The Zone of Disinterest: Hazanavicius Reanimates the Holocaust in Moral Fable
What’s most interesting about director Michel Hazanavicius are his valiant attempts at dabbling in multiple genres and styles, clearly exemplifying a broad taste in cinematic subjects and inspirations. Unfortunately, most of these attempts often feel as if they’re missing key ingredients to make them noteworthy. After an earnestly disastrous remake of Fred Zinneman’s The Search (2014), a curiously dull biopic with Godard Mon Amour (2017) and a remake of a meta Japanese zombie comedy in Final Cut (2022), it would seem Hazanvicius works best when navigating humorous elements (like his Oss Bond spoofs from earlier in his career).…...

Who let the dog out?
The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is notoriously strict about its black-tie dress code (one man in a blue tuxedo who committed the fashion travesty of wearing white socks was almost turned away). But on Tuesday night, France welcomed a national hero to the opening night of the 77th edition — Messi, the four-legged scene-stealer from last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall.”
The canine phenom helped brighten things up even as dark clouds gathered over the Palais des Festivals, site of Cannes’ biggest premieres. Despite the foreboding weather and light drizzle, Lily Gladstone, Greta Gerwig, Omar Sy, Jane Fonda, Juliette Binoche and other stars added some glamour and sparkle to the evening.

In his review out of Fantastic Fest last year, Bloody Disgusting’s Trace Thurman raved that Infested (aka Vermines) is “one of the best spider attack movies in years,” noting in his 4-star review that the creature feature uses practical spiders – Real Spiders – as much as possible. The film has been acquired for U.S. release by Shudder, but we don’t yet have a date.
In the meantime, a brand new French teaser trailer for Infested has arrived this week, and trust us when we say it’s as creepy crawly as you’re probably afraid this one is going to be.
Sébastien Vaniček directed the upcoming Infested, which is set in the French projects.

A classic film that not only endures but continues to inspire half a century later is a true marvel. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Wicker Man helped popularize the folk horror genre that continues to flourish with the likes of Midsommar, The Witch, and The Ritual. Its impact extends beyond cinema, from inspiring Radiohead (“Burn the Witch”) and Iron Maiden (“The Wicker Man”) songs to being included in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
In the film, Sergeant Neil Howie travels from the mainland to the Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is appalled to learn that the islanders practice a form of paganism characterized by blasphemous beliefs, degeneracy, doublespeak, and peculiar customs. Like The Bride of Frankenstein, the namesake doesn’t show up until the final moments of the film, but it leaves an indelible impression long after the credits roll.

Japanese comedian Shinagawa Hiroshi has been set as the director of “Among the Dead,” the first project flowing from the co-production and co-financing venture between U.S.-based People of Culture Studios and Japan’s Yoshimoto Kogyo.
The previously-announced project is an English-language, found footage zombie movie in which, following an apocalypse of the undead, one emotionally unstable man abandons friends and family to go live among the few remaining zombies before they’re all gone.
The screenplay was written by father/daughter duo, Andy Cosby and Charlie Danger Cosby, collectively known as Midnight Pizza. Other writing credits go to Brian Caldirola, Patrick Hasson and Juan Carlos Saizarbitoria.
Shinagawa is one-half of the comedy duo Shinagawa Shoji, alongside Tomoharu Shoji, and has a considerable acting filmography in his own right including “Deadman Inferno,” “One Third,” and “Drop.” Shinagawa additionally served as director, writer, and starred in the 2011 comedy-drama “Slapstick Brothers.

Like writers penning their memoirs, making movies about making movies is a rite of passage for many a director. Fellini famously did it with 8 ½, Truffaut with Day for Night, Godard with Contempt and Fassbinder with Beware of a Holy Whore. More recently, Tarantino gave us Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Spielberg The Fabelmans, Michel Hazavanicius made Final Cut and Damien Chazelle, Babylon.
Almost all behind-the-scenes movies share the same theme: Filmmaking is tough, high-stress work that weighs heavily on everyone involved, especially the directors themselves. That’s certainly one of the main takeaways from Cédric Kahn’s very French variation on the subject, Making Of, which premiered out of competition in Venice.
Kahn is both an actor (he played the douchey Gallic lover in Pawel Pawikowski’s Cold War) and talented director, with a series of strong features under his belt that include hard-hitting thrillers like L’Ennui,...

In theaters today from Kino Lorber is Final Cut, from writer / director Michel Hazanavicius and starring Romain Duris, Bérénice Bejo, Matilda Lutz, Finnegan Oldfield. A remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda’s One Cut of the Dead, the film is a blood-soaked love letter to the filmmaking process that is sure to bring a smile to your face. In our latest Q&a, Michel Hazanavicius talks about the origins of Final Cut, pulling inspiration from past filmmaking experiences, and the challenges of making a bloody zombie film that also has a 35-minute single shot:
How did you first become aware of Shin’ichirō Ueda's One Cut of the Dead and how did Final Cut come about as your latest film?

If one must ascribe a theme to the Michel Hazanavicius project, it might be documenting the progression of film history: The Artist the silent era, Redoubtable the new wave, and now Final Cut the dreaded hyper-capitalist streaming era. Considering his 2014 Cannes completion entry and Fred Zinnemann remake The Search, likely one of the most-forgotten works of recent times, seemingly killed all his Hollywood crossover potential in one fell swoop, there’s likely some bitterness about being the rare French Academy Award winner still at the mercy of ever-changing markets.
Having (admittedly) never seen Shin’ichirō Ueda’s One Cut of the Dead I’m unsure to what degree his remake, Final Cut, is riffing or reinventing the basic premise, but it’s not hard to detect some personal angle when a seeming Hazanivicius stand-in, fading French director Remi (Romain Duris), serves as the lead. An opportunity for the helmer comes when...

Pop quiz: You’re a filmmaker. You’re making a zombie movie. The crew is … let’s be charitable and say “adequate.” The budget is somewhere in the high three-figure range at best. Your main actor is a pompous diva. Even worse, your lead actress isn’t giving you the amount of bone-chilling terror that you require. The climax involves her character killing the hungry corpse — also the man she loved — who’s now trying to eat her flesh. If she can’t sell the sense of sorrow and the scares,...

After a rather strange weekend where very little went as planned, we come into the middle of July with what should be a sure thing in… Mr. Tom Cruise! Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Any question about Cruise’s A-list status was clearly put to rest when 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick” became the top-grossing movie of the year with nearly $1.5 billion. Now, Cruise is back as Imf agent Ethan Hunt for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh installment of the hit franchise, once again reuniting him with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie for their third outing in this action-packed world.
It’s been five years since “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” became the highest-grossing movie in the franchise with $220.2 million domestic, $786.6 million worldwide, after a domestic opening of $61.2 million. That opening was also a franchise high, even if it may seem like small potatoes compared to “Top Gun: Maverick.

Kino Lorber has released the brand new trailer for Final Cut, directed by Academy Award® winner Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) and starring Romain Duris (L’Auberge Espagnole) and Academy Award® nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist).
Final Cut opens exclusively in theaters on Friday, July 14, including the IFC Center in New York and the Laemmle Noho in Los Angeles.
Oscar® winner Michel Hazanavicius’ remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda’s cult hit One Cut of the Dead follows a director charged with making a live, single-take, low-budget zombie flick in which the cast and crew, one by one, actually turn into zombies.
Selected as the Opening Night film of last year’s Cannes Film Festival and featuring hysterically unhinged performances from Oscar® nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist), Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz (Revenge), and Finnegan Oldfield (Corsage), Final Cut is a sly love letter to the art of filmmaking and a blood-soaked, hilarious genre farce with a meta-to-the-max premise.

“One Cut of the Dead” is one of the most inventive and fun horror films to arrive in the past decade. So, you know what has to happen when a horror film earns acclaim and widespread notoriety, especially when it is of Asian origin? That’s right, we get a remake! However, with a filmmaker like Michel Hazanavicius’ directing “Final Cut,” it should be more than just a capable remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda’s “One Cut of the Dead,” right?

"There's a weird vibe on this shoot." Ahahaha this film is so much fun! Kino Lorber has revealed their main official trailer for the US release of Final Cut, the French zombie comedy remake of the Japanese cult hit One Cut of the Dead. This first premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival (here's my review). Academy Award–winning writer-director Michel Hazanavicius brings one of the most innovative, joyful, and funniest love letters to film & filmmaking you'll ever see. It's a French remake of the Japanese box office hit One Cut of The Dead (which is also a must watch), going even deeper with its meta-ness by including the Japanese filmmakers watching them do this. It keeps the heart & humor of the original while delivering some of its own unique comedy as well. Coupez! (as it's originally known in France) stars Romain Duris, Berenice Bejo, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Lutz, Grégory Gadebois,...

Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled a July 14th release date and trailer for The Miracle Club, their Dublin-shot comedy that Laura Linney, Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates and Agnes O’Casey lead for Emmy-nominated director Thaddeus O’Sullivan.
The film, which SPC snapped up rights to earlier this year for the U.S., Latin America and assorted territories in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe, will the month prior have its world premiere in the Spotlight Narrative section of the Tribeca Festival.
Pic is set in 1967 and follows the story of three generations of close friends, Lily (Smith), Eileen (Bates) and Dolly (O’Casey) of Ballygar, a hard-knocks community in Dublin, who have one tantalizing dream: to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes, that place of miracles that draws millions of visitors each year. When the chance to win presents itself, the women seize it. However, just before their trip,...

When I first saw One Cut of the Dead, I didn’t think that in a couple of years’ time I would be watching a French remake of it, but here we are with Final Cut.
One Cut of the Dead blew me away when I saw it. Just the perfect original zombie movie, which, while it was well received, I do feel like it should have done even better and got more of a widespread audience. Remaking it such a short time later seems like a strange idea but getting renowned director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) definitely got some eyes on the movie that wouldn’t have been on it before it.

Computer-generated spiders need not apply for the job of starring in Vermin, an upcoming horror movie from Charades and WTFilms that will feature Real Spiders, Variety reports.
Sébastien Vaniček is directing Vermin, which is set in the French projects.
In the film, “An underprivileged suburb has been thrown into chaos following an invasion of venomous spiders. Ordered to be placed in quarantine, the project sees inhabitants living on lockdown alongside terrifying spiders that are becoming bigger and bigger.
“The story revolves around Kaleb, who’s about to turn 30 and has never been lonelier. He’s fighting with his sister over a matter of inheritance and has cut ties with his best friend. Passionate about exotic animals, he comes home one day with a venomous spider and accidentally let it slip away.”
Théo Christine (“Suprêmes”), Finnegan Oldfield (“Final Cut”), Jérôme Niel (“Smoking Causes Coughing”), Sofia Lesaffre (“Les Misérables”) and Lisa Nyarko star.

Besides maybe "Apocalypse Now," there are very few films with such a well-known and documented history of alternate versions as "Blade Runner." Directed by Ridley Scott, the theatrical version released in 1982 was nothing like the director had wanted, complete with a "happy ending" that didn't flow with the rest of the film. The poorly named Director's Cut, made ten years later in 1992, also didn't have Scott's blessing or much of his involvement. Finally, in the "Final Cut" in 2007, the director could tell the story he wanted of Deckard and his intense and existential experience with rogue replicants.
Plenty of scenes were removed or added in all these versions of the film. However, there are still deleted scenes and scrapped concepts that have yet to be seen. One such scene that's not in any version of "Blade Runner" that's been released is an alternate take on a crucial moment between Rutger Hauer...

Final Cut, a workshop supporting films in post-production from African and Arab countries – launched by the Venice Film Festival’s industry section, Venice Production Bridge – celebrates its 10th anniversary this week.
Its goals have remained the same, however, as it continues to provide emerging filmmakers with concrete assistance as well as visibility, all the while strengthening Venice’s role as “bridge builder,” says Alessandra Speciale, its curator. The final selection features titles made by directors from nine different countries: Algeria, Jordan, Guinea, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Central African Republic and Tunisia.
This year, two additional projects were added to the usual six work-in-progress films, thanks to the France in Focus initiative, supported by Unifrance: Karim Bensalah’s debut “Black Light,” sold internationally by The Party Film Sales, and “The Cemetery of Cinema,” directed by Thierno Souleymane Diallo and marking Guinea’s first presence at the workshop.

“Day Shift” has dawned.
The new Netflix film, which liberally mixes action, horror and comedy, stars Jamie Foxx as a San Fernando Valley pool cleaner who doubles as an infamous vampire hunter. When his estranged wife (Meagan Good) threatens to leave town with their young daughter, he springs into action, working to rejoin the vampire hunters’ union. Along the way – wouldn’t you know it? – he stumbles across a vast vampire conspiracy involving housing developments and an ancient mystical temple. You know, that old story.
TheWrap spoke to “Day Shift” director J.J. Perry about how he moved from second unit direction and stunt choreography to directing features (“Day Shift” was produced by the same team behind “John Wick”), what makes the San Fernando Valley so special and what we can expect from further installments in the “Day Shift” saga.

Exclusive: French film sales powerhouse Wild Bunch International (Wbi) has unveiled a slew of deals on key titles on its 15-title Cannes 2022 slate.
The extensive roster of sales bucks a trend out of Cannes where the optimistic mood, as the event returned to full strength for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, did not necessarily translate into hard sales for many indie sales companies focused on high-end festival titles.
Michel Hazanavicius’s zombie comedy Final Cut, which opened the Official Selection, has clocked up close to 30 deals worldwide and the U.S. is currently in negotiation.

Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival will close its 26th edition with a screening of July Jung’s “Next Sohee,” an interesting take on exploitation starring the Wachowski siblings’ regular collaborator, South Korean actress Bae Doona.
The film, which premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week, won’t be the only title to discover on the closing night, however, with a special screening of A24’s horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies” also planned. Directed by Halina Reijn and featuring Amandla Stenberg, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” breakout Maria Bakalova and Pete Davidson, the film shows a party game that leads to murder, all the while maintaining “a taut balance of uneasy tension and wicked humor,” teased the festival organizers.
The announcement came alongside Fantasia’s third wave of titles, finally rounding up this year’s varied selection. Among the world premieres, Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez will bring “The Elderly,” Shuichi Okita “The Fish Tale,...

Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius (“The Artist”) has unveiled his first-ever animation film project at the Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival.
Entitled “The Most Precious of Cargos,” it is an adaptation of the eponymous best-selling book by acclaimed French playwright and children’s books author Jean-Claude Grumberg, who is co-writing the film with Hazanavicius.
Told in the form of a classic fairy tale in 2D animation, it is set during World War II, and tells the story of a poor woodcutter and his wife who live deep in the Polish forest. To the woman’s despair, the couple have no children.
One day, while foraging for food, she sees a bundle fall out of what she believes to be a cargo train crossing the forest. Inside is a baby girl who was thrown from the train by her Jewish father – whose wife no longer has enough milk to feed both his...

On the morning of May 18, hours after the Cannes Film Festival kicked off, Polina Schlicht huddled with fellow international film buyers on the lawn of Le Grand Hôtel. As the managing director of Berlin-based Monumental Pictures, a company that licenses films for Ukraine via Ufd, its distribution arm in the besieged country, Schlicht was surprisingly busy. The previous night, she had attended the premiere of the festival’s opening-night film, a zombie comedy called Final Cut from French director Michel Hazanavicius, and was considering making a deal to release it in Ukraine.
