Broadway’s A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical will play its final performance on Sunday, June 30, before launching a national tour this fall, producers announced today.
The musical, which began previews on November 2, 2022, at the Broadhurst Theatre and opened that year on December 4, will have played 35 preview performances and 657 regular performances when it closes.
The announcement was made today by producers Ken Davenport and Bob Gaudio, who said the production had grossed nearly $63M as of this week.
The musical, which charts the life and career of pop superstar Diamond and includes such hits as “Sweet Caroline,” “Cherry, Cherry” and “Solitary Man,” has seen up-and-down attendance in recent months, with figures for last week indicating that attendance was at just 65% of capacity. The show was one of only several that did not play to attendance of more than 90% capacity during the busy Presidents Day holiday week.

Actor Michael Douglas felt British stars were getting more cinema roles than their American counterparts. According to Douglas, social media and sexuality played a part in stagnating many American performers’ careers.
Michael Douglas once shared what he believed held back young American actors Michael Douglas | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Thanks to his longevity, Douglas has seen how the film industry changed over the years. Recently, Douglas saw a shift where Australian and British actors seemed to be costing American actors film opportunities. The veteran star believed that social media was the source of this issue.
“There’s something going on with young American actors – both men and women – because the Brits and Australians are taking many of the best American roles from them,” Douglas once told The Independent. “Clearly, it breaks down on two fronts. Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.
Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

When looking at Grammy nominations for 2022, you might notice that there are a few cover songs nominated. As per Grammy rules, a cover can only be submitted in a performance category or in an arrangement category; they’re not eligible for songwriting since they were written in a previous eligibility period, or sometimes before the Grammys were even created. This year I think three covers seem to be in a good position to win: Jason Isbell’s “All I Do is Drive,” Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and Chris Cornell’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” But just how common is it for covers to prevail?
Country is one of the fields with the most covers winning. A few of the most recent wins have included “Gentle On My Mind” by The Band Perry (originally performed by John Hartford), “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker...

Quentin Tarantino’s disdain for “Natural Born Killers,” the movie Oliver Stone made from the script he sold to the director, has become well-known in the 27 years since it was released. Though still the story of psychopathic killers Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis), the script was heavily revised by Stone, along with screenwriter David Veloz, and associate producer Richard Rutowski, with Tarantino ending up with a story credit.
In a recent, wide-ranging podcast interview with “Billions” co-creator and showrunner Brian Koppelman (director of 2009’s “Solitary Man”), Tarantino opened up about his negative feelings toward the film, which were first prompted by Koppelman himself. (Via The Playlist.)

Showtime is taking on the story of Uber, putting in development an untitled limited series based on Mike Isaac’s bestselling book Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber, from Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien.
The book, published by W.W. & Company, Inc. on September 3, chronicles the founding of Uber through its 2019 initial public offering.
Pivoting on Travis Kalanick, Uber’s hard-charging CEO who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup, Showtime says the limited series will depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley. Even amid the radical upheaval generated within the global tech capital, Uber stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences.
Koppelman and Levien will executive produce and write the series as part of their overall deal with Showtime, which will produce. Isaac will co-executive produce the project.

A sophomore film we thought might be ready for the 2018 campaign will walk and chop into 2019 instead with a distributor already in place and a hyped up preem in the cards. Riley Stearns‘ The Art of Self Defense landed at Bleecker Street and while no release date has been stamped, we’re thinking this might be a return to Sundance for the filmmaker — he had his 2013 short The Cub preem there prior to launching into feature mode with 2015’s SXSW preemed feature debut Faults. He’s a receiver — Neil Diamond, that is, who’s already been handed trophies like the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (earlier this year), a Kennedy Center Honor (2011), membership in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (also 2011) and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1984). That latter organization decided it’d been long enough since their last salute, so on June 14 in New York they’ll be presenting him with their ultimate honor, the Johnny Mercer Award.
He’s a good match for that prize’s namesake. Between "Ocean's Thirteen," "Rounders," and "Runner Runner," Brian Koppelman and David Levien know more than a few things about powerful men with lots of money, and it looks like they are putting that knowledge to good use in the upcoming Showtime series "Billions." It's the dog days of winter, a time when the temperature barely crests above the single digits and all hope seems to have been frozen, like the pipes running into your bathroom. It’s unlikely that you’ll see Brian Koppelman plugging a screenwriting how-to book anytime soon. The writer/director behind Ocean’s Thirteen and Solitary Man publicly denounced the hoodwinkery birthed by the cat-saving industry and felt strongly enough about the seminar culture to make it the message of his first six-second screenwriting tip. Those tips come in the form of Vines (what else?) that he produces daily. Each comes with a kind of scorched earth sincerity that you don’t often get from working filmmakers, and by next week, he’ll have amassed one hundred of them. That’s a full ten minutes of helpful jabs where his face and nearly two decades of insight fill the frame. Typically with this space we focus on 6 filmmaking tips and offer further challenges and exploration, but for Koppelman’s unique delivery, we’re making a special exception — particularly because there’s so much here (and because digging deeper...

At best an occasional and half-hearted follower of tennis (which is still more than I can say for most other sports), I had never heard of Jimmy Connors before seeing "This is What They Want," the new "30 for 30" doc airing on Espn tonight at 8pm. I mention this not as a reflection on Connors' celebrity -- now 61, Connors is the winner of eight Grand Slam singles titles and a larger than life figure -- but as reassurance that, despite the film being mainly a fond reflection on the pleasures of Connors' courtside talent and prickly personality, it doesn't require a prior investment in who he is to be an enjoyable watch. Connors was a gifted tennis player and pretty much a professional sonuvabitch who seemed to draw power from hatred of his opponents, umpires and linemen. "This is What They Want," which is directed by Brian Koppelman and David Levien ("Ocean's Thirteen,...

In the film adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Filth, Imogen Poots plays it straight alongside James McAvoy's hideously corrupt policeman, the latest in a series of eyecatching supporting roles. So does she yearn to be the lead one day?
• Filth is on release in the UK now
• Watch James McAvoy talking about his role in Filth
Imogen Poots arranges to meet in a tea shop. The music is gentle and the air smells of pine. The decor sparkles white and the drinks sound like fairytales – Enchanted Forest, Gentle Giant, Russian Caravan. A scene from her new film, Filth, pops into my head. Detective sergeant Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy) is having rough sex with a colleague's wife; she tightens a belt around his neck as he screams at her to "cut off the gas". The cafe feels wrong. It would be tough work talking self-annihilation over a cup of Caramel Sweetheart.

Brian Koppelman knows his craft. The writer, director, and producer has a long list of credits to prove it ("The Girlfriend Experience," "Solitary Man," "Ocean's 13," etc.). He's also set to be a showrunner for a new HBO show about the 1970s music scene (if the show gets picked up as a series). Recently, Koppelman has taken to sharing his screenwriting wisdom in six second tips on Vine. In these six second clips, he covers everything from combating writer's block, to story structure. His #1 tip? "All screenwriting books are bullshit, all. Watch movies, read screenplays. Let them be your guide." Maybe he should add "watch Vine videos" to his list! Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese and "Boardwalk Empire" creator Terence Winter have been slowly working on a project at HBO that sounds almost too good to be true -- a drama set in the New York music scene the late '70s. And now, Deadline reports, the potential drama series has showrunners in place -- Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the writers of "Ocean's Thirteen" and "The Girlfriend Experience" and the directors of "Solitary Man" and the upcoming Espn "30 for 30" doc "This is What They Want." Read More: Kevin Connolly, Brian Koppelman, David Levien Talk Their '30 for 30' Docs While Keith Olbermann Touts His Return to Espn While the still untitled series has not yet been greenlight, the hiring of Koppelman and Levien certainly seems a good sign in that direction. Winter wrote the pilot script and Scorsese is slated to direct the pilot, like he did for "Boardwalk Empire.

One of Hollywood's most endearing love affairs appears to be unraveling. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are on the verge of calling it quits after 13 years of marriage as they have been living separate lives, E! News has learned. "Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage," a rep for the actress said in a statement. The Solitary Man and his Chicago missus have yet to file for divorce or formal documentation with the court announcing a legal separation. Of course, Douglas and Zeta-Jones tied the knot in 2000 in a fairy tale wedding at Manhattan's Plaza Hotel that had all of Tinseltown—and the...

1.) Marvel has narrowed their search down to three young actresses as finalists for the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air, 50/50), Imogen Poots (Fright Night, Solitary Man) and Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) have emerged as the frontrunners for the undisclosed role. Some sources are speculating they're casting for Sharon Carter, who is both a Shield agent and the niece of Peggy Carter, Steve Rodgers' love interest from the first Captain America movie. So who do you like as a match for Chris Evans? Regardless of who gets the role, he'll continue to look absolutely massive next to his leading lady. All three of these actresses are very much on the small side. [New York Post] 2.) Universal is courting Jim Carrey for a small, but showy, role in Kick Ass 2: Balls to the Wall. Solitude: It can come from choice, or by default. An unusual number of movies made across South and Central America over the past year have as a central theme the existential state of loneliness, be it operative or merely a hovering threat. In an umbrella culture that honors celebration, music, and gossip, being shunned, marginalized, or discarded is a declaration of non-being, a metaphoric death sentence. Does the stereotype of Latin Americans as gregarious, affable extroverts hold water?
The annual Latinbeat exhibition at the Film Society of Lincoln Center (August 10-23), curated by Marcela Goglio and Richard Pena, measures the pulse of southern cinema for the gringos up north. Within the diversity of forms and topics in this year’s selection, the theme of isolation pops up insistently, defying our entrenched expectations. For the characters this may be tough going, but for spectators, it is a godsend. The depiction of...

The much-loved Dr. Seuss children’s book The Lorax got a big expansion for its feature-length movie debut. The story has been translated for the screen before, back in 1972 as an animated TV special, but that was only 25 minutes long. Don’t be fooled by the title. With Jeff, Who Lives at Home -- yes, with a comma *sigh* -- Duplass brothers Jay and Mark of mumblecore fame have made their least mumblecore-esque and most just-plain-basic-indie-quirky film yet. Those with a very low tolerance for indie quirk may find their patience tried, but I, who have been mixed on the Duplasses and really hated their last film, the similarly themed Cyrus, kinda couldn’t help being charmed by this one. Even though it stars Jason Segal, of whom I have not been a fan, and even though its raison d’être is one that has, in the past, really gotten my blood boiling. For this is the tale of justifying the layabout, directionless existence of thirtysomething good-for-nothing Jeff (Segal: Bad Teacher, Gulliver's Travels), who lives at home, and cannot be bothered to do a single damn even minimally useful thing...

The biggest roadblock to getting a biopic about a musician made is clearing the rights to the (usually expensive) songs and pleasing the estate. If the artist in question is still alive, the process can be made slightly easier, but if not, projects can drag in develop as everyone involved tries to find common ground to meet on financially and creatively. Which leads us to "All Is By My Side," the long, long brewing Jimi Hendrix pic with Andre 3000 in the lead that, out of nowhere, was announced earlier this week as gearing up to start shooting in a matter of weeks. We wondered if this might mean Experience Hendrix were on board with the movie too -- turns out, they're not.

Honestly, I'm very intrigued already, with this cast and that story, I'm looking forward to this. Read on! While it doesn't sound like this has anything to do with Rounders 2, the storyline as described by Deadline states it "revolves around the world of offshore online gaming and an increasingly tense relationship between a business founder and his protege." Who would you like to play the role of a dirty grandpa--Jeff Bridges or Michael Douglas? Vulture reports that Bridges has been offered the lead in Universal Pictures' comedy Dirty Grandpa, which is being penned by John Phillips. If Bridges passes on the role, the studio plans to offer the part to Douglas. The film follows a "soon-to-be-married uptight grandson who is tricked into escorting his lascivious and recently widowed former Army general of a grandfather to spring break in Florida." This should be a pretty raunchy movie, since Phillips is also writing the Bad Santa sequel.
I could believe both actors in this role. Bridges' roles in Crazy Heart and The Door In The Floor make him a good candidate for this role. His comedic timing in The Big Lebowski should also be taken into consideration. As far as Douglas goes, Solitary Man and Wonder Boys are two good roles to consider.
