Reacher's back -- unfortunately, he's not alone. Author Lee Child's airport-paperback novel series famously stars a hero that can only be described as a walking, talking tank. Prime Video's "Reacher" series has neatly translated the franchise's popularity on the page to the streaming era, thanks in large part to Alan Ritchson (recently the scene-stealing star of Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare") as Jack Reacher. A far cry from Tom Cruise's capable (if not even remotely book-accurate) casting in the two movies, Ritchson embodies all the physicality described in the original books. After two successful seasons throughout the last few years, however, Reacher is due for his biggest challenge yet ... speaking extremely literally, of course.
Reacher's greatest enemy now has an equally as formidable actor attached to the role. According to CinemaBlend, the hulking villain known as Paulie will be played by Olivier Richters in all his seven feet,...

Star Wars franchise has plenty of projects in the making, there’s two projects we are expecting this year, namely ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ and ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.’ But besides shows, there are a couple of movies in the works as well, one of them being James Mangold’s Star Wars movie, and there’s little we know about it.
Recently, however, SFX Magazin reported that Mangold’s new movie will be titled “Star Wars: Jedi Prime.’ This wasn’t confirmed in an official sense but due to the credibility of the source it’s as good as confirmed.

James Mangold has had an interesting filmography over the years venturing in various genres and not typecasting himself to a certain type of filmmaker. Films like Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Logan, and Ford v Ferrari proved that Mangold could competently handle various genres with great relatability and emotional heft.

Mangold continued venturing into blockbuster studio filmmaking with 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which did not fare well. Remember Phoebe Waller-Bridge? The award-winning English actress, writer, and producer starred in the oh-so-popular series Fleabag and has since then become more and more popular. Most recently, Waller-Bridge contributed to the screenplay of the James Bond film No Time to Die (2021) and starred in the adventure film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), and that seems to have convinced the guys at Amazon to make her teenage dream come true! Today, at its inaugural upfront presentation, Prime Video announced that it had ordered a Tomb Raider series with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as writer and executive producer. The series is based on the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise, which follows the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.
The project comes as part of a deal between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, originating through dj2’s first-look deal with the studio, to develop additional Tomb Raider stories into series and films. Tomb Raider will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games have previously announced a collaboration to develop and publish a new multiplatform Tomb Raider game. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is a more typical summer movie season-starter than last week’s disappointing “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It’s a franchise film and it’s from Disney (which usually starts things off with a Marvel film).
It’s expected to open to over $50 million this weekend and become the first to gross over $100 million domestic. Industry sources suggest that over the summer, at least eight other releases (extending to early September) will reach this mark. A week ago, that guess would gave been 10.
The same sources pegged “The Fall Guy” as likely to gross over $125 million in the U.S./Canada. This weekend will clarify its fate, but the current trajectory suggests around $80 million. That’s a disappointment for theaters as well as Universal, which spent around $140 million to make the film before marketing.
“Apes” is one of several titles now projected in the $125-$150 million range.

New to Streaming: La Chimera, Let It Be, The Last Stop in Yuma County, Kim’s Video, The Dry 2 & More
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher)
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny perhaps garnered more press out of Cannes, another selection involving archaeologists and tomb raiders will have a longer shelf life. Alice Rohrwacher’s latest feature La Chimera ranked quite highly on our top 50 films of 2023 list for good reason. It’s a dreamy, magical odyssey in which the Italian director whisks viewers away with the kind of transportive vision she’s exuded in all her features thus far.
Where to Stream: VOD
Eileen (William Oldroyd)

Imperator Furiosa is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important characters to hit the big screen in the last 20 years. She represents a justified rage often denied to women in post-apocalyptic films, a physical capability typically reserved for men who have been shaved down from slabs of meat on a GyroKone, and serves as a protector of the five wives — a woman looking after other women who are treated as little more than a form of currency. When "Mad Max: Fury Road" director George Miller expressed a desire to make a standalone epic prequel focusing on Furiosa, fans were thrilled at the prospect. Charlize Theron beautifully brought Furiosa to life, so it was only natural that she'd be brought back for the film.
During a special screening of "Furiosa" and a press event with Miller at IMAX Headquarters, he explained that replacing Theron was a matter of logistics.

William Shatner recently told Canadian Press that he wouldn’t rule out returning as Captain Kirk in a new “Star Trek” project if the script impressed him. While the actor’s age might pose an issue as Shatner turned 93 years old in March, that’s nothing a bit of de-aging technology couldn’t fix.
“It’s an intriguing idea,” Shatner said about returning as Kirk. “It’s almost impossible. But if was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it.”
Shatner suggested that he could play a younger version of the Starship Enterprise captain through de-aging technology, similar to how 80-year-old Harrison Ford turned up as a much younger Indiana Jones (circa the character’s age in “Raiders of the Lost Ark...

2023 was not a good year for Disney at the box office. With the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, their films lost money according to Deadline’s”2023 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament” list by Anthony D’Alessandro. ‘Guardians 3’ was just barely in the top 10 as it was in 9th place. To put this into perspective, tenth place was a “Paw Patrol” film.
In fact, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie beat all the Disney films and “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which was released theatrically and on streaming simultaneously.
Four Disney films flopped, and ‘The Marvels’ was the biggest loser. Of the bottom five films, only’ The Flash’ was a non-Disney-owned film.
‘The Marvels’
According to Deadline’s estimates, the film lost $237 million, but that is after you add in home entertainment and TV/streaming numbers. That is a lot of money to lose! It would have been worse without Home video and TV/streaming revenue.

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the biggest box office bombs of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list contains five titles and we are going to reveal them to you, as well as all the relevant numbers. Long story short, out of the five titles on this list, four belong to Disney/MCU and one to Warner, so it seems that Disney is undoubtedly the biggest loser of 2023, especially since some of the titles in question are major ones. Now, let us start!

With major franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar under its roof, Disney typically finds itself on the top of the box-office heap, but that wasn’t the case last year. The company had more than a few failures which found its fortunes falling, and Deadline reports that four of the five biggest box-office bombs of 2023 belonged to Disney.
First up, and least surprising, is The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. As its predecessor grossed $1.1 billion, it was hoped that the sequel would equal that number, but the film turned out to be a bomb of epic proportions, grossing just $206 million worldwide. The film reportedly found Disney taking a loss of $237 million. Yikes.

Moviegoing remains in a sling, evident in Universal’s The Fall Guy currently coming in lower than expected with $28M this weekend. Perhaps Furiosa and Garfield can bring some zing over Memorial Day weekend at the end of the month.
Both hit three-week tracking Thursday, with the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow Mad Max prequel eyeing a $40M-$50M domestic opening over the Friday-Monday span of May 24-27 with Sony/Alcon Entertainment’s Garfield at $35M.
Earlier this week, some box office prognosticators believed it would be a closer race between the two at $30M+ apiece over four days, with the orange cat voiced by Chris Pratt having the edge. But George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Prequel, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has the firepower of Imax and PLFs and a Cannes Film Festival world premiere as a global loudspeaker.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. Say hello to sequel season.
That might as well be the nickname for this summer’s slate of potential blockbusters. Over the next four months, Hollywood is rolling out what it hopes will be a winning mix of follow-ups, reboots and spinoffs from tested franchises like “Despicable Me” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it looks to reinvigorate the shaky movie theater business.
Last summer flipped the script: New properties, such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” ruled, while entries in aging series, like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Mission Impossible 7,” missed the mark. This time out, the tried-and-true may yet prevail. Original offerings like Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s action-comedy “The Fall Guy” and Kevin Costner’s Western “Horizon: An American Saga” will attempt to lure audiences. Taylor Sheridan may not have much to show for his decades of acting career but slaving away at the Hollywood mill did teach him a lesson or two. He then used these lessons to bring Hollywood down to its knees. Churning out award-worthy original content, prequels, and spin-offs at an ungodly pace, Sheridan makes sure the studios perk up as soon as they hear his pen scratching the surface of a paper.
Taylor Sheridan [Photo: Crystal Wise/Fort Worth Magazine]However, Sheridan’s start at the frontlines of television and streaming was not inherently without its flaws. After suffering through an ordeal while securing a platform for Yellowstone, the director encountered and overcame massive obstacles in closing the series arc. His future spin-offs have been easier to pull off, but Sheridan once came incredibly close to losing his deal with Harrison Ford.

Dakota Johnson is a passenger in both life and a yellow taxi cab, seeking connection with whomever is most near. For her, that turns out to be crass driver Clark, played by Sean Penn in the two-hander drama “Daddio.”
Their shared journey is from New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Hell’s Kitchen, with Johnson’s character Girlie determined to get to Clark’s innermost being. He’s not into it. The indie feature written and directed by Christy Hall debuted at TIFF 2023 and will next play at Tribeca 2024.
Johnson produces alongside TeaTime Pictures partner Ro Donnelly, who told IndieWire that Girlie is emotionally “reflective” of the below-the-line team behind the feature itself.
“Because she is our generation of women who are still approaching these men in a nonjudgmental way because it’s fascinating. We’re not threatened by it,” producer Donnelly said. “And that reveals her power,...

Life is finding a way to fill the cast of the new Jurassic World sequel from the original Jurassic Park co-writer David Koepp. The new film has been courting actors like Scarlett Johansson, and recently, it is being rumored that Dev Patel and Colman Domingo are being sought out for roles. It’s a new era for dinosaurs. Jurassic World: Dominion concluded the sequel trilogy and in their alternate universe, humans and Earth’s prehistoric creatures are now living side-by-side in the modern world. But hey, at least we don’t have to worry about locusts anymore, right?
Sources have recently told Deadline that Jonathan Bailey, known for projects such as Bridgerton and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, is currently in talks with Universal about possibly taking the lead role in the popular dinosaur franchise. Indiana Jones Franchise Faces a Rocky Horizon Amidst celebrations, Disney’s 100th anniversary was marred by several box office disappointments, with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny standing out as a stark misfortune. The film’s performance left Disney grappling with an estimated loss of $130 million. Despite a domestic gross of $174 million and a worldwide total of $383 million, the film’s staggering budget of $387 million coupled with only half of box office earnings returning to the studio paints a grim picture of financial recovery. Fan reactions have been tepid, and reviews have echoed this sentiment. Many criticisms point

What happens in Vegas… fuels a year’s worth of hope for theatrical exhibitors.
From April 8-11, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, Universal, Paramount, and Disney — not to mention the faith-friendly Angel Studios and anime distributor Crunchyroll — have four days at CinemaCon to wow theater owners (and the press) with their plans for the summer blockbuster season and beyond. However, there are only so many times that NATO, the MPA, and the studios can say “movie theaters are back!” without sounding like Chicken Little.
The reality is 2024 will be lucky to match the levels of last year, and 2025 has its own challenges if the industry faces another round of strikes. Even so, Adam Aron’s hundreds of soldier-owners from his AMC army will be looking to him for reassurance at the world’s biggest exhibition pep rally.

Andor was such an unexpected, soaring success that we're surprised more of the team behind the series hasn't been snapped up quickly to work on other projects at Lucasfilm. Well, now one of them has – Beau Willimon, who was a core part of Tony Gilroy's writing team (he scripted the superb mini-arc set in the Narkina 5 prison complex), is now aboard to co-write big screen effort Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi with director James Mangold.
Mangold – who previously directed Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny for Lucasfilm – has been working on the script but also turning his attention to production on his Bob Dylan biodrama A Complete Unknown. So it makes sense him adding a co-writer to work on the Star Wars project currently known as Dawn Of The Jedi, which was announced last year at Star Wars Celebration in London.

Beau Willimon (Andor) has been tapped to co-write Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi (working title) alongside the film’s director James Mangold, Deadline can confirm.
First announced at last year’s Star Wars Celebration in London, the project will take place 25,000 years before any Star Wars story we’ve seen before, honing in on the origins of the Force. A release date for the film has not yet been set. Next on the docket for distribution, as far as Star Wars films go, is The Mandalorian & Grogu, which earlier today was dated for May 22, 2026.
Emmy-nominated for his writing on Disney+’s Star Wars series Andor, starring Diego Luna, Willimon is best known for creating Netflix’s acclaimed political drama House of Cards, which ran for six seasons. More recently creating Hulu’s sci-fi drama series The First, he earned an Oscar nomination for his co-writing of the political thriller The Ides of March,...

“House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon will co-write the script for “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi.”
He’ll pen the Lucasfilm project alongside James Mangold, who will also direct the film. It will trace the origins of the Force and will be set 25,000 years before any other “Star Wars” project previously seen.
“It’s a chance to tell the entire story of its own, the birth of the force,” Mangold told Variety in 2023 when the film was announced. “When I first talked to Kathy Kennedy about it, I just said, ‘I just see this opening to make kind of a ‘Ben-Hur’ or ‘The 10 Commandments’ about the birth of the force.’ The force has become a kind of religious legend that spans through all these movies. But where did it come from? How is it found? Who found it? Who was the first Jedi? And that’s what I’m writing right now.

They’re an elite recon unit known as Vulture Squad and they only get handed the toughest assignments. All they know is a Green Beret platoon has gone missing in the area, and they’ve been sent to investigate and possibly retrieve them. What they don’t expect, but who possibly could…was that this was the region of 1968 Vietnam that had dinosaurs in it. Well, no wonder we lost. Disney’s latest foray into the action-adventure genre, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, has proven to be a costly endeavor. A recent analysis of their financial statements indicates a loss exceeding $100 million, casting a shadow over the film’s commercial performance. Despite the star-studded cast and high production values, the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones saga struggled to meet profitability expectations. The hefty budget of $295 million, compounded by significant marketing expenses, has left Disney grappling with a substantial financial shortfall. The film’s box office earnings, while respectable at $383 million worldwide, fell short when juxtaposed against its

While 2023 was a great year for original releases, that is not true for several major franchises, including the fifth installment in Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones series. After being in the Disney oven for a long while, the sequel to 2008’s The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finally saw the light, which, for the first time in the franchise, didn’t see Steven Spielberg helming.
Led by James Mangold, Dial of Destiny had a huge challenge heading into the box office, following its humongous budget, and unfortunately, ended up becoming a huge financial disaster. But despite becoming a huge flop, it’s nowhere close to the biggest box-office flop in the last decade.

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny’s Financial Report Reveals How Much Loss It Suffered After Almost A Year Of The Film’s Release ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

The first film in this series was released in 1981, and Harrison Ford became a legend portraying the iconic character. The fifth and final installment of the Indiana Jones franchise was seen by many as a massive disappointment. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny marked the first and only film in the franchise released under Disney as the last film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, released 15 years prior.
The film received a somewhat mixed reaction from fans, and it introduced the concept of time travel, something that just seemed too strange for some, despite the series also featuring divine powers and inter-dimensional beings.
The film had multiple production problems and delays, some delaying the film’s release by a few years, which led to the overall budget ballooning to the point where the film was too expensive to cancel.

Luxury home entertainment tech company Kaleidescape — which develops and sells high-tech movie players and servers that deliver studio content to homes — is expanding into the cinema business with a sort of “on demand” service for library titles.
In doing so it aims to make older titles more accessible in theaters and open up ancillary revenue opportunities for content owners and exhibitors by attracting more moviegoers.
“We have an ability to bring all this wonderful content back to the big screen,” says Priscilla Morgan, chief operating officer of Kaleidescape. “It’s servicing all the empty screens out there. The exhibitor can curate different themes and be able to service their customers on demand.”
Per the plan, Mountain View, Calif.-based Kaleidescape would sell its hardware to theater owners, prep and supply the encrypted content, and “not take a cut so all the economics stays between the studio and the exhibitor,” explains Morgan.

It's not cheap to make a big ass monster movie, but it sounds like Warner Bros. and Legendary did a damn fine job of being fiscally responsible with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The latest entry in the MonsterVerse franchise has a reported net (emphasis on net) budget of just $135 million. Using the word "just" sounds a little silly when talking about that much money, but considering that blockbuster budgets are so often closer to $200 million these days — if not more — this is a welcome bit of news. It also shouldn't be shocking, honestly. This should be closer to the rule, rather than the exception to it.
According to a recent report from Deadline, director Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong" has a budget of $135 million (before marketing) that was 75% covered by Legendary and 25% covered by Warner Bros. The net part is important because it probably means the figure...
