If there are franchises that have played a significant role in promoting strong female characters, then, Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean has played a crucial role in showcasing such characters. These characters have broken away from traditional gender roles, and brought a unique development to the film, by complementing the male characters of the film, which made the series much more layered and engaging.

It was not the summer box office start that many (myself included) were hoping for. Universal's "The Fall Guy" debuted with just $27.7 million domestically despite earning very good reviews, making for the worst start to the summer movie season in decades. But hope emerged in the form of one of cinema's most cherished franchises as "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" returned to theaters in honor of its 25th anniversary. An old hope, if you will. This once-maligned prequel to George Lucas' beloved sci-fi series helped make up the difference and made its way into the history books. Again.
"The Phantom Menace" re-release brought in $8.7 million domestically over the weekend, which was good enough to land at number two on the charts behind "Fall Guy" and ahead of the previous week's champion "Challengers" ($7.5 million). Internationally, "Episode I" added an additional $6.4 million for a global re-opening of $15.1 million. That's quite a...

While the 2023 Live-Action Remake of Disney’s 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid wasn’t a failure at the box office, it certainly caused quite an uproar. The first teaser trailer is currently the most disliked Hollywood trailer of all time on YouTube. Now the beloved classic is being reimagined by another studio, but this time following in the footsteps of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.
Simply titled The Little Mermaid, the film comes from the independent film studio Msr Media. The film seems to blend elements from the original story but set in the modern day. The film stars Lydia Helen, Mike Markoff and Jeff Denton and is currently set for a 2024 release. The Little Mermaid will also be Rated R for language, violence and brief nudity.

They may be rascals, and scoundrels, and villains, and knaves, but it’s impossible to say that pirates aren’t fun to watch — at least on screen. And of course, there is perhaps no pirate more famous in pop culture at this point than Jack Sparrow, the bumbling, drunken heart of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
Known for never having a plan but somehow always ending up with one that works out, the unreasonably charming pirate was brought to life by Johnny Depp for five movies across nearly 15 years. In his journeys, he encountered the Kraken, Davy Jones, the Fountain of Youth, and even Poseidon’s trident.
But, if you’re here, you probably know all this. What you want to know is how to watch Sparrow and his pirate friends — including Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swan — in all their swashbuckling glory.

“Barbie” is the latest film to cross the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, a feat accomplished by only 52 other films in history. The oldest film on the list is Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park,” which didn’t crack the $1 billion mark until the film’s 20th anniversary re-release in 2013. The first film to ever crack $1 billion was James Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic,” which still sits at #3 on the list with a whopping $2.2 billion. Cameron, of course, dominates the list with three films in the Top 5 including “Avatar,” still the highest-grossing film ever made.

Remaking Disney's animated classics is a fool's errand, and yet a lucrative enough one that many filmmakers have tried their hand at it and mostly come up empty. So far, the only director to have moderate success at the task is indie darling David Lowery, who's batting two for two after this spring's underrated if flawed "Peter Pan and Wendy" and the 2016 family drama "Pete's Dragon."
It's to Lowery's credit that in each case, he's tackled a pre-existing title that either has a checkered and controversial history ("Peter Pan") or boasts a small enough fanbase that redoing the entire story won't alienate too many people ("Pete's Dragon"). But if you step too far off the beaten path with remaking titles from Disney's Renaissance era of the 1980s and 1990s, you risk angering most viewers. The alternative: films like "The Little Mermaid," the latest Disney remake that purports to change...

Fifty-two minutes longer, with fewer songs (if I've counted right), and four of them by Lin Manuel Miranda. No longer a U but a PG, the BBFC dropping the "very" that the original had on its "mild threat" in what will be referred to as a "live-action" remake. Inverted commas on that because, as with Avatar: The Way Of Water, the presence of human faces in some places makes this no less an act of animation than anything made solely of ink on paper.
Though ink, paper, and accounting seem to inform most of this. You might think it cynical to think this cynical, but the creative in this industry does include the economics. Director Rob Marshall is best known for adaptations, including musicals, and also helmed Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, a sequel based (very loosely) on a book. David Magee worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns.

Disney’s attempts to reinvent their animated classics as live action versions has proven to be largely a smart boxoffice play, but one with a mixed creative result. Certainly some were huge hits like Bill Condon’s Beauty And The Beast and Guy Ritchie’s less enchanting Aladdin. Others effectively created photo-real animals in The Lion King and The Jungle Book. Older Disney staples have gotten the treatment by focusing on the villains in Cruella and Maleficent and their sequels, even an unfortunate Disney + attempt on the untouchable (if you ask me) Lady And The Tramp. But even approaching an animated masterpiece, 1989’s The Little Mermaid and essentially trying to make a splashy (sorry) big screen live action musical that works above and under the water seems dicey on paper. So what do you do? Bring in Rob Marshall, and as it turns out that is all the new live action The Little Mermaid needed.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival could be a defining moment for Johnny Depp’s acting career comeback. Jeanne du Barry will open this year’s festival on the evening of May 16 in a coup for Depp and widely known French multihyphenate Maïwenn. The period royal drama stars Depp as King Louis Xv, while Maïwenn plays the titular character in addition to directing.
The following day, Depp will participate in the festival’s official press conference for Jeanne du Barry, according to sources familiar with his schedule.
The various events — as well as the movie itself — will provide a chance for Hollywood to assess Depp’s current composure. “I haven’t seen the movie, but it feels like was a good way for him [Depp] to get into back into everything,” says a veteran specialty distributor.

With $1.52 million on Thursday and a new 30-day total of $499.5 million, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will pass $500 million domestically sometime Friday, its 31st day in theatrical release. That means the Universal-released blockbuster could be on PVOD ($20 for a 48-hour rental) as soon as Tuesday – but the $100 million Illumination toon has now earned around $1.046 billion worldwide.
It’ll pass “Beauty and the Beast” ($504 million in 2017) and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” ($515 million in 2019) this weekend to become the 17th-biggest unadjusted domestic grosser ever. Its current global total puts it just below “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” ($1.046 billion in 2011).
It ranks second among animated films in North America, behind only “Incredibles 2” ($608 million in 2018), and once it passes the remake of “The Lion King” ($543 million) the whole “Is ‘The Lion King’ animated or live-action?” discourse won’t matter.

Disney’s streak of live-action remakes of animated classics continues with “The Little Mermaid,” and fans are eager to see how this iconic 1989 movie comes to life in this new feature. The animated original is largely responsible for jump-starting a creative resurgence for Disney after a fallow period in the 1980s, as the film’s Broadway-level original songs and emotional story struck a chord with kids and adults alike. The resurgence continued and solidified with “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” and while those three films have already gotten live-action remakes from Disney over the past decade (to whopping box office success), it’s finally “The Little Mermaid”’s turn.
Below we’ve rounded up a guide to everything we know about the “Little Mermaid” live-action remake so far.

Sam Claflin says his audition for “Daisy Jones & The Six” couldn’t have gone worse.
Speaking with Variety about the upcoming series, the actor, who plays lead singer Billy Dunne, says he landed the role despite his “terrible” song performance.
Based on the book of the same name, it follows the rise and fall of a Fleetwood Mac-like band the Six.
As Claflin was preparing for the audition, he learned he would have to a sing a ’70s rock song. The U.K. native admitted he wasn’t a big music fan and chose something from the Apple Music app.
“I went into a recording studio for the first time in my life, confronted with a microphone and people watching me in a fishbowl,” Claflin recalled. “I sang Elton John’s ‘Your Song.’ Terribly.”

Sam Claflin was preparing to audition for the role of Billy Dunne in “Daisy Jones & the Six,” the Prime Video adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel about a fictional 1970s rock band, he was told he’d have to sing a ’70s rock song. The trouble was, Claflin, a U.K.-born actor who admits music has never been his thing, didn’t know any. So he scoured the Apple Music app for a genre playlist and chose the only track he felt comfortable with.

Somehow, “Chicago,” Rob Marshall’s Oscar-winning musical, has just turned 20.
Based on the 1975 musical of the same name (which itself originated in a play from 1926), “Chicago” was a critical and commercial smash, making more than 300 million worldwide and winning six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones. (Even more impressive: the last time a musical had won an Oscar for Best Picture was back in 1968 for “Oliver!”)
Looking back on the movie, it’s perhaps most surprising to remember that it was director Rob Marshall’s first film. Marshall was already a staple in theater, but with “Chicago” he established himself as a truly excellent filmmaker too. He would go on to direct films like “Into the Woods,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and the upcoming live-action version of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”

Filmmaker Rob Marshall has spent a long time thinking about “The Little Mermaid.” Nearly five years, to be exact. When speaking to the Oscar-winning director about the 20th anniversary of “Chicago” (and a new deluxe home video release), he offered an update on his live-action redo of the 1989 Disney animated film, due in theaters this May. “I’m very excited to be finishing up after four-and-a-half years,” Marshall said. “It’s a long time.”
Marshall’s version of “The Little Mermaid” stars Halle Bailey in the title role of Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton, with Daveed Diggs voicing Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay voicing Flounder and Awkwafina voicing Scuttle. The first footage from the film, which features new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda and original composer Alan Menken, was screened at last year’s D23 Expo to a rapturous response.

The budget of Avatar: The Way of Water is bigger than expected.
In recent years, the sequel’s budget ballooned due to the creation of technology required by James Cameron to depict the film’s extended underwater sequences.
In the director’s own words, the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster – which is the most successful film of all time – is “very f***ing” expensive.
Speaking to GQ in an interview, Cameron said the film cost so much that he told the studio that Avatar: The Way of Water represented “the worst business case in movie history”.
Elaborating on this, Cameron claimed that in order for the film to start making back more money than it cost, it would have to become “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history”.
“That’s your threshold,” he said, adding: “That’s your break even.”

It feels like we as a society have sort of memory-holed just how popular the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise was during the 2000s. Those movies were pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars each, and there were five of them! That's so many! My parents owned a copy of "The Game of Life: Pirates of the Caribbean Edition" and none of us had even seen the movie!
I'm not too torn up about the series being forgotten in history, mostly because of star Johnny Depp's status as the internet darling of domestic abuse apologists. But the movies had some merit to them, even if they weren't exactly masterpieces. They were big and fun, with "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" shockingly being the movie with the highest budget, uh, ever? They spent a small nation's Gdp on the fourth movie of a franchise based on an amusement park ride.

We hope you're sitting down for the news we're about to drop on you. According to an exclusive report from The Wrap, the budget for the tenth installment in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, "Fast X," is approaching a whopping 340 million.
While this isn't a drop in the bucket compared to the 6.6 billion in ticket sales the series has generated, it is absolutely massive for a single movie and an unprecedented budget for the increasingly stunt-heavy franchise. If the budget is, in fact, that heavy, then it is approximately a 70 percent increase from the 200 million budget of its predecessor, "F9: The Fast Saga."
The Wrap estimates that the break-even point at the box office for "Fast X" will be around 500 to 550 million, though it could run higher than that depending on the budget for marketing (let's hope the family is covering these costs). Though they're still undoubtedly big earners for Universal Studios,...

When Parade magazine revealed in 1986 that Sylvester Stallone earned 12 million to star in "Rocky IV," every studio executive in Hollywood ordered Tums in bulk. That sum, which equates to 32 million in 2022, doubled the per-picture salary pulled down by the vaunted likes of Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, and Robert Redford. Arnold Schwarzenegger was only making 3 million back then.
In an industry ever mindful of overspending -- while gleefully overspending when, say, someone decides the Universal Monsters brand should be reinvented as an action franchise spearheaded by Tom Cruise -- the last thing studios want is for a volatile, highly sought-after star like Hoffman to learn their competition is raking in twice what they make. This is when budgets start skyrocketing. And, in 1986, an era where there were no sure things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is how an executive loses their job.

Walt Disney Pictures has been pushing forward with heaps of “live-action” remakes of classic films from their extensive film library, and one of the more recent attempts has been a modern spin on the hit 1989 film “The Little Mermaid.” The film wasn’t just popular with kids but made a strong impression on adults as well, as it ended up winning Oscar statues for Score and Best Song. This makes sense why Disney recruited singer Halle Bailey to play the live-action version of the mermaid princess, Ariel, along with hiring veteran director Rob Marshall (“Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides“) to helm the musical after tackling feature adaptations of “Chicago” and “Into The Woods.”
We’ve all been curious about the project and finally landed our first look at the live-action remake thanks to the studio’s panel at D23 Expo and the very first teaser trailer.

Johnny Depp broke into Hollywood by appearing in popular films like "Platoon," and "Nightmare on Elm Street," but he became a star in 1987 when he portrayed Officer Tom Hanson in "21 Jump Street." Uncomfortable with the idea of being a teen magazine pinup, Depp spent the next few decades accepting roles in films that were outside of the mainstream, like, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "The Ninth Gate," and "The Astronaut's Wife." Depp stepped back into the spotlight in 2003 when he accepted the role of Jack Sparrow in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."
In the beginning, Disney executives were skeptical about Depp's staggering, slurring portrayal of Sparrow, but audiences fell in love with the character. Eventually, his audacious and unpredictable behavior became the main focus of the films, but that is not what the original director ever intended. Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy had a combined budget of under 300 million, with "The Fellowship of the Ring" alone budgeted at 93 million or about a quarter of the cost of the most expensive film ever made, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." That Jackson's "Rings" movies are still far better-looking than so many tentpoles made today — 20-year-old CGI and all — is a testament to what the director and his team were able to achieve with their fantasy epic.

2Nd Update, 1:23 Pm: “I tend to be quite expressive in my writing,” a halting Johnny Depp said Tuesday on the stand of his 50 million defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.
After previous testimony during the day detailing his dysfunctional childhood and rise to international stardom, Depp shifted focus in the Virginia courtroom to the vile texts and other communications that have come out of attacks on his Rum Diary co-star. The actor also addressed his reported deep-seated issues with drugs and drinks, laying a lot of the blame on his abusive mother and her “nerve pills.”
“It was self-medication,” the former Pirates of the Caribbean star claimed.
With the seven-member jury and Heard herself sitting close by, Depp explained that he started using his mother’s pills at the age of 11 to “take the edge off.” He also claimed that he never took drugs or drank to “party” but to dull “the pain.

Johnny Depp took the stand on Tuesday afternoon in his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, saying he was focused on “clearing the record” regarding allegations that he engaged in domestic violence.
“Truth is the only thing I’m interested in. Lies will get you nowhere, but lies build upon lies and build upon lies,” Depp said. “I’m obsessed with the truth.”
Under questioning from his own lawyer, Depp denied that he had ever been violent with Heard, or with any other woman.
Heard has accused Depp of striking her, choking her and kicking her on several occasions over the course of their relationship. She has also alleged that Depp once sexually assaulted her during a fight in Australia in 2015. Depp and Heard divorced in 2016.
In December 2018, Heard published an opinion piece in the Washington Post in which she alluded to her prior allegations, though she did not identify Depp by name.

David Brenner, the Oscar-winning film editor who worked on a string of blockbusters as well as nine films for director Oliver Stone, died on Thursday. He was 59. The news was confirmed by Avatar producer Jon Landau, with whom Brenner had been working on the sequels.
Landau called Brenner’s editing skills “extraordinary,” but said what was most impressive about him was “his remarkable compassion for others and the love and commitment he had for his family.”
Over three decades in the film business, Brenner worked with top directors on a remarkable number of big-budget hits, including Independence Day, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League (both versions) and the Avatar sequels.
He first worked with Stone on 1986’s Salvador as an assistant editor. That relationship grew through Platoon and Wall Street until Brenner moved up to co-editor — with Joe Hutshing — on Talk Radio.

David Brenner, an Oscar-winning film editor who worked on dozens of films including “Justice League,” “Independence Day” and “Born on the Fourth of July,” died on Thursday, Variety has confirmed. He was 59.
“He was an extraordinary editor and a loving, compassionate family man,” the American Cinema Editors, of which Brenner was a member, said in a statement. “In an effort to support David’s family during this terrible time, Lightstorm Entertainment has created this GoFundMe account. More important than any financial assistance this may provide, it’s an opportunity to let his wife Amber and his children Annie, Haider, and Sasha know how many other lives David touched.”
In 1990, Brenner won the Academy Award for film editing with director Oliver Stone’s “Born on the Fourth of July,” starring Tom Cruise. He shared the award with editor John Hutshing. Stone recruited Brenner to edit nine of his films, including “Platoon,...

Through much of 2021, streaming service Disney+ has been Marvel’s domain. That’ll happen when you premiere WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If…? within eight months of one another. With the Disney+ list of new releases for September 2021, however, Disney’s other big franchise is striking back.
Star Wars: Visions is set to premiere all seven installments on Wednesday, September 22. This project is a collection of 7 animated short films all from renowned Japanese studios. As you can see by this first teaser, it could be rad. These seven shorts should also make the wait for The Mandalorian season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett even easier.
While Marvel’s What If…? continues on this month, the only other major Disney+ original to premiere in September is Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. As you might be able to guess from the name, this is a reboot of the sitcom Doogie Howser,...
