Epix is getting into the scripted business right at the peak of “Peak TV.” But for channel president and CEO Mark Greenberg, the move into original series is the culmination of a plan first put into place nine years ago.
From the beginning, he told IndieWire, “Part of the game plan was original series.” But first, the premium service, a joint venture between Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM, had to reach critical mass. A deal with Time Warner Cable two years ago upped Epix’s availability to 50 million homes, giving the channel reason to expand its brand.
Under programming head Jocelyn Diaz (who joined in 2015), Epix is kicking off its scripted lineup this fall with the spy thriller “Berlin Station” and the political satire “Graves.” A TV adaptation of “Get Shorty” will follow in 2017. Epix also continues to air specials and documentaries, including the new series “America Divided,” a discussion about inequality in the U.

The CW announced its mid-season schedule today, including the premiere of new dramas "The 100" and "Star-Crossed" and a move for "The Tomorrow People" to Mondays.
The new series have a sci-fi tinge, but "The 100" especially, with its post-apocalyptic setting and the presence of Henry Ian Cusick (“Lost,” “Scandal”), has our attention. And while "Star-Crossed" definitely seems to appeal to the more romantic types among us, it has a lot of familiar faces and could be worth watching for one or two episodes at least.

We love The CW here at SciFi Mafia. Other than Syfy, Chiller, and Fear, who have a directed advantage, The CW shows far more of Our Kind of Shows than any other network. Currently on the roster they have Supernatural, Arrow, The Tomorrow People, Beauty and the Beast, and Nikita, which is sadly currently in its final, excellent, season.
Happily they’re replacing that with not one but two more of Our Kind of Shows – and with luck, Flash will also be on its way to us, though that wouldn’t be until fall. Today they’ve announced premiere dates for the two new shows, and a schedule shift for two current shows:

The CW is holding both "Star-Crossed" and "The 100" in reserve for mid-season duty, but during the recent TV Upfronts they released a few photos from each show's pilot, and we have a look at them all right here.
Both series have a sci-fi tinge, but "The 100" especially, with its post-apocalyptic setting and the presence of Henry Ian Cusick (“Lost,” “Scandal”), has our attention for sure. And while "Star-Crossed" definitely seems to appeal to the more romantic types among us, it has a lot of familiar faces and could be worth watching for one or two episodes at least.

The CW has long been one of the best supporters of Our Kind of Shows, and at this year’s Upfronts they put even more money where our hearts are. Of the six new shows announced for the fall and winter schedule, four are for us: The Originals, The Tomorrow People, The 100, and Star-Crossed. Now of course more than one has that trademark The CW soap opera-ish spin on it, but hey, not Every show is for every one of us.
Here to assist in our prejudging are synopses for all, via Deadline, and maybe even better, clips and/or TV spots. There’s not really anything new for The Originals, but fans will want to see it all again anyway. The Tomorrow People features the wonderful Mark Pellegrino so it’s my favorite of the four.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fifth and final one announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on The CW.
After targeting teen girls for so long, The CW has widened their demographic focus and in the process have improved their fortunes with three of their five new shows from last year returning. One in particular, "Arrow," has been a big hit for them. As a result this year's line-up sticks heavily with genre fare - sci-fi, supernatural, and even a period piece.
The network's troubled "Nikita" has scored a six episode third season order to wrap up its story lines, no word on when those episodes will air just yet. In fact, specific premiere dates for all their shows have yet to be set.

Exclusive: Jenji Kohan, creator/executive producer of Showtime's flagship comedy Weeds and the series' executive producer Matthew Salsberg have a new comedy project, Whales, in the works at the pay cable channel. The half-hour revolves around a group of brilliant and quirky young people, some of them Harvard and MIT graduates, who move to Las Vegas to live in a lavish apartment while pursuing the $10 million prize at the World Series of Poker. Kohan and Salsberg, who is an avid poker player, are writing and executive producing for Lionsgate TV where they have overall deals. Kohan most recently executive produced the Epix/Lionsgate drama pilot Tough Trade. Kohan and Salsberg also collaborated on the 2007 Fox/Lionsgate comedy pilot Me & Lee starring Lee Majors, which the two executive produced and Salsberg wrote. The project was recently resurrected by Syfy, with Salsberg and Kohan writing/executive producing a new take on it for the cable channel.

Epix has reportedly decided to pass on drama pilot Tough Trade. The premium channel originally greenlit the project in early 2010 and a pilot episode was shot nine months ago. However, Epix CEO Mark Greenberg told Deadline: "It was a combination of running out of time and dealing with distractions, and at some point we had to make a decision whether it works or it doesn't. At the end of the day, it just didn't work." The show, which starred Saw actor Cary Elwes, (more)...

Is Epix ready to commit to a scripted series order? That is what creative types have been pondering in the past few days, following the demise of the fledging premium cable channel/broadband service's first scripted pilot Tough Trade. It was groomed to be Epix's first original scripted series. But 20 months after originally greenlighting it, Epix, a partnership of Lionsgate, Viacom and MGM, has pulled the plug on the project. The show, created by Chris Offutt and produced by Lionsgate TV, revolved around three generations of a Nashvile music dynasty and starred Sam Shepard, Trace Adkins, Cary Elwes, Lucas Black and Joey Lauren Adams. The project, which was once set up at TNT, also boasted big names behind the camera: Weeds creator Jenji Kohan was executive producer/showrunner, Gavin Hood directed the pilot, T-Bone Burnett served as executive musical producer, and Sean and Bryan Furst also executive produced. Originally, Epix...

New York -- Oliver Stone and writer Bruce Wagner have struck a development deal with Epix, with their first project being a one-hour scripted dramatic series called "Still Holding," based on Wagner's novel of the same name.
The series for the premium TV service, which is run by Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM, will explore "the colliding worlds of three disparate people in Los Angeles, and the violent consequences of love and betrayal, of holding on and letting go," Epix said. Stone and Wagner will executive produce. They previously worked together on six-hour sci-fi drama mini-series "Wild Palms," which first aired on ABC in 1993.
"I'm interested in the possibilities in television," Stone said. "When a company like Epix comes along, it's a chance to break new ground. They want to make their mark. They want to entertain and provoke; they don't want their drama or comedy watered down."

Gavin Hood is in negotiations to direct an untitled Alaskan adventure project for Walden Media. Mark Johnson is producing.
Based on Gay and Laney Salisbury's book "The Cruelest Miles: The Heroic Story of Dogs and Men in a Race Against an Epidemic," the true story centers on a 674-mile journey undertaken by 20 men and 200 dogs who rushed a diphtheria antidote to Nome, Alaska, in 1925. The group braved temperatures of minus-60 degrees, a phenomenon known as ice fog and other dangers, capturing the attention of the lower 48 states. One lead dog even got a statue in New York's Central Park.
Sean O'Keefe and Will Staples wrote the adaptation.
Walden is eyeing a summer start for the project, which at one point was in development at Miramax under the title "Ice Bound."
The deal marks the first project for Hood since directing "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which grossed $373 million worldwide.

Country star Trace Adkins is adding authenticity to Epix's Nashville-set drama "Tough Trade."
Joey Lauren Adams, Boyd Holbrook and Claire van der Boom also have been cast in the project from Lionsgate TV, executive producer/showrunner Jenji Kohan and co-executive producer/creator Chris Offutt.
"Tough," whose executive producers include another musician, T Bone Burnett, is a contemporary one-hour drama about three generations of a Nashville music dynasty (Sam Shepard, Cary Elwes, Lucas Black) whose penchant for drink, debauchery and divorce has left it on the verge of bankruptcy.
Nashville native Adkins will play Scared, a friend and bodyguard to Linwood Tucker (Shepard) who is fiercely loyal to the family.
The CAA-repped Adkins, who has sold more than 10 million albums, was the runner-up on the first season of NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice" and has dabbled in acting with the feature "An American Carol" and guest spots on TV's "Yes, Dear" and "King of the Hill.
