestic total of just under $20 million, it seems unlikely it succeeded in this goal (although it made an additional $30 million overseas). Initially, The First Omen was intended to be released directly to streaming via Hulu before getting a theatrical bow, and now it’s finally making its way to the service. The movie is set to come out on Hulu on May 30th, only two days after its PVOD release on May 28th.
Notably, the film will be released on physical media, with a Blu-ray and DVD release set for July 30th. That’s a departure for Disney, who produced the film, as their horror breakout hit Barbarian has yet to come out on Blu-ray or DVD.

The year of 2022 was quite fruitful for horror features, as we saw such genre’s gems, as Barbarian, The Menu, Smile and Scream. However, they all didn’t make enough noise to be everywhere on the Net not only at the time, but over the course of these 2 years too.
There is one movie which obviously managed to do so, given the enormous amount of memes, viral videos and Halloween costumes inspired by it. It’d be surprising to hear that it appears to be a sequel, but it definitely overhyped the original movie.
Its plot focuses on the life of a mentally ill young woman forced to live with her abusive parents and her husband at the farm. She can’t stand this way of life and lusts for the glamorous life of a chorus girl or a film star, but her dreams don't seem to come true.

There are many fans of the horror genre who only enjoy horror when it is poorly made and when it makes them laugh. Those who are actually looking for the scariest plots and the adrenaline rush you can get from watching them are a minority, but there are some movies that would perfectly fit their expectations.
Although people tend to think that really good horror is rare these days, there are a few gems that have been released recently that don't get nearly enough attention. Barbarian, Zach Cregger's directorial debut, is definitely one of those movies that deserves a lot more buzz than it already got upon its release.
Is Barbarian Worth Watching?
Distributed by 20th Century Studios and scheduled for release in 2022, Barbarian has won the hearts of critics and has an excellent score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, if you're looking for a fresh horror that doesn't completely rely on jump scares,...

Starring Bill Skarsgård as mysterious housemate Keith, Barbarian follows young woman Tess who rents a house in Detroit for the time that she needs to stay there for her job interview. Upon her arrival, Tess discovers that the house was booked twice for the same period of time and another tenant is already staying there.

Four months of horror releases down, eight to go! With our 2024 Horror Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the other horror movies we can’t wait to check out this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they’re likely to show up at some point in 2024. Here we go:

The most famous Pennywise actor, Bill Skarsgård, has already made his name as a brilliant horror performer while starring not only in the two It movies, but also in the chilling series Hemlock Grove (2013–2015) and Castle Rock (2018–2019).
Continuing his major career trend, he also took part in a smaller-scale project, which didn’t suffer from its modest budget at all. On the contrary, it received lots of hype and even now, two years after its release, it is holding the second place in Netflix’s chart.
The movie’s plot revolves around the haunted house, and this trope is obviously used in an enormous number of horrors. However, here the monster, typically hiding in the basement, doesn’t turn out to be the main evil, damaging the characters the most.

In recent years, a new wave of horror has emerged – intelligent, artistic, non-standard films that stand in contrast to the horror films of the past. The Witch, The Lighthouse, Midsommar, Hereditary, The Babadook and their lesser-known counterparts formed a new movement in the genre called elevated horror and took it to a new level.
One of the main gems of this trend is the film by Zach Cregger, which was named the best horror of 2022 and received an impressive 93% for a project in this genre on Rotten Tomatoes – Barbarian.
What is Barbarian About?
Tess arrives at night in a dark suburb of Detroit to spend the night in a house she booked through Airbnb. And faces problems right away: the code does not match the lock of the cell with the key, the cell itself is empty, the house manager does not get in touch, but suddenly a man comes out of the door.

While Hollywood has several incredible horror features already, a yet-to-be-released horror movie promises no less than a thrilling horror experience by taping into the essence of Tom Cruise’s one of the most iconic movies. Directed, written, and co-produced by Zach Cregger, Weapons, is being described as tonally similar to Cruise’s 1999 drama film Magnolia.

As he develops his follow-up to hit horror movie Barbarian, writer/director Zach Cregger has been quietly building the cast he needs for his latest, Weapons. Alden Ehrenreich is the most recent addition to an ensemble that already includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner.
Weapons is mostly being kept under wraps, but we have previously heard it described as "an interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia", focusing on missing high school students. Which would not really surprise us given the terrifying intensity and invention of Barbarian.
New Line snapped up the rights to back the new film, which at one point had Pedro Pascal attached to star before his commitment to other gigs including Marvel's Fantastic Four took precedence. In a coincidental quirk, Garner is also in Fantastic Four, but in a smaller role as Shalla-Bal.

Five-plus years following the launch of his film financing and production company, Hammerstone Studios, producer Alex Lebovici finds himself at “a big turning point.” After working for years on “building block” projects that held little to no interest for him on the level of story, he’s been able of late to assemble an increasingly packed studio slate, devoting himself solely to making the “fun, commercial, star-driven films” he likes to watch.
Breaking out in September 2022 with the buzzy horror thriller Barbarian, underscoring the company’s commitment to fresh genre fare with big, original ideas, Hammerstone is looking to recapture the zeitgeist this weekend with Boy Kills World, an action thriller starring Barbarian‘s Bill Skarsgård. Directed by Moritz Mohr, the film has him playing Boy, who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that...

Bill Skarsgård goes on a violent murder spree in Moritz Mohr’s superbly gory action thriller. Here’s our Boy Kills World review.
Gore is not for everyone. That goes without saying, but I’m a big fan of bloody spectacle. There’s just something very appealing about limbs getting torn off, heads spinning and blood covering every inch of the screen.
Which is exactly why I loved Boy Kills World, Moritz Mohr’s exceptionally stylish and gory new action thriller. If gore is not your thing, you prefer substance over style, you may want to take this review with a grain of salt.
The film follows Boy, a deaf-mute man played by Bill Skarsgård, who plots revenge against the Van Der Koy family who murdered his own kin via their yearly Hunger Games-style televised event. He can’t speak, but Boy does have a particularly animated inner voice,...

Last year, New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger and the film’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Cregger’s next film, a mysterious horror project called Weapons. They signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, tasking the company with developing high concept genre projects for them. And they gave a greenlight to the thriller Companion, produced by BoulderLight and Cregger. Last May, it was announced that Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us had signed on to star in Weapons – but Pascal had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with his Marvel movie Fantastic Four, so he has since been replaced by Dune, Avengers: Infinity War, and No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin. Now The Hollywood Reporter has shared the news that Brolin is being...
