From Super Mario Bros in the 90s and on to the recent Assassin’s Creed, it’s fair to say that movies adapted from videogames seldom fare well. But there’s one movie, now sadly lost to history, that might just have bucked that trend: Neill Blomkamp’s Halo.

Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 comedy about a young man who gets into the California porn industry in the late 1970’s and ‘80s. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay.
2. “Braveheart” (available January 1)
Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director, the Mel Gibson-starring drama follows William Wallace’s revolt against King Edward I of England after his secret bride is executed for assaulting an English soldier who tried to rape her.

Earlier this week a Production Weekly rumor that Ridley Scott would be producing a big screen adaptation of Halo hit the net. Apparently the movie would exist independently of Steven Spielberg’s series, which is set to air on Xbox Live.
Well, unless Microsoft is lying to us, there's no truth to that bit of news. They released a statement to Eurogamer that says:
The Halo franchise encompasses many elements, including games, action figures, novels and more. As always, we have many projects in the works that offer us the opportunity to bring in new audiences to the franchise, as we did in the past with Halo Legends and Halo: Forward Unto Dawn. We plan to continue telling the Halo story through innovative channels, but there are no plans for a Halo motion picture at this time.
I'm sure one day a Halo movie will happen, but today is not that day.

It was recently reported that Microsoft is working on a new feature-length "Halo" project that's being produced by Ridley Scott (Prometheus). At the time, it seemed that we were finally getting a "Halo" movie. But now comes word directly from the company that there's no truth to the rumor. "The 'Halo' franchise encompasses many elements, including games, action figures, novels and more," said Microsoft. "As always, we have many projects in the works that offer us the opportunity to bring in new audiences to the franchise, as we did in the past with 'Halo Legends' and 'Halo: Forward Unto Dawn.' For now, it seems, there's nothing in the pipeline.

Microsoft has denied plans to commission a Halo movie involving Ridley Scott.

Microsoft told Eurogamer that while the firm is exploring innovative new channels of storytelling, there are no plans to make a motion picture.

A recent post on Production Weekly's Twitter feed led to rampant speculation yesterday that "Alien" and "Prometheus" director Ridley Scott was involved in a film project based on the "Halo" video game series.
The industry site tweeted that Scott was producing a "live-action, feature-length digital" which "Prison Break" creator Paul Scheuring was writing, indicating it was a separate project to the previously announced, Steven Spielberg-produced "Halo" TV series being made for Microsoft's Xbox streaming service.
Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has now shot down the rumor. They tell Eurogamer:

After having a look at the fundamentals of chord voicings in Part 1, we’ll have a look at other important factors for good chord voicings.
Another basic element of effective chord voicings are so called “Low Interval Limits” (Lil). The lower you get on the piano, for example, the more tricky it is to find chords that don’t sound muddy. Many people trust their ear on these things, which is basically a good idea. However sometimes you might be mislead by the sound texture, for example of your piano that you compose on, to believe something does sound fine when it actually translates into muddyness on real instruments. For every two notes that sound together in a certain interval, there is a limit how low you can go with them without them sounding muddy. Basically you can dissect every voicing with these limits into every internal interval.

Last week saw the release of Kevin Macdonald’s acclaimed documentary, Marley, alongside Peter Berg’s mammoth blockbuster, Battleship, and this week brings with it a handful of new films and, most importantly in my books, the long-anticipated release of The Walking Dead Season 2. Fans of science fiction, especially the kind that involves large space creatures tearing soldiers into bloody pieces, have often cited the 1959 Robert Heinlein novel Starship Troopers as one of the early precursors for that brand of the horror/sci-fi sub-genre.
It makes sense, since the original novel was hugely influential on James Cameron’s Aliens. And, in 1997, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven took on Heinlein’s concepts with a big budget action movie that helped launch the careers of Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and Denise Richards to a new level among genre fans.
In the 15 years since then, a number of people have managed to produce a couple straight-to-dvd sequels of varying qualities and a cartoon series which brings us to Starship Troopers: Invasion, a computer-animated action movie that continues the story using a style that’s somewhat inspired by Japanese anime. That last bit may be attributed to its director,...

There are nearly endless possibilities of how to make the same chord sound, and while some of them sound quite disastrous others have a stellar resonance and are reason for scrolling back in an audio file to listen once again. There seem to be endless parameters that define a chord sound, and often people end up in working their way to their desired sound by trial and error.
This tutorial series tries to shed some light on the reasons that make a difference in a chord voicing and why.
But first of all: what is the difference between a chord and a voicing? While the term chord only defines which notes sound together, a voicing specifies exactly How they sound together. A voicing is the specific structure of how the notes of the chord are spread out over the register.
To understand how voicings work it is necessary to have a basic knowledge of acoustics.

The teaser's now live while Capcom's mech combat game for Kinect gets a demo.
The short is called Gosha and will be released closer to Steel Battalion's June 19th release date. Director Mamoru Oshii has plenty of animated film and television work under his belt including GiTS and its 2008 follow-up, even helming a sequence in the Halo Legends anthology. But he's also been mixing in some live-action work, most recently with his Mmo-as-war feature Assault Girls.
The Gosha short was shot in Poland, but other than that, no details about the film are available.
As for the game's demo, you can grab it now on Xbox Live for free, of course as a 1.01 Gb download.

Although Paul Verhoven's Starship Troopers wasn't a huge box office hit when it was initially released in 1997, it built up a cult following over the years, spawning an animated series plus a couple of direct-to-dvd sequels. Now Sony has decided to offer up another Dtv release that mixes both of these ideas. Starship Troopers: Invasion is a feature-length CG animated film directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina). They debuted a teaser trailer for the movie at WonderCon over the weekend, and if you ask me, it looks like it could pass for footage from a new Halo video game. I guess that kind of makes sense, especially considering that Aramaki also worked on a segment for Halo Legends, but still. I've said before that I'm interested in more feature-length CG movies that aren't aimed at kids, I just hope that the end product will resemble something more than a video game cinematic.

For those of you like myself who are huge fans of the Halo franchise like myself then there's a new book that has been released that is a must own. The book is called Halo - The Art of Building Worlds, and it's packed full of incredible art that was created for the building up of this legendary video game universe. The book was released in celebration of the 10th anniversary the Halo franchise.
The book contains over 400 images designed for the game which includes sketches, concept art and commentary on several of the pieces giving the reader some insight on what they were trying to accomplish. I've included a few exclusive images from the book for you to check out below.
There's some pretty amazing art included in the book, many of which I would love to get in a poster size and framed. This is some stunningly beautiful sci-fi art.

Do we really need another one? Maybe animation will make things better. Sony has announced that they're developing another Starship Troopers sequel, following up two other terrible straight-to-dvd sequels to the 1997 sci-fi military action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven. The new one is titled Starship Troopers: Invasion and will be animated, which isn't the first time in this franchise that has happened - there was as animated series called "Roughnecks" made in 1999 as well. Directing this is Shinji Aramaki, of Appleseed and Appleseed: Ex Machina, as well as a Halo Legends segment previously. This actually sounds awesome. I'm admittedly a huge fan of the original Starship Troopers, although I stayed far away from the sequels, knowing they were terrible. Sony Pictures have launched a new website and blog for an apparent new film in the Starship Troopers franchise entitled Starship Troopers: Invasion. Only this time the film is set to be a CG-animated movie… and not any CG-animated movie, oh no. This one has the involvement of Sola Digital Arts, Inc and a little certain someone called Shinji Aramaki, the anime director and mechanical designer whose work you may know from such anime as Appleseed and its follow-up Ex-Machina. He was also the creative director of the Halo Legends movie.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film, which is also exec. produced by franchise star Casper Van Dien:
A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and...

As news of David O Russell’s departure from the director’s chair of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune sends shockwaves through the internet, now seems like as good a time as any to look back on a few of the epic video game adaptations that never were… or at least haven’t been yet. In the background, behind all the Uwe Boll adaptations and the notorious Bob Hoskins Super Mario Brothers movie, there have actually been a few projects which, at one time or another, threatened to be quite good.
Warning! One of the below has been completely made up for the sake of my own geekish amusement.
Halo: Combat Evolved
The game: X-box first person shooter (Fps) Halo: Combat Evolved has, since it’s release a decade ago, spawned a multi-billion dollar industry – at one time being described as the biggest “entertainment property” in the history of the world ever.

The Thundercats are coming back to the small screen later this year courtesy of Warner Brothers and Cartoon Network. And though the big screen adaptation [1] of Thundercats is currently dead, its brand new cartoon series is sure to breath life into the franchise. Up until now, we've only seen one choice image [2] of the group, but a trailer recently aired during the network's Hall of Games Awards that gives a much better idea of what fans can expect. Check it out below. Thanks to Thundercats Now [3] for the heads up on this trailer. The show look incredibly action heavy with a more than obvious anime influence. Created in tandem by Warner Brother Animation and Studio4°C, it looks almost nothing like the original show and very much like something Hayao Miyazaki might have created. Just populated by the characters you know and love like Lion-o, Snarf, Mumm-Ra, Panthro and Cheetara.

Fans are still calling for a live-action film of Microsoft’s Halo. Given the immense popularity of the franchise, it’s hard to believe an animated film (Halo Legends) was released, and there’s no sign that a live-action version is coming anytime soon. An attempt at a movie was made with Neil Blomkamp (District 9) as the director a few years back, but was canned due to the immense budget.
However, Microsoft hasn’t given up yet, and Manager/Lead Writer/Arbiter Frank O’Connor revealed to Kotaku that a live-action film Will get made. ”There will be a Halo movie,” he said. Some may have assumed the whole debacle with Blomkamp and Jackson has persuaded Microsoft to abandon the project all together, but that’s not the case. “Everyone wanted to do a Halo movie, the director, Microsoft, the highest placed people at movie companies,” O’Connor said.

Reconstruction is the sixth season of the perseveringly long-running web series Red vs. Blue, the machinima sitcom based on the popular Halo video game franchise. It was released online in 2008 and consists of 19 short episodes (5 to 8 minutes, with the exception of the longer 10-minute finale) depicting the further chronicles of gamers' favorite buffoons cum space marines.
My feelings on the Red vs Blue concept as a whole was already stated on my review for the Red vs. Blue: The Blood Gulch Chronicles box set, which contained all of the first 100 episodes—or five seasons—of the series. It's pretty much more of the same here, although the creators from Rooster Teeth have obviously grown an ambition or two. Though set within the same universe, Reconstruction is not a direct continuation of the stories told in the first five seasons, not really, but rather the beginning of a new saga in Red vs.

It has been a while since I had the ol' byline 'round these parts. So you guys must know that a news item of great nerdity must be present, to drag me out of kinda-official semi-retirement (instead of some desperate attempt by our overlord to keep you entranced through the summer). Well, I assure it is.
Cartoon Network has revealed a new Thundercats series from Warner Bros. Animation, due in 2011. Nerd porn fan site Topless Robot got the nitty-gritty from the Toyfare website, not to mention the good title and the invoking of the Four Horsemen for the action figures. Dammit!
Now, like many of you cynical black-hearted bastards, I felt some doubt that this would be good news. Even hearing that Studio 4C (The Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight, Halo Legends, "Transformers Animated", other awesome shit ) was going to be behind the new series, I didn't have much in the way of hope.

Fans of the cartoon heroes of yesteryear will have a smile on their faces when they hear the news that Warner Bros are plundering the video vault and dragging up the feisty feline of Thundercats once again.
There’s a press release below, but the ’21st Century reimagining’ has a nice bit of concept art below. Thundercats has been in the news recently with the tragic murder of Stephen Perry, one of the writers of the original cartoon series.
Here’s the concept art of a fierce looking Lion-o with his Eye of Thundara (?) bejewelled sword (Twitterer jonnyp has corrected me – ‘it’s the Sword of Omens with the Eye of Thundrea embedded in it’ – I was close…)
Here’s the huge press release, which gives up the good stuff.

Forget about the “Thundercats” live-action movie. At this point, it’s probably not going to happen anytime soon, if at all. Until then, though, Warner Bros., through their Warner Bros. Animation division, will be satiating those “Thundercats” needs with a new animated TV show to run on the Cartoon Network in 2011. Also, check out the first promo image released for the show. Via HDroom: Studio4°C, the animators behind The Animatrix, Gotham Knights and Halo Legends, is working in conjunction with Warner Bros. Animation to ensure the Thundercats have “a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series.” The press release goes on to describe the animation style, “Roaring to life through Wba and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, ThunderCats characters Lion-o, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

Anthologies can often be either one of the best ways to explore a concept if executed properly. The idea explored here is Halo and the mythology surrounding it. For the first time, one work tries to take from all other source material like the Halo games, novels and comics in an effort to fully explain the world of Halo. In the process, it also helps actually add new substantial concepts to this much applauded franchise that show that the fight isn’t really over for Master Chief and the Spartans.
As seen before with Batman: Gotham Knight and The Animatrix, Halo Legends is an anthology of seven distinct and separate stories about the characters and ideas of Halo as seen through the eyes of various anime heavyweights. With writers and directors who had worked on everything from Cowboy Bebop to Bubblegum Crisis and Mask to Dragon Ball Z, the spectrum...

The popular videogame gets an anime tribute. Do you have to be a player to enjoy? Well, I.m not and I was swept up in the sci-fi. There are some bits that maybe players might get more out of, but I found Legends an enjoyable journey. Halo Legends is a collection of seven anime shorts that are set within the Halo universe. Halo is a first person shooter game from Microsoft that follows a character called Master Chief and his holographic companion Cortana. Some background might be necessary, but I came to the show with not much working knowledge of the Halo game franchise. I did see that the first anime takes place after Halo 3 and...

Do you remember, at the height of the "Matrix" craze, a spin-off DVD was released called "The Animatrix." It wasn't a movie; rather, "The Animatrix" served up a collection of nine animated short films, each telling a short story set within the "Matrix" universe from different writers/directors. It was a solid idea with, as you might expect, a bit of an uneven presentation. Some shorts are excellent, some are forgettable and some would have been better left out completely.
I'm referencing this 2003 release because "Halo Legends," released yesterday on Blu-ray and DVD, is much the same thing. "Halo" is of course one of the biggest video game franchises on the planet. "Legends" is a similar sort of short film collection, but with a few notable differences: the contributors all hail from the anime world and none of the stories fit comfortably within the "Halo" canon established by the games and the books.

Welcome to the Atomic DVD Shelf. Right here, every Tuesday, we’ll be taking a peek at all of the latest Bluray and dvd releases. In addition to info on extras and our own personal ratings, I’ll also dish up my own recommended disc of the week.
Let’s get started.
Halo Legends
Nate’s rating:
★★★☆☆
Leading this week’s eclectic pack is a disc I never really expected to see, but here it is nonetheless. Halo Legends is a collection of animated vignettes culled from the universe of the popular X-box game and brought to life by Japanese animators. The result is something very similar to The Animatrix or the Batman: Gotham Knight anthologies from a few years back. The animation and storytelling styles vary, but with Frank O’Connor overseeing most of what goes on here, true Halo fans have little to worry about. The Flood, the Elite,...

Law Abiding Citizen
Gerard Butler isn't all smiles and sappy romance. In Law Abiding Citizen, he plays a vigilante determined to exact revenge upon the men who murdered his family and the law that failed to deal with them properly (like assistant Da Jamie Foxx). In his review, Jeffrey M. Anderson discussed the lack of chemistry between the leads and wrote: "Foxx and Butler have nothing even remotely close to their charisma or chemistry; when they're in the room together, it feels like they can't wait to get away from each other. And the feeling from the audience is mutual." Make your own verdict and Rent it on DVD or Blu-ray.

We've got a fairly short list of DVD releases for you this week, but the good news is that some of them are pretty worthwhile! The only major mainstream release is the thriller Law Abiding Citizen starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, but also hitting stores today is the long-awaited blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite, the Coco Before Chanel biopic starring Audrey Tautou, and the enjoyable Chris Rock documentary Good Hair.
